Wrong. In 2001 the US had approx 12.000 warheads, and Russia had approx 13,000 warheads. But in 2003, the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty was signed calling for both the US and Russia, to bring the number of Nuclear warheads down to 2,200 each by 2012.

The US reached the goal of 2,200 in 2007, Russia reached the 2,200 mark last year 2012. Now this is, of course, what is told to use by the governments, though in reality they probably still have thousands more in which are not on the books.
