The Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt Hon Comrade Philip Shaibu, has hailed the duo of Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala for being nominated for the 2023 Ballon d’Or awards.

On Wednesday, nominees for the men and women categories of this year’s Ballon d’Or was unveiled by the organisers.

Osimhen, who is the first Nigerian male footballer to be shortlisted since 1999, will battle it out with Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe, Karim Benzema and Robert Lewandowski and 24 others.

Oshoala, a nominee in the 2022, will hope to beat 29 other shortlisted players to the award.

Reacting, in a statement on Thursday, Shaibu described the nominations as a great plus to football in Nigeria and a reminder to the world that Nigeria remains a great footballing nation, while thanking the duo for putting the country's name back in the comity of footballing nations.

He said, “It gladdens my heart to see that for the first time since 1999, Nigeria has a male player shortlisted for the famous and much coveted Ballon d’Or Award.

“Victor James Osimhen’s nomination is a testament to how terrific he was under the year in review – his huge and apparent contribution to the success of Napoli’s Scuddeto victory since 1990 is historical and his nomination is just a very fitting recognition by the awarding body. This also is a thing of pride for the good people of Edo state.

“For Asisat Oshoala (Agba Baller), I’m happy that her efforts for Barcelona Feminine in winning the tremble with Barcelona (Primera Division title, the Supercopa de Espana Femenina, and the Champions League), scoring 21 league goals and becoming joint ‘League’s Highest Goals Scorer’ in the process as well as her performance at the FIFA women’s World Cup helping us beat Australia against all odds didn’t go unnoticed by experts who have nominated her as the first African Women Footballer for the award.

“This is a great plus to our football in Nigeria and a reminder to the world that Nigeria remains a great footballing nation.

“I want to thank these “wonderful players once again for putting our name back in the comity of footballing nations.

“This, I believe will serve as motivation to other young players out there that they can get to the level they desire as much as they remain consistent and determined to push their goal, regardless of whatever obstacles they may encounter along the journey to attain their goal.”

Last season Osimhen helped Napoli land a first league title since 1990 and also finished top scorer with 26 goals.

On her part, Oshoala played a key role as Barcelona won both the Spanish league and the UEFA women’s Champions League last campaign.

The winners of the 2023 Ballon d’Or award for both men and women will be known at a ceremony in Paris, France on Monday, October 30.

PoliticsObaseki Vs Shaibu: Gov Relocates Deputy Gov's Office From Govt House (PHOTO) by BleedingPen(op):
The ongoing feud between Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State and his Deputy, Philip Shaibu, took a new twist as Obaseki on Friday approved the relocation of the Deputy Governor's Office from Government House.

The deputy governor's new office, an abandoned government property, is located at No. 7, Dennis Osadebe Avenue, GRA, Benin City, several kilometres away from government house.

Already, the state government has erected a signpost at the front of the property to indicate that the building has now been designated as the deputy governor's new office.

Although, the state government is yet to formally confirm the development. Government House sources said the Governor hinged the development on the need to carry out an urgent renovation of the deputy governor's office.

It, was, however gathered that the development is not unconnected with the ongoing rift between Governor Obaseki and Shaibu as the Deputy Governor's Office reportedly underwent renovation less than a year ago.

It was gathered that the Governor has ordered the removal of the Deputy Governor's Office roof in government house to pave way for the supposed renovation. But, pundits believe the move is to prevent Shaibu from accessing his office.

This is a developing story ... more to come!

EducationBREAKING: AAU Ekpoma Dissolves Students’ Union After Protest Against Fee Hike by BleedingPen(op):
Management of the Edo-state owned Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, has announced the dissolution of the Institution’s Students’ Union with immediate effect.

The dissolution was announced in a statement issued on Friday by Engr. Dr. E. Ufuah, Acting Dean of Students’ of the University.

METROWATCHXTRA.COM reports that the dissolution followed a protest against school fee hike and other sundry issues led by the Students’ Union officials on Thursday and Friday.

Announcing the dissolution, the AAU management said the protests disrupted academic and administrative activities in the University, and created security tension.

Management, therefore, directed the affected Students’ Union officials to return all union properties in their possession to the Security Division within 48 hours.

The statement reads, “While it is not out of place for students to exercise their right to protest, it is paramount to emphasize that there are laid down procedures to be adopted, which are clearly defined in the Student Information Handbook.

“The protests of 31st August and 1st September, 2023 by students led by the Student Union officials, which manifested in the illegal locking of the University main gate, clearly disrupted academic and administrative activities in the University, and created security tension.

“Specifically, it disrupted the commendation service for late Rev. Professor Moses Isunu Ailemen, which had been scheduled to take place at the International/Students Conference Center on 1st September, 2023.

“To this end, the Student Union, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma has completely flouted the provisions of Section 19, subsections (h) and (1) of the rules and regulations enshrined in the Student Information Handbook Under subsection (1), it is clearly stated, without any form of ambiguity, that the organizers of demonstration must ensure that there is no disruption or obstruction of educational and other activities of the University including administration, lecture, tutorial, and other related events.

“Consequent on the above, the entire Student Union, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma is hereby dissolved and stands dissolved. The Student Union officials should return all union properties in their possession to the Security Division within 48 hours.”

Management advised all students to go about their normal academic activities as all issues in contention will be resolved through dialogue and other relevant mechanisms.

A mammoth crowd of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) supporters and political associates waited all day to receive the Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt Hon Comrade Philip Shaibu as he arrived his Jattu country home in Etsako West Local Government Area on Thursday night ahead of Saturday’s Local Government Council elections.

Shaibu, who watched the finals of the WAFU ‘B’ Women football tournament at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium earlier on Thursday evening, left Benin at about 6:30PM and arrived his country home at about 10:00PM to a tumultuous reception of women, youth and the elderly waiting patiently for his arrival.

The crowd which had waited all day at Utukwe, Market Square, received the Deputy Governor and his wife, Maryann, with drums and traditional songs and led them on foot as they walked down to Shaibu’s residence, a journey of about 1/½ kilometres, singing praises of the State’s Number 2 citizen.

Spokesperson for the Community, John Thomas, alias Uchor, who addressed journalists, assured Shaibu of their support at all times. He pledged their unalloyed loyalty and commitment to their son.

According to the Spokesperson, Jattu (deputy governor’s country home) is ready to sink and swim with him (Shaibu) in the course of his political journey.

I doubt if Shuaibu didn't have a thing up his sleeves too. Look at that picture again and analyze it closely. Shuaibu obviously came in late while the governor and everyone was already seated and made for the governor with all eyes on them. That's a gross breach of protocol. He ought to be seated before the governor.

And I doubt if he had met the governor in private since he returned from the US and after the lawsuit.
Not true, he was already seated before the governor came in. He only tried to meet and greet him after the governor settled down as other dignitaries were doing same!

Photos of Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki and his predecessor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole on Monday broke the internet as both men were seen hugging each other publicly for the first time in many years.

This was at a colloquium organised by the state government to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Midwest Referendum which birthed Edo and Delta States, held at the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

The colloquium, with the theme, ’60 years after the referendum, which way Midwest?’ had in attendance leaders and stakeholders from Edo, Delta and Bayelsa States and across the South South region.

Meanwhile, the photos of Obaseki and Oshiomhole in a warm embrace has come to many as a surprise as both men have been seen as sworn enemies since their fall out ahead of the 2020 Edo governorship election.

Despite the rift between him and his boss, the Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt Hon Comrade Philip Shaibu, on Sunday, reaffirmed his unalloyed loyalty to Governor Godwin Obaseki, whom he described as his elder brother.

Shaibu stated this while addressing journalists shortly after the Interdenominational Thanksgiving Service to mark Edo State 32nd year anniversary, held at the Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City.

Fielding questions from Government House correspondents, Shaibu said whatever disagreement he may have with his boss was strictly a family affair and he (Shaibu) would never address the governor in the media, while maintaining that ambition does not affect loyalty as his loyalty to Obaseki remain absolute.

His words, ”Issues that concern my governor are not what I discuss on camera. He (Obaseki) is my elder brother and boss, if I have any issues with him, I think it is better settled at home not in the media. Family problem are better resolved in a family way.

“I am well brought up and from my Christian background, when you take a vow (with God), you must fulfil it. And the vow I have taken with God is that I will continue to support Godwin Obaseki as the Governor of Edo State from the beginning to the end.

“But that doesn’t stop any other thing that has to do with ambition. Ambition is personal. Ambition does not affect loyalty. My loyalty to the governor remains absolute. I am also in solidarity with the governor and declaring my unalloyed loyalty to the governor,” Shaibu said.

Speaking on Saturday’s Bendel Insurance Football Club of Benin 4-3 victory on penalty kicks over Aso Chlef Football Club of Algeria in the second round of the 2023/2024 CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round, the Deputy Governor congratulated the team for the heroic performance.

Shaibu, who was former captain of Insurance that led the team to the Nigeria Premier Football League two seasons ago, thanked Governor Obaseki for believing in his inability as a former professional footballer and sportsman and allowing him (Shaibu) to handle sports, while also expressing gratitude to members of his team and Edo sport lovers who joined hands to revive the Bendel Insurance Football Club.

Dignitaries who graced the ceremony include Governor Obaseki, representatives of the Governors of Delta and Bayelsa States, Chief Judge of the State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa; Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Blessing Agbebaku; Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie; Prof. Darlington Obaseki, Chief Medical Director, University of Benin Teaching Hospital; Dr. Osahon Enabulele, President, World Medical Association (WMA); Rev Felix Omobude, former Chairman, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN); Allen Onyema, Chairman, Air Peace, among others.

Bendel Insurance Football Club of Benin Saturday evening booked their place in the second round of the 2023/2024 CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round after recording a 4-3 victory on penalty kicks over Association Sportive Olympique de Chlef (ASO Chlef) in Algeria.

The Benin Arsenals had last week defeated their hosts 1-0 in Benin last Saturday and were beaten by the same goal margin to even the game at 1-1 at the 12,000 capacity Salem Mabrouki Stadium, Rouiba, Algiers before going into penalty shootouts where Amas Obasogie became the hero of the night by saving two kicks.

Reacting to the victory this evening, Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu congratulated the team for the heroic performance, saying that they have squizzed out water from the rocks.

Shaibu who was former captain of Insurance that led the team to the Nigeria Premier Football League two seasons ago was full of praises for the boys for making Edo State proud.

According to Shaibu, “This performance is a good representation of the investment of the state in the team in the last seven years. “Congratulations to our darling team Bendel Insurance FC Official for a quality performance and for securing a spot in the 2nd Preliminary Round of the 2023/2024 CAF Confederation Cup.

“Your victory is a great motivation to the government that all its efforts, investment and sacrifices for you are not a waste – thank you”, he noted.

However, the Sports-loving Deputy Governor, specifically singled Amas Obasogie, describing him as “man of the match.”

“Special recognition goes to Amas Obasogie for his outstanding performance and resilience in the goal line – saving one penalty in the regular time and two others in the shootouts when we thought all hopes were lost – he is my man of the Match.

“Once again, Congratulations to the team for putting up a good fight.”

Bendel Insurance will host RS Berkane on September 15 in the first leg of the second preliminary in Benin City, before travelling to Morroco the following week for the second leg.

Insecurity: Nnamdi Kanu's Release Only Way to Show Love for S'East - Rep Amobi Ogah Tells Tinubu

Member representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State in the House of Representatives, Hon. Amobi Ogah, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPoB), Nnamdi Kanu, for peace to reign in the South East region.

Ogah, who is also the Chairman, House Committee on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, made the appeal on Thursday shortly after interfacing with the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, at the governor's country home in Isiala Ngwa Local Government Area of the state.

According to him, the insecurity in the South East region is as a result of the prolonged detention of the IPOB leader.

He, therefore, called on President Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu, as a show of love to Ndigbo.

Ogah explained that the release of Kanu will expose criminal gangs that are using the detention to cover their act of terrorism in the South East.

His words, ”The President has done so much. The only disagreement I have with him is the issue of giving us only five ministers in the entire South East. I think the President should have balanced it to show that really, he loves us.

"I was telling the world that Mr. President loves us. But the only way he can show that he loves us is to give us Nnamdi Kanu by releasing him so that insecurity in the South East will be reduced drastically.

"The issue now is that we don't even know those who are behind the insecurity (in the South East). IPOB will tell you they are not the one, ESN (Eastern Security Network) will tell you they are not involved.

"But some will say the reason is because they are holding Nnamdi Kanu. So my prayer to Mr. President is that he should give him (Kanu) to us as a gift. This will be the best gift he can give to the Igbo nation.

"Release him to us so that we can be able to know those who are really behind the insecurity in South East. When you release this man, we can see reason to hold anybody that is messing up," the lawmaker noted.

Ogah, a Labour Party (LP) lawmaker, has been vocal about the current insecurity in South-East, and his Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State in particular.

A security personnel at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) in Edo State has reportedly slapped a female student of the institution for allegedly wearing a short dress on campus.

The incident, METROWATCH gathered, happened at the Ekosodin back gate’ security post of the University, which leads to the popular off-campus students’ community.

In a video seen by METROWATCH, the unidentified student was seen holding tightly to the shirt of the male security officer, while demanding an explanation for his action.

“Why did you slap me?”, the young lady could be heard saying, while colleagues of the security personnel got involved and pleaded that the student release the security officer.

The security staff’s alleged misconduct has sparked outrage on social media, with Netizens who condemned the act, insisting that the officer had no right to slap the student no matter what.

On Instagram, Chuka Elvis said even the University’s Vice Chancellor has no right to slap a student, noting, “He has no right whatsoever to slap her, the school management did not put him in any capacity to handle such matters, even the VC can’t slap her.”

An Alumna of the school, MaryJane noted, “As an alumni (sic) of this great school tha audacity of non-academic staffs (sic) is appalling, they fee (sic) they are the ruler of moral compass while melting down their frustration on students. We all have a share of this kind of disrespect. That man should be fired to lead by example that UNIBEN don’t support nonsense.”

For Ese, “Even if the dress is short, is it in the place of security man to slap her?”

Ihemeje Omobhude wrote, “What is wrong with her dress? She even wore big hoodie on top, that man needs to be arrested.”

Another user, Peace, noted that the dress was indeed short, saying, “But let’s be honest here, that dressing doesn’t suit the environment but that doesn’t give the security man the audacity to slap her.”

Mheenah wrote, “That dress is not short at all but even if it is against the dress code, what is his reason for slapping her? That’s just transfer of aggression.”

For Obianuju, “Even if she wasn’t dressed appropriately, he has no right whatsoever to slap her. What happened to sending her out of the school premises?”

On his part, Adewale simply wrote, “To slap her, that’s pure assault. Where is the SUG?”

Reacting, a legal practitioner and former Attorney-General of the UNIBEN Students’ Union, Barr. Osayuki King, said the security officer had no right to assault the student.

“I don’t know if “indecent dressing” is a wrong-doing by the University bye-law or regulation and I don’t know how “indecent dressing” has been defined by the University or the security man. However, I know that hitting a person without their permission is an offense and the offender can be sued for that without recurse to the issue of “indecent dressing”,” he said.

As at the time of filing this report, the University Management is yet to formally react to the incident. But, the Institution frowns at indecent dressing and has a handbook on ‘Dress Code’ for students.

In Nigeria, assault is unlawful and constitutes an offence unless it is authorised or justified or excused by law. The act contravenes the provisions of sections 265 and 247 of the Penal Code.

Engr Gideon Ikhine, a former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant in the Edo 2020 governorship election, has formally joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) after dumping the PDP.

Recall that Ikhine officially resigned his membership of the ruling PDP in Edo, in a letter dated July 8, 2023 and addressed to the Chairman, PDP Ward 7, Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.

The former gubernatorial aspirant who did not give reasons for his decision at that time, had also failed to disclose his next political move as he kept mute on his new political party.

However, Ikhine has now obtained a membership card of the APC in his Ward 7, Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, formally cementing his membership of his new party.

Addressing party faithful and supporters who thronged the APC secretariat to witness the event, Ikhine reiterated his commitment to the people of Ward 7, Esan West Local Government and Edo people, saying he remain firm and resolute in serving the people.

Ikhine was one of the leading aspirants who withdrew from the Edo 2020 governorship contest for incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki who later secured the PDP ticket to win re-election for a second term.

He is believed to be interested in giving another shot at the forthcoming Edo governorship election taking place next year, 2024, and may have now joined the APC to actualise his long-term ambition.

Sex-for-grades: ‘He Failed me Twice for Refusing to Show Him my Body’ — AAU Student cries out

A female student of the Edo State-owned Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, (names withheld), has cried out after a lecturer allegedly failed her twice ‘for refusing to accede to his demands.’

The Theatre and Media Art student, who gave the lecturer’s name simply as Mr. Peter, claimed she failed the man’s course twice after she refused to show him her body.

“A lecturer failed me cox (sic) I refused to bring down my trouser and show him my waist beed baby in his office. He failed me twice,” the student said in a conversation with someone who appeared to be her lover.

“When he called me into his office, I thought maybe he wanted me to help him do something not knowing he wants to see my body,” the student alleged in the chats posted on the School's group chat obtained by METROWATCHXTRA.COM.

Meanwhile, some students’ leaders including a past Union executive of the AAU Students’ Union Government have promised to look into the allegations raised by the student.

“If there are solid proof to this pls (sic) link her up with me and the matter will be treated swiftly thanks,” a former President of the Institution’s Students’ Union, Comrade Osamagbe Eghobamien responded to the inquiry.

However, another student leader in the state, while reacting to the allegations, claimed that the AAU Management have been making education a living hell for students of the Institution.

“The AAU administration are making Education a living hell for students: they extort money from them, they harass students, they don’t even release results on time. Students dropping out day in day out because of all this (sic) unwanted atrocities. I think NANS should just keep an eye on them till they stop thier bad acts,” he said.

It was not immediately clear if the matter has been reported officially to the University’s Management. When this Online Medium reached out to a member of the Institution’s Special Intervention Team (SIT) set up by the State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, he simply declined comment.

All efforts to reach Management on the matter proved abortive as phone calls placed to the known phone lines of the Institution’s Spokesperson, Lawrence Isiraojie, and Acting Registrar, Ambrose Odiase, rang out.

Another top Management official simply asked this Reporter to send a text message as he was in a meeting. However, as at the time of filing this report, the message was yet to be responded to.

Meanwhile, a student of the affected Department, who craved anonymity, said such cases of lecturers harassing students was not new to the Arts’ Faculty as it was rampant in most of the Departments.
