…Says Democracy Dying as Leaders No Longer Serve the People Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the last general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has warned that democracy in Nigeria is under grave threat, lamenting that it has been hijacked by the elite and reduced to a tool for state capture.https://www.vanguardngr.com/2025/09/democracy-in-nigeria-now-tool-for-elite-state-capture-peter-obi/

ABUJA — Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has faulted President Bola Tinubu over the suspension and recent reinstatement of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and members of the State House of Assembly, describing the action as unconstitutional and illegal. Atiku, in a statement posted Thursday on his official X platform, insisted that there was nothing to celebrate in the lifting of the suspension, as the action itself had no basis in law. “Lifting the suspension of Governor Simi Fubara is nothing to cheer about. The suspension of the Rivers State Governor and the State House of Assembly was unconstitutional when it was done six months ago and is still illegal today,” Atiku wrote. He further stressed that President Tinubu lacked the constitutional authority to suspend a democratically elected governor and state lawmakers, declaring the episode a dangerous sign of creeping dictatorship. “President Tinubu had no power to suspend a democratically elected governor and state lawmakers. The Rivers shenanigans only signpost the dictatorship of the Tinubu administration,” the former Vice President added. Atiku’s remarks come barely 24 hours after President Tinubu lifted the state of emergency in Rivers State and directed Governor Fubara, his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, and members of the House of Assembly to resume office on Thursday, September 18. |
F2st5s:Who appeal the judgment |
Wallade:Judging by your tone, you seem quite invested in the matter, perhaps even more than a neutral observer would be. Interested party, maybe? Did the judgment of the lower court ever state that she’s barred from returning to the Senate after the six-month suspension expires? |
Benbellamor:Where did you all emerge from? If a lower court delivers a judgment and the party is dissatisfied with the outcome, does the law not afford her the right to seek redress by appealing to a higher court |

You keep hearing it from govt spokespeople & headlines: 'Economy is stabilizing', 'Nigeria is on the path to growth'. 'Food prices crashing', Inflation coming down, they even claimed that it will soon get to single digit. But for most Nigerians, these words sound like insults. What people feel isn’t growth it’s hunger. What they see isn’t progress it’s job losses, skyrocketing food prices, purchasing power shrinking, grid collapse with its attendant power outages. What they live isn’t recovery it’s a daily struggle to survive. Since the so called reforms began fuel subsidy removal, naira devaluation, floating exchange rates, the cost of living has exploded: Petrol prices tripled Electricity tariffs unaffordable, Naira lost over 200% of its value Minimum wage increased to N70k, but inflation eats away purchasing power fast. The government calls this “necessary sacrifice” as if suffering is a patriotic duty meant for the masses. They ask Nigerians to endure hardship for a promised tomorrow that never clearly arrives and often only benefits the elites. Meanwhile, over 130 million Nigerians live in poverty.Millions skip meals, small businesses shut down. Parents can’t afford school fees. Safety nets? A few bags of rice mostly inaccessible and politicized. This isn’t progress. It’s economic violence in disguise, pushing the burden onto the poor, while the elites stay insulated. GDP numbers, fiscal charts, IMF praise mean nothing if Nigerians can’t afford food, transport, rent, or healthcare. Pain is not policy. Nigerians deserve real progress not policies that deepen inequality and suffering. |

“In truth, what INEC has done is to place a legal stamp on a house built on sand,” said the ruling party. The All Progressives Congress in Lagos described the recognition of the African Democratic Congress by the Independent National Electoral Commission as a hollow victory. The ruling party, in a statement by its Lagos chapter’s spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, however, welcomed the recognition ahead of the 2027 general elections, asserting that the legitimacy would allow the coalition to build structures anchored on transparency and principles, rather than manipulation, propaganda, and excuses. “The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress congratulates the newly recognised leadership of the African Democratic Congress following the pronouncement by the Independent National Electoral Commission,” the statement said. It added, “While we acknowledge this formal recognition, we cannot overlook the many pitfalls, questionable processes, and undeniable undemocratic, underhanded tactics that trailed its emergence. In truth, what INEC has done is to place a legal stamp on a house built on sand.” While charging ADC “to be prepared to add value to Nigeria’s democracy by playing the role of a credible opposition that offers realistic policy alternatives, rather than indulging in bitter rhetoric that adds no value to governance or the lives of Nigerians”, the APC cautioned the coalition against premature campaigns, noting the 2027 elections are still far ahead. “To jump the gun not only undermines fair competition but also exposes a party’s desperation and disregard for law and order,” it said. The ruling party further accused the coalition of building excuses, issuing press statements, and thriving on empty noise, compared to the APC, which, according to the statement, builds roads, rails, power infrastructure, and implements economic reforms that create a future for Nigerians. Stating that the ruling APC, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, remains fully committed to fair play, the law, and the democratic order, the statement advised the ADC to channel its energies into issue-based politics, constructive engagement, and adherence to the rules of the game, rather than indulging in political rascality and premature electioneering https://gazettengr.com/apc-slams-inec-for-recognising-shady-adc-as-political-party/ |
favor914:This is exactly the problem you Agbadóos, when logic fails, you resort to poetry and titles. Jagaban of the whatever or BAT from hell doesn’t explain the contradiction. You said protests should happen in one's region, yet Tinubu protested in Abuja which is not his region. Simple question: Why the double standard? Abuja might be the center, but it's still in North Central. Geography doesn’t bend for political fan fiction. Either regional protests are valid for everyone, or your argument collapses under its own hypocrisy. Stick to facts, not fairy tales. |
favor914:Mental slavery is blindly defending a system that’s sinking you. But don’t worry when real change finally comes, we’ll still lift you up with the rest, even if you were busy dancing for crumbs and standing on a dilápidatéd mandate |
China, India, Vietnam, Others lift people out of poverty – In Nigeria people fall into it – Obi Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has lamented Nigeria’s worsening poverty rate, contrasting it with the progress made by countries like China, India, and Vietnam in lifting millions of their citizens out of poverty through disciplined execution of policies. Obi stated this in Lagos while delivering the keynote address at the maiden Lagos Business School (LBS) All MBA Students Conference, which also hosted visiting MBA students from Cambridge University’s Judge Business School. He later shared highlights of his remarks in a post on his X platform. Speaking on the theme “Execution as a Competitive Edge,” Obi emphasized that while planning and strategizing are important, they are meaningless without effective execution. “Execution that delivers results is driven by competent and responsible leadership with capacity, compassion, and character to drive disciplined and committed implementation of sound policies and strategies,” he said. Obi cited China, India, and Vietnam as examples of nations where disciplined execution under responsible leadership translated into tangible progress during the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) era (2000–2015) and the ongoing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) period (2015–2030). According to him, through consistent execution, China lifted over 430 million people out of poverty, India lifted 270 million, while Vietnam lifted 45 million, significantly improving their Human Development Index (HDI). He, however, expressed regret that Nigeria and much of Sub-Saharan Africa have failed to achieve similar results despite signing on to the same global policies. “While these countries and others are lifting people out of poverty, more people are falling into poverty in Nigeria, with over 130 million Nigerians presently classified as multidimensionally poor,” he lamented. The former Anambra State governor stressed that the lack of competent leadership and inconsistent execution has left Nigeria struggling, even as other nations make progress. He further noted that the challenge extends beyond governance, pointing out that many successful companies also owe their sustainability to competent and responsible leadership at board and management levels. Obi argued that for Nigeria to reverse its decline and deliver lasting positive impact, the nation requires leaders with capacity, compassion, character, and commitment to disciplined execution. “That is what Nigeria needs today. A New Nigeria is Possible,” he declared. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2025/09/china-india-vietnam-others-lift-people-out-of-poverty-in-nigeria-people-fall-into-it-obi/ |
Factcheck0001:You are just a hypocrîte First, you said "protest in your region." I pointed out that even Tinubu didn't protest in his region. Now you're saying he protested in his region and then moved it to Abuja. So, why did he leave his region to go to Abuja to protest? Why didn't he restrict his protest to his region? Because, last I checked, Abuja is in the North Central zone. Is Tinubu from the North Central? |
Factcheck0001:You say protest in your region, like bad governance has borders. Last I checked, Tinubu isn’t a regional president, he’s the President of Nigeria. If his policies affect all Nigerians, then all Nigerians have the right to protest anywhere in the country. That’s how democracy works. Don’t try to rewrite the constitution. If you want protests restricted by region, go ahead and sponsor a bill. Until then, sit this one out. Tinubu protested as an opposition leader, He protested in Abuja and Lagos. Have you conveniently forgotten #OccupyNigeria? He didn’t say, Let me stay in Lagos because Jonathan is from Bayelsa. So stop twisting history to fit your weak narrative. You say clean your house first, but you’re backing a government that has turned the whole country into a dumpsite. Before pointing fingers, ask yourself, is your own region free from insecurity, banditry, and corruption? Protest is a constitutional right, and it will be exercised wherever injustice exists not just where it makes you feel comfortable. |
In the wake of global protests most recently the spirited demonstrations in Nepal, Nigeria’s ruling elite and their most vocal supporters seem increasingly nervous. The mere mention of protest now triggers fear-mongering, threats, and desperate attempts to silence dissent. One recent example is comedian-turned-political-influencer Seyi Law, a staunch supporter of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who warned Nigerians calling for protests to learn from Libya. But what exactly should Nigerians learn? That asking for good governance is dangerous? That protesting economic hardship is now a crime? Or that authoritarian regimes survive only when the people are too afraid to speak? This reaction is not just undemocratic, it is steeped in hypocrisy. Tinubu himself built much of his political relevance by using protest and civil disobedience as tools of resistance. He was a key figure during the 2012 fuel subsidy protests under President Goodluck Jonathan. In Ojota, he funded, organized, and marched with the masses against the removal of subsidy a policy he now ruthlessly enforces, with far worse consequences and even less transparency. If Tinubu were in opposition today, he would be leading protests against this very government against soaring inflation, a collapsing currency, skyrocketing fuel prices, mass unemployment, and growing insecurity. His political playbook was written in the language of resistance. Yet today, his allies treat protest as rebellion and activism as treason. So why the sudden change? The truth is simple: what Tinubu’s supporters fear is not chaos, they fear accountability. Protests expose the those in power. They draw attention to failed policies, broken promises, and a growing disconnect between leaders and the people. Tinubu’s camp fears Nigerians are waking up to the truth that docility is not peace, and silence is not support. Using Libya as a scare tactic to silence Nigerians is not only dishonest, it’s deeply insulting. Libya didn’t collapse because citizens protested, it collapsed because of an unyielding regime that refused reform, clung to power, and met dissent with brutality. Ironically, that’s the very behavior protests are meant to stop. Nigerians have a proud tradition of protest, from fighting colonial rule, to resisting military dictators, to opposing unjust economic reforms. If democracy is to mean anything, it must include the right to speak out, to organize, and to protest. So, again, why are Tinubu, the APC, and Agbadoos so afraid of protests? Because they know their government cannot survive real scrutiny. Because they know their house is built on the same shaky foundations they once stood outside protesting against. And because this time, they know the people are waking up and losing their fear. |
Putindbutt:What is fake news |
The presidential spokesperson explained that “When the currency adjusts, the naira value of existing external debt rises—whether or not new loans are taken.” The President Bola Tinubu-led government on Tuesday blamed Nigeria’s debt on naira depreciation, dismissing criticisms that it is piling up debt for the country through reckless borrowings. In a statement on Tuesday, Mr Tinubu’s spokesperson, Sunday Dare, said Nigeria’s debt had remained the same since March. “Nigeria’s total public debt stood at ₦149.39 trillion as of March 31, 2025, according to the Debt Management Office,” Mr Dare said. “The jump from last year is not the result of reckless borrowing but largely the arithmetic of naira depreciation,” he added. The presidential spokesperson explained that “When the currency adjusts, the naira value of existing external debt rises—whether or not new loans are taken.” In comparison, Mr Dare argued that “Nigeria’s debt-to-GDP ratio remains a moderate 40–45 per cent, well below South Africa’s 70 per cent or Ghana’s 90 per cent plus. The real challenge lies in revenue mobilisation, not runaway borrowing. Encouragingly, revenues are improving, strengthening our capacity to service obligations. For Mr Dare, “Borrowing is a legitimate tool for financing growth and reforms.” Mr Dare’s statement drew responses from some netizens who disagreed with his stance on Nigeria’s debt under Mr Tinubu’s watch. An X user, @Iam_arizona, said, “Which regime caused naira depreciation. How much has the current regime borrowed? Defending Tinubu, you must sound stupid.” Another user, @Orewae, said, “Your government is unpopular and in the minority. Your principal’s mode of governance is extremely irritating to the majority of Nigerians. Who depreciated the naira?” “Naira has appreciated in the larger part of this year; the debt should reduce. Govt claims it has made so much money this year, the debt should either stagnate or reduce,” @udoetuknyanah said. Also, @luvfemi2015 said, “A govt with wicked and heartless policies. It’s only the sycophants that are praising this government. 99.9 per cent of Nigerians detest this wicked government.” https://gazettengr.com/tinubu-govt-blames-rising-nigerias-debt-on-naira-collapse/ |
Former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, on Monday, submitted a petition against the state’s Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Rabiu, over what he described as “unprofessional conduct, abuse of office, and serial violations”. The petition was a fresh twist in the face-off between the leadership of the African Democratic Congress in Kaduna State and the state’s police command. The Kaduna police had sealed the Kaduna ADC secretariat last Thursday and subsequently invited El-Rufai and other ADC leaders for questioning for alleged “conspiracy, incitement, mischief, and disturbance of public peace in the state”. Previously, members of the Kaduna ADC had suffered attacks by political thugs, with the ADC accusing the police of backing the thugs. Rather than honour the police invitation, El-Rufai, according to a statement on Monday by his media aide, Muyiwa Adekeye, dragged the police commissioner before the Police Service Commissioner. El-Rufai, in the petition, alleged that the Commissioner of Police and some officers of the Kaduna Police Command had engaged in acts “unbecoming of their calling” since assuming office on December 30, 2024. The former governor said he was compelled to alert the PSC after an earlier petition to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, failed to curb what he called the “egregiously unlawful” conduct of the officers. “I am writing out of concern that the Nigeria Police, warts and all, is the only frontline law enforcement institution we have,” El-Rufai stated in a statement signed by his media adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye, in Kaduna on Monday. “The duty of all citizens is not only to support it at every level but also to ensure that the commission is provided opportunities to deliver on its regulatory powers to enforce discipline and promote sound and ethical conduct by all police officers at all times,” he added. El-Rufai, known for his fiery disposition, accused some police officers of “serving interests other than those conferred by law,” insisting that such behaviour tarnished the image of the force and eroded public confidence in its leadership. “This laudable goal can only be attained if the commission’s attention is continuously drawn to any egregious conduct of some bad eggs that serve interests other than those conferred by law in Section 4 of the Police Act, 2020,” he said. “Such conduct thereby negatively affects the image of the Police and undermines public confidence in its leadership.” The former governor did not provide details of the alleged misconduct in the petition made available to the media, but sources close to him said it was linked to a series of police actions in the state in recent months that allegedly targeted some of his political associates. The Kaduna State Police Command had yet to react officially to the petition as calls and messages sent to the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, were unanswered. The PUNCH had reported that the Kaduna Police Command had, on Thursday, summoned El-Rufai and six top members of the ADC over alleged conspiracy, incitement, mischief, and disturbance of public peace in the state. In a letter dated September 4, 2025, signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department, DCP Uzairu Abdullahi, had said the ADC State Chairman was directed to produce the seven individuals before the State Criminal Investigation Department on September 8, 2025, to clarify allegations contained in a complaint filed by unidentified parties. The individuals listed in the letter include: Mallam Nasir El-Rufai; Bashir Sa’idu; Jafaru Sani; Ubaidullah Mohammed (a.k.a. “30”); Nasiru Maikano; Aminu Abita, and Ahmed Rufa’i Hussaini (a.k.a. “Mikiya”) The letter had stated: “This Department is currently investigating the above-mentioned case involving the following members of your party. You are requested to come along with them to SCID to clarify allegations reported against them by the complainants on 8th September, 2025.” Earlier on the same day, security operatives from the Kaduna State Police Command sealed off the ADC’s state secretariat at No. 4 Ali Akilu Road, Kaduna, just hours before the anticipated visit from the ADC’s North-West leadership. The visit had been scheduled as a commiseration mission following a violent incident in which party members were attacked by political thugs the previous week. The PUNCH reports that at a press briefing held at his residence in Kaduna on September 4(Thursday), El-Rufai vehemently condemned the police’s actions as unconstitutional overreach. He revealed that the meeting was intended for the ADC North-West leadership to express solidarity with members wounded in the violent attack last week. However, he said, the police commissioner intervened, claiming—without providing documentation—that a court order barred the meeting. El-Rufai stated, “He knows what he’s writing violates the Constitution. We have not seen the court order. It has not been properly served on us. Even if there is a court order, there is a legal process to serve an affected person, and it has not been served on us.” Despite these grievances, he noted, ADC leaders chose to defer to the police to avoid confrontation: “As responsible leaders, we decided that even though we have not seen the order, we believe the commissioner of police. Because we don’t believe the commissioner of police could be lying.” El-Rufai also signalled that the matter would not end with the shutdown, hinting at a protracted legal fight: “We want to see that order and, of course, we will challenge whatever grounds to the Supreme Court. This is not the end of it. Other things will follow after this,” he declared. This sudden crackdown comes amid an already fraught political climate. Last week’s disrupted coalition meeting, where suspected thugs stormed the venue, injuring several attendees and causing extensive property damage, all in the presence of police officers who were accused of inaction. Prior to this, the ADC in Kaduna State distanced the party from El-Rufai’s role in inaugurating the transition committee during the disputed event, arguing that the gathering lacked consultation and legitimacy. ADC officials described the act as fraudulent and destabilising. Meanwhile, the State Government had maintained a firm stance against El-Rufai’s perceived provocations. In a statement dated September 1, the Commissioner for Internal Security, Dr. Shehu Shuaibu, accused the ex-governor of scheming to “destabilize our hard-won peace,” especially in light of the ADC’s setbacks in recent by-elections. The statement had warned: “Anyone who dares to threaten it, be it Nasir El-Rufai or any of his accomplices, will be held accountable.” https://punchng.com/kaduna-violence-el-rufai-adc-leaders-shun-police-invitation/ |
President Bola Tinubu’s administration has taken a swipe at former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai over comments faulting the administration’s non-kinetic approach to addressing insecurity in the country. Mr El-Rufai, in a recent Channels TV interview, faulted what he described as “kiss-the-bandits policy” under Mr Tinubu, accusing his administration of paying bandits and kidnappers in the name of a non-kinetic approach. The former governor also claimed insecurity has worsened in Kaduna under Governor Uba Sani Uba’s watch, accusing his administration of empowering bandits. Posting a snippet of the interview on X on Monday, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga described Mr El-Rufai as a confused “master of ambivalence”, accusing him of leading the way in paying bandits and opposing the approach he once supported. “Malam Nasir EL-Rufai is the master of ambivalence. Once upon a time, he supported and led the way in paying bandits to calm them. Today, in the name of politics, he opposes it,” Mr Onanuga wrote. Mr El-Rufai’s administration as Kaduna governor was marked with security challenges, especially killings in Southern Kaduna and kidnapping for ransom. Despite being accused of escalating the crises with his punitive policies, Mr El-Rufai, in the interview, boasted he dealt with the situation without paying bandits or kidnappers. Meanwhile, Mr Sani dismissed the allegations as political mischief, saying his administration had never paid a dime to bandits. https://gazettengr.com/el-rufai-master-of-ambivalence-paid-bandits-as-governor-tinubu-govt/ |

Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress in the 2023 elections, Omoyele Sowore, has vowed not to delete a tweet critical of President Bola Tinubu, despite a reported request from the Department of State Services to X, demanding its removal. Sowore disclosed this in a post on his X account on Sunday morning, revealing that the social media platform had formally contacted him about the DSS request. Sowore, a human rights activist, journalist, and publisher of Sahara Reporters, is known for his outspoken criticism of successive Nigerian governments and advocacy for good governance. He contested the 2019 and 2023 presidential elections under the African Action Congress and has been at the forefront of several pro-democracy campaigns. PUNCH Online earlier reported that the DSS had written to X Corp., demanding the immediate takedown of Sowore’s post, claiming it disparaged Tinubu and posed a threat to national security. Vowing not to play to the DSS’ gallery, he wrote, “This morning, X (formerly Twitter) officially contacted me about the despicable threat letter they received from the lawless DSS over my Tweet on Tinubu. One option I will NOT be taking is deleting that Tweet. Thank you, @X,” Sowore wrote. He also shared the message sent to him by X, which confirmed that the platform had received a legal request from the Nigerian secret police concerning his post. The message read, “Hello @YeleSowore. In the interest of transparency, we are writing to inform you that X has received a request from the Department of State Services regarding your X account, @YeleSowore, that claims the following content violates the law(s) of Nigeria. @YeleSowore, we have not taken any action on the reported content at this time as a result of this request. “As X strongly believes in defending and respecting the voice of our users, it is our policy to notify our users if we receive a legal request from an authorised entity (such as law enforcement or a government agency) to remove content from their account. We provide notice whether or not the user lives in the country where the request originated. This page provides more information: https://help.x.com/en/rules-and-policies/defending-and-respecting-our-users-voice “We understand that receiving this type of notice can be an unsettling experience. While X is not able to provide legal advice, we want you to have an opportunity to evaluate the request and, if you wish, take appropriate action to protect your interests. “This may include seeking legal counsel and challenging the request in court, contacting relevant civil society organisations, voluntarily deleting the content (if applicable), or finding some other resolution. For more information on legal requests X receives from governments worldwide, please refer to this article on our Help Centre and our biannual Transparency Report: https://help.x.com/en/rules-and-policies/x-legal-faqs https://transparency.x.com.” PUNCH Online reports that Sowore has frequently accused the DSS and other government agencies of clamping down on dissent and free speech, insisting that his criticism of the Tinubu administration falls under constitutionally guaranteed rights. The DSS, Nigeria’s domestic intelligence agency, has in the past been accused by rights groups of targeting dissenting voices and clamping down on free expression. Sowore himself was arrested by the DSS in 2019 over his “RevolutionNow” protest movement and was detained for several months despite court orders granting him bail. X (formerly Twitter) has a stated policy of notifying users when it receives legal demands from governments requesting the takedown of content. The platform has also faced pressure in Nigeria before — most notably during the 2021 Twitter ban by the Federal Government, which accused the company of undermining national security after it deleted a tweet by then-President Muhammadu Buhari. Sowore’s latest confrontation with the DSS highlights the ongoing tension between government authorities and citizens’ digital rights, particularly regarding criticism of public officials online. His insistence on keeping the tweet online could spark renewed public debate on freedom of speech, government surveillance, and the limits of dissent in Nigeria’s democracy https://punchng.com/sowore-vows-not-to-delete-anti-tinubu-tweet/ |

•Backs the President on State PoliceLoud on why •It may be difficult to defeat him in 2027 ABUJA: Former Governor of Sokoto State and Senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has expressed strong support for President Bola Tinubu’s push for the establishment of state police, stressing that it is a necessary step to address the worsening insecurity in the country. Speaking on Friday night during Channels Television’s Politics Today, monitored in Abuja, Tambuwal painted a grim picture of the security situation in Sokoto State, particularly in his senatorial district. On the debate around state police, the lawmaker dismissed concerns about possible misuse, insisting that Nigeria’s peculiar challenges demand such an institution. “I am no longer a governor but I support state police. Yes, we have federal police, but part of the problem is that when you post someone from Sokoto to Enugu, he doesn’t understand the terrain or the language. In any case, we need more boots on the ground in the police and the army,” he said. Tambuwal emphasised that establishing state police must go hand-in-hand with adequate recruitment, improved welfare and the provision of modern tools for security personnel. “We need to recruit more hands. Their welfare and remuneration are also key. When a personnel gets killed in the field, what happens to their families? This welfare should go beyond the personnel alone,” he added. Tambuwal’s position aligns with Tinubu’s renewed push for constitutional reforms to enable states establish their own police formations, amid widespread concerns over rising insecurity across the country. Payment to bandits He also said he was not aware of information that bandits were being paid by the federal government or anyone. He sought the assistance of the president to end banditry in Sokoto State. While he said he is 100 percent committed to the legitimate activities of the anti-Tinubu coalition to prevent his reelection, Tambuwal said he remained a member of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP and would hope that the PDP and the African Democratic Congress ADC work together as a coalition to defeat Tinubu. He said the battle to send Tinubu packing in 2027 is a national consensus, not a Northern conspiracy. Tambuwal said it will be difficult to defeat Tinubu if Abubakar Atiku, Peter Obi, Goodluck Jonathan, Rotimi Amaechi and Rabiu Kwankwaso decide to have an individual go at the presidency instead of working together to field one person. On whether he ever paid bandits as governor or if he knows whether any official is paying the bandits, Tambuwal answered in the negative. “I am not aware. I do not know. I cannot claim to know that bandits are being paid by anyone”, he said in answer to a specific question about claims by a former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai alleging that the Tinubu administration was paying bandits. He lamented that bandits have taken over his senatorial district. “They have almost taken over every local government in Sokoto South and Sokoto East. The situation is getting worse. As I speak with you, Shagari Local Government has been evacuated — the villagers have fled and the terrorists are in charge. The same thing is happening in Tureta, Bodinga and other areas,” he lamented. Tambuwal, who also served as Speaker of the House of Representatives, noted that the attackers operate mainly as bandits, engaging in kidnapping and killings. He stressed the need for a coordinated and simultaneous military offensive, pointing out that most of the criminal gangs retreat from Zamfara into Sokoto when pressured by security operatives. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2025/09/battle-to-unseat-tinubu-a-national-consensus-not-northern-conspiracy-tambuwal/ |

The Osun State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has raised questions over figures released by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration, CVR. The PDP in a statement issued on Thursday in Osogbo and signed by the party’s Director of Media, Hezekiah Oladele Bamiji, expressed concern about a significant disparity between online pre-registrations and completed in-person registrations in Osun State. The statement said INEC’s report revealed that more than 470,000 residents in Osun commenced their registration online within two weeks, but fewer than 600 were said to have completed the mandatory in-person process. The Osun PDP described the figures as “a worrisome gap that raises serious questions about the transparency, credibility, and efficiency of the registration process”. The party alleged that over 25,000 registrations had been physically completed at INEC centres in the state, yet the national office’s report accounted for only about 500. “It is inconceivable and unacceptable that Osun, a state where daily averages of 1,500 to 2,000 voters complete their in-person registration, would be falsely presented with only 500 completed registrations,” the statement said. The PDP said such contradictions “directly insult the intelligence of the electorate and dangerously undermine confidence in the commission’s preparedness for the 2026 governorship election and the 2027 general election”. The party demanded that INEC correct the “manipulated data”, publish the authentic figure of more than 25,000 completed registrations, and explain the gulf between field records and the national report. “Anything short of this is nothing but a calculated attempt to disenfranchise Osun citizens and lay a foundation for electoral fraud, which our party and the people will never tolerate,” the statement added. The PDP also called on INEC to provide daily reports of completed registrations, including voter card transfers, to political party representatives and civil society organisations, and to open the process to independent scrutiny. It further demanded that INEC disclose records of voter card transfers within or into Osun State, warning that without such transparency, the process would remain vulnerable to manipulation and abuse. “Our democracy demands openness, and Osun PDP will continue to insist on transparency in the voter registration process as the foundation of credible elections,” the party stated https://dailypost.ng/2025/09/04/cvr-osun-pdp-demands-transparency-queries-inec-figures/ |
