The New political party, All Progressive Congress (APC) has dominated the post- Election political landscape after unseating the largest political party in Africa the PDP. Following the 2015 national and provincial elections, the party holds 62% of National Assembly seats and governs more of the country’s 22 states (Independent National Electoral Commission, 2016).The President Muhammad Buhari's APC brought a promise of change which portrayed the poll as a political watershed for Nigeria's democracy in the wake of series of crises and corrupt practices, unimaginable state of affairs, anxiety generated by the Boko Haram insurgence in the North east, and the aftermath of Chibok girls abduction which have already manifested clearly on the nation . Nigerians were being led by a government that criminalized the entire system. The style of democracy being practiced by the PDP was being sustained on unconstitutionality, anarchy and day light embezzlement of the public funds against the express wordings which have seen a significant increase in the size of Nigerian people yearning for change, but the attitudinal consequences of indicators of these yearnings began , as of 2011, when Nigerians regardless of the class, ethnicity, diversity voted for "transformation Change" more likely believed in democratic values, the desire to make a legacy issue from a president that came from the minority of the country, when there was still a fundamental issue of freedom and democracy at stake after the death of former president Yaradua. Many had hoped the Jonathan administration would address national priority areas such as controlling prices, creating jobs, improving health care, and fighting corruption. Neither did we know that Jonathan’s government would seem to be the most corrupt regime since Nigeria’s independence. The vaulting ambition of those who occupied his government and of cause Mr President himself trying to retain Presidential powers in 2015 even against popular wish tends to invite blur and chaos on the democracy we claim to aspire. It is clear that ninety-nine percent of the wealthy Nigerian politicians today made their money directly or indirectly from the government coffers either through the inflation of contracts sum, embezzlement of public funds and corruption of all sort. The era of abusive military rule and the return to democratic government in May 29th 1999, gave our great country hope that Nigeria is on the path to greatness. When democracy came to stay on May 29th 1999, Nigerians were relieved that they were ready to reap bounteously the dividends of democracy but it is now clear that after about sixteen years of civil government piloted by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), they only left an institutional platform in the history of Nigeria led by a government that has criminalized the entire system. Different leaders have come with their own agenda: Olusegun Obasanjo's regime: May 29th 1999- May 29th 2007, Yaradua's regime: “Seven Point Agenda" May 29th 2007- May 5th 2010. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan's regime Transformation Agenda) May 29th 2011- May 29th 2015.Yet it is not the vision of PDP leaders for Nigeria to be a nation devoured of monumental corruption. The PDP government may claim that it has in a way performed well to some great extent but then the magnitude of the problems facing Nigeria today such as insecurity, corruption and many more have swallowed what they claimed to be positive achievements of the government. Former President of America, John Kennedy talked about democracy. He insisted that democracy is never a final achievement, it is a call to untiring efforts of continual sacrifices and to the willingness if necessary to die on the defensive. It is too beautiful beneath the sea, but if we stay too long we will drown, we have had great opportunities in 16 years of democratic rule. What achievement does the country boast of, when the name of our dear country is intermittently paraded like a LovePeddler through corruption on the international scene. What is being done to protect the image of Nigeria, rather Nigerians have been expected to celebrate such people who kept them in economic darkness? I believe we all fail sometimes, as a country, we have, with 3 different experienced presidents who were supposed to be the protectors of our nation but failed woefully and have no excuse. If we can’t protect the image of our country, what good is it to us as a nation? Then came the Change Mantra Nigerians clamoured for, to vote credibility and not party. Votes, only for credible and competent candidates able to address the fundamental issues on ground. This is not the time to tolerate political slogans, political posters, political money bags but real contenders and not pretenders, adding that Credibility is the quest for socio political and economic emancipation. Majority of citizens say the APC is better able than the opposition to address national priority areas such as tackling Insecurity, creating jobs, improving health care, and fighting corruption. 365 days have gone and the Harbinger Change of president Buhari's government seems to confront a mammoth task and a legitimacy test after the electoral victory last year through free and fair election because of complete voters roll. Most Nigerians are confident that the President has the commitment, patriotism, speed, and integrity to tackle corruption by establishing productive anti-graft commissions and agencies, tackling insecurity, intimidation or violence, reviving the dilapidated economy, and restoring uninterrupted power supply in the country with the billions of naira wasted over the years thereby fluctuating commercial boom as power is the life wire of the nation’s economic growth. But some Nigerians have become more sceptical about whether this government can provide the change it has proffered in which the All Progressives Congress (APC), rolled out a roadmap for a welfare state. Although the party was not categorical on its ideological leaning, many felt that it is what is left of the centre party now genuinely committed to leadership renewal and service delivery. APC’s manifesto portrayed it as a credible alternative platform to voters who opted for regime change on poll that Nigerians are able to remove non-performing leaders from power. When the APC unveiled its plans for the nation, it attempted to provide answers to some puzzles. The 10-point road map, according to the party, was meant to herald a welfare state. The highlights of the manifesto include job creation, free and qualitative education, better housing plan, improved funding for agriculture, security. Others are social security for the poor, technologically driven industrial estates, allowance for ex- corpers and war against corruption. However, between May and now, there have been obvious gaps between expectation and reality, despite the promise of fundamental changes to socio-economic structures and articulate measures to halt the national drift. Although President Buhari has taken bold steps to restore public confidence in government, critics have pointed out that he has been moving at a snail-speed. Nigerians wait on Buhari's administration to deliver the dividends of change and democracy to the common man, the administration should urgently focus on the critical sectors for surgical operation. To this end, President Buhari’s Change scorecard in the last 1 year has been the declaration of his assets. He also facilitated bailouts for distressed states to halt the cash crunch. This, according to experts, has offered a temporary relief to the 27 states on the verge of liquidation. The President has also moved swiftly to block financial loopholes by insisting on a Treasury Single Account and Obedience to the rule of law through the use of courts and independence of the judiciary. The anti-corruption mantra is also achieving results. Government is on the trail of looted funds. The Commander-In-Chief has also successfully crossed the bridge from dictatorship to democratic constitutionalism. Buhari has given a marching order to the Armed Forces to crush Boko Haram insurgency and so far, the military have been relentless in their efforts. The appointment of credible Nigerians as ministers has also elicited commendation. On the shoulder of the new team rests the arduous task of assisting the President and the nation to realise the vision for change. Nigeria still has a long way to go due to economic sabotage, insecurity and violence being perpetrated by Fulani herdsmen and the Niger Delta bombings of pipeline. The economy has gone into recess, fuel scarcity still looms despite removal of subsidy, the issue of diversifying our economy still stands, unemployment is still on the rise and one cannot but wonder if citizens who trust their government are even willing to listen and render support to government policies aimed at improving the country. Arise, O compatriots, Nigeria's call obey To serve our fatherland, with love and strength and faith. To my countrymen, women, and youths, we have fought against all odds to get here, no doubt many of us gravel for change. Let's believe we have a role to play in this era of change like we had done in the last Election when we had no names, and no family but we wanted change, many of us were poor and powerless and yet together, we overthrew 16 years of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) hegemony, that left the sleeping giant of Africa at crossroads with the fragile edifice about to crumble. This past one year has shown us why our foundation was brought together as a country, to remind us to be loyal to our nation, to come together and wish our nation greatness. So much blood has been spilled for all to stand divided by our politicians, and they will spill more blood to hold on to power, but we must resist all attempt and put our dear nation first. Oh God of creation, direct our noble cause Guide our leaders right. To his excellency ,the commander in chief, we hope you serve with heart and might to make our nation bound in freedom, peace and Unity. We believe in Change and we are asking the president to hold strongly his change belief too. A true leader avails himself of the wisest council he can and no one is wiser than the foundation he laid for himself. We implore your anti-corruption war to have effect not just on the opposition but also to manifest in the APC and your entire government. The change has begun to manifest itself positively and negatively, Nigeria’s reputation is now gaining effect with the defeat of Boko Haram and the mindset of the president to tackle corruption. looking back at the previous government's administration with their policy on anti corruption and prosecution of high profile cases, one would believe the present administration as to do alot to win the confidence of Nigerians as a way of proving the "change begins with me' slogan of the president. Since the advent of Nigeria's democratic government in Nigeria's fourth republic, Nigerians have had been clamouring for good government to Reed the country of corruption which has caused endemic damage to the image of our dear country. The failure of past administration is now reflecting in the change the people voted, with the level of corruption allegations in the Apc's administration.I believe the level of witch-hunt on the opposition raises alot of concern, are we saying those in the apc are all saints. Prominent apc members have been charged with fraud and corruption cases yet we still await a prompt action from the security agency or they are still under control of some powerful cabals who holds Nigeria to ransom. The level of political corruption shows that the mistake of the past now manifest in the change Nigerians wanted.lets take the National Assembly as a case study to show that Nigerian's are in for the worst case of corruption in Nigeria's history. the only saving grace of the masses is now being poluted with different injuctions of judges on corruption cases,as well in conclusion of election matters shows that the integrity of our judicial system is under duress. I believe in the president's word that Nigeria is big for all of us to stay, but the issue of unemployment, insecurity in the Niger delta region, scarcity of basic essential needs for Nigerians, high profile corruption cases, impunity and massacre of both the military and the rampage of the Fulani herdsmen are factors which the change promised by the present administration are taking its effect. yet I have seen good Nigerians making our great nation proud, seen young hardworking men and women working hard to earn a honest living. On the economy,it seems the change Nigerians wished is now questionable and under scrutiny ,are we sure we are going the right way as a country or we are changing to the other direction? Let's all come together to think as a country if we are making positive change or negative change. I pray for a new nation free of Ethnic bias and bigotry,i believe in my country and I know it will change one day regardless of the bad and corrupt politicians. I implore the commander in chief of Armed Forces of Nigeria, his excellency president to carry out a dynamism of change he believed can work or he should not count my vote for him come 2019,any one's opinion can be viewed. Now that the Harbinger Change has come to stay, we are to be just and good, only then can we accept this change, all of us, even our leaders. There is so much good in all of us, the best we can do is to help each other bring it out. The country is battling with poverty, misery, decayed infrastructure, soaring unemployment, power outage and large scale corruption. The atmosphere of insecurity is not investment-driven. The protracted energy crisis has led to a high cost of production and crippled the manufacturing sector, let's all stand as one and trust in the President. Nigeria shall be great. God bless the federal Republic of Nigeria.Happy Independence Day #Change begins with me!!! |

The former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has presented a comprehensive reports on five key sectors of economy, security, power, education and infrastructure to the incoming president-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari for consideration. The vice chairman of the committee, former Minister of Finance, Dr. Kalu Idika Kalu, presented volumes of the report to General Buhari at a brief closed door meeting on Thursday at his campaign support group’s office at Lobito Crescent in Abuja. Chairman of the governing board, Centre for Human Security of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Professor Akin Mabogunje, told Journalists in an interview that the committee “is being working on a number of critical issues for the development of this country and they have now sent a delegation of those who’ve been involve with the preparation of those policy documents to talk to the president-elect and get him to appreciate what is being done to help his administration. “We have looked at education, security, economy, power and Infrastructure. Those are the areas we have made recommendations and which we hope the new administration will be able to work on.” He explained further that the president-elect was very happy that they have been thinking about how to help him hit the ground running. When contacted for clarification, director of APC presidential campaign team, Garba Shehu, said “The whole idea was that Obasanjo set up his own think- tank with the aim of carrying out a study on challenges facing the country in five key areas of Education, Power sector, Economy, Security and Infrastructure. The study was commissioned four months ago so that the outcome will be made available to the incoming administration after the election. He also revealed that Dr. Christopher Kolade who heads the power committee, gave various stages of the proposed power sector development plan to include, short term, medium term, long term solutions. Under the short term solution, the plan seeks to raise country’s power generation to 10,000 MW within a very short period of time. Shehu added that President-elect expressed gratitude to Obasanjo and his team, describing their intervention as a great impetus for the incoming government. “Buhari regretted that the out-going government that is supposed to give him tips on how to take-off has done nothing so far. He thanked the Obasanjo committees for their gesture, assuring them that his incoming administration will be needing their advice as time goes on.” - See more at: http://247nigerianewsupdate.co/ahead-of-transition-obasanjo-hands-over-probe-reports-on-power-security-others-to-buhari/#sthash.w3LknLpP.dpuf |
We need to hold our elected political officers responsible if we want development in this country.. |
THE moral decadence of Nigeria’s political class is playing out in the ongoing mass defections from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party to the victorious opposition All Progressives Congress. No sooner had Muhammadu Buhari of the APC triumphed over President Goodluck Jonathan than the floodgates opened for prominent PDP stalwarts looking perpetually to the spoils of office to jump ship. Buhari and the APC now have a historic mission to break with the prevailing predatory system that has foisted parasitic political elite on the country. Perhaps unwittingly, the APC’s campaign slogan of “change” has ignited high hopes in many Nigerians that its presidential flagbearer, Buhari, who has, in over four decades in the public glare, built a reputation for honesty and discipline will lead a paradigm shift for accountability in public office. The mass migration of the flotsam and jetsam of the tainted political class to his corner presents the first challenge for the President-elect and his party to stamp their identity as change agents. There should be no safe haven for thieves in the in-coming government. Unlike what has prevailed in the past few years when a section of the federal cabinet and presidential entourage sometimes looked like a rogues’ gallery, Buhari should clean up our public service by scrupulously keeping tainted politicians and businessmen away from public office and his inner circle. We have had 16 unbroken years of democratic governance and reject the self-defeatist, self-serving mantra of undergoing a “learning process.” Much smaller African countries like Ghana, Rwanda and Botswana have left us behind in democratic protocol. Some South-Eastern countries like South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan quickly adapted to democracy after years of authoritarian military dictatorship. The task will not be easy. Some of the personalities quickly switching sides have ongoing cases of corruption in the courts; others have terrible track records in public office, while others are battling damaging accusations of looting that have not been properly investigated due to the prevailing reign of impunity. Yet others are unashamedly fair weather birds hoping the new government will continue the culture of patronage and impunity. Among the defectors are former state governors, ex-ministers, legislators and the large tribe of rent-seekers and influence-peddlers referred to derisively as “Any Government in Power,” who stalk the corridors of power for influence and appointments. Many want protection from prosecution for their past misdeeds. Buhari should not bend his stated resolve to keep defectors and looters at bay. He should go further and bring all treasury looters to justice. These include private businessmen and women, local and foreign, civil servants and former and current public office holders who, with their collaborators, have made Nigeria one of the world’s most corrupt countries, ranking 136 out of 175 countries in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index 2014. A new estimate by the Business Council for Africa surmises that up to $1 trillion has been stolen from the public from 1960 to 2005, higher than the $400 billion estimated by the World Bank to have been stolen between 1960 and 1999. The clean-up will have to start from the President-elect’s party, which was born as an amalgam of opposition parties and defectors – led by five state governors – from the ruling PDP. A significant number among its leadership are also tainted by graft accusations, including un-concluded cases against them by the anti-graft agencies. Buhari should keep them and their nominees out of his cabinet. The rule should apply to private persons. Breaking from the culture of impunity will put Buhari’s personal integrity to the maximum test. Among his predecessor’s many indiscretions was his unashamed public hobnobbing with persons accused of one misdeed or the other. When, for instance, news of the N2.53 trillion petrol subsidy scandal broke in 2012, Jonathan saw nothing wrong in being seen in rapturous camaraderie with some businessmen whose companies were proved by a parliamentary probe to have defrauded the country. Public morality demands that a leader with honour should keep controversial persons at bay. But many tainted persons regularly featured on Jonathan’s official entourage at home and on foreign trips. While the law says everyone is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court, we insist that Nigeria should align with global best practices and allow the due process of the law to establish an individual’s innocence before he or she is given public office. A mere allegation that she hired an illegal immigrant as a nanny was enough to deny Zoe Baird the post of the United States Attorney-General under President Bill Clinton in 1993. Once regarded as shoo-in for the French presidency, Dominque Strauss-Khan’s political career crashed after he was accused of sexually assaulting a hotel maid in New York, US in 2011. German Defence Minister, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, was forced to resign after he was accused of plagiarising his doctoral thesis. In Ghana, Victoria Hammah was sacked as deputy minister for communications for merely voicing her ambition to make a “million dollars in politics.” In Nigeria, despite facing prosecution for corruption, James Ibori, a former governor of Delta State, became a kingmaker under President Umaru Yar’Adua but was eventually jailed in the United Kingdom. The APC, as a ruling party, should also break with the sordid past and clean up its own house. Its leaders, “godfathers” and state governors should stop pushing misfits, looters and dubious persons for public office. Service, not patronage or the notorious “spoils system,” should henceforth be the overriding motive for seeking public office and politics. Buhari’s election is supposed to sweep aside the old order and form a government fit for the change Nigeria needs. If Buhari fails to distance himself from looters, hustlers and parasites, his government will be a non-starter and his failure will be remembered when he and his party return for votes in four years’ time. Nigerians are watching - See more at: http://247nigerianewsupdate.co/buhari-no-safe-haven-for-looters-please/#sthash.p2BUBuHU.dpuf |

The one picture you would hate to see in your dreams is that of the very opponent of the team you are supporting, clutching a massive trophy and jubilating all over the place! Not just once had one experienced a ‘nightmarish’ dream of this nature and not just once had ‘Joseph the Octopus’ proved to be revealing exactly what was about to happen. Of course, it should not be interpreted as if one does not want Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to be the next president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria but what the hell was he doing in my dream smiling so broadly as he acknowledged shouts of ‘congratulations’ from a horde of adoring supporters? The man can hardly manage a smile in real life and neither is he the candidate one would ordinarily be rooting for. However, a warning would seem to have come from the unknown: ‘Do not bet your house against Buhari becoming (the next) president unless you are equally prepared to be homeless!” The above extracts are from an article I wrote (title retained) in the run-up to the 2011 presidential election, having dreamt that Maj. Gen Muhammadu Buhari won the election. Of course, he did not but, who knows, it could have been a distant event that one had foreseen! In trying to rationalise the circumstances that could have made it a dream-come-true for Buhari, I examined the controversy that surrounded the candidacy of President Goodluck Jonathan over the zoning philosophy of his party, the Peoples Democratic Party. That controversy, more or less, pitted the northern leadership against him. I also examined the possibility that the then so-called progressive parties might actually co-operate among themselves in order to counterbalance the influence and power of the PDP. An attempt made in that direction did not succeed. Quite a lot has changed since 2011 and the aforementioned factors, more than ever before, will have implications for the direction of the Presidency come February 14. Firstly, the once splinter progressive parties have coalesced into the All Progressives Congress, thanks to the centralising influence of the institution of the Presidency. The February presidential election will be fought in what is a two-party competition between the PDP and the APC. Buhari could be the beneficiary of this new development, as he now competes for the Presidency under the platform of a political party which, unlike his defunct Congress for Political Change, enjoys nationwide support. Secondly, the February elections will reveal the extent to which the intra-party crisis in the PDP – a crisis which led to the defection of five of its governors to the rival APC – has resulted into the loss or gain of popular support in the various constituencies. I have attempted to explain the causes of the crisis in the PDP by three factors: “One, a frosty relationship between President Goodluck Jonathan and Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State; two, an allegation of arbitrariness on the part of the immediate past PDP national chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur; and three, the perceived ambition of President Jonathan to seek re-election in 2015 in contradiction of a supposed agreement that he would not be doing so.” (see my book, Party Coalitions in Nigeria (2014), pp. 129-130). Cleavage, be it of ethnicity or religion, is the worst of political problems. You hardly can resolve the problem of cleavage by preaching to people to forget about those things they hold very dear to their hearts. There are not a few in the North who feel the South had dominated the Presidency for the greater part of the current Republic; they will grab the opportunity provided by the candidacy of Muhammadu Buhari in ensuring that the pendulum of political power swings back to their region. Finally, Buhari faces an incumbent President, Goodluck Jonathan, who may be having problems with economic and security issues. Allegations of escalating official corruption and Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East may have overshadowed the modest achievements of Jonathan. Of course, diverse sentiments will compete and contend in the 2015 election, but there are not a few who would want to reward or punish him on their perception of his stewardship during the past four years. Buhari, himself a former leader, has his own “baggages” but he enjoys the perception of being one disciplined individual who passionately resents corruption. Corruption has been that most deadly virus afflicting the Nigerian state. There is hardly any doubt that the days ahead will be quite interesting. What we must continue to do is to educate our people about the ramifications of democracy as a game where the minority must have its say while the majority has its way. Why, for instance, would you want to throw the nation into chaos just because someone has lost an election, even when another member of your ethnic or religious constituency could be a beneficiary in the near future? Why would you want the stigma of “intolerant democrats” stamped permanently on you and your people? Our nation must unite behind whoever wins the February presidential election. The Governor of Kaduna state, Ramalan Yero, has threatened to call out his supporters to inflict damage on the opposition All Progressives Congress [APC] if his team is ever attacked while campaigning. Speaking in Hausa language to his supporters at the opening of his campaign on Monday, Mr. Yero vowed swift “revenge” if ever attacked by any one “born of woman”. “If you are born of a woman, please pelt us with stones, when we go out for campaigns. We dare you to destroy or burn our vehicles. Burn our House,” the governor said. “I swear by Allah, anyone who does any of these things, we will revenge.” The remarks came as an escalation of an already tense electioneering ahead of February polls, seen in Kaduna State as a contest mainly between the governor and a former Minister, Nasir El Rufai, of the APC. In the last two weeks, there have been incidents of political violence in Rivers, Plateau and Gombe States, where supporters of different political parties launched gun attacks on opponents, bombed party offices and torched campaign vehicles. Mr. Yero spoke days after all presidential candidates for the February elections committed to non-violence before, during and after the polls. Addressing his supporters, a furious Mr. Yero threatened to stop Mr. El-Rufai from entering Kaduna State henceforth. PREMIUM TIMES obtained an audio recording of the governor apparently addressing his supporters and threatening violence against Mr. El-Rufai. He said as governor, he has the power to stop the former minister from even leaving his house. “If I say you should not come to Kaduna, I swear you cannot come. If I say you should not leave your house, I swear you cannot leave,” Mr. Yero said. Despite being the home state of Vice President Namadi Sambo, Kaduna, the former capital of the northern part of Nigeria, also has a strong APC base, giving Mr. El Rufai wide support too. As Minister of the FCT, Mr. El-Rufai’s administration demolished several homes and other structures the government said were illegal or built in contravention of Abuja’s master plan. In his address, Mr. Yero said he also has the power to demolish the former Minister’s house if he wishes to. “If I say they should demolish your House, I swear by Allah, they would demolish it immediately,” he said. “If you think we cannot do it, try us and see, continue with what you are doing, by God’s grace we will show you,” Mr. Yero said. Mr. Yero also threatened to deal with APC supporters if they dare attack the campaign trail of the PDP. - See more at: http://247nigerianewsupdate.co/kaduna-governor-yero-caught-on-tape-threatening-violence-against-apc-el-rufai/#sthash.pDkaV14k.dpuf |

Nigerians have severely criticised the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, for comparing President Goodluck Jonathan with Jesus Christ. Speaking during a live breakfast show on Channels Television on Monday, the presidential aide said Jonathan had borne the nation’s problems and woes on his shoulders in the same way that Jesus Christ had always carried the burden of Christians all over the world. Gesticulating widely during the programme, Okupe stated that, with regard to the Nigerian situation, Jonathan could best be likened to Jesus Christ. Noting that Nigerians had failed to understand the troubles the President had gone through for the sake of “everybody” in the country, he said, “There are political issues. People do not understand the burden this particular President is bearing. He is like Jesus Christ. He (Jonathan) is bearing the burden of everybody.” In view of Jonathan’s “untold burden” for the nation, Okupe said, it would be impossible for his principal to lose re-election in 2015. The presidential aide boasted that though certain politicians had been allegedly sabotaging the Federal Government’s reforms, especially in the power sector, victory was still certain for his principal. “Today, the Nigerian Army is in total and perfect control of the North East. I can’t see Jonathan losing this (2015) election. It’s not possible,” he added. Reacting to his comments, many Nigerians lambasted Okupe for comparing Jonathan to Jesus Christ and asked him to withdraw the statement. Online activists who took a swipe at Okupe urged Jonathan to publicly reject the title of “Nigeria’s Jesus Christ” which they said Okupe erroneously bestowed on him. An angry online activist, Tayo Moore, accused Okupe of insulting Jesus Christ by comparing Him with his boss. Noting that the development was sacrilegious, Moore advised Okupe not to hold the belief that he could “insult” Jesus Christ and go scot free. “Okupe has just confirmed that he doesn’t know or have Christ. It is only a matter of time before he (Okupe) begins to compare Prophet Mohammed and Jonathan in the same breath. “That will be his final undoing. I am wondering what the Christian Association of Nigeria has to say on Okupe’s sacrilege, given its current ‘leadership’ or should I say lack thereof?” Moore argued via his Twitter handle. A Kano-based respondent, Nazir Galadanchi, cautioned the medical doctor-turned politician against uttering what he described as a blasphemous statement. Galandanchi argued that Okupe’s latest analogy was not surprising as he had recently compared his boss with the late anti-Apartheid leader, Nelson Mandela, with a view to selling the President’s candidature to Nigerians. “That’s blasphemy. Okupe should please seek for forgiveness,” he added in a message on Twitter. Political blogger, Japheth Omojuwa, described Okupe’s latest comparison as the height of “desperation” of the Jonathan-led Presidency. “Doyin Okupe just called Goodluck Jonathan Nigeria’s Jesus Christ. We have finally reached the peak of their desperation. How can you trust a bad marketer to sell a bad product? Okupe trying to sell Jonathan is the journey of a blind man leading another,” he tweeted. Social commentator, Temitope Atiba, stated that it amounted to an oddity for Okupe to preoccupy himself with drawing semblances between the President and the central figure of Christianity. “You can see the stark irony of life when Doyin Okupe begins to compare Goodluck Jonathan to our Lord Jesus Christ. Then again Goodluck Jonathan and Jesus Christ have little else in common apart from flesh and blood,” Atiba argued. Describing Okupe’s comparison as strange, another respondent, Aisha Yesufu, said it was the “height of madness.” “Is nothing sacred to these people? Is there nothing that one does not dabble in with these people? This is the height of madness,” she added. She also cautioned Okupe against blaming Jonathan’s failures on activities of saboteurs, stating that “excuses are meant for weaklings.” “There is not bad weather only bad clothing. Excuses are for weaklings. A government easily sabotaged should give way. We are sick of the excuses. They (excuses) are way out for weak leaders and sign of incapacity. “All it (the Presidency) does is to complain. This government blames all but itself. As long as this govt blames others the solution can never be with it but with those it blames. “Since this government cannot fight all those sabotaging it, then why is it a government? Probably, the saboteurs will keep sabotaging him (Jonathan) and we will keep paying for it,” she said. - See more at: http://247nigerianewsupdate.co/outrage-as-okupe-compares-jonathan-with-jesus-christ/#sthash.hFsLxJZi.dpuf |
There were shocking revelations at the weekend that an Army Colonel, some junior officers and soldiers who were taking part in the military offensive to reclaim communities taken over by the Boko Haram terrorists in Adamawa State, have been arrested for sabotage.Top military sources said that the colonel (a Muslim) who was Commanding a team of three Armoured Personnel Carriers, APC’s, with the capability to fire up to a range of 1.5kilometres or even more, had instead of pursuing the terrorists, deliberately set the APCs on fire between Gulak and Madagali, before running away with his team of soldiers into the bush.Saturday Vanguard gathered that the Army authorities were outraged over the development and ordered the arrest of both the commander, the junior officers as well as the soldiers under his command.Narrating how the ‘’embarrassing incident occurred,’’ a source who was privy to the development noted that until the latest development, the Special Forces of the Nigerian Army who commenced the putsch to rout Boko Haram terrorists from Bazza, Michika, Gulak and Madagali from Vimtim, had successfully dealt with, and inflicted heavy casualties on the terrorists up till Gulak. It was said that between Gulak and Madagali, the Colonel who had all along been prided with air surveillance reports, was again informed that Boko Haram terrorists were approaching his team in six Toyota Hilux Pick Up vans from the Madagali axis.“However, rather than blasting and taking out the terrorists in their pick-up vans; he ordered his soldiers to jump out of the APC’s and set the armoured tanks on fire, without realising that he was being monitored. This was shocking because the terrorists were armed with weaponry which were grossly inferior to the firepower of the Nigerian Army Amoured tanks. After accomplishing the sabotage act, the Colonel and the junior officers and soldiers ran away into the bush, claiming that they were overpowered by a better armed group of Boko Haram terrorists,’’ Saturday Vanguard was told.Military sources said that the action of the Colonel and soldiers under his command had given vent to the disclosure by the top hierarchy of the military that there were so many fifth columnists in the military working against the country’s determination to flush out Boko Haram terrorists in the land.Consequently, Saturday Vanguard was told that a Board of Inquiry, BoI, had been set up by the Army authorities to investigate the Colonel and his soldiers after which a Military Court Martial would be set up to try them for conspiracy, treason and willful sabotage among others. Also speaking on the development, a senior officer confided in Saturday Vanguard thus, “You can now see why the Military Court Martial which is currently sitting is inevitable. The uninformed would feel that soldiers who are fighting the nation’s battle are being unjustly punished. But the truth is that many of them are sabotaging Nigeria and making the insurgents look formidable for reasons that cannot be explained. Some of them appear sympathetic to the insurgents.“How can it be explained that several APCs that cost up to $1million each in some cases or more will be willfully destroyed by Commissioned Officers, COs, who swore to defend the territorial integrity of their nation, just to help terrorists? That is treason of the highest order.”The source added that the new vigour and determination with which Nigerian troops had been prosecuting the war, resulting in the killing of several commanders of the sect as well as hundreds of the insurgents, was the fallout of the new position of the military high command to deal with those pursuing a different agenda from that of the Federal Government. The Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh said last week that the death penalty imposed on the 12 soldiers who were tried for treason was lawful and in accordance with military dictates. He spoke at a three-day conference organised by the National Security Adviser in collaboration with Trim Communication Nigeria Ltd on Media/Security relationship in crisis management.According to him, “The day you join the military you have signed off, whether life or death, and it is obey before complaint. How can a soldier just jump out of the APC because you want to donate APC to Boko Haram; and somebody is there talking about constructive mutiny.“The laws are there, if you run away from the enemy, you will die and that is what the military law says. Apart from the old Nigerian law, we abide by the military law. Nobody forces or conscripts anybody into the military. It is a voluntary service, and so if we have this type of challenge, you should be able to confront it and not to run away.” |

An intense cold war appears to be brewing in the northwest zone of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State vehemently voiced opposition to the spate of endorsements of President Goodluck Jonathan’s reelection bid, describing the campaign as a ruse. Mr. Lamido has ambitions to become the president, and is reportedly backed by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. The political feud in the zone rose to a new level today as Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aminu Bashir Wali, rebuked Mr. Lamido in a statement, describing the governor’s recent criticism of the president as unfortunate. Mr. Wali, who is one the anchormen for Mr. Jonathan’s reelection, added that the zone’s support for Mr. Jonathan was irreversible. An aide of Governor Lamido in Abuja told SaharaReporters that the governor had received Mr. Wali’s statement. The aide, who promised that the governor would soon release a formal response, described Mr. Wali’s statement as a “hatchet job.” He added that Mr. Wali was not an official of the party at the zonal level, wondering why the minister “did not allow the chairman [of the PDP], Ambassador Ibrahim Kazaure, to respond to the governor.” He said Mr. Lamido would issue a statement after studying Mr. Wali’s stern statement.Mr. Wali’s statement, obtained by our correspondent, read in part: “Our attention has been drawn to a publication widely circulated in the media purported to have emanated from the Jigawa State Governor challenging the resolution of our expanded stakeholders meeting wherein he claimed that Jigawa State was not part of the resolution.“It is against this backdrop that we deemed it necessary to clear the air on this and other sundry issues raised by the Deputy Governor in his press briefing at his office in Dutse, the capital of Jigawa State. Let me firmly and explicitly state that the decision to hold the expanded stakeholders meeting was a culmination of several meetings held amongst the key stakeholders of the zone and Jigawa State was always represented by the deputy governor in such meetings. It was also agreed at such fora that each state must first hold its stakeholders meeting before the expanded meeting, which we believe was complied with by each state chapter of the party.“The outcome of the meetings by the state chapters gave rise to the North-West Zone meeting. The expanded stakeholders resolved to urge President Goodluck Jonathan to contest for the Office of the President come 2015. This decision was the position of the majority of the stakeholders present at the meeting. Therefore to concretize it, Ambassador Aminu Wali was directed to read the communiqué and make it public as prepared and submitted by the Party. This accounted for the presence of the Governors and Deputy Governors including that of Jigawa State standing behind Ambassador Aminu Wali while he was reading the communiqué, to demonstrate their support and endorsement of the outcome of the meeting. I “Therefore, for the Deputy Governor to return to Jigawa State and to summon a press conference dissociating himself and the Jigawa State Governor from the communiqué is an afterthought and rather very unfortunate. We have no atom of idea as to the reason for such denial. We therefore find it necessary to put the record straight by confirming that we stand by the contents and outcome of our communiqué.”- See more at: http://247nigerianewsupdate.co/cold-war-in-pdp-as-wali-blasts-lamido-over-2015-presidential-ambition/#sthash.mdHxZGiG.dpuf |
ABUJA (AFP) – Nigeria’s military on Friday said that increasing Boko Haram attacks were a challenge to the country’s sovereignty but rejected claims it was in denial about the seriousness of the threat.“It is not only the pride and reputation of the military that is at stake but that of the entire nation,” said defence spokesman Chris Olukolade, calling for support for the armed forces.“All steps are being taken to ensure the success of the counter-insurgency operations, especially at this crucial time when our sovereignty is being challenged,” he added.Olukolade’s comments come a day after the United States said it was concerned by the upsurge in violence and the Islamists’ recent territorial gains in Nigeria’s far northeast. The deteriorating security situation threatened Nigeria’s future and was a “sober reality check”, US Assistant Secretary of State Linda Thomas-Greenfield said. She added: “The reputation of Nigeria’s military is at stake… We are past time for denial and pride.”Analysts also warned this week that the government was on the brink of losing control in the northeast, after Boko Haram reportedly seized Bama, near the Borno state capital, Maiduguri.Nigeria’s military high command have repeatedly denied that the insurgents have taken over towns and that hundreds of soldiers deserted their posts. It has also dismissed as “empty” claims from Boko Haram’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, that the captured town of Gwoza, also in Borno, was now part of an Islamic caliphate. In recent months there have been numerous reports that soldiers have refused to deploy to counter-attack Boko Haram. Troops have complained in particular that the insurgents are better armed.Olukolade said military top brass were aware of the concern at home and abroad over the situation but added: “Everything will be done to reverse the situation and defeat the rampaging terrorists.”The military was “more than ever determined and committed to the defence of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nigeria” and was “willing and ready to perform its duties with utmost diligence”, he said. |
Finally, the truth is out!Being text of a Press Conference addressed by the National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.Good afternoon Gentlemen of the press, and thank you for honouring my invitation to this press conference. Before I address you today, kindly permit me to replay the full interview of Dr. Stephen Davis, the Australian negotiator who was appointed by President Goodluck Jonathan to help secure the release of the over 200 girls who were abducted by Boko Haram on April 15th.The interview was aired on Arise Television on Thursday Aug. 28th.Thank you for your patience, gentlemen. The All Progressives Congress (APC) like many well-meaning Nigerians had resolved long ago that the issue of the Boko Haram insurgency should not be politicized. In view of this, the APC expressed its willingness and readiness to cooperate with the Federal Government in neutralizing the insurgency. Regrettably however, instead of accepting this offer of cooperation, the PDP-Federal Government has consistently pointed accusing fingers at our Party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the sponsor of Boko Haram. They have called us all sorts of derogatory names, but failed to provide any shred of evidence to support their claim. It has been very clear to us that the vehemence and persistence of this accusation, the deliberate distortion of statements made by our leaders to paint us as Boko Haram sponsors and the way the PDP-led Federal Government has gone to hire foreign PR firms, at a huge cost to taxpayers, as well as foreign and local hack writers to push this narrative, they were struggling hard to cover up something. We waited patiently knowing that the truth will one day surface. In a rare moment of truth, a top official of the Jonathan Administration, no less a personality than the former National Security Adviser (NSA), Gen. Andrew Owoye Azazi, situated the Boko Haram problem within the PDP. Shortly thereafter he was fired, and he later died in controversial circumstances. Still we waited. They distorted and misrepresented the statements made by our leader, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, to try to convince the world that he was indeed the main sponsor of Boko Haram. They continued to echo the same slander about Gen. Buhari that was started by Presidential Spokesman Reuben Abati in 2011, and for which he and his cohorts eventually begged to settle out of court and to apologize to the General. Still we waited. When their attempt to link Gen. Buhari with Boko Haram failed, as his popularity among ordinary Nigerians continued to soar, he was suddenly attacked by suicide bombers. Those who planned the attack believed this as the final solution to what they perceived as the threat he represents to the realization of their ambition. By the grace of God, he survived. We do not claim to know those who attacked him, but we do know those who provided the atmosphere for that attack to take place. Still we waited. When the government declared a state of emergency in three worst-hit states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe in 2013, thousands of troops were deployed to the three states. But the unusual happened. The number of attacks simply skyrocketed. It is common knowledge that in any territory that has been placed under a state of emergency, the military takes charge of security, erecting checkpoints as part of efforts to keep a tab on security. Such was the situation in Borno in April 2014, when over 200 girls were abducted and driven away in many trucks.Soldiers posted to a nearby checkpoint were said to have withdrawn shortly before the attack. Who ordered their withdrawal? Some of the trucks in which the girls were being carted away broke down, yet no one challenged them. Despite this bizarre occurrence, they refused to accept responsibility and continued to cast aspersion on our Party, the APC, as the sponsor of Boko Haram. Still we waited.Boko Haram routinely enriched their arsenal with tanks, Armoured Personnel Carriers, guns, trucks and other military equipment which they seized from the Army. From the videos they release from time to time, one could see Boko Haram insurgents driving around unchallenged in convoys of up to 60 vehicles made-up of tanks and other military vehicles they seized from our military, in a territory that is under a state of emergency. What is happening? No one could fathom it. Still we waited.A man known to all as the kingpin of Boko Haram, a man who helped to arm them so he could win elections and decimate his opponents, was moving around with the best security ever. He is a known ally of the President and he is not known to be under any immunity. Yet he was never arrested or even questioned. Still we waited. In line with a Yoruba adage that says when a drum starts sounding too hard, it is about to burst, the PDP and the Presidency ratcheted up their attacks on our party, labelling us as Boko Haram sponsors. They hired a foreign firm, Levick, for US$1.2 million in taxpayers’ money, as well as a number of out-of-luck hack writers and pseudo analysts, one of them from Russia, to help push the narrative. Still we waited. Then their drum exploded!Dr. Stephen Davis, a man hired by the President Jonathan-led Federal Government to negotiate with Boko Haram for the release of the Chibok girls decided to speak out, believing the best way to tackle the insurgency is to expose the sponsors. And who are they? On international television last Thursday, and as you have just seen and heard, he named former Borno Governor Ali Modu Sheriff and a former Army Chief, Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, as the sponsors of Boko Haram.Prodded by Sahara Reporters in a subsequent interview on whether Gen. Buhari and Malam Nasir el-Rufai were sponsors, he said the Boko Haram commanders who gave him the names of their sponsors did not mention their names. The die is cast. The truth is finally out! Boko Haram sponsors have been exposed. They are within the ruling PDP. They are friends of President Jonathan. He cannot pretend not to know who they are and what they have done and are still doing. His myriad of intelligence agencies, including the DSS and the DMI, cannot pretend they do not have any information on these men.It is true that Ali Modu Sheriff was, until recently, a member of our Party. But the Party always suspected that he was a mole, planted to hijack or at best weaken the new Party for the PDP. He is not new to that role. He helped to decimate his former party, the ANPP, to an extent that the number of states under its control fell from seven in 2003 to three by the time he left as Governor. We know for sure that Ali Modu Sheriff was planted in the APC to help decimate our party. We confronted him openly during the merger negotiation but he denied vigorously. His surrogate for the post of the Chairman of the APC, Chief Tom Ikimi together with whom they planned to hijack the Party for the Presidency was firmly rejected. Realizing they have failed, they fled our party and returned to where they came from, and were duly embraced by their controllers.President Jonathan cannot pretend not to know the alleged role that Ali Modu Sheriff has played in the establishment and growth of Boko Haram, yet he never allowed the man to even be questioned by any of the security agencies under his control. All through his time with our Party, every time they accused us of sponsoring Boko Haram, on the basis of his presence, we challenged them if they had evidence to arrest any of our members who is suspected to be a sponsor, they never did. They dared not, because Sheriff was their agent. Even if he had remained in the APC after we democratically encouraged him to go, they would still not have arrested him.Recall, gentlemen, that immediately Sheriff went back to the PDP, the Maiduguri Airport that had been closed to even the pilgrims from the state on grounds of security, was re-opened specially for him. What more evidence does anyone need that Sheriff was and remains President Jonathan’s Man Friday? Our StandThe truth is finally out. We have been vindicated. We have no hand in the Boko Haram insurgency. The raison d’etre of our party is the well-being and security of NigeriansThe sponsors of Boko Haram are within the PDP and the Presidency. They are known friends of President Jonathan. He knows them and they know him.The man who exposed these Boko Haram sponsors is a Jonathan-appointed Negotiator. He has no axe to grind, neither does he have any motive to shield the APC or portray the PDP/Presidency in bad light. In fact, if he had any sympathy at all, it is for the man who hired him, President Jonathan. We have said it all along. Boko Haram was politicized purely for one reason, and one reason only: To be used as a trump card for President Jonathan to win another term. For that strategy to work, the APC, which they see as the only stumbling block to the PDP’s victory in 2015, must be maligned and labeled. Gullible, duplicitous and self-serving politicians like Femi Fani-Kayode swallowed the bait, hook, line and sinker, and started parroting the glaring lies. PDP spokesman Olisa Metuh, an obvious pawn on the chess board, followed suit, labelling a party that comprises Nigerians of all ethnic and religious hue a supporter of APC and Islamic party. Now he is stewing in his own juice. In the process of this dangerous politics, the Nigerian military which was globally acclaimed for its impressive showings at various peacekeeping missions around the world, simply suffered collateral damage. Apparently, fifth columnists in the military has sold the force out, first by denying it of the necessary fighting tools and then weakening it to such an extent that even the little it had was being taken away daily by insurgents. When the patriotic Gov. Kashim Shettima of Borno tried to raise the issue of the poorly-equipped troops and their low morale, he was roundly pilloried. Now the world knows why!Now that the cat has been let out of the bag and the real sponsors of Boko Haram have been exposed, we hope President Jonathan will summon the courage to do the right thing: Hand over the identified Boko Haram sponsors to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for investigation and prosecution. There is no doubt that Boko Haram has committed crimes against humanity in its scorched-earth campaign against unharmed citizens, and the most appropriate body to investigate and try the sect’s sponsors is the ICC.According to Article 17 of the Rome Statute that set up the ICC, and to which Nigeria is signatory, the ICC is a court of last resort, expected to exercise its jurisdiction only if states themselves are unwilling or unable genuinely to investigate and prosecute international crimes. In view of the fact that the alleged Boko Haram sponsors are either members of the ruling party or friends of the President, it is clear that the PDP-led Federal Government is unwilling and unable to try them, hence our call.Nigerians can rest assured that the APC will not allow this issue to be swept under the carpet. Now that it is clear that the PDP is behind Boko Haram for the sole purpose of winning next year’s Presidential Election, Nigerians must prevail on the PDP and the Presidency to urgently end this insurgency and the daily killing and maiming of innocent Nigerians! The President must remember that he is the Commander-in-Chief! The buck stops on his desk. He must now do all it takes to stop the growing mess in our nation’s North-East.Nigerians expect no less!Source: Osundefender- See more at: http://247nigerianewsupdate.co/they-killed-azazi-to-cover-up-boko-haram-sponsors-are-friends-of-jonathan-chief-john-odigie-oyegun/#sthash.7kIV2f5a.dpuf |
Nigerian government under the leadership of President Goodluck Jonathan is currently under heavy criticisms for branding the newly launched National ID Card with MasterCard’s logo.DailyPost reports that President Jonathan formally launched the issuance process for the MasterCard’s branded National Electronic Identity Card (E-Id Card) at an epoch making event held yesterday at the banquet hall, Presidential Villa, Abuja. The President however failed to explain why the UK-based financial institution branded the ID Card. However, many Nigerians, both at home and in the Diaspora are still wondering why the national property should bear a logo of a foreign conglomerate.According to them, branding the ID Card with the company’s logo was an insult to the acclaimed ‘Giant of Africa.’Those who could not hold back their words took to their various social media platforms to lash out at the PDP led government. In his view, a certain Lanre wrote, “When a government is run by a slowpoke, the people gradually become idiots. I have no pity for Nigeria. As for Nigerians, congratulations on being branded by Mastercard. You are now priceless!Another Oghro Eco wonders why a company should brand a property of a nation, saying that Nigerians should reject the e-ID Card. She said, “President Jonathan is either too dumb or too naive to realize the implications of some of his actions. He may be driven by passion to get results where others have failed but this man just doesn’t understand economics, security or sovereignty. If the many advisers, praise singers and hangers cannot advise the president on things such as this , then they should all be sacked.“Where is madam finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala? Where is Olusegun Aganga, Minister for Trade and Investment? Where is the minister for Agriculture Dr. Akinwumi Adesina? Where is the NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki? Where was Gen. David Mark and Aminu Tambuwal, Senate President and Speaker House of Reps respectively, when this decision was taken and approved? Where was the so-called Council of State when this decision was taken? Why do the leadership in Nigeria suffer from inferiority complex?”Why can’t we use our heads? This is not only disgraceful, it is an abominable and unforgivable act of treason. No Nigerian should get his details into that silly database. We must reject it in all its entirety. Why should it even be conducted by Mastercard? What is the purpose of setting up the Nigeria Minting and Printing Press? Why can’t the Mint in conjuction with the likes of Interswitch be allowed to develop and manage the identity scheme.”Why can’t we encourage the development of our indigenous companies? We tried Sagem of France earlier with the later Chief Sunday Afolabi and they creamed off millions of our hard earned Naira, which Obasanjo allowed Afolabi’s children to keep simply because the man passed away before he could be prosecuted and the money recovered. There is a serious problem with those superintending Nigeria. They don’t seem to have a clue about anything other than how to get to power. Today is a very sad day in our Nations history.”For Omega P , it was totally wrong for Jonathan and his cabinet to accept the appearance of the logo on the national ID card.He voiced his conviction thus, “What is MasterCard to an average Nigerian that can hardly afford three square meal plus if they need one they can get a Prepaid MasterCard which is abundantly available everywhere. Other than facilitating transactions, what other benefit is there in this program? Do you fully understand the possible implication of this program?”We already have bank accounts, we don’t need this facility to be duplicated. Trusting a commercial entity with the information of 170 Million Nigerians is outrageous and vulnerable. i.e. our data can be mined by anyone for commercial purposes among other things. We can easily be tracked, and potentially other countries can access our data which can facilitate their spying and dubious programs. This program immensely breach our privacy with no shadow of doubt. Its disadvantages GIGANTICALLY out-weight its advantages if their is any advantage. However, Godfrey Etokebe sees it from a different perspective. He noted that the card was invalid outside the shores of Nigeria without the logo of MasterCard. His words, “A Nigerian ID card is of no value outside Nigeria except there is authentification by an internationally reputable establishment. With MasterCard on it, this national ID card is actually the best in the world for now. It is futuristic and shall soon be copied by all other countries that can afford it. It is a great feeling to know that Nigeria (my beloved country) is a pacesetter!!! As of today, most countries are doing away with the practice of stamping residence permits to foreign nationals in their passports but instead are adopting the USA GreenCard system. We should all be very happy that MasterCard has agreed to partner Nigeria on this milestone project. The only people that may be criticizing are the elites that believe that it is only their right to be members of MasterCard (which is a status symbol). |

Ask Americans if they think Congress should impeach President Obama, and an angry and outraged 35 percent say yes.Sixty-five percent say no, that impeachment — as former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has called for — goes too far. Still, former President Bill Clinton was impeached with similar survey numbers. The new CNN/ORC International poll released Friday, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points, highlights the partisan divide in Congress and around the nation, with 57 percent of Republicans voting yay to impeach, but only 35 percent of independents and 13 percent of Democrats saying similarly, CNN reported.“Anti-impeachment sentiment is roughly where it was for past presidents,” said CNN polling director Keating Holland, in CNN. “Sixty-seven percent opposed Bill Clinton’s impeachment in September 1998 and 69 percent opposed impeaching George W. Bush when a few Democrats began talking about it in 2006.”Mr. Holland said Americans, by and large, look at impeachment as a serious matter.“Only about one in five say that impeachment is a valid response if Congress is dissatisfied with a president’s policies or the way he is handling his job,” he said. “Nearly eight in 10 say impeachment should be reserved for high crimes and misdemeanors.”The poll comes just a day after the House Rules Committee gave the go-ahead to a resolution that authorizes Speaker John Boehner to move ahead with a lawsuit against the president. |
