Nairaland / General / Re: What Is The Significance/reason(s) For Cross-over Night? by bobblue: 11:14pm On Dec 31, 2012
I personally think it is pointless. There is nothing significant about Dec 31/Jan 1 in the Gregorian calendar. It is not a significant date in God's calendar. It is ok to pray, it is ok to reflect but the dogmatism and fanaticism about that date is what irks me. For those who follow God's calendar there are certain dates to watch out for, those are the dates that really matter

Politics / Re: Nonso-Maduakor Wrongfully Charged For Cynthia's Murder by bobblue: 5:22pm On Aug 29, 2012
The rat poison scenario hits the nail on the head. That's exactly it! Anyone can get any drug from any pharmacy in Nigeria without prescription. The people who are saying the police is right have never tasted police brutality on innocence citizens. I have, and I know how ruthless the police can be. In a civilised society, you cannot just go and grab someone and throw him in jail when you cannot prove his guilt. Even know terrorists are hardly treated this way. The murderers have not identified him as the one who sold the drugs, so why should he be paraded on national tv in handcuffs with the murderers?

Yes I totally agree! I know Nonso is innocent, he just got caught in the web of things as a result of the ineptitude of the Nigerian police. Those of us that are friends of Nonso, what can we do to help? Does anyone know any influential person who might be able to talk for Nonso?

Believe me, it is a different world out there, there is a culture of trust that makes these progressive nations succeed and prosper, that is why they can fall for '419' because the idea of being deceived in the way the '419ers' do it, is totally foreign to their culture e.g you put up an advertisement to rent out a place, you start getting emails of '419ers' trying to con you. They don't get it. Why can't people of the same culture simply say what they mean and mean what they say and stick with it? I believe, more than anything, this is the very reason Nigeria is the way it is today. You cannot trust many Nigerians for even very simple business transactions. Cynthia seems to have believed in people and was never taught how to distrust (Nigerians), that was her waterloo...may God grant her eternal rest!

@tpia...I dont think in a linear fashion...the point I was trying to make was the issue of trust, nothing wrong with trusting people, it is just a matter of culture. I gave 3 examples of a trusting and honest (finish) culture and I ended with the fact that girls raised in the northern part of Nigeria seem to be very naive, that has been my experience and they have to be taught to distrust people...Cynthia was raised in the north and never got past her naivety...may God grant her eternal rest!

Yes I do not see anything wrong in trusting your fellow man/woman and we have many corrupt evil minds in Nigeria. If you traveled to a place like Finland, on arrival, if you were looking for where to stay, a young girl could direct and even host you for the night! You could do business with someone and collect the goods and the person would ask you to pay later, no problem. But I bet you many of Nigerians would already be abusing this kind of trust and making the people tighten up. A guy in Finland brushed someone's parked car, there was no scratch, no dent, there was nothing as far as the natural eye could see, the guy still left a note on the car, asking the owner to contact him if he had any concerns about his car!
That being said, some Nigerians being the way they are, everyone needs to be trained to distrust people which goes against the grain of simple-minded northern raised girls...

Nonso I strongly believe is not a part of the crime, it is unfortunate that Pharmacies in Nigeria do not have the culture of sticking to their guns about not selling controlled drugs without prescription, the guy is a qualified pharmacist and believe me, I was almost thrown in jail once for a simple traffic offence (many years ago, I was running a bus that was not registered as commercial with a friend, to survive), I think I was lucky to escape! I bet you the police just asked for who sold the drugs to the real criminals and proceeded to arrest them. In Nigeria, can you resist arrest even when the police (who have guns!) have no warrant? I'm sorry to say but we mostly practice jungle justice in Nigeria @coogar it is unfortunate that we do not have a 'sane clime' in Nigeria. I know how many times I have been brutalised by the police because I did not want to 'settle'.@ThiefOfHears, 'knowing their family' means alot to me and many others who know the guy. Nonso and his sister went to see my mum a few weeks ago when I lost my dad...demonic? No, just unfortunate, but I pray the real truth and justice prevails and the real criminals are made to face the wrath of the law.
I really feel for Cynthia, I do not believe she was 'a runs girl' but I believe she was extremely naive. I think I have noticed that about girls that grow up in the north. May God grant her eternal rest!

I am very well acquainted with Maduakor Chukwunonso(one of the pharmacists) and his family, we were next door neighbors for over 5yrs. I know his dad, mum and siblings. The Nonso I know would not be involved in this sort of gruesome murder, I guess his crime was selling the drug without prescription without the knowledge or intent to participate in the homicide
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Re: Harry Redknapp Claimed Kanu Was 49 Years Old In 2010 by bobblue: 12:34am On Apr 17, 2012
Yes Kanu is 38 years old. A former classmate in University who went to Holy Ghost College Owerri, is the same age as Kanu and actually played soccer with Kanu at school confirmed his age. So I don't know where this Harry Redknapp got his facts from, regardless, Kanu is a star anyday anytime
Travel / Help! My Sister And Her Husband Want To Remain As Illegal Immigrants In Uk by bobblue: 4:49pm On Feb 26, 2012
My Elder sister and her husband got a 6 month visiting visa to UK. It was their first time of traveling out of the country. I was very happy for them when the visa was issued. But to my surprise before they travelled, her husband resigned his job and moved all their stuff to the village. Now with both of them in the UK, they have refused to come back. I have spoken to my sister several times and my husband has spoken to her husband on the difficulties and dangers of living in the UK as an illegal immigrant.
My sister said her husband told her she can return to Nigeria if she so desires but he is adamant about remaining in the UK as an illegal immigrant. I have this feeling that her husband might be pressed by circumstances to marry someone else in order to secure legal status in UK.
Since my husband and myself have lived in the UK and currently live abroad together, I am concerned because I have seen people who have been stuck for many years abroad and are currently stuck with very limited options.
I do not want her to feel like I am against her traveling or living abroad, but I don't want her to live abroad with her husband as an illegal immigrant. Please I need your advice on what you think I can do or say to convince them to return to Nigeria before their 6 months visiting visa expires. Thank you for you thoughts and suggestions
Autos / Shipping Cars From Calgary, Alberta Canada To Lagos, Nigeria by bobblue: 10:20pm On Nov 13, 2011
Hi folks,
I was just wondering if any of you have or can recommend people who ship vehicles from Calgary Alberta Canada to Lagos Nigeria. I have dealt with a couple of guys (I am currently dealing with one) and it is, to say the least an absolute nightmare! The guys I have dealt with are just so terribly irresponsible and unprofessional in my judgement and leave me in the dark about what is going on aside from the 'normal' disregard for time or keeping appointments, calling or returning calls etc. I keep pursuing them to get the least amount of information about my shipment.

Is there someone or are there people (in Calgary) you know and can recommend? Thanks in advance for your help

Also if any of you have had good/bad/other experiences shipping vehicles to Nigeria, please kindly share some of these experiences if you will, thanks again!
