Romance › Re: Why Would A Decent Woman Give Up Her Child? by blissfullynaughty: 7:27am On Jan 08, 2009 |
Don_Ese125: O.k,my cousin(who's also a very good friend) came to my home to talk to me. She said social security had contacted her recently to find out whether she'd take full custody of her daughter. That was when i learnt the meaning of the expression slack-jawed. I mean she'd told me once that she'd given birth to a child before, but i thought the child was dead or sumn, because she's the kind of person that would be personally involved in her kid's life, and i had'nt heard anyting about a child before or anyting after. She told me that she'd given the child to its father 12 years back immediately it was born and hadnt seen her daughter in 12 years. She had pictures, but as far as i'm concerned, that don't mean shit,i mean how can u have a daughter and not see her for 12 years? She told me that her daughter's father was doing time for drug-dealing and since she was the closest living relative, social security had contacted her. Right now her daughter was in foster-care. I got the feeling that she'd already made her decision;she just needed som1 to talk to. I was right, she'd accepted custody and after all the paperwork has been filed, she'll go get her daughter and bring her home. Here's what i dnt get. I know my cousin. We've been close friends for like forever. She's a good person. Family means a lot to her,to both of us,and i can't for the life of me figure out why she'd give up her child. Can you? If she opened up to you about having a kid, why did you not ask her about her reasons for giving away the child? If you guys are as close as you have maintained, I am sure she will open up to you. Actually, if I was her and you had not asked me any questions after I dropped a shocker on you, I'd find that odd. |
TV/Movies › Re: SlumDog Millionaire vs. City Of God by blissfullynaughty: 3:15am On Jan 08, 2009 |
doyin13: I just watched Slumdog Millionaire and yes it was bloody awesome. You know, one of those films you wish, if you are involved in cinema that is, you wish you wrote.
Its also one of those films where the location is as much a character, a living breathing thing, as are the human actors themselves.
Mumbai, with its squalor on one hand and stupendous wealth on the other(google the Ambani's) comes alive in this film I think, in a way more than I can remember, any location does in any film.
Of course, I think this pits it against City of God, that other fantastic film set in Rio.
Anyways. . . .I have come up with my own personal ranking of such films.
At number 3. . . . .Toss up between Quiet American and A Mighty Heart. I would go for the former cause it is overall a better film and the cinematography as well as the vivid depiction of Saigon. A Mighty Heart was a bit of a drag, although Karachi as a character stands out in the film.
At number 2. . . . . City of God. I have always come back to this film a few times and wondered, perhaps the violence was a tad overdone. A self satisfying glorification in violence. The darkness appeals, but do the variations in favela life as the TV series ''City of Men'' so fantastically brought to the screen, really come out, is it done any justice by the almost mono dimensional aspect of the film.
At number 1. . . . .the current fave. Slumdog Millionaire.
AND FOR GOD'S SAKE, SOMEONE DO A FILM ABOUT LAGOS ALREADY. CAN'T THINK OF A BETTER ''CITY'' TO BE A CHARACTER IN A FILM Those of you who like the Slumdog fil so much should go and read the book it was based on called Q & A by Vikas Swarup (But with all these adoration, I hope you are not disappointed o). Personally I prefer the book, but maybe that is because I read it first. |
