You are a slowpoke. There is no point building a new airport merely because the owner of the current one does not allow you to improve on it. At least people are now tacitly admitting that it is Lagos state government that wants to build a new one, not private investors. Good luck in finding the money. If the project was commercially viable, you can easily find international funding for it. How else are they funding the other major projects in Lagos?
I had presumed we were having an intellectual argument, albeit, highly lacking on your end. You have confirmed all that I was fearing by your quick resort to name calling. My dear 4play, mere vulgar abuse should not be used in place of sound arguments, where the latter is severely lacking. If all that is left in you is insults and abuses, then I believe I have definitely wasted my time in attempting to engage you in a scholarly confrontation. When the airport does spring up, please refuse to fly into it and continue to beg the FG to build a second runaway,

If MM has only one runway, you then build another airport? Lagos is not afraid of demolishing houses, why not demolish the properties near the current airport and expand the runway? Another delusional Nigerian.

I'm not against most of the projects in Lekki, I'm against the airport in particular and it's no surprise you can't find private investors who are willing to take the commercial risk for a new airport when there is a barely used one already.
ziga:
I think you are the one who is delusional.

Last time i checked MMIA is FG property, and they prevented the LASG from even upgrading the Airport road when they tried to. I hope you read about that in the news!!!

Well at the current capacity, MMIA is grossly over-utilized!!!

Please check your facts!!!
I guess I do not need to respond to your comment 4play. as Ziga has pointed out the ineptitude of you argument and recommendation. Lagos should build another runway in MM, please tell me when Lagos and Federal Govt become one and the same. As to you comments on local private investors, it does not hold water. the need is obvious and apparent but Nigerian banks are not financially capable of handling such capital intensive projects, most of what they do is open lines of credit with foreign banks and fund local projects, so excuse you, if you really don't have any cogent response on this issue. Don't talk for the sake of talking.

personally,
I think it is wrong for fashola to build Airport in Lagos. We have domestic airport and international airport both of which are under utilised. He should invest the money on light rail and stop aiming at too many ambitious projects at once.
Under utilized?!!! MM int'l was over utilized and still is, before MM2 was built. Local Airport is even over utilized. MM2 is the only airport that can come close to some level of int'l standard. And it is not under utilized. Before I 'attack' your comments, i will point out that you have aired an opinion without giving a factual basis for your comments. Lagos is the most viable and profitable int'l route in West Africa!!! and it suffers from having only one int'l runway, how then can it be under utilized. I remember a few years ago both British Airways and Virgin Atlantic were almost begging the Federal Govt for an increased number of slots into Lagos, Before you make comments on this issue scroll through some of the posts which aptly counter your comments. I suggest you read my first comment on page 7!!! sheez!

Why do olodo people always co sign other olodo people?

Lagos mainland remains the industrial heart of the whole of West Africa. All our major industrial estates from Ikeja, to Ilupeju, Apapa,  Mushin,  Ogba
Matori, Ikorodu, Ilasamaja-Isolo Industrial Estate, Aswani Industrial  Estate are all Lagos Mainland based.

The mainland by far has more residential estates and commerce heavens  than Lagos island,

You clueless people need to shut up sometimes, it's not by force to display your ignorance. Try spend some more time worrying about your villages and worry less about Lagos.
wink grin

couldn't help but laugh at the above remark. I had hoped my first post would bridge the gap between the dissenters and the approvers, seems like those who dissent always have an convenient way of bringing up additional issues which are quite irrelevant to the post. For instance the issue of PPP was not mentioned in the first 7 pages of this topic and suddenly it appeared. so PPP, what really is it? A partnership between the public (govt and its parastatals) and the private sector (strictly for profit organisations) to fund projects that the govt is not financially capable of embarking on without disrupting the structure of the economy. this is my lay man definition.

Frankly, the Nigerian Private sector CANNOT handle the financial burden of an airport. It would take all our 24 (or 23) banks to form a syndicate in order to come close. 73billion, how many banks can handle that on their books as debt. I can categorically state that the Nigerian Private sector are not on top of this food chain with regards to provodong funds! Do you think the majority of funds for the Lekki road came from within Nigeria? Guess again, The African Development Bank and other DFIs (Development Finance Institution), or Glo's Main One cable, that is being funded by the African Financing Partnership, which is a group of DFIs and MFIs that are committed to funding infrastructure and development projects across Africa. The main focus of these organisations is not profit but economic development and bridging the infrastructure gap of Africa.

So those who think this is another opportunity for the govt to steal money, I laugh with undeniable scorn at your unintentional but expected display of ignorance. I can bet with you that the companies that have been presumably selected to run preliminary assessments on the entire project are SPV (special purpose vehicles) set up solely for the Project in question. the shareholders of these SPVs would obviously be technical experts within requisite field. How are the going to get funds for the projects? Need I say it for the nay sayers amongst you! International financial institutions like DFIs and MFIs, the only way the Nigerian Banking sector would smell this project is if they come under a 2nd tranche of the loan debt. They can in no way handle the responsibilities of a lead arranger or even co arranger, they are small boys in the scheme of things.

AND obviously the govt would be expected to drop some money in order to have something at risk. Private sector (international and not local champions like GTB or First Bank) investors would not fund a project where the risk is not adequately distributed.

Commenting on this thread is mentally draining simply because the majority of you guys (and you know yourselves) cannot contribute sound, concrete and intellectual arguments. The basis of many arguments lack coherent structure and understanding. But hey, we are entitled to our opinions no matter what it may be.

Many don't understand what a 2nd airport will do to Lagos. MM is Federal and so no revenue accrues to Lagos; a Lagos owned airport will increase revenue to Lagos for the years to come, it is capital intensive but in 20years time, Lagos will still continue to reap the benefits, In terms of population, Lagos is at least 2ce the size of London and definitely larger in terms of land mass, yet London has 4 airports: Heathrow, Gatwick, Stanstead and London City Airport, all providing different levels of international and regional flights.

Many say MM1 is enough, Far from it, With Lagos being the busiest route in West Africa and probably second to Johannesburg in Africa, one tiny Airport that manages to operate one runaway is not enough. The Lagos Govt has realised the loss of revenue the Nigeria suffers with only on e airport in Lagos. All the major airlines in the world want to fly into Lagos and those already flying want to increase their slots but they can't simply because MM1 does not have the capacity to deal with such an influx. Don't criticize simply because you don't understand.

Lekki axis also needs to be developed, the mainland is congested as it is. Lekki/Epe expressway has virgin land that would remain undeveloped unless incentives are in place to ensure return on capital fro any investments made.An airport and a freetrade zone definitely signals the right intentions.

And hello, a lekki/mainland bridge would obviously decongest traffic on bbloody third mainland bridge and that axis,

Fashola is not the Federal Govt so you can not expect him to tackle things that should necessarily fall within the purview of the Fed, many of you talk about healthcare, and unemployment, Capital projects create employment, do you think jobs just appear out of thin air. You spend money to make money. And setting in place capital projects is creating sustainable development. Healthcare, is not free and many of the people who need healthcare basically cannot afford it. Through creation of better jobs, they can better afford healthcare, and revenue that accrues to Lagos State can be channeled into upgrading the healthcare system in Lagos,

The opinion of those who dissent with this project point towards a quick fix or short term solution to the problems we face. That manner of doing things has been a bane to our development process. Our problems require solutions that adopt a long term and well structured strategy. Solutions and answers that outlive the tenure of any administrator or executive office holder. I want to be able to say 10years from now Fashola took a decision which would be positively impacting my yet to be born children. The bible advices us to leave an inheritance to our children's children. Simply put, your legacy should be felt in the generations to com when you are long gone.

To those who understand the greater ramifications of building an international Lagos and are not afraid to take those bold steps, i am sure you all will understand my angle of approach. A new Lagos airport is not just an airport to me, it signals the construction of a gateway to economic progression and sustained development.

emmymama,
Wot point exactly are you trying to make. Miss Okere should respect the Navy, the Navy should respect civilians likewise. The ratings showed utter lack of respect for the person of a woman. And yet Miss Okere should respect the Navy for humiliating her. There is something called vicarious liability in law, which simply means that an employer is liable for the actions of the employee committed in the course of employment. That is why the Navy is ultimately liable for the 100m. It is obvious you miss the whole point and the mere fact that you suggest civilians be shot by military officials in a fracas raises the suspicion that you are probably one of the rotten eggs in the Nigerian military who are not worthy of being a uniformed personel.

shooting to death, i laugh at your extreme ignorance. and who says the family of the 'dead' victim do not have a right to sue. It is sad that you have decided to publicize your limited thought process. You should not be quick to make comments where you can not comprehend the full gravity of the situation. I give you the benefit of the doubt. Ponder on your comment and redeem yourself by constructing commentary that have a foundation.

Preference because it is the navy. the more i read your comment the sicker I get in my stomach. You should bury your head in shame.
very sad indeed.

no nigerians are not meant to be beaten or harrased

but they are meant to respect the navy

she was being stubborn

short of gettin into a fist fight with officers

the real problem is lack of training

cos down here, minute amt of stubborness regardless of whose fault it is

will result in the person being pinned down like a goat

and painfully cuffed, even mased

and in the states definitely tasered!!

it was a suit, so im guessing the military is payin it

i.e ALL OF YOU MOFO'S!!!!

********************************************

So true!!!! And the reason why she
was being stubborn was becuase of CONNECTION!!!
ie Parent, Relative etc!!!
If you watch the video online you can see
that she was asking for trouble in a way!!!!
THE ONLY REASON WHY SHE GOT THE PAY OUT
WAS BECAUSE OF WHO HERE PARENTS WERE PERIOD!!! angry
For all of you insinuating that she won the case because her father is influential and she had connections, y'all are definitely on cheap weed. Her father may happen to be a retired Colonel, but I have never heard of him. Fine he presently works in the National Assembly but even till this day, I have not read anything in the news that pertains to him. Frankly he is an average Nigerian man whose daughter was humiliated in public, And what is all this talk about connections, Connections to who or what. By raising such unjustifiable and baseless assumptions you cast aspersions on the entire judicial process. Your insinuations would tend to question the integrity of the Judge because by stating that Uzoma won because of connections you indirectly assume that the Judge was influenced by these 'connections' (which in my opinion are figments of your poorly developed imaginations and thought processes).

It is sad when people can not see beyond their noses. I strongly believe that the many of you saying the judgment would have gone the other way had Uzoma been a poor girl are definitely in some heightened state of mental poverty. Uzoma, in no way looked wealthy or rich. She does not strike me as someone who has been living the good life, and her car, well, definitely would not have crossed the 600k mark in cost. So please tell me where you all saw riches written all over her.

Documentary evidence won the case for Uzoma, the Respondents had the audacity to claim that she snatched the horsewhip and flogged one of the ratings, before proceeding to struggle with another for his rifle, hahahaha, Now tell me whether or not they don't sound like ill-bred liars. Like the Judge said in her judgment, even a Nollywood would not write a script like that.
