Governorship candidate of the Action Peoples Party (APP) for the 2023 gubernatorial election in Abia state, Chief Mascot Uzor Kalu, has been invested into the order of Knights of St John International (KSJI).

Igbere TV reports that the investiture took place at the KSJI Grand Commandery, Maria Assumpta Cathedral, Owerri, the Imo State capital, on Friday.

The former Abia Chief of Staff was invested alongside two others - Sir Emeka Diwe and Sir Marcel Eze - whom he described as his friends.

During the colourful event, the knights were advised to live a life of more service, dedication to humanity, rekindle their zeal for service to God and defend the church at all time.

While knighting Chief Kalu, the Bishop charged the Governorship hopeful to always obey the charge of knighthood which includes sacrifice, meekness, humility and bring these to bear in all endeavors.

Chief Mascot Uzor Kalu in an interview with journalists, shortly after the investiture, described the honour as a call for greater christian service, which has been his hallmark.

He thanked the Knights of St. John International Nigeria for finding him worthy to be a part of the Knighthood, as he recommits his faith in God.

According to him, the investiture will further spur him to rededicate himself more to humanity and the defense of the church.

“With God on my side, I promise to use this recognition as a platform for more service to God and humanity,” Chief Mascot Uzor Kalu noted.

The investiture attracted dignitaries including wife of the APP governorship candidate, Mrs Adaeze Uzor-Kalu, members of the APP and Mascot Uzor Kalu Campaign Organisations, friends and retinue of aides.

Foremost governorship candidate in the forthcoming March 11, 2023 gubernatorial election in Abia State, Chief Mascot Uzor Kalu, says a political solution remains the best option to resolve the federal government's impasse with the detained Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Kanu has been in Department of State Services (DSS) custody since June 2021 after he was renditioned by the Nigerian government from Kenya in June 2021, an action his lawyers termed as “illegal, unlawful, unconstitutional extradition.”

The outspoken IPOB leader has been standing trial on charges bordering on alleged treasonable felony and terrorism before the Federal High Court in Abuja, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Speaking on a radio programme on Real FM, Aba, on Tuesday, monitored by Igbere TV, Chief Mascot said he strongly believes Kanu's release requires more of a political approach than a legal one.

The Action Peoples Party (APP) gubernatorial candidate spoke when a caller phoned in during the live radio programme to inquire about his position or stance on Kanu's case.

Addressing the caller, Chief Mascot Uzor Kalu said a political solution was still possible for the IPOB leader's release from custody in this circumstance.

According to the former Chief of Staff to Abia State Governor, such a political solution may not come easy, however, such move is what the case requires at this time.

Although he did not totally rule out a legal solution, Chief Mascot, however, believes a political solution from Abia henchman was the best approach on the matter.

Chief Mascot who acknowledged that other South East leaders may have tried to intervene in the matter, however, believes an intervention from a governor of Kanu's Abia home state would carry more weight.

“I believe that, at this point, only the Governor of Abia State - where Nnamdi Kanu hail from - has the more political will to seek or secure a political release for Nnamdi Kanu,” he said.

The APP governorship candidate declared that, if elected as governor, he would seek and negotiate the release of the IPOB leader, adding, “only the Governor of Abia has the political will to seek or secure a political release for Kanu.”

“It is achievable and realisable but only through a strong political will,” Chief Mascot insisted that the political solution should come from the Abia state government.

Addressing the supporters and party faithfuls who had come out in their number to receive the former Chief of Staff, Chief Mascot called on the people of Abia to elect him as Governor come March 11, 2023, vowing to lead by example.

He said that the Action Peoples Party was out to rescue the state, rewrite history in Abia and make the Southeastern "God's own state" great again.

Chief Mascot said his party will embark on several people-oriented projects and programmes including solar-powered community boreholes, road project in every local government area and functional health care centres in every local government area with free medical care.

Others, he said, were free education from primary to secondary level, revolution in the Agriculture sector starting with provision of fertilizer to farmers, generation of 10,000 jobs every year in four years for Abia youths and women and prompt payment of salaries and pension to teachers and civil servants in the state.

On his part, the Deputy Governorship candidate, Professor Osondu Akoma who re-echoed the campaign promises of his party, said the APP would re-introduce free primary health care, and free primary and secondary education in the state.

Chairmen of the party in the Wards and party faithfuls who spoke in turns, vowed to enthrone good governance in Abia State by voting massively and electing Chief Mascot Uzor Kalu as Governor come March 11, 2023.

Publisher of SaharaReporters and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Mr. Omoyele Sowore has condemned the brutalisation of students of the University of Benin by men of the Nigerian Army over a ‘disagreement.’

Taking to Twitter, Friday, to register his displeasure over the treatment melted out on the students by the soldiers, Sowore called on the Nigerian Army to fish out the culprits.

“I wholeheartedly condemn the unprovoked and dastardly attack on peace loving students of the University of Benin @UniversityBenin by Nigerian soldiers @HQNigerianArmy over a disagreement between students and soldiers at the ATM. The soldiers involved must be fished and prosecuted,” he wrote.

On Thursday, some students of UNIBEN and soldiers from the Supply & Transport (S&T) Barracks in Benin City clashed within the university premises, resulting from resistance of the students to the soldiers’ attempt to jump ATM queues on campus.

The soldiers were said to have descended heavily on a female student who they assumed was recording their ungodly act on tape, destroying her phone in the process. This, however, did not go down well with other civilians on queue who attempted to mediate or intervene.

Things, however, escalated quickly after the soldiers reportedly attempted to forcefully abduct the student to their barrack apparently to ‘deal with her’ but for the quick intervention of the school security department. The security officers, however, met a strong resistance from the soldiers who allegedly assaulted the officers including the Chief Security Officer.

CAMPUS GIST gathered that the soldiers who had earlier retreat back to base regrouped and invaded the university campus at night to beat up security officers on night duty, destroying several vehicles parked on campus.

Some unarmed civilians including residents-staff on campus who were attempting to use the ATMs on bank road in the school premises were caught up in the ‘reprisals’ as they were also not left out as the soldiers reportedly pounced on them, leaving them with various degree of injuries.

Some of the injured, it was gathered, were taken to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for urgent medical attention. A medical personnel at the hospital told this online media that many of the injured were brought in early morning and they(medical personnel) had a busy time attending to the wounded.

Scores of unarmed civilians have been left injured and several vehicles destroyed at the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Ugbowo main campus, in alleged revenge attacks launched by the Nigerian military.

The alleged ‘reprisals’ came last night following Thursday’s clash between some UNIBEN students and soldiers, resulting from resistance of the students to the soldiers’ attempt to jump ATM queues on campus.

The soldiers were said to have descended heavily on a female student who they assumed was recording their ungodly act on tape. This, however, did not go down well with other civilians on queue who attempted to mediate or intervene.

Things, however, escalated quickly after the soldiers reportedly attempted to forcefully abduct the student to their barrack apparently to ‘deal with her’ but for the quick intervention of the school security department. The security officers, however, met a strong resistance from the soldiers who allegedly assaulted the officers including the Chief Security Officer (CSO).

The development reportedly led to a mid retaliation from angry civilians. In a viral video seen by this online media, one of the soldiers could be seen on the floor, temporarily restrained and neutralised. He would later manage to scale the university’s fence and call for backup.

CAMPUS GIST gathered that the soldiers believed to be from S&T Barracks in Benin City invaded the university campus at night by scaling the perimeter fencing to beat up security officers on night duty, destroying several vehicles parked on campus.

Some unarmed civilians including staff on campus who were attempting to use the Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) on bank road in the school premises were caught up in the ‘reprisals’ as they were also not left out as the soldiers pounced on them, leaving them with various degree of injuries.

A drive past the UNIBEN Ugbowo main campus early Friday morning show vehicles belonging to the institution and private individuals were not left out in the reprisals as the windscreens were completely shattered and destroyed by the soldiers.

Some of the injured, this Reporter gathered, were taken to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for urgent medical attention. A medical personnel at the hospital told this online media that many of the injured were brought in early morning and they(medical personnel) had a busy time attending to the wounded.

As at the time of filing this report, the University Management has appealed to staff and students for calm and not take law into their hands or protest over the development.

In a statement made available to CAMPUS GIST early Friday morning personally signed by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Lilian Salami, she said management was in discussion with the hierarchy of the Nigerian Army for amicable resolution.

“The Management acknowledges that these are challenging times for everyone and enjoins all to remain calm while efforts are being made to avert a re-occurrence,” she said.

Professor Salami called on the students to “constantly engage dialogue in resolving issues that concern them rather than taking to protests, at any provocation, thereby causing more injury and damage to themselves and other citizens.”

Management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) in Edo State has appealed to staff and students for calm and not take law into their hands or protest over the alleged assault on one of their colleagues by soldiers on campus.

Things, however, escalated quickly after the soldiers attempted to forcefully abduct the student to their barrack apparently to ‘deal with her’ but for the quick intervention of the school security department. The security personnel, however, met a strong resistance from the soldiers who would later assault the school security officers including the University’s Chief Security Officer (CSO).

The development reportedly led to retaliation from civilians and passersby. In a viral video seen by this online media, one of the soldiers could be seen on the floor being taught a “lesson” he would never forget in a hurry. He would later manage to scale the fence and call for backup.

Reacting in a statement made available to CAMPUS GIST on Friday signed by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Lilian Salami, she said management was in discussion with the hierarchy of the Nigerian Army for amicable resolution.

The statement reads, “The unfortunate incident of the clash between some students of our university and soldiers on Thursday 2nd February, resulting from alleged resistance of students to the soldiers’ attempt to jump ATM cues on campus has been brought under control and the Management of the University is in discussions with the hierarchy of the S & T for amicable resolution.

“The Management acknowledges that these are challenging times for everyone and enjoins all to remain calm while efforts are being made to avert a re-occurrence.

“Management also calls on the students to constantly engage dialogue in resolving issues that concern them rather than taking to protests, at any provocation, thereby causing more injury and damage to themselves and other citizens.”

Eyewitnesses told this online media that the soldiers would not join the queue or take permission from anybody but forcefully push their way to the front in their numbers.

They were said to have descended heavily on a female student who they assumed was recording their ungodly act on tape. This did not go down well with other students on queue.

Not satisfied, the soldiers, it was gathered, attempted to forcefully abduct the student to their barrack apparently to deal with her but for the quick intervention of the school security department.

In a bid to carry out their plan by all means, the soldiers reportedly pounced on and assaulted the school's security personnel including the Chief Security Officer (CSO).

The development reportedly led to retaliation from civilians. In a viral video seen by this Reporter, one of the soldiers could be seen on the floor being taught a “lesson” he wouldn't forget in a hurry. He would later manage to escape and call for backup.

Staff and students were, however, seen stopping a van belonging to the Nigerian Army apparently conveying the backup soldiers from entering the University's premises.

Efforts to obtain comments from the Nigerian Army, S&T Barracks proved abortive. As at the time of filing this report, Management of the University was yet to react to the development.

But, the students have not taken to the University main gate, blocking a part of the ever-busy Uselu-Lagos expressway and disrupting vehicular movement.

They claim some of their wounded colleagues and security personnel have been taken to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for medical attention.

Their is tension on campus over fears that the soldiers who have now retreated to their base may return in group to cause trouble for the students. As at the time of filing this report, the University main gate was still shut.

In continuation of yesterday’s protest, students of the University of Benin have returned to the premises of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital to demand answers and justice over the death of their colleague.

CAMPUS GIST had on Tuesday reported how Mr. Andrew Perez, a fresh Education graduate of the University of Benin died at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital located in Benin City.

The development had sparked protest from the deceased’s colleagues who attributed his untimely death to alleged negligence on the part of the federal teaching hospital’s doctors.

They accused the doctors of abandoning the former Director of Sports and allowing him to die after they had admitted him on emergency ground and paid all the charges.

A clip obtained by CAMPUS GIST also saw one of the students accuse the Hospital Management of admitting the patient to an empty oxygen while he battled for his dear life.

Meanwhile, despite confrontation with men of the Nigerian police on Tuesday, the aggrieved students obviously determined to get answers and demand justice for their late colleague, have returned to the streets.

The students defied the heavy security presence at the Hospital premises on Wednesday morning to protest the lackadaisical attitude of doctors to patients, especially UNIBEN students.

Earlier, at least three security vans belonging to the Ugbowo police division and another belonging to local vigilante group were sighted by this reporter, stationed at the hospital premises.

As at the time of filing this report, the students have tabled their demands before the Hospital Management and currently being addressed by the UBTH Chief Medical Director, Prof. Darlington Obaseki.

The Kwara State University has declared Wednesday 25th January, 2023, as work-free day to enable staff of the institution obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the 2023 general elections.

According to a statement obtained by CAMPUS GIST Tuesday night issued by the Institution’s Registrar, Dr. Kikelomo Sallee, the approval was given by the Kwara State Government.

“In view of this, all Staff are directed to take advantage of the holiday to collect their PVC to enable them exercise their civic rights,” the Registrar said.

The statement, however, advised Staff on essential services to be at their duty posts, while the University will consider giving days off as appropriate.

“Yesterday, Mr. Perez was screaming of stomach pain. We met the doctor, he said he was attending to another patient. He just came and gave him(Perez) an injection and left.

“They malhandled an emergency case and were turning us up and down for x-ray, scan etc. The last thing one of the doctors said was that his intestine was struggling with the scar from his previous [appendices] surgery.

“They connected pipe through his nostrils and privates that they were flushing his system, plus drip... he didn't eat anything throughout yesterday...”, one of the students lamented.

As at the time of filing this report, officers from the BDPA police station, Ugbowo, have taken over the hospital premises where the protest is currently taking place.

Management of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) has lauded the University of Benin Alumni Association North America (UBAANA) for its kind donation of the sum of N5,760,000,00 to the University Management.

The University’s appreciation message was conveyed in a letter addressed to the President and members of UBAANA by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Lilian Salami.

A copy of the letter made available to CAMPUS GIST was dated November 28, 2022, and titled “letter of acknowledgement and appreciation.”

The donation by UBAANA, this online media reliably gathered, is for the purchase of computers and other accessories to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the Exams and Records Division of the University.

Meanwhile, the University has since utilised the donation for the purchase of computers and other accessories to enhance the processing and issuance of transcripts to its Alumni worldwide.

The Vice Chancellor, who noted this, thanked UBAANA President, Mr Alex Eronmwon and members of the Association for the kind gesture and assured that the items would be used for the purpose for which they were meant for.

Since inception, UBAANA has been actively involved in rallying support for the development of its Alma mater, offering tremendous help to the present administration. Only recently, the Association built and donated a relaxation centre to the Ekehuan campus of the University, in giving back to the society.

•UNIBEN holds Commendation Service

The remains of late former Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Professor Emeritus Osayuki Godwin Oshodin was, yesterday, committed to mother earth, in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

This was following a Funeral Service held at the Rev. Emokpae Memorial Baptist Church, in Benin City at 10:00AM. CAMPUS GIST understands that, the interment was strictly for family members only.

Meanwhile, the ceremony will come to a close with a Thanksgiving Service at the Rev. Emokpae Memorial Baptist Church on Sunday 21st August by 10:00AM, followed by entertainment of guests at Horatio Marquee, Edo Hotel, GRA, Benin City.

Earlier on Friday 19th August, 2022, a commendation service was organised by the University of Benin in honour of her fallen first indigenous Vice Chancellor of Benin extraction.

The service, monitored by CAMPUS GIST, was attended by the wife of the deceased who is also the immediate past Registrar of UNIBEN, Mrs Otasowie Oshodin; children, and family members of Oshodin.

Members of the University management team led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Lilian Salami; former Vice Chancellors of the institution, and several Professor Emerita graced the ceremony.

The event also attracted visiting Vice Chancellors including VCs of Igbinedion University, Okada, Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye, University of Delta, Agbor, Prof. (Mrs) Stella Chiemeke; and Rector, Edo State Polytechnic, Usen, Prof. Abiodun Falodun, amongst others.

CAMPUS GIST (CG) reports that some striking union members and staff of the University defied the ongoing strike by university unions to pay their last respect to the man who had been termed “Uniben unifier”.

In his sermon, the officiating minister eulogised the deceased for being a good and upright man, touching the lives of many, putting food on their table by taking their bread winners off the Labour market.

He asked the gathering to pray to God and ask for the grace to “die well”. His mind words about Oshodin, this Newspaper observed, was met with a loud minute-long ovation for the deceased by the gathering.

At the ceremony, a compendium of tributes which was published by the University in honour of her late former Vice Chancellor, was formally distributed to the family and attendees

CG reports that late Professor Emeritus Oshodin, the UNIBEN 8th substantive Vice Chancellor, died early Sunday morning 29th May, 2022, in Benin City, at 71, after a brief illness.

Until his demise, Prof. Oshodin was married to Mrs Otasowie, immediate past Registrar of UNIBEN. He was at last year’s Convocation of the University unveiled as Professor Emeritus.

An official of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest zone, Awoyinfa Opeoluwa, has been accused of drugging and raping a female student of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA).

Twitter user, Samzy (@SamzyVG), made the allegations in a series of tweets sighted by CAMPUS GIST on his Twitter handle late Tuesday night.

According to him, the victim who earlier got the accused arrested and detained at the police station later settled for “out-of-court settlement” where she demanded for a Ten Million Naira (N10,000,000) compensation for damages.

He said the suspect bargained for a Three Hundred Thousand Naira (N300,000) compensation which he claimed was paid to the victim and the accused was thereafter granted bail and allowed to go home.

CAMPUS GIST gathered that the accused person is an alumnus of FUTA and Public Relations Officer of NANS in Zone D, which covers Southwest; while his alleged victim is a 500-level student of Animal, Production, FUTA.

The trending story which was told under the hash tag, #FUTARapeStory, appears to have been collaborated by other tweeps who seem to know the accused person and familiar with his reported “escapades”.

A Twitter user, Flora Oladipupo commented: “Always in the news for something bad from his days as a futarian and now outside of FUTA. What scares me is one day he’ll apply for a delicate political position and might win cos people outside of FUTA won’t know the menace he was from his student/SUG days.”

Another user, Adetutu, wrote: “Does he not get tired, he probably just enjoys preying on girls, almost everybody has heard about him before now, I just don’t get how he’s still walking freely. Boya won de shepe fun ni”.

For Oluwaseun: “Why would that lady in #Futarapestory space say the victim is supposed to know about opiano because she’s in 500l?! Hello there’s no sense in that pls. How is she suppose to know everyone in Futa?,” she queried.

Another user, Sole Joseph wrote, “We were in same faculty tho and never heard of this his side of life.But with my few findings now I heard his popular rape trend began when he got a car and some of us already graduated before he got his car. He’s got to pay for his sins anyway and others like him. Dem plenty.”

Taking to Twitter, while commenting under the rape post, the group wrote, “Thank you for blowing the whistle, please note that the leadership of @FemaleNational both at the national and Ondo state level has taken this up since yesterday.

“But till this morning, the state Chairperson who’s also the former SUG VP of futa couldn’t get in touch with victim.

“We will update you under this tweet as we progress. Thanks.”

Meanwhile, all efforts to speak with the accused person to hear his own side of the story proved abortive. This online medium was yet to establish the veracity of the report as the identity of the alleged victim remain largely unknown as at the time of filing this report.

Ahead of the 2023 presidential election, a group under the aegis of the Nigerian Diaspora Youth Coalition, NDYC, has thrown its weight in support of the flag bearer of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi.

The NDYC, which is the umbrella body of Nigerian youths in diaspora, took the resolution of adopting Mr. Obi as its candidate at the extraordinary special meeting held in Dallas, Texas, the United States of America, on Wednesday.

According to the group, Mr. Obi was adopted after a thorough screening of the credentials of all other candidates participating in next year's elections.

“In the course of our daily engagements across the globe, we have been inundated with an astronomical level of support for the presidential aspiration of Mr. Peter Obi,” the NDYC said.

“His acceptance level among the youths is phenomenal. Despite how things are in Nigeria today, we still believe we have a credible candidate that can salvage the country in the person of Obi.”

In a voice vote put forward by the Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT), Engr. Osasere Osifo, all members of the Board of NDYC, unanimously voted to adopt the ex-Anambra governor as its sole presidential candidate.

In a communique issued at the end of the meeting and made available to journalists, Mr. Enoma Eribo, a member of the Board of Trustees (BoT), justified the adoption of Mr. Obi as the “right move.”

He said the group's preference and support for Mr. Peter Obi were based on his track record of achievements and impacts on people at home and abroad.

Eribo described the LP presidential candidate and his running mate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, as “the most qualified candidates on the ballot for the upcoming elections.”

The Legal Adviser of the organization, Prince Ulame Erese, also stressed the need for all persons of all professions and skills to put their hands on deck to rescue the country from its present state by supporting Peter Obi. Other members of the BoT who spoke separately to reporters are Mr. Bright Olubunmi and Mr. Hope Ubani. They both expressed satisfaction with the screening process and expressed confidence in the candidacy of Peter Obi.

“At the end of our consolidation meeting with participants drawn across the board, we x-rayed the rich resume and accomplishments of Mr. Peter Obi and, therefore, adopted him as our preferred choice for the Nigerian presidency in the 2023 general elections,” the communique read in part.

In further explaining its position, the NDYC said that it was impressed by Obi's “academic prowess, ingenuity, poise, and determination to make Nigeria work again,” adding that “his exposure, experience, and doggedness distinguished him from his contemporaries.”

The NDYC stressed that the Labour Party's flag bearer would offer the people of Nigeria “a robust, efficient and effective leadership” if elected President, going by his outstanding leadership qualities and previous track records of exceptional performance.

The group, therefore, promised to “rally round, campaign vigorously and mobilize all necessary resources to ensure Mr. Peter Obi emerged victorious at the general poll come 2023.”

•VC warns against Cultism

AGBOR — The recently established University of Delta (UNIDEL), Agbor, on Friday July 8, 2022 matriculated a total of 2,001 newly admitted students for the 2021/2022 academic session.

CAMPUS GIST reports that the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Mrs) Stella Chiemeke gave the figure at the maiden matriculation ceremony held in Agbor, the institution’s main campus.

Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. Chiemeke described the event as significant, “as it marks the formal enrolment of the matriculating students into the university’s academic program, in line with the recommendations of the National Universities Commission.”

“The ceremony also provides an opportunity for you, young men and women, to pledge your allegiance to the authority of the University through the administration of the Matriculation Oath,” she said, adding, “You will also be expected to contribute your quota to enhancing the university’s image wherever you find yourself and to ensure that you do not bring the university’s name into disrepute.”

The Vice Chancellor congratulated the newly matriculated students, saying “you have been admitted to the prestigious University of Delta due to your hard work, drive, and perseverance. Today, as you officially start the next stage of your educational career, I want you to focus and realize that in front of you, like a winding road, lie tremendous opportunities and experiences that will define your university experience and set you on the path of your professional and personal life.”

“At UNIDEL we take pride in not only training students in academic work but also in character so that upon graduation, the student is entirely ready to be responsible citizens who will contribute to national development in a patriotic and result-oriented manner. So we recommend that you emulate the example of your mentors and teachers in self-discipline, self-care, and a suitable mode of dressing.”

Prof. Chiemeke called on the matriculating students to shun cultism and hooliganism “as UNIDEL is pledging zero tolerance on its activities, fidelity to your studies and work, and general comportment so that you will not be found wanting at any time.”

“Your primary aim for coming here is to study, and I urge you to channel your energies in that direction. Remember that you were admitted to the University as an individual and will graduate as an individual. You are, therefore, solely responsible for all your actions. Over time, you will encounter new experiences. Some of you will enter new relationships, some of which may be life-long. By all means, enjoy them but remain focused.

“As your lecturers, hall managers and advisors, we shall be available to guide you, so long as you are willing to be trained. We will give you all the necessary support, but only if you use legitimate means to seek such consent. Remember to make time to read official notices and pay attention to University rules and regulations. These will guide you and help you make the right decisions regarding your time here,” Prof. Chiemeke added.

The Vice Chancellor disclosed that the Legal Education Council has accepted a visit to the University after the Eid-el-Kabir break, to approve the Law Programme. “Immediately after that, the University will publish the list of the Law admitted students,” she said.

‘UNIDEL’S VISION’

According to the Vice Chancellor, although this is the institution’s first matriculation ceremony, “the University has a strategic vision to offer the best in cutting-edge research and service delivery in science, engineering, leadership and management. To this end, the University is partnering with world-class universities across the globe to enable her to deliver on the excellence geared toward producing competent graduates capable of meeting the challenges of national development.”

Prof. Chiemeke disclosed that the institution’s pioneer students of the Department of Cyber Security have made a remarkable achievement as they won medals at the 5th Annual Hackathon Cyber Security Conference. “Amos Dominion Elo and Obi Michael Elo were tested on Open Source Intelligence, Digital Forensics, and Reverse Engineering in a competition involving the best and the brightest in Cyberspace Technology, drawn from about sixty (60) universities. The 2022 Annual Hackathon and Cyber Security Conference, which took place in Abuja, saw the UNIDEL team emerging 15th in the 1st stage, which got them to the grand finale, where they appeared 5th overall best,” Prof. Chiemeke added.

She continued, “The University’s strategic vision is to be an institution of excellence geared toward producing competent graduates capable of meeting national development challenges. We do not doubt that this University is firmly positioned to solve the unemployment problems in Delta State and Nigeria. Therefore, graduates of this University cannot join the army of job seekers in the nation; they will be owners and pioneers in some years. Indeed, the University has a very tall mission and vision statement; however, our resources are minimal. Nevertheless, we will continue to appeal to all Deltans, men and women of goodwill, to support the University to attain its noble dreams and aspirations.”

‘APPEAL FOR MORE HELP’

While thanking the State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa for his support towards the University so far, the Vice Chancellor called on the Governor to support the University in building a 1,000 capacity Lecture theatres, tar the roads within the campuses to befit the University standard, construct the University Main Auditorium, and build more hostels and staff quarters.

“In addition, there is a need to establish the College of Medicine and invite MDCN (Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria) for the accreditation of the programs,” the Vice Chancellor pleaded with the Governor.

Highlight of the matriculation ceremony was the administration of the Matriculation Oath on the matriculating students by the University Registrar, Barr Richmond Omagbemi.

Dignitaries present at the ceremony include the Dein of Agbor Kingdom, Dr Benjamin Ikechukwu Keagborekwuzi. CAMPUS GIST reports that the ceremony also witnessed the official robing of the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council, Emeritus Prof. Emmanuel A. C. Nwanze by the university Vice Chancellor.
