PoliticsWatch Out! Tinubu Will Be Nigeria's Best President Ever, Says Matawalle by BleedingPen(op): 7:44am On Jun 17, 2023
Immediate past Zamfara state governor, Bello Matawalle says he believes President Bola Tinubu will be the best President that Nigeria has ever had.

Matawalle made the declaration on Friday after a courtesy visit to the President at the Aso Rock presidential villa, Abuja.

He said Tinubu had started convincing the world that he has what it takes to lead the country right.

His words, “So far, so good, you’ve seen how the President has started, this not a new thing to him, he’s a good administrator, with good policies. He’s going to fulfil all his campaign promises.

“By seeing the start off of his administration, many have started believing that he’s going to Nigeria will become the best country in the region. We believe that Asiwaju will be the best President that Nigeria has ever had.”

As a sitting governor, Aminu Masari of Katsina, a state so besieged by terrorists that he asked residents to take up arms and defend themselves, had last year described then President Muhammadu Buhari as Nigeria’s best President ever.

The then governor of Buhari’s home state had repeatedly lamented the security situation in the former president’s state, saying security agencies are overwhelmed and residents should take up arms to defend themselves.

A Nigerian lady, Treasure Eleojo Abraham, has taken to social media to share the approval message she received from Guinness World Records (GWR) as she gets set to begin her journey to break a world record.

According to the Idoma, Benue-born lady, who doubles as a relationship coach and real estate consultant, she would be breaking the record for ‘the most self-portrait photographs (selfies) taken in three minutes.’

Findings by METROWATCH reveals that the record is currently held by Akshay Kumar, an Indian actor, who on February 22, 2023 set the record by taking 184 selfies within the three minutes set target.

The attempt took place a day before the release of Indian actor Akshay Kumar’s movie titled ‘Selfiee’.

Announcing her attempt in a post on Facebook, the excited Nigeria’s Treasure noted that she has been passionate about pushing boundaries, challenging limits, and achieving the extraordinary.

She, therefore, called for support from friends, family members, and anyone who loves witnessing incredible achievements, as, according to her, she can’t do it without their support and encouragement.

“I’ve always been passionate about pushing boundaries, challenging limits, and achieving the extraordinary. And now, I want to make my mark in history by shattering some existing records and setting new ones!

“From heart-pounding physical feats to mind-boggling mental challenges, I’ll be diving headfirst into the world of record-breaking. Imagine witnessing jaw-dropping stunts, witnessing incredible perseverance, and being part of something truly unforgettable,” she noted.

The Nigerian lady, who will also be attempting to break the record for the ‘longest home kitchen cooking marathon (individual), revealed that she would use the opportunity to showcase African dishes in the 68 hours cook-a-thon.

“This dream will soon be a reality, together we can do it, Hilda broke one now let’s break another: the home cooking marathon. I am preparing and looking forward to it.

“I will be making traditional foods, ijangada, (dry okra) let’s showcase our food that has almost gone into extinction, the world need to appreciate our rich delicacies,” Treasure noted.

According to her, she is embarking on the journey to gain visibility and improve the lives of the less privileged in the society, in her own little way.

“I’ll be documenting my progress, sharing behind-the-scenes glimpses, and inviting you to be a part of this incredible adventure. Your support will mean the world to me and will give me the strength to go that extra mile, push through the challenges, and emerge victorious!

“So, whether you’re a friend, family member, or someone who simply loves witnessing incredible achievements, please join me in this record-breaking quest. Together, we can make history and inspire others to dream big and reach for the stars!,” the Nigerian chef concluded.

METROWATCH reports that the current ‘longest home kitchen cooking marathon (individual)’ is 68 hr 30 min 01 sec, and was achieved by Rickey Lumpkin II (USA) in Los Angeles, California, USA, on 7th April, 2018.

Rickey made his record breaking attempt to raise money to sponsor children through World Vision. He is passionate about raising money for children living in Africa and has so far raised over $45,000 through running marathons and holding fundraisers.

•‘Leave me alone to enjoy my well-deserved rest’

Immediate past Governor of Delta State, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, on Thursday, reiterated that he didn’t betray Southern presidency by accepting to be Alhaji Atiku Abubakar’s running mate.

He said his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) agreed to throw its ticket open because it was in the opposition to enable the party present a formidable candidate that could match the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate.

Okowa, who spoke through his Media Adviser, Mr. Olisa Ifeajika at a news conference in Asaba, said once a Northerner emerged as the party’s candidate at a very transparent presidential primary election, he was duty bound by law to pick his running mate from the South.

The former Governor who was responding to allegations raised by elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark during an interview on ARISE Television on Wednesday, said as a member of a political party, he was duty bound to adhere to the party’s decisions.

“First let me put it on record that Senator Okowa has immense respect for Chief Edwin Clark, our revered father, elder statesman, respected Deltan and a very loud voice in the country.

“So, whatever he says is important but we are worried that the issues that have been addressed over and over are still being revisited by our father, Chief Clark.

“Because it is coming from him, otherwise we would have said let it slide but we have to respond to him because of who he is,” he added.

Politics[FACT CHECK] Bawa: Chukkol Is EFCC Acting Chairman Not Mohammed Umar Abba by BleedingPen(op):
Following the suspension of Abdulrasheed Bawa from office as chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the anti-graft agency’s Director of Operations, has been asked to step in, in Acting capacity.

An online newspaper, The PUNCH, had subsequently reported that Mohammed Umar Abba was now the Acting Chairman of the EFCC. The newspaper had noted that Umar was until Bawa’s suspension the EFCC’s Director of Operations.

However, checks by METROWATCH on Wednesday night showed that CE Abdulkarim Chukkol, who is the current Director, Operations of the EFCC, is now the anti-graft agency’s Acting Chairman, and not Abba.

Abba served out as Director, Operations from 2017 – 2020 when he became Acting Chairman following the suspension from office of the then Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Further checks on the official website of the EFCC equally showed that Chukkol was quoted in several media report of the anti-graft agency as its current Director of Operations.

He will now step in as Acting Chairman of the EFCC, acting on the presidential directive.

Meanwhile, apparently realising its publication error, The PUNCH has now deleted its earlier report on Abba assuming office as Acting Chairman of the EFCC.

Checks on the newspaper’s website Wednesday night for the previous story titled: ‘6 things to know about Acting EFCC Chairman, Mohammed Abba‘, returned an ‘ERROR 404‘.

Backstory:

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday approved the indefinite suspension from office of Bawa as the Chairman of the EFCC, “to allow for proper investigation into his conduct while in office.”

A statement by Willie Bassey, a Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), said Bawa’s suspension followed weighty allegations of abuse of office levelled against him.

Bawa was directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Director, Operations in the anti-graft agency, who will oversee the affairs of the Office of the Chairman of the EFCC pending the conclusion of the investigation.

Abdulrasheed Bawa, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has hinted that the Commission is currently investigating Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Bawa disclosed that the investigation would take time because it takes time.

Speaking with THISDAY, the EFCC czar revealed that they have a request for Tinubu’s assets declaration form.

According to Bawa: “You asked me a question earlier about arresting people before an investigation and now you are saying why didn’t we arrest Tinubu? Why didn’t you just say ‘arrest him’?

“Investigation is ongoing. When you are investigating matters like this, they don’t end in a day. Thousands of investigations are going on, on a daily basis.

“You understand? You know you are from the media. After you will say we are doing a media trial.”

Fast forward to 2023. President Tinubu on Wednesday approved the indefinite suspension from office of Bawa as the Chairman of the EFCC, to allow for proper investigation into his conduct while in office.

PoliticsEdo 2024: Obaseki’s Ex-Aide, Emwanta Rejects Commissioner Appointment, Dumps PDP by BleedingPen(op): 10:19pm On Jun 14, 2023
Mr Adaze Emwanta, a former Commissioner of Communication and Orientation under Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Emwanta announced his resignation in a letter dated June 14, 2023 and addressed to the Chairman of the PDP in his Egor Local Government Area (LGA) of Edo.

He also announced the withdrawal of his earlier application letter to serve as the Commissioner representing Egor in the State Exco earlier submitted to the Governor.

The ex-Commissioner said he is quitting the PDP due to the “perennial crisis” rocking the party in his Egor LGA as well as what he described as visible under-development of the once great local council area.

According to him, the crisis rocking the PDP in Egor local council “is being orchestrated by external forces, particularly those in Osadebe Avenue (Edo Government House).”

Adaze noted that during the party’s last caucus meeting in the LGA, he volunteered to sacrifice his Commissioner return slot for peace to reign in the Egor local council area.

“Sadly, things have become worse with the imposition of a local Godfather on us and this is not acceptable to me,” Emwanta, who is also a legal practitioner, noted.

Emwanta first served as Commissioner of Communication and Orientation but was later moved to the Ministry of Youth and Gender Affairs when Governor Obaseki reshuffled the Exco.

His resignation from the PDP is coming barely days after another chieftain of the party, Ken Imasuagbon, better known as Rice Man, dumped the PDP for the Labour Party ahead of the Edo 2024 governorship race.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, on Wednesday, declared the seat for the Surulere 1 Federal Constituency of Lagos State vacant.

This is following the resignation of the former occupant of the seat and erstwhile Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, from the Lower Legislative Chamber.

Gbajabiamila’s resignation letter, which was addressed to the Speaker of the Parliament, was read on Wednesday on the floor of the Green Chamber.

He said he is stepping down as to be able to focus on the task of serving as the Chief of Staff to the President.

Recall that the lawmaker who was only yesterday inaugurated alongside his colleagues and had voted as well for the leadership of the House, was recently appointed as Chief of Staff by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

With this latest development, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is expected to conduct a fresh election for the Surulere 1 Federal Constituency in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Gbajabiamila is expected to be sworn in as Chief of Staff by President Bola Tinubu any moment from now.

Gbajabiamila had in May confirmed his appointment as President Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, while disclosing that he would assume the new role on June 14.

Edo 2024: Obaseki’s Deputy, Shaibu Spotted with Oshiomhole at APC NASS Members Post-Inauguration Dinner

The Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu was on Tuesday sighted at the post-inauguration dinner for National Assembly members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Particularly, Shaibu was seen with Adams Oshiomhole, his estranged benefactor and former Edo governor, who is now a Senator in the 10th National Assembly.

Both Shaibu and his boss, Governor Godwin Obaseki are members of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Ahead of the Edo 2020 governorship election, Obaseki and Shaibu defected to the PDP from the APC to clinch the party's ticket and win re-election. Oshiomhole was the APC National Chairman at that time. They accused the former governor of scheming to deny them the APC ticket.

Since then, Shaibu was rarely seen with his former political godfather, Oshiomhole, in the public. Though, the former had always regarded the latter as his ‘political mentor’.

'WHY I FOUGHT AGAINST OSHIOMHOLE' — SHAIBU

On why he supported Obaseki against Oshiomhole during the Edo 2020 governorship election battle, Shaibu had said that Oshiomhole wanted to make himself a godfather over Edo.

He accused Oshiomhole of asking him to join the movement to unseat Obaseki and also seeking to rule Edo by proxy through the then APC gubernatorial candidate, Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

Shaibu said he begged Oshiomhole to let go of any grievance he had against Obaseki because the governor was doing well for the Edo people, a plea which Shaibu said fell on deaf ears.

The Edo deputy governor went on to reveal that on realising that Oshiomhole had declared a war against the governor, he told the former governor that he will stand with Obaseki come what may.

According to Shaibu, the ploy was to remove Obaseki at the onset and replace him with his deputy (Shaibu), but he said he refused, stating that it was not his “will nor nature” to betray.

Shaibu recounted how he fought on Oshiomhole’s side, stressing that he hates and has been fighting against oppression, and will not stand for the form of oppression which Oshiomhole is championing.

The deputy governor said he will fight to the very last to ensure that Obaseki is defended, the same way he defended Oshiomhole when there were plots against him in Edo State.

At a thanksgiving service held in honour of former local government chairmen in the state, Shaibu said Oshiomhole fell by the roadside because he stood in the way of the fight against poverty in Edo.

He said when Oshiomhole was governor, they started the revolution of not placing Edo in the hands of individuals that will mortgage their collective heritage while flying jets all over.

“We said there must be a change and that godfathers must be brought to their kneels and people must decide who lead them while leaders must be accountable to the people and not few godfathers,” Shaibu said.

“But, along the line people that didn’t believe in it fell by the roadside, just the way Oshiomhole fell by the roadside because he didn’t actually believe that we should make poverty history in Edo.

“Even the commissioners, SSA and some local government chairmen that resigned from our cabinet didn’t believe in the course because if they did, the fight was needles.”

According to Shaibu, the Edo 2020 fight was between those who believe in making poverty a history in Edo and those who didn’t believe in it.

He said, “For me people said I am loyal to Obaseki, but I am loyal to a course I believe in. I was brutalised, injured and had my kneel and everything replaced under Oshiomhole’s administration, all this was that some godfathers wanted to derail our making poverty history in Edo, so we fought on the side of the people and the beneficiary of that struggle was Oshiomhole.

“The second fight now, he (Oshiomhole) became the new godfather trying to derail our mission of making poverty history but I fought on the side of Governor Obaseki in making poverty history in Edo.”

Shaibu at the event said he almost lost his life and his family while trying to save Oshiomhole from impeachment when the latter was the governor of Edo State.

“I was brutalised for Comrade Oshiomhole. I laid down my life for him; threw my family through the fence for safety when I was attacked for his sake,” said Shaibu who was the majority leader in Edo State House of Assembly when Oshiomhole was governor.

“My hands were stitched after I was attacked on the floor of the State House of Assembly to save Comrade Adams Oshiomhole from being impeached in his first and second terms in office.

“It is now time for Edo people to choose if we want progress, but our progress must not be put in reverse. Some persons want to stop Edo State from progressing but this is the time to defend Governor Obaseki and Edo people.”

Shaibu wondered why Oshiomhole was against Governor Obaseki’s bid for a second term.

“I remember Oshiomhole told me he believes in second term, saying four years is not enough for someone to make a difference. Edo people listened to him and the party gave him an overwhelming consensus, which made him emerge as the party’s candidate leading to his victory in the election.

“We promised to take good governance to the next level. Obaseki is positively transforming the state through his people-oriented policies that have birthed programmes like Edo State Basic Education Transformation (EdoBEST), Edo State Healthcare Improvement Programme (Edo-HIP), and the Edo Oil Palm programme in the agricultural sector.

“He has made giant strides, which now positions our state as an investment destination. The governor is doing well and needs our support physically and our prayers spiritually,” the deputy governor had said.

Meanwhile, Shaibu is believed to be interested in succeeding his boss, Obaseki in the upcoming governorship election in Edo taking place next year.

He is, however, yet to formally declare his interest or announce the party he would run on.

PoliticsI Am Not A Thief, Orji Kalu Weeps, Says Nigeria Is Not Fair by BleedingPen(op): 3:52pm On Jun 10, 2023
Senate Chief Whip, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, alias OUK, on Saturday, wept profusely during the valedictory session of the 9th Senate, saying he was wrongful jailed by Nigeira, while insisting that he is not a thief and the country has not been fair to him.

Kalu, who was prosecuted over an alleged N7.1bn fraud by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for over 12 years, recalled how he donated money to nurture the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The former Abia governor who earlier noted that his valedictory remarks would be a little bit emotional, wept while speaking, narrating how he has been treated politically, especially by those he helped build.

Kalu said: “Before I came into politics, I could buy anything money can buy. I’m not a thief. Those that put me in prison know the reason. They took over my businesses and wanted to kill me yet I survived it and I’m in the senate with you.

“I have never lacked, while I was in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) where I served for two terms as governor, I brought the money that they used in forming that party, every penny, in 1997 and 1998, and I later became a thief.

“People I gave transport money from my house in Victoria Island became agents. This is what Nigeria represents. Thank you for giving me these four years of uninterrupted support. This country is not fair.”

In 2019, the Lagos division of the Federal High Court sentenced Kalu to 12 years in prison for N7.65 billion fraud.

Justice Mohammed Idris who delivered the sentence had earlier declared him guilty of the charge in the case that had been on since 2007.

However, the supreme Court in 2020 freed Kalu and ordered a fresh trial of the former governor and senator.

The Supreme Court held that the trial High Court Judge, Justice Mohammed Idris, acted without jurisdiction when he convicted Kalu, his firm, Slok Nigeria Limited and a former Director of Finance in Abia State, Jones Udeogu.

It noted that Justice Idris was no longer a judge of the Federal High Court as at December 5, 2019, when he sat and delivered the judgement that convicted the defendants for allegedly stealing about N7.1billion from Abia state treasury.

According to the Supreme Court, Justice Idris, having been elevated to the Court of Appeal before then, lacked the powers to return to sit as a High Court Judge.

It therefore ordered that the charge in suit No. FHC/ABJ/CR/26/2017, which EFCC entered against Kalu and his co-defendants, should be remitted back to Chief Judge of the Federal High Court for re-assignment to any other judge for the trial to commence de-novo (afresh).

But, in 2021, a Federal High Court stopped the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission from retrying Orji Kalu.

Justice Inyang Ekwo gave the order while delivering judgment in an application filed by the former governor seeking an order of the court prohibiting the EFCC from retrying him on a charge for which he had already been tried and convicted.

PoliticsCBN: Emefiele To Leave Nigeria Quietly Without Prosecution — REPORT by BleedingPen(op): 2:12pm On Jun 10, 2023
The suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele, will not be prosecuted by the Nigerian government following his arrest by the Department of State Service (DSS).

According to a report by THE WHISTLER, security and government sources told the newspaper that Emefiele would be removed as CBN governor after his investigation.

The revelation followed controversies surrounding the arrest and detention of Emefiele after he was suspended from office on Friday evening.

Emefiele was suspended by President Bola Tinubu over an ongoing investigation of his office. He was subsequently arrested by the DSS.

The DSS had, however, denied detaining him in a tweet on Saturday, raising eyebrows as to his whereabouts.

However, THE WHISTLER reports that the suspended CBN governor was arrested at about 2 am on Saturday from his residence, contrary to earlier reports that he was arrested Friday evening.

Multiple sources with details of his arrest told THE WHISTLER that Emefiele is still in the custody of the DSS, and the denial by the agency is a part of the exit plan for him to escape without facing prosecution.

A source said: “They cannot prosecute him because if he starts to mention names, Nigeria will catch fire. So, he had to be suspended so they can now come to the media to say, he is being investigated.

“He will soon be left to go and asked to leave the country for now. So, the DSS has to deny he is in their custody to avoid questions from Nigerians on the fate of the CBN governor after his arrest.

“But, the idea is to let him go, and at the moment he is in their custody, located near the Villa. This move is just a way to remove him and this was the best opportunity.”

Other sources corroborated the claims.

THE WHISTLER also reports that the CBN governor knew he would be removed during his recent closed-door meeting with the president at the Villa.

“The meeting they had was to resolve their exit plan and nothing more. Many more heads of security departments will be removed from office soon, in the guise of being investigated.

“So, the DSS has to deny he is in their custody because of the plan,” another source said.

Many Nigerians have applauded the president for suspending Emefiele as they recount the unfavorable policies of the CBN under him and how it adversely affected them in past years.

Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and former Kano state governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has described the immediate-past Kano governor, Abdullahi Ganduje as his “political boy.”

Kwankwaso stated this in an interview with BBC Hausa, while calling the bluff of Ganduje, his successor, who said he (Ganduje) would have slapped him (Kwankwaso) if he had met him face-to-face at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, Friday.

Ganduje was in the Villa to report Kwankwaso to President Bola Tinubu over the current demolition of property going on in Kano State. Kwankwaso too, was in the Villa at the same time as Ganduje, but they did not get to meet.

“I know that he (Kwankwaso) is in the building. But we did not meet inside. I would have slapped him if I met him inside,” Ganduje told journalists, describing the demolitions in Kano carried out by Governor Abba Yusuf as “illegal”, calling the governor a stooge of Kwankwaso.

However, speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa early Saturday morning, Kwankwaso described Ganduje as one of his “political boys” who can’t even look at him straight on the face let alone dare raise a finger against him.

“I heard that he (Ganduje) said he would’ve slapped me, but I’m here. He was just confused. These are all my boys politically. They can’t even look at me straight on the face if we meet. He was in a confused state when he said that, these my political boys if they see me they lower their gaze,” Kwankwaso said.

Kwankwaso told BBC Hausa that he met with President Bola Tinubu for about 2 hours at the Presidential Villa, Abuja and was able to convince him on the alleged land deals and other infractions of the Ganduje administration in Kano state.

Ganduje served as Kwankwaso’s deputy from 1999 – 2003 and 2011 – 2015, when the latter was governor of Kano State. He (Ganduje) later succeeded Kwankwaso as governor of Kano from 2015 – 2023.
