Here’s a clear, straight-to-the-point summary with key takeaways: Summary Electricity distribution companies (DisCos) and industry stakeholders are criticizing the government’s claim that electricity meters will be free for all customers. They say the promise is unrealistic, misleading, and already causing problems. According to them, meters are being supplied in limited batches and cannot meet nationwide demand. The statement has also damaged the existing Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme, where customers can legally buy meters and get refunded through energy credits over time. Stakeholders warn that the policy lacks planning, stakeholder consultation, and clarity on who will pay for the meters and installations, threatening sustainability and local meter suppliers. Key Points Government promise seen as unrealistic Meters are coming in batches, not enough for everyone. Public was misled into believing meters are available for all. MAP scheme is being damaged People are rejecting MAP because they believe meters are now “free.” MAP is still necessary because free meters cannot close the metering gap. Local meter suppliers risk collapse if MAP dies. Lack of clarity from government No clear explanation of: Who qualifies for free meters Which areas will get them Who will pay for supply and installation Cost recovery problem Meter installers must be paid — but by who? DisCos question whether: Government will subsidize it Operators will bear the cost Without cost recovery, the system becomes unsustainable. No stakeholder consultation Minister allegedly made the announcement without engaging DisCos or industry players. Growing public tension Customers are now fighting DisCos because they expect free meters. Confusion and anger are increasing due to misinformation. Bottom Line The policy sounds good politically, but economically and operationally, it’s weak. Without funding structure, clear implementation plans, and stakeholder coordination, the “free meters for all” promise risks: Killing the MAP scheme Crippling local meter businesses Creating public unrest Making the power sector more unstable |
Human rights lawyer Pelumi Olajengbesi clarified that soldiers on duty take orders only from their superiors within the military chain of command — the Chief of Defence Staff and the Service Chiefs — not from any minister. He explained that while the FCT Minister represents the President in civil matters, this authority does not extend to military operations. Olajengbesi condemned any attempt by ministers to issue orders to soldiers, calling such actions reckless, unlawful, and an abuse of office. He warned that ministers have no immunity from prosecution if they obstruct or intimidate military officers carrying out lawful duties. He urged the government to act decisively to prevent future civilian–military clashes, emphasizing that the Constitution clearly separates civil administration from military command. |

Good day Nairalanders I'm single and a graduate of Economics I have been off from office work since 2016 and I have been surviving from side hustle like my graphic design (but I'm not earning much from it but it is able to foot some of my bills) and maybe support from my brother's and palm plantation which I'm managing . On some week days I'm free and I feel like I need to do more . Which now lead me to go back to my old office where I learnt printing though I was going there to print jobs not as often but. I was offered a job to come supervise and also work as a graphic designer. But the pay is small but I think I can combine it with agriculture. But the problem is office opens at 8am and closes at 6 pm from Monday-Satuday. I don't know what to do I'm not a fan of an office work but I just need to increase my income by working extra jobs. I don't know if I am making the right decision or not. I have been having a sleepless night on this matter. Please I need someone who have pass this phase of life or has experience to give their own views. Should I avoid the office work and focus on daily pay? |
Here in 2024 |
