The minority leader of House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, of the opposition party, has advised the Federal Government to explore ‘Trade by Barter option’ in its effort to step up military hardware and train military personnel instead of piling up debts. Mr Gbajabiamila, who frowned at what he tagged ‘President Jonathan’s penchant for loans’ when the country had Sovereign Wealth Fund, reserve and excess oil revenue, said the one billion dollars loan which the President was requesting for was one loan too many for Nigeria’s future generation to pay-off and would not be granted. In a statement issued by his media aide, Olanrewaju Smart, the lawmaker said that the President had earlier collected a loan of three trillion Naira allocated to defence in three years with nothing to show for it and advised the National Assembly not to grant the request while urging the Federal Government to try “exchanging oil for military hardware”. Gbajabiamila cited the Al Yamamah Arms Deal between the Saudis and the UK, where a large amount of British military hardware was sold to the Saudi government for 600,000 barrels of crude oil daily, the oil for arms deal between China and Venezuela and the deal struck by the US in 2011 when over 80 F15 fighter jets were sold to the royal Saudi Air Force as example for Nigeria to emulate. He, however, said that if the loan must be approved, clear explanations must be given for some issues such as the conditions for the loan, the repayment schedule and who bears the burden. Other aspects of the loan he insisted must be explained are the practicability of the loan alongside government’s expenditure framework for the next three years and an immediate and a comprehensive audit of what has happened to all the funds allocated by the National Assembly to defence in the last 3 years among other things |

The attention of the Osun State Police Command has been drawn to the rumour making the round that an Executive Secretary of a Local Government in Osun State was arrested by the State Police Command for gun running. This is false in all ramifications. Some newspapers had reported on July 10 that the Executive Secretary was arrested by the police for being in possession of 17 Kalashnikov rifles, 10 Pump Action guns and 50 machetes. No such thing happened in this command. The police received a petition signed by one Hashim Abioye alleging attempted murder, illegal possession of firearms, violent conduct and criminal assault against four persons. The police invited all the parties and carried out a thorough investigation, including searches in the premises of those accused, in company of the petitioner. The allegations turned out to be false and without any basis. No weapon of any kind was found in possession of the Executive Secretary or any of his associates. The Executive Secretary was at no time arrested, detained, taken to Abuja or threatened to be taken to Abuja by the command. It is most unfortunate that newspapers will report outright falsehood, unduly fuel crisis among the parties and generate tension among the people. The quantum of weapons alleged is sufficient to start a war and the false report is therefore capable of instilling fear in the people and bring the peace in the state on the edge. This kind of allegation is therefore very sensitive and requires to be verified by the appropriate authority, which is the police. For the avoidance of doubt, this command is alive to its responsibility of protecting lives and property and maintaining the liberty of all the people. We will therefore not allow any action capable of undermining the peace enjoyed in the state. The police will like to advise those concerned to stop spreading rumours, falsehood and making unfounded allegations. We will also like to appeal to the media to be alive to their social responsibility of reporting the truth, and not speculation, and therefore seek to confirm any allegation from the police, no matter how seemingly credible the source may look. Alhaji Ibrahim Maishanu Commissioner of Police, Osun State Command |
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has warned the PDP-led federal government against the dangerous tactics of polarizing the country along fault lines as a means of diverting the attention of Nigerians from its ineptitude and apathetic posture to corruption and insecurity.Reacting to a report in a weekly paper, alleging that a former Russian spy has linked the Action Progressive Congress (APC) to terrorists and extremists, the former Vice President said these sponsored allegations by the PDP administration would not help the country. He said no responsible government should seek to create division, suspicion and animosity among its citizens by linking the opposition leaders with terrorist activities or accusing them of harbouring extremists.According to Atiku, the PDP has officially and publicly through its National Publicity Secretary, labelled APC the “Islamic Brotherhood Party of Nigeria” and the “supporter of APC Party,” nomenclatures he said, were borrowed from abroad and did not in any way or form exist in Nigeria. He said the latest publication about a so-called former Russian spy is a continuation of the PDP campaign of calumny against the opposition party and its leaders in order to divert attention from the epic failures of the ruling party to deliver the goods. The former Vice President noted with concern the tactics of the PDP administration to drive a wedge between the people by using a religious divide-and-rule strategy to get a re-election in 2015. Atiku Abubakar restated that the greatest challenges facing Nigeria are insecurity, joblessness, hopelessness, hunger, unemployment, disease, fear of the future and poverty.“The APC is a party for all Nigerians, irrespective of their religious, ethnic or regional identities. Let no one get confused. The APC is the party to stop the looting of the treasury. We will thoroughly investigate and uncover whatever is missing of the alleged 50 Billion Dollars stolen from the sale of crude oil. We are going to stop the government-backed theft of crude oil which swings between the daily averages of 100,000 to 300,000 barrels a day. APC is the party to create jobs and end joblessness,” the former Vice President said.He explained that these problems affect all ordinary Nigerians, regardless of their religion or ethnicity or section of the country they come from. The former Vice President maintained that the PDP tactics of divide and rule is a reflection of desperation because the citizens are openly clamouring for change.Dismissing the allegations of harbouring extremists by the opposition as utter rubbish and sheer fabrication, the former Vice President said the PDP administration should attend to serious national problems crying for attention. He expressed surprise that a PDP administration that has a moral burden of accounting for billions of dollars of national revenues mysteriously missing should divert public attention by seeking refuge in the pastime of accusing the opposition leaders of harbouring extremists or sponsoring terrorism. |

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described as a compound embarrassment the fact that it took 17-year-old girl-child education campaigner, Pakistani Malala Yousafzai, to visit and convince President Goodluck Jonathan to agree to a meeting with representatives of the parents of the kidnapped school girls.”President Jonathan, who has already embarrassed himself and the entire people of Nigeria by his inexplicable failure to visit Chibok since the girls were abducted over 90 days ago, has compounded the embarrassment and insulted Nigerians by waiting for Malala to goad him to meet with the girls’ parents, not in Chibok but in Abuja,” the party said in a statement in Lagos, Thursday, by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed. It said after the meeting failed, because the parents were not properly informed and invited, a shameless presidency turned around to blame the opposition and the patriotic and selfless Nigerians who have been campaigning daily, under the #Bringbackourgirls group.”Fortunately, and to the eternal discomfiture of the presidency, the Chibok community has said the decision not to meet with President Jonathan in Abuja was theirs and theirs alone, and that they took that decision because their sole reason for coming to Abuja was to meet with Malala, and not the President who did not invite them anyway.”With this explanation, one would have expected a presidency that has regard for the truth to immediately retract its earlier panic statement, which it issued to save face after what was nothing but a PR gimmick blew up in their face, and apologize to the opposition and the #Bringbackourgirls group that were unjustly pilloried by them.”Instead, the presidency has persisted in its distortion of the truth, for which they have now become infamous, even as a new date has been agreed for the meeting. This is unfortunate, condemnable and irresponsible,” APC said. ”If indeed, as the presidency claimed earlier, that the opposition was behind the earlier refusal by the parents and escaped girls not to see the President, what has then happened to make them change their minds? Has the opposition now asked them to meet with the President?”The party alerted Nigerians that the reason President Jonathan, whose wife bullied and harangued the girls’ parents on the grounds that they were lying and that no girl was missing, agreed to meet with the parents is so that he could use the meeting as a photo-op, after Malala pushed for it and the President’s US-based image laundering firm acceded to it.”Mr. President, your frantic effort to meet with the Chibok parents now is too little too late, and no amount of photo-op will change that. If your handlers had been sincere, Mr. President, they would have told you that the best venue of the meeting is Chibok, not Abuja where your people tried, but failed, to waylay the parents who came for a meeting with Malala.”Mr. President, you have ceaselessly compared yourself to the great leaders of our time, including US President Barack Obama. But do you think Obama would have refused to visit the parents of these abducted school girls if the abduction had occurred in the US? Do you think Obama, as Commander-in-Chief, would have refused to visit his troops in the front line of the anti-terror fight as you have done?”Do you think, Mr. President, that a band of rogue elements like Boko Haram would have restricted Obama’s movement within his own country as they have done to you? No true and caring President will ever fail to visit the sites of disasters and offer solace to his compatriots,” it said.APC reminded President Jonathan that neither in Nigeria’s culture nor in any other culture are those hit by tragedy invited to be offered solace, adding that the practice is to visit those to be offered solace ‘in situ’.The party reiterated its earlier call on the President to shake off his lethargy and bring the abducted school girls home safely, instead of playing politics with the lives of over 200 human beings.- See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/07/meeting-chibok-parents-jonathan-embarrassed-nigeria-apc/#sthash.M5PowVZz.dpuf |

By Soni Daniel, Northern Region Editor ABUJA— Forty-eight hours after Governor Murtala Nyako was removed from office, details of how the game plan was hatched and implemented by the House of Assembly have emerged. Gov. Murtala Nyako of Adamawa A top source at the Assembly told Vanguard that the deputy governor, Bala Ngilari, who was billed to take over from Nyako, having not been found culpable of any offence, was reportedly tricked to resign as the only condition for the House leadership to impeach the governor and clear the way for him to take over. The House, made up of mostly anti-Nyako elements, it was learnt, had convinced Ngilari that it was only after he had put in his resignation letter that they could commence the process of impeaching Nyako. The pro impeachment lawmakers, who wanted the Speaker, Ahmadu Fintiri to take over from Nyako instead of Ngilari, made it clear to the deputy governor that it was better for him to resign and be installed as the governor than be impeached and sent packing. Apparently not suspecting any foul play by the lawmakers, the then deputy governor rushed a three paragraph resignation letter and handed it over to the Speaker with the hope that he would be announced as a replacement for Nyako. However, few minutes after he had handed over the letter and with mounting expectation that he would be named the next governor, the lawmakers shocked Ngilari with an announcement that he had voluntarily resigned to avoid being impeached. They did not read to the portion of the report indicting him along with Nyako and why he had surreptitiously quit his position before the offences against him were made public. A top government official said in Yola, yesterday, that Ngilari played into the hands of his opponents in the House of Assembly by accepting to direct the letter of his resignation to the House of Assembly when the law expected him to hand it over to the governor of the state. The source said that it was when Ngilari realised that |

Since the abduction of over 200 girls from Government Secondary School Chibok in Borno State and the eventual acceptance by the presidency that the girls were actually kidnapped, after initially keeping sealed lips indicating that such event never occurred, there have been several reports that the government is almost reaching a deal with the Boko Haram sect to free the girls. In spite of all the reports and high hopes raised by them, the girls have remained in captivity nearly three months since they were abducted. Nothing concrete has come out of the several reported negotiations going on between the government and the Boko Haram leadership. In what could however be responsible for the delay in the rescue of the girls, the first lady, Dame Patience Jonathan has been alleged to be standing in the way of the effort to bring the girls back home.According to NewsRescue, a trusted inner-circle confidant of the Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan has revealed that the First-Lady/president’s wife, Patience Jonathan is behind the refusal of the State security services and defense forces to rescue and free over 200 girls abducted from a school in Chibok, mid April.According to the source who demanded absolute confidentiality, the President told him that his wife said, “the girls and their families must suffer as she suffered humiliation in the eyes of the world,” further threatening the president that “he should get rid of her (President’s wife) first, before he dares to order the rescue of the abducted girls.”The source said that this is why several successful efforts to free the girls were aborted by executive order of the president at the last minute. Source said the American experts involved in rescuing the girls were exasperated — that despite accurate intelligence shared which made safe rescue missions possible since several weeks ago, Nigeria simply refused to give the order. It would be recollected that a Boko Haram sympathizer and chief negotiator, Ahmad Saldika was flown in from the UAE to negotiate the release of the girls in early June. He had successfully struck a deal and took a video showing the girls with Boko Haram to the presidential Villa, however at the last minute when the swap of the girls for non-combatant Boko Haram ‘sympathizer’ prisoners was to be conducted, the president suddenly called in from France where he was attending an anti-terror summit, and aborted the mission. He said that this was due to pressure from his wife. The source also reminded us that when the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh had revealed to Nigeria that they knew exactly where the abducted girls were, the presidency displayed its anger towards him for making this known to the public.National conference member Fati Ibrahim, Chief of defence Alex Badeh and Rep. Beni LarHe explained that president Goodluck Jonathan’s hands were tied by his wife who felt so humiliated when videos, songs and even T-shirts of her crying and making incoherent utterances [#DiaRISGODo] went viral. Source said, she took it very personal with the victims, the teachers and families for turning her down when she invited them over for a coffee meeting to crush the globally spreading scandal of the abduction.Source further said, the First-lady has never felt so humiliated in her life, and recognized that the scandal of the abduction and failed efforts including her and government denials, and publication of a fake rescue after the event, made this (abduction) incident the major challenge to a second term ambition. As such, she said for as long as she lives, the girls must remain in the forest and die with the terrorists.According to our reliable informant, it is open knowledge in executive and top military circles that the 200+ girls could be rescued within 24 hours of an order by the president however such order was not forthcoming due to ‘domestic matters.’“If you want the girls out tomorrow, talk to Patience,” he concluded. |
