The Federal Government has relieved the Managing Director of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Mr. Olubunmi Peters, of his job with immediate effect.
Government also said it had approved the removal of the executive directors of the agency in a major shake-up said to be in line with the desire to reposition the organisation in view of its critical role in the administration's infrastructural development programme.
A statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Minister of Works, Housing and Urban Development, Mr. Lawrence Ojabor said President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua had approved the appointment of Mr. Kabir Abdullahi as the new Managing Director of FERMA.
The statement gave names and portfolios of the six new directors include, Mr. O. C. C. Ezedozie (Executive Director, Roads Maintenance and Management Services), Mr. B. Aganaba (Executive Director, Operations), Mr. Zakari Ayitogo, (Executive Director, Operations West), Mr. J. O. Popoola, (Executive Director, Engineering Services), Mr. Hafiz Ibrahim Ahmed (Executive Director, Finance and Accounts) and Mr. Wakil Adamu (Executive Director, Admin and Human Resources).
Abdullahi, an indigene of the President's home state, Katsina, takes over from the former MD, Peters, whose tenure was to end in March 2010.
Before his appointment, Abdullahi was the Executive Director, West Operation in the Agency.
According to the Federal Government, all appointments are with immediate effect, and for a four-year period in the first instance.
The statement said the changes at FERMA were part of efforts to strengthen and reposition the agency to facilitate the implementation of its infrstructural development programme.
"The appointments are aimed at repositioning and strengthening the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency in the discharge of its statutory functions to meet the expectations of government in its infrastructural development programme as encapsulated in Mr. President’s seven-point agenda", it said.
THISDAY gathered that three of the newly appointed directors, Ahmed, Adamu, Ayitogo were apparently picked from outside the agency.

Product Description:

Learning a complex new language is no easy task especially when it s an object-oriented computer programming language like Java. You might think the problem is your brain. It seems to have a mind of its own, a mind that doesn't always want to take in the dry, technical stuff you're forced to study.

The fact is your brain craves novelty. It's constantly searching, scanning, waiting for something unusual to happen. After all, that's the way it was built to help you stay alive. It takes all the routine, ordinary, dull stuff and filters it to the background so it won't interfere with your brain's real work--recording things that matter. How does your brain know what matters? It's like the creators of the Head First approach say, suppose you're out for a hike and a tiger jumps in front of you, what happens in your brain? Neurons fire. Emotions crank up. Chemicals surge.

More than virtually any other book, Thinking in Java helps you understand not just what to do -- but why. Eckel introduces all the basics of objects as Java uses them; then walks carefully through the fundamental concepts underlying all Java programming -- including program flow, initialization and cleanup, hiding implementations, reusing classes and polymorphism. Using extensive, to-the-point examples, he introduces error handling, exceptions, Java I/O, run-time type identification, and passing and returning objects. He covers the Java AWT, multithreading, network programming with Java -- even design patterns. The best way to understand the real value of this book is to hear what readers of the online version have been saying about it: "much better than any other Java book I've seen, by an order of magnitude, " "mature, consistent, intellectually honest, well-written and precise, " "a thoughtful, penetrating analytical tutorial which doesn't kowtow to the manufacturers, " "Thank you again for your awesome book. I was really floundering, but your book has brought me up to speed as quickly as I could read it!"For both beginner and experienced C and C++ programmers who want to learn Java.

PoliticsNigeria’s Population Now 157m - Srfh by blacksta(op): 6:41am On Jul 28, 2009
SOCIETY for Reproductive and Family Health (SRFH), on Monday, disclosed that Nigeria’s population now stood at 157million and charged the Planned Parenthood Federation of Nigeria (PPFN), to intensify enlightenment education on family planning.

Director- General of the SRFH, Professor Oladapo Alabi Ladipo, made the disclosure at the commissioning of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Resource Centre, at the complex of the National Assembly.

The centre was established by the House Committee on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) headed by Honourable Saadatu Sani, with assistance from PPFN.

Ladipo, while giving his goodwill message, said Nigeria now has a population figure of 157 million from the 140 million it had in 2006.

According to him, Nigeria has an annual growth rate of five million births with six million pregnancies yearly, even as he warned of the challenges posed by such high growth rate.

Professor Ladipo argued that issues such high maternal mortality, unwanted pregnancies, unemployment, pressure on available resources in hospitals, educational institutions as well environmental degradation, remained part of the challenges of uncontrolled growth in population.

He, therefore, tasked the PPFN to increase its awareness campaign on how and why Nigerians should embrace birth control, just as he noted that birth control was equally in practice in the past through traditional methods by the then forefathers.

Speaking at the commissioning, Speaker ‘Dimeji Bankole, who declared the centre open, noted that the MDGs programmes were targeted at alleviating the plight of the poor in the country.
