My daughter caught her adulterous mum in the act, spouse tells court

Kunle Falayi

My 17-year-old daughter caught her mother committing adultery, she called me and I found my wife with another man in bed," an emotionally pained husband told a court in Lagos on Wednesday.

The husband, 39-year-old Ojo Joseph, a trader, pleaded with a Grade B Customary Court in Oshodi to dissolve his 18-year-old marriage.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the wife, Bola, 37, who resides at Mafoluku, Oshodi, had filed a suit seeking the dissolution of the marriage, alleging that her husband left with her three children without her consent.

But Joseph said, "I do not want my wife anymore because I caught her sleeping with another man in her parents' house. I also took away my children so that she would not influence them negatively."

The wife, however, owned up to all the allegations made against her by the husband, saying "the allegations are true.

"I did not feel loved and cared for again and that is why I decided to look for another man who has accepted to take care of me. I, therefore, want a divorce so that I can re-marry someone who loves me. ''

She added, "Since my husband joined the Odu'a People's Congress in Shasha in 2008, he has changed with all his attention devoted to the operations of the organisation.

"He hardly comes home to perform his duties as a father and a husband as he was virtually living at the OPC office. I used to take his food to him there.

"There are times the group would clash and opposing group would come to our house to threaten us and even damage our property.

"As a result, our landlord gave us notice to quit the house and in the process, he lost his job and we agreed that the children and I should go and stay with my parents at Mafoluku since he could not afford to rent another accommodation."

The President of the court, Alhaja A.I. Olorunimbe, after listening to the arguments of the couple, ordered the husband to produce the three children of the marriage at the next adjournment on August 12.

US-based firm in Nigeria to crash second-hand car prices

Layi Adeloye

A United States-based auto auction firm, Insurance Auto Auction, has said that it is in Nigeria to redefine the lucrative second-hand car business, better known as tokunboh.

advertisement

The Vice-President of the firm, Mr. Dan Oscarson, told journalists on Thursday in Lagos that the firm would provide buyers the opportunity to import vehicles at exceptional prices.

According to Oscarson, buyers can also import dent cars and repair them when necessary in Nigeria, where the cost of labour and repair is low.

Oscarson said that from the firm's evaluation of the second-hand car market in Nigeria, cars were overpriced as some dealers made over 50 per cent of the cost price as profit.

"With growing demand for affordable transportation around the world, the opportunity to profit from buying and repairing damaged vehicles has become relevant," he said.

He said that the firm provided live and live-online auctions that would enable buyers get exceptional returns in their choice.

He added, "American standards specification (American spec) cars are very desirable in West African markets because of their special features. Our company sells salvage vehicles via live and live-online auction at over 155 locations across the United States.

"Low prices for this type of vehicles make them attractive to buyers who want to repair and use or resell in the local market. It is an opportunity to buy and save a lot of money."

Oscarson said the company was in the country to sensitise the general public on the abundant opportunities in the initiative.

According to him, Nigerians that visit the IAA website have increased by over 100 per cent with over 50 per cent purchase.

He said that the initiative would eliminate the situation where most Nigerians were defrauded in an effort to procure cars through friends abroad.

"Buyers can access our website and collaborate with the company through licensed dealers to fast-track shipment and payment logistics. We were here in 2009 and the volume of quality cars and traffic showed positive indices of growth. We have discovered that purchase of salvage cars is more efficient when compared to overage cars. It's a good offer to people that cannot really afford a new car.

"The company has the most salvage auction facilities in North American selling well over 1.3 million salvage vehicles annually. With more than 26 years experience, from local to global level, we offer an experience advantage that demonstrates the ability to prepare and sell your inventory quickly for great value," he added.

He said that the initiative would lead to wealth creation, employment generation and technology transfer for artisans due to maintenance of the vehicles.

By Peter Duru

MAKURDI- The United Nations Children Fund, UNICEF, has said that of the yearly 800,000 global deaths from malaria infection, about 300,000 are Nigerians.

advertisement

UNICEF added that over 97 per cent of the country's population are also at risk of the disease.

Chief of UNICEF Field 'A' Office, Enugu, Mr. Charles Nzuki, made this known while speaking with newsmen in Makurdi, Benue State.

Nzuki said that most of the victims were children below the age of five, pointing out that the country was responding to cases of infant mortality by increasing appropriate malaria treatment for targeted groups through the implementation of the Affordable Medicines for Malaria, AMFM, and massive distribution of 63 million long lasting insecticidal nets.

He said much still needed to be done to confront the challenges posed by the malaria scourge.

According to him, approximately 90 per cent of these deaths occur in Africa where malaria accounts for about one out of every six of such deaths.

From Oghogho Obayuwana, Abuja

FOLLOWING the success of the scheme thus far, plans are underway to broaden the scope of the United States (U.S.) President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in Nigeria to cover more infectious diseases.

advertisement

Mr. Robbie Nelson, Director, Nigerian Ministry of Defence (MOD) and U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) HIV Programme, stated this yesterday in Abuja while giving an update on the initiative.

Nelson said the PERFAR would soon be extended to include surveillance of other emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases of relevance to the Nigerian military and civilians in the West African sub-region.

He spoke at a joint briefing held at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja alongside Maj.-Gen. Ogbonnaya Njoku, the Programme Research Officer for Nigeria, Dr. Babajide Keshinro and Dr. Ezekiel Akintunde of the Walter Reed programme, managers of the partnership.

Nelson raised the hopes of sufferers of the diseases with the disclosure that a multi-purpose, Diagnostic Laboratory Reference Centre would soon be opened in Nigeria and "everyone will have access to its facilities."

Nelson also disclosed that a vaccine research is currently ongoing in Nigeria, which is meant to take care of HIV/AIDS.

Njoku disclosed that over 81 per cent of those currently taking treatment at the HIV/AIDS centres were civilians, stressing that "the doors are opened to them and that there are no discriminations.

Nigeria, he said, is "moving out of the bracket of being recipient of research to participant of research. We allow civilians to use our facilities. The bulk of our clients are civilians. This is a very important aspect of civil-military relations. The good news also is that we are poised to set up a malaria reference laboratory in the Federal Capital Territory at the Mogadishu Cantonment for greater collaboration, The era of one hand giving and the other receiving is gone. Instead, we have the two hands (MOD and DOD) working together."

On sustainability of the initiative, Njoku said: "There is emphasis on technology transfer. This is already under way in the impressive number of training and research facilities which have been established by our joint programme in a relatively short period.

"Our Laboratory training centre at NAF Hospital, Ikeja is widely regarded as one of the best such facilities in the country. Nearing completion, the Clinical Training and Research Center (CTRC) in Kaduna, with focus on training and research in infectious diseases, will open in the fourth quarter of 2011."

Our principal problem in Nigeria is our mindset. I am currently looking at ways of getting all Nigerians to understand the concept of self interest and common interest and how they apply to our life's. A starting point is overcoming the defeatist attitude we as Nigerians have over the affairs of our life's. We need to exercise faith and take time to educate one another properly. Nothing is impossible unless we make it so.

I am tempted to ask Yoruba Fashola supporter to stop crying on my thread. They are so blinded by the idea of my tribe becoming President in 2015 dat they can't see objectively that Dr Ngozi is the best candidate we have so far.

The Hausa Sanusi supporters are all crying on my thread about how they are not ready for a female president but will be ready in 50years. lollz Just pathetic, if u ask me. Why are dey ready for Mothers Wife's and Sisters? Why not just leave in a Male 'Sparta' world without women?

Igbos still have not made up their mind on their candidate for 2015, so to that effect many are waiting to see and rally at the right time. The few comments we had from Igbo's was optimistic about the prospect of President Ngozi. So we wait and see. 2015 is a crucial year and it will be ride or die for Nigeria. God should save Nigeria.

She wants to make a policy making it hard for this corrupt officals to take the money abroad  is her answer.
Her fellow ministers and her boss the president are the source of this corruption ,should she not start from there and maybe if she refused to take office with GEJ ,citing she would not serve under a corrupt leadership she could be viewed as a viable canditate.
The apple starts to rot from the core and she is a member of the core aka the federal goernment.
True fresh air will have nothing to do with this sort of government which she has served twice!!!
The revolution shall not be televised, no the revolution shall be live. Vote Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala in 2015 to put an end to corrupt practices in Nigeria. We all know all the candidates right now are not viable except Ngozi. She is the only one with the discipline and reputation that is untainted to revive our dead economy. Politics › Re: What Nigeria Needs? Dr Ngozi Okonjo Iweala by Bliss4Lyfe(op): 1:57pm On Jul 27, 2011
^^Doctor Ngozi Okonjo Iweala sure has a lot to say on corruption. Again, let us go for success of our country in 2015 and not vision-less leadership.

And I want to start by telling you a story about that change in Africa. On 15th of September 2005, Mr. Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, a governor of one of the oil-rich states of Nigeria, was arrested by the London Metropolitan Police on a visit to London. He was arrested because there were transfers of 8 million dollars that went into some dormant accounts that belonged to him and his family. This arrest occurred because there was cooperation between the London Metropolitan Police and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of Nigeria - led by one of our most able and courageous people: Mr. Nuhu Ribadu. Alamieyeseigha was arraigned in London. Due to some slip-ups, he managed to escape dressed as a woman and ran from London back to Nigeria where, according to our constitution, those in office as governors, president - as in many countries - have immunity and cannot be prosecuted. But what happened: people were so outraged by this behavior that it was possible for his state legislature to impeach him and get him out of office.

Today, Alams - as we call him for short - is in jail. This is a story about the fact that people in Africa are no longer willing to tolerate corruption from their leaders. This is a story about the fact that people want their resources managed properly for their good, and not taken out to places where they'll benefit just a few of the elite. And therefore, when you hear about the corrupt Africa - corruption all the time - I want you to know that the people and the governments are trying hard to fight this in some of the countries, and that some successes are emerging.

Does it mean the problem is over? The answer is no. There's still a long way to go, but that there's a will there. And that successes are being chalked up on this very important fight. So when you hear about corruption, don't just feel that nothing is being done about this - that you can't operate in any African country because of the overwhelming corruption. That is not the case. There's a will to fight, and in many countries, that fight is ongoing and is being won. In others, like mine, where there has been a long history of dictatorship in Nigeria, the fight is ongoing and we have a long way to go.

But the truth of the matter is that this is going on. The results are showing: independent monitoring by the World Bank and other organizations show that in many instances the trend is downwards in terms of corruption, and governance is improving. A study by the Economic Commission for Africa showed a clear trend upwards in governance in 28 African countries.

And let me say just one more thing before I leave this area of governance. That is that people talk about corruption, corruption. All the time when they talk about it you immediately think about Africa. That's the image: African countries. But let me say this: if Alams was able to export eight million dollars into an account in London - if the other people who had taken money estimated that 20 to 40 billion now of developing countries' monies sitting abroad in the developed countries - if they're able to do this, what is that? Is that not corruption? In this country, if you receive stolen goods, are you not prosecuted? So when we talk about this kind of corruption, let us also think about what is happening on the other side of the globe - where the money's going and what can be done to stop it. I'm working on an initiative now, along with the World Bank, on asset recovery, trying to do what we can to get the monies that have been taken abroad - developing countries' moneys - to get that sent back. Because if we can get the 20 billion dollars sitting out there back, it may be far more for some of these countries than all the aid that is being put together. (Applause)

And what is more important, because we want to get away from oil and diversify - and there are so many opportunities in this one big country, as in many countries in Africa - what was remarkable is that much of this growth came not from the oil sector alone, but from non-oil. Agriculture grew at better than 8 percent. As telecoms sector grew, housing and construction, and I could go on and on. And this is to illustrate to you that once you get the macro-economy straightened out, the opportunities in various other sectors are enormous.

It is time we had our Obama moment. Stop all your sentiment and think about the type of future u want for your kids. The type of country u want your kids to grow up in. That is important than your tribal man being President becos u personally won't gain anything from them as usual.

so in her term as minster of finance we still remain 178th in GDP per capita worse then in 1999 and 70% live below poverty line .Sorry i am yet to see her as a true saviour of nigeria .
Granted she is certainly better then the other clueless ministers we have had who only skill is to chop money but she is not the one to carry nigeria out of the pile of crap we are sitting in.
In her term as minister Nigeria economy grow with a GDP of:
when I arrived in 2003, we had seven billion dollars in reserves. By the time I left, we had gone up to almost 30 billion dollars. And as we speak now, we have about 40 billion dollars in reserves due to proper management of our finances. And that shores up our economy, makes it stable.

Our exchange rate that used to fluctuate all the time is now fairly stable and being managed, so that business people have a predictability of prices in the economy. We brought inflation down from 28 percent to about 11 percent. And we had GDP grow from an average of 2.3 percent the previous decade to about 6.5 percent now. So all the changes and reforms we were able to make have shown up in results that are measurable in the economy.

She successful freed Nigeria from the strangulation of IMF and rebalanced our nations Balance of trade from a deficit to surplus. Why do we keep calling for her all the way in Washington, if our men are so capable.

She has served us well twice now as finance minister and next time will be President. The promotion is long overdue.

We have opportunities in agriculture, like I said. We have opportunities in solid minerals. We have a lot of minerals that no one has even invested in or explored. And we realized that without the proper legislation to make that possible, that wouldn't happen. So we've now got a mining code that is comparable with some of the best in the world. We have opportunities in housing and real estate. There was nothing in a country of 140 million people - no shopping malls as you know them here. This was an investment opportunity for someone that excited the imagination of people. And now, we have a situation in which the businesses in this mall are doing four times the turnover that they had projected.
