PoliticsRe: Olympics ‘Bicycle’ Comment Shows Peter Obi Is NOT Presidential Material by Bobloco: 6:02pm On Aug 13, 2024
Kemetian:
The Nigerian cyclist was called in at the last minute to contest a road cycling race, after an Egyptian cyclist was disqualified.

Team Nigeria contested only in the track cycling races, and therefore only went to Paris with track-purpose bicycles.

The road race bicycles cost up to $40,000 each, and of course were not required by Team Nigeria.

So when the Nigerian girl was asked to do the road race at short notice, she borrowed a road race bicycle from the German team, which was there for track and road racing events.

SOMEHOW, THIS INCIDENT turned into a social media STORM in which the Nigerian government was abused and insulted by the usual suspects - Emergency Nigerians - for the ‘’embarrassment of having to borrow a common bicycle” from other countries, which showed the depth of incompetence and corruption of the government.

SO-CALLED ‘PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE’ PETER OBI, whom you would expect, as a presidential material, to INVESTIGATE the incident prior to issuing public statements on it, simply CONSUMED the social media propaganda of his fellow Emergency Nigerians, and LAMBASTED the government publicly for “borrowing a bicycle” at the Olympics, condemning their “rascality”, “corruption”, and “incompetence”.

This shows that PETER OBI lacks the intelligence, judgement, discipline, and composure to be the PRESIDENT of the biggest and most powerful black nation on Earth.

He must not be elected to such an important office.

PoliticsYakasai, Yadudu Caution Tinubu On Calls For New Constitution by Bobloco(op): 7:30am On Aug 13, 2024
Diverse reactions have emerged following a proposal by The Patriots, a group led by Chief Emeka Anyaoku, urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to initiate the process of drafting a new constitution through a national constituent assembly.

The group, which met with President Tinubu last week, advocated for an executive bill to be sent to the National Assembly to commence this process. However, the president, while acknowledging their recommendations, told them that retooling the economy for sustainable growth and development is the major priority of his administration.

In his reaction on Monday, elder statesman, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, who is also a member of The Patriots, urged the president to proceed cautiously.

Yakasai, in a statement, emphasised the importance of broad consultations and careful consideration, warning that neglecting these steps could lead to national chaos and instability.

He expressed concern that “due process was not followed in articulating the views presented to the president,” stressing that a matter of such national significance demands inclusive deliberation and consensus among all founding members.

Yakasai argued that excluding key voices undermines the credibility and unity of the mission, insisting that decisions of this magnitude must be rooted in collective wisdom rather than rushed actions.

He further aligned with former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s view that Nigeria’s core issue is not the constitution itself but the character and attitude of those who operate it. He asserted that without a change in the mindset and conduct of the country’s leaders, even the most well-crafted constitution would fail to bring about the desired progress and stability.

He advised that efforts should be directed towards promoting ethical leadership, accountability, and civic responsibility among those in governance. According to him, only by addressing these fundamental issues can Nigeria hope to create a society that truly reflects the aspirations of its people.

Renowned constitutional lawyer, Professor Auwalu Yadudu also expressed reservations about the call for a new constitution. He cautioned that any reworking of the fundamental document and restructuring of the polity must conform to constitutional processes to be legitimate. He warned that deviating from this path could lead to chaos and disorder.

Yadudu, in a chat with Daily Trust, elaborated that Nigeria’s problem is not about the nature of its constitution but the operators who implement it. He argued that for any changes to be legitimate, they must be made within the existing legal and constitutional framework. Any other approach, he suggested, would be suspect and contrary to the grundnorm, making it illegitimate.

He also questioned the legal and democratic legitimacy of The Patriots, asking where they derive the authority to dictate to the broader population on constitutional changes. Yadudu underscored that nation-building is an ongoing process and that while restructuring and amending the constitution are necessary, they must be done through proper channels.

Another elder statesman from the North, who preferred to remain anonymous, alleged that the leader of The Patriots might be trying to achieve Biafra through the back door. He questioned the rationale behind calling for a referendum in a country with a population of over 200 million, accusing the group of seeking to incite a crisis and take advantage of the current economic situation.

He described the proposal for a new constitution as disruptive, adding that it is an attempt to exacerbate existing tensions.

He argued that The Patriots are seeking national leadership without a mandate from the Nigerian people and challenged them to pursue their goals through political parties as elected leaders.

Ohanaeze opposes fresh national conference, insists on new constitution

Meanwhile, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the apex socio-cultural organisation representing Igbo communities, rejected the call for a National Constituent Assembly to address issues within the 1999 Constitution. Instead, they supported calls for a new constitution and the implementation of the 2014 National Conference recommendations and the 2005 National Political Conference, which advocated for additional states in the Southeast region.

In a statement signed by its Secretary General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and made available to Daily Trust yesterday, Ohanaeze argued that the current constitution is inadequate for addressing the demands of Nigeria’s diverse society. They urged President Tinubu to prioritise the implementation of the 2014 National Conference recommendations, which they believe will foster unity and progress.

Isiguzoro emphasised that convening another national conference would be ill-timed and insensitive given the country’s economic challenges. He called for a new constitution that addresses the flaws of the current military-imposed 1999 Constitution, which he said lacks the clarity and strength to meet the needs of Nigeria’s pluralistic society.

Middle Belt Forum supports new constitution

Dr. Bitrus Pogu, President of the Middle Belt Forum (MBF), expressed support for the demand by The Patriots for a truly people-driven constitution. He urged President Tinubu to muster the political will to deliver a new constitution for Nigeria, arguing that the current system has created numerous problems, particularly due to the centralisation of power.

Pogu recalled the functionality of Nigeria’s regional system in the past, where native authorities and regional governance structures worked effectively. He advocated for a return to a constitution similar to the 1963 version but with adjustments to address the current realities and anomalies.

He insisted that a new constitution, potentially derived from the 2014 Confab report, would better position Nigeria to address its challenges and allow each region to develop at its own pace. Pogu also suggested that the president could facilitate this process by calling for a referendum.

Afenifere deliberates

Meanwhile, Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation loyal to its acting leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, was in a meeting to deliberate on the proposal by The Patriots at the time of filing this report.

The group’s spokesman, Prince Justice Faloye, promised to provide a formal position after their discussions.

PoliticsDistress As Harsh Economy Forces Shutdown Of Over 50 Firms by Bobloco(op): 6:05am On Aug 13, 2024
…80% others in low-capacity utilization
…Over 100,000 employees thrown into the job market
…Labour begs FG to intervene

LAGOS — Over 50 firms in the chemical and non-metallic products sub-sector of the nation’s economy are in a dilemma as multinationals, medium and small-scale enterprises, SMEs, and member companies are either exiting, on the verge of shutting down or operating at low-capacity utilisation.

It will be recalled that the employers, under the umbrella of the Chemical and Non-Metallic Products Employers Federation, CANMPEF, had a membership strength of no fewer than 100 firms,, comprising multinationals, medium, and small businesses, which employ about 350,000 people across the country.

But presently, Vanguard checks revealed that while over 50 of such companies have closed down, four are on the verge of shutting down, while 80 per cent of the remaining companies are operating at low-capacity utilization.

Industry sources told Vanguard that over 100,000 workers have lost their jobs directly and indirectly in the last year.

The firms in this sector produce medicals, pharmaceuticals, perfumes, cosmetics, toiletries, soaps, detergents and vegetable oil, hydraulics, cement, asbestos cement and concrete.

Other products include glass, ceramic, earthenware, clay products, basic industrial organic and inorganic chemicals, fertilizers, explosives, fireworks, footwear, leather, and rubber.

According to Vanguard’s checks, among the companies that have shut down are Glaxo SmithKline Beecham, Procter & Gamble, Mega Plastic Nig limited, Twinstar Nig limited, and Femina Hygienical Products Nig. Limited and Linda Manufacturing Company.

Those on the verge of shutting down include Unilever, PZ Industries, Prime Pack, and Reckitt & Benckiser.

One of the companies about to shut operations in Nigeria is Kimberly-Clark because of high energy costs, expensive raw materials, and reduced customer demand.

The company, it was gathered, has reduced shifts and implemented other cost-cutting measures in a bid to remain afloat.

The company’s $100 million factory, located in Ikorodu, Lagos State, was commissioned two years ago by former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to produce diapers and sanitary pads, among others.

Firms lament
Lamenting the plight of the sector, Executive Secretary of CANMPEF, Mr Olorunfemi Oke, said the exits were painful, saying more worrying is the fact that challenges faced in the sector were inflicted by government policies.

According to him, the challenges confronting the sector are floating of the naira, depreciating currency and volatile exchange rate, fuel subsidy removal, high exchange rate for computation of import duty, high interest rate, epileptic power supply with the recent increase in tariff that has tripled electricity bills and made it unsustainable for businesses; and inadequate gas supply for firms, and high cost of diesel.

He also named poor road conditions, multiple taxations, a high inflation rate of over 34 per cent, weak consumer purchasing power, and insecurity across the country.

The executive secretary said: “The effects of the socio-economic challenges on the manufacturing companies are enormous. Most of our member companies are just managing to survive. We cannot access forex for purchase of raw materials and machinery.

“High import duty cost is discouraging importation of raw materials and machinery. High energy costs have resulted in high production costs. Unreliable power and gas supply disrupts production schedules and increases operation costs.

“We are experiencing high reduction in capacity utilization and increased production slowdowns, huge foreign exchange losses suffered by many member companies, especially the multinationals, and reduction of profit. Majority are recording losses.

“There is also declining market share and growth potential and inability to compete with imported products. High interest rates discourages business expansion. There is growing weakness in consumer purchasing power. Companies are shutting down some of their operations. This has led to retrenchment of employees. The hyperinflation has led to an increase in the cost of living of employees and an adversarial industrial relations climate in the sector.

Shutdown
“While I don’t want to sound alarmist, tens of member companies from the multinationals, medium and small scale companies have shut down. Some of the companies that have closed down are Glaxo SmithKline Beecham, Procter & Gamble, Mega Plastic Nig Limited, Twinstar Nig Limited, Femina Hygienical Products Nig Limited, and Linda Manufacturing Company. Similarly, among those on the verge of shutting down include Unilever and PZ industries.
‘’We are very pained by these developments. Let us take for example the case of Linda Manufacturing Company and Kimberly-Clark.

Linda Manufacturing Company which was producing synthetic hair attachments and other accessories was employing and keeping our young girls off the streets and criminality. Only God knows what these young girls will turn to now that they are out of jobs. And for Kimberley Clark which produces Huggies diapers, and sanitary pads, with the imminent shutdown of its Ikorodu production facility two years after investing $100 million in Nigeria. Remember that the former Vice President, Yemi Osibanjo commissioned the factory two years ago.

The company has been producing below-installed capacity since late 2023 because of the harsh economic environment in the country. If this company is allowed to exit Nigeria, it will add to the sad story of the worsening crisis in our sector. The pathetic situation of this firm is that in 2022, the company commissioned a $100 million production factory in Ikorodu, Lagos State which was inaugurated by then vice president to resume operations after an earlier closure of operations in 2019 following a review of its business. Apart from these woes, 80 per cent of the remaining member companies are operating at low-capacity utilization.

Job losses
While Mr Oke was not forthcoming on the number of job losses, Vanguard, however, gathered that no fewer than 100,000 Nigerians have lost their jobs in the sector.

Speaking further, he said: “As a Nigerian, it is sad and frustrating for me to talk about my fellow countrymen and women losing their means of livelihood in this manner.

‘’A lot of people have been thrown into the job market. The figure is huge. We are talking about direct and indirect employment, comprising suppliers, distributors, drivers, contractors, and traders among others. I do not want to give a figure. But I can tell you without mincing words that it is huge.”

Way forward
The CANMPEF scribe called on government to address challenges facing the sector by “giving concessions on the allocation of forex to the manufacturing companies, reduction of import duties for raw materials for an essential sector like the pharmaceutical industry, reduction in import duty charges, improving supply of energy and gas to manufacturers, reduction of the rate of energy charges by power distribution companies, DISCOs, stopping multiple taxes by the local, states and federal government agencies, signing and implementing the new national minimum wage bill to improve consumers’ purchasing power, focusing on rehabilitating selected roads to reduce logistics costs and fixing the nation’s refineries to enable access to petroleum bi-products that serves as raw materials for the chemical industries.

“The industry is import- dependent because of the nature of its products and its raw materials are chemicals majorly from the petro- chemical industries. ‘’The Federal Government should take urgent action to stop manufacturing companies from shutting down.

Government should support the companies to thrive and increase employment and reduce insecurity challenges in the country.

“The only member companies that seem to be doing well today are the cement manufacturing firms because of road constructions and other related businesses.”

Voda Paint MD reacts
Also speaking, the Managing Director, Voda Paints Limited, Mr Rotimi Aluko, blamed unreliable power, unstable currency, difficulty doing business, steadily rising inflation, insecurity, multiple taxation, and poor infrastructure, among others.

Aluko, who is also the Vice President of CANMPEF, said: “Like most of the sectors making up the Nigerian industrial landscape, the chemical, leather, food sectors are all struggling to survive economic hardship that, looking back now, has actually been long coming.

‘’It is, indeed, very hard to find any one sector of the economy that is not impacted by the numerous issues which those doing business in Nigeria have really been enduring, starting with unreliable power, unstable currency, difficulty doing business, steadily rising inflation, insecurity, multiple taxation, poor infrastructure, etc.

“Currency tweaking and the associated policies in concert with the removal of petrol subsidy and the floating of the naira, have helped to compound the pressure on industrial operations generally.

“The consequence on the consumers is depletion of disposable income, such that most households are in tight adjustment as their income is hardly coping with necessities.

“Most industries rely on bountiful discretionary income to survive. That is the crux of the pain in the sector. Demand has significantly dropped and so goes production and ultimately income.

“It is, indeed, very tough, especially for sectors outside of households’ eessential or committed expenses.

‘’Even those in essential expenses column are grappling with the consequences of reduced demand, owing to downward adjustments by consumers of quantities and quality of their purchases as a result of inflation-driven loss of purchasing power.

Survival mode
“I think how the sectors have been coping can easily be deduced from all the aforesaid; we are in survival mode. Sacrifice, cost-cutting as much as feasible, mounting bills, income stagnation, abandonment of key projects, reduced hours of operation/attendance rotation, etc. Everyone is scratching the ground as well as their heads for whatever will aid to keep them afloat.

Way forward
On ways out of the challenges, Aluko said: “Government action. It is all down to what the government chooses to do and not do. The truth starts with how the government views and treats manufacturing. If manufacturing is taken as the most strategic value-adding local content economic weapon that it is, Nigeria will transform into the league of leading nations of the world!

“Not even crude oil can come close. Why? It is manufacturing that can harness our immense reservoir of human talents to serve as an engine for the conversion of the bountiful contents atop and beneath our God-given land and those beyond our shores into products capable of becoming the biggest foreign exchange earners as experienced by China and several other Asian economies.

“Government just has to step forward to help get the necessary building blocks in place and put right the business environment, such that Nigeria will rank high among nations having very attractive level of ease of doing business.

“For this to be, the government has to make these investments and protect local manufacturing. This is non-negotiable. All advanced nations and those who have climbed up to join the top league did it at one point or another and are still doing it.

“The most powerful economic and military power in the world is currently engaged with China openly as an example.

“We have done it before with huge success when in 2007, Nigeria clamped down on the importation of cement by companies without local cement manufacturing investment. The result is huge.

“Before the implementation of the smart act of protection, Nigeria in 48 years of cement manufacturing preceding the protective action, only grew to about seven million metric tonnes of cement production per annum and in the 15 years succeeding the policy, has grown to over 60 million metric tonnes production/per annum.

“Do that across several sectors integrating farm produce conversion, petrochemicals, basic chemicals, natural resources, basic tools, electronics, etc, Nigeria will be an unstoppable giant. It has potentials.

“The government should declare a clear form of emergency in the manufacturing sector. It should subsidise consumption via manufacturing subsidy by way of tax relief, duty/tariff removal on agricultural and manufacturing inputs. The gains will come in many folds.

“First of all, our youths will be gainfully employed and stop idling away their lives or hawking things they should be producing in the first instance. Savings on social and security costs cannot be estimated.

“Government should put in place necessary administrative and legal firewalls against those who might truncate gains of the strive towards the achievement of good level ease of doing business across the country and sectors.”

Labour begs FG to intervene
On his part, the National Secretary, National Union of Chemical Footwear Rubber Leather and Non-Metallic Products Employees, NUCFRLANMPE, Joseph Dada, pleaded with the government to intervene immediately to save the sector from imminent collapse. He said: “Our industrial sector has been finding it extremely difficult to operate smoothly and effectively for the past two years.

‘’Bad government policies have negatively affected the running of our sector. Many of the industries have relocated to other African countries where they can do their business with ease and maximise profit.

“Our government, through the Central Bank, has increased the lending rate to over 30 per cent, which is not good for manufacturing and chemical industries to break even as most raw materials are imported. We cannot do backward integration.

Economic distortions
“The industries are groaning under the outrageous tariffs imposed by DISCOs and others responsible for the supply and distribution of electricity to the industries in Nigeria.

The tariffs are doing nothing other than kill the industries. This is compounded by the removal of the petrol subsidy that has turned the country upside down since last year. The consequences are part of the socio-economic distortions plaguing the nation.

“Some of the companies that have relocated to other African countries are multinationals, such as Procter & Gamble and GSK Pharma, Femina Hygiene, and Twinstar. Many others are on the verge of closing down any moment from now because of the unfavourable economic policies of our government.

“Hundreds of workers have lost their jobs as a result of management’s inability to provide raw materials in their various companies. Those that are managing to produce are producing below 20 to 25 per cent of installed capacities.

‘’We are still compiling the list of job losses. I can tell you it is mind-boggling in a country with very high unemployment figure.

Enabling environment
“We are pleading with the Federal Government to urgently halt this alarming trend and create enabling environment for industries to have access to foreign exchange from Central Bank of Nigeria for manufacturers to get forex to import raw material for industries to produce.

“The issue of unsustainable tariffs as well high cost of fuel regime must be addressed immediately to save our industries from total collapse. We are not equally unaware of the issues of excessive and multiple taxation from all levels of government, insecurity, poor state of our roads and very low purchasing power of most Nigerians. The government should come to our aid as renewed hope is gradually turning to sustained despair.”

PoliticsEnd Blame Game, Halt Bad Policies – Labour, Obi, Lukman Tell Tinubu by Bobloco(op): 3:50pm On Aug 12, 2024
ABUJA — THE Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, yesterday asked President Bola Tinubu’s administration to stop the blame game, reverse his policies that have caused hardship to Nigerians and engage in meaningful dialogue with relevant stakeholders.

Similarly, the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, LP, in the 2023 poll, Mr. Peter Obi, said the nationwide protests, which ended on Saturday, were a call on Nigeria’s leaders to reflect deeply on the growing poverty in the country and take steps to address it.

Former National Vice Chairman, North-West, of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Salihu Lukman, spoke in the same vein, describing the nationwide protests against hunger and bad governance as sufficient grounds for impeachment of the President and some state governors.

The NLC also alleged that since President Tinubu took over the reins of power, he had engaged in harassment and intimidation of labour leaders, adding that the recent invasion of its headquarters was to provoke the labour movement.

These, among others, were contained in a communique issued at the end of the emergency National Executive Council, NEC, meeting of the NLC held at the weekend.

In the communique, by NLC President Mr. Joe Ajaero, NEC reaffirmed the Congress’ commitment to defending the rights and welfare of Nigerian workers, saying it would not hesitate to take all necessary actions to ensure their safety and well-being.

Labour communique

The communique read: “The National Executive Council, NEC, of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, convened an emergency meeting on Saturday, August 10, 2024, to address the invasion of the NLC National headquarters by security apparatchik of the Federal Government.

“An invasion of the national secretariat immediately after the holding of the NEC’s emergency meeting of 7th to discuss the welfare of workers and Nigerians in the midst of the #EndbadGovernance Protest in which far reaching decisions were taken was considered deeply worrisome.

“This unprecedented action by government has raised serious concerns about the safety and security of Nigerian workers, as well as protection of trade union rights as enshrined in ILO Conventions 87 and 98, and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The NEC-in-session observed that since the current administration took office, there has been a pattern of intimidation, brutality, and deceit against the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Nigerian people.

“The government’s actions began with the President’s May 29, 2023, statement declaring the removal of subsidy, followed by efforts to suppress NLC’s opposition through threats, divisive propaganda, and unfulfilled promises to alleviate the country’s hardships. It has been a trail of systematic intimidation and violence against trade unions and their leaders.

“The National Executive Council, NEC, of the NLC recalled several instances of violence, including the brutal abduction and assault of the NLC President and other leaders in Owerri, Imo State, and the failure to prosecute the perpetrators.

“The government has also used legal injunctions, military force, and police intimidation to obstruct the NLC’s constitutional activities, including peaceful protests by affiliate unions, SSANU and NASU. The NEC condemned the criminalization of dissenting views, noting that some labour leaders are still detained because of the protests.

“Additionally, NEC highlighted the recent invasion of NLC headquarters, following a biased letter from the Registrar of Trade Unions, as part of a coordinated attack to silence the NLC, which has become the last stronghold of popular voice in Nigeria.”

The communique further stated that after extensive deliberations, the NEC-in-session, demanded safety and security guarantees.

It stated further: “The NEC calls on the government to guarantee the safety and security of all Nigerian workers, trade unions, and the NLC and TUC to operate freely in the country without fear of harm or violence.

“The NLC was not part of the recent democratic protests, which were a response to widespread hardship in the country. We demand that government withdraws its agents from all premises they have illegally occupied, particularly the headquarters of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, in Abuja and Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, RTEAN, in Lagos.”

It also rejected Police explanation for the invasion of its headquarters.

“The NEC-in-session rejects outrightly the explanation offered by the Police as a reason for the invasion. It described it as rather an afterthought and an attempt to cover the hidden motives behind such action as it raises more questions than answers. It therefore demands clear explanation from Government as quick as possible,” it said.

On the end to violence and harassment of protesters, the NLC stated: “The NEC once again condemns the killing of innocent protesters who were peacefully expressing their grievances against the harsh policies of the government.

“We demand an immediate cessation of these attacks and call on the government to declare a National Day of Mourning for those who lost their lives and properties during the protests. Additionally, all security agencies responsible for these tragic deaths must be held accountable, especially the Police.”

It also called for the immediate release of detainees and trade unionists arrested either in their homes or relaxation joints, saying “This is the only way the government can show good faith and begin the healing of the nation.”

On harassment of those holding opposing ideologies, the NLC condemned plans to frame up innocent citizens on trumped-up charges.

It said: “We must understand that this is not the first protest in Nigeria and would not be the last. NEC wonders why this administration is criminalizing protest and has renewed clamp down on Marxists, socialists and those who hold different shades of leftist ideologies as if courting a neoliberal dictatorship.

“NEC calls on government to convene an inclusive stakeholders’ conclave to discuss pressing issues confronting Nigeria and chart a path forward that addresses root causes of the current unrest—hunger, poverty, inflation, insecurity and widespread dissatisfaction with government policies.

“NEC calls on government to stop the blame game and instead, engage in meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders to find lasting solutions to the nation’s challenges.

“This invasion is another attempt at intimidation, thus may be a clear indication of the desperation within government to silence dissent through force. NEC warns that peace without justice is transient and unsustainable.

“NEC urges the President to take decisive action by addressing the systemic issues of profligacy, waste, and mismanagement that have exacerbated the suffering of Nigerian people.

“The government must listen to the voices of reason, embrace truth, and pursue a holistic overhaul of its policies. This includes distancing itself from divisive rhetoric and instead promoting national unity and restructuring.”

While demanding an immediate apology from the government, NLC stated: “NEC consequently demands apology from the Police and the Federal Government on this unwarranted invasion and desecration of the headquarters of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC.”

The NEC-in-session directed the leadership to hold a press conference soonest to addres
s all the issues, while also calling for a forensic security audit of NLC headquarters.
“To this end, NEC-in-session sets up necessary machinery to conduct a forensic audit of the national headquarters to ascertain its safety and continued suitability for the use of workers.

“Until this is done, NEC directs temporary cessation of use of the headquarters to mitigate every unforeseen disaster that may have been intended.

“However, NEC believes that the invasion by the Police is a deliberate provocation by government and as such, will not allow itself to act out of anger but to exercise caution for the greater sake of our nation.

“NEC reaffirms NLC’s commitment to defending the rights and welfare of Nigerian workers and will not hesitate to take all necessary actions to ensure their safety and well-being.”

Protests call for leadership action against growing poverty — Obi
Also yesterday Mr. Peter Obi, said the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests which ended on Saturday, was a call on Nigeria leaders to reflect deeply on the growing poverty in the country and take steps to address it.

Writing on his X handle yesterday, the LP flagbearer said: “With the #EndBadGovernance protests officially concluded yesterday, I want to once again express my deepest condolences to all who have lost their lives, including the security personnel, during these protests.

“These individuals gave their lives while advocating better governance in our nation. I extend my heartfelt sympathies to all the families who have suffered losses in this struggle. We all share in your grief, as we work together for the betterment of our country.

“May we all find the strength to endure this irreplaceable loss. To those who are wounded and recovering in hospitals and at home, know that our thoughts and prayers are with you for a swift recovery. Your sacrifices for our nation’s cause are deeply appreciated.

“I also want to take this moment to urge all leaders to reflect on the cries of the suffering people and address their legitimate demands. It is crucial for us, the leaders, to urgently address issues that sparked and fueled these protests.’’

Hunger protests, enough grounds to impeach Tinubu, govs —Lukman
Also, Salihu Lukman has described the recent nationwide protests against hunger and bad governance as sufficient grounds for the impeachment of President Bola Tinubu and some state governors.

In a statement in Abuja yesterday, Lukman said due to the mishandling of the protests by the Tinubu administration, there was information suggesting that the organizers had announced October 1 as the date for the resumption of the protests.

He said a situation where the government resorted to cheap campaign of blackmails with the argument of opposition sponsoring the protests should simply be ignored.

“In any event, it is legitimate for the opposition to start working for the defeat of a ruling party once they are unable to justify the confidence of the electorate.

“In fact, ideally, if democratic structures of the country were functionally working, such as political parties and the National Assembly, with what is going on in the country, President Tinubu and many state governors are candidates for immediate impeachment.

“The comatose reality, which has reduced the National Assembly to a rubber stamp, with political parties that are nothing more than leprous fingers, is responsible for the current high levels of frustration and desperation of Nigerians to register their anger through protests.

‘’Combined with a reality where INEC seems to be unwilling to discharge its statutory responsibility of registering new parties that could produce veritable options for legitimate leadership contests in the country, all hopes of democratic change of leadership in the country are fading away,” Lukman declared.

He said with governments at all levels failing to engage the organizers, practically underestimating the capacity of the organizers to mobilize for the protests, ordinary citizens were left at the mercy of angry Nigerians.

According to him, the trigger for Nigeria’s current situation is the withdrawal of subsidy on petroleum products and floating of the exchange rate of the naira against other international currencies.

He said: “For an import-dependent economy, it is predictable that the two policies will produce inflationary pressure.

“Unfortunately, so far, the government of President Bola Tinubu is unable to produce any clear definitive policy response to the situation. All citizens hear government say is calling on citizens to be patient without outlining how long it will take for the harsh reality to abate.

“Meanwhile, daily, Nigerians confront challenges of hunger and threats to daily survival. Many citizens die prematurely on account of hunger and preventable diseases.

‘’While acknowledging government’s explanations about how bad the economy has been mismanaged by previous administrations, it must be stressed that being an elected government, Nigerian political leaders should be more responsive.

‘’The minimum should be to acknowledge the reality facing citizens and demonstrate some measure of compassion and seek to ameliorate the harsh conditions facing citizens by relaxing some of these policies.

‘’Instead, painfully, elected leaders, including President Tinubu, are grandstanding, behaving basically as colonial overloads who have conquered Nigerians. With a conquest mentality, our leaders have proceeded to demobilize virtually all political structures in the country such that today Nigeria has earned the bad reputation of being a democracy without any functional political party.

‘’All the registered political parties are nothing but legal entities that only present candidates for elections. Partly, because of that reality, there is none of the parties that is able to recruit the leaders of the #EndBadGovernance protest or at least publicly join the protest.

‘’Although individuals such as Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and Mr. Peter Obi have declared support for the protest, they were unable to contract any strong relationship with the protest organisers.

“So long as political leaders and political parties in the country will be unable to contract strong relationships with veritable and energetic constituencies such as the #EndBadGovernance protest organizers, Nigeria’s democracy is imperilled,’’ he declared.
