Despite having the highest number of employees as of last year, LASG also had the lowest amount owed to pension. That's a testament to the consistency of the previous governors and, of course, continuity.
It doesn't answer the question

I ask again, why should payment of salaries and pensions be regarded as an achievement?

PoliticsRe: There Are Over 277 Guns Around National Assembly – Senator Jimoh Ibrahim by Bobloco(op):
Is Mr. Senator afraid?

But he should know that all political power comes from the barrel of a gun.
PoliticsThere Are Over 277 Guns Around National Assembly – Senator Jimoh Ibrahim by Bobloco(op): 5:22am On Jul 04, 2024
"As I am here, I check my phone regularly and I know the number of guns that are very close to me here. This is just less than one thousand installations. Within us now, there are over 277 guns around here just because an armoury is close to this place."

The senator representing Ondo South Senatorial District, Jimoh Ibrahim, has said there are over 277 guns within the National Assembly and the Presidential Villa.

Mr Ibrahim disclosed this during the plenary on Wednesday when he was contributing to a motion sponsored by the Senate Chief Whip, Ali Ndume, on the recent bombings in Gwoza town of Borno State.

The senator explained that he has an application on his mobile phone which can detect the number of guns within his jurisdictions.

He did not, however, mention those bearing the guns.

“I don’t want to take much of your time but I will say clearly it costs nothing for the intelligent army to get devices in their phone to know where these notorious criminals live.

“As I am here, I check my phone regularly and I know the number of guns that are very close to me here. This is just less than one thousand installations. Within us now, there are over 277 guns around here just because an armoury is close to this place,”
he said.

He advised the Nigerian military to adopt the use of technology rather than deploying officers to crime scenes.

“So, what I am saying is, with technology, just like distinguished Senator Ndume had said, to deploy technology rather than using soldiers.”

How to track guns with bullets
While Mr Ibrahim was speaking, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, interrupted him and asked how one could determine whether the detected guns had bullets.

“Do you know out of the 277 guns around you here now, do you know how many of them have bullets inside?” Mr Akpabio asked.

The senator laughed and said there was a probability that half of the guns would be equipped with bullets.

“Mr Senate President, we can actually do a probability, if we have 277 guns close to you within the radius of one kilometre, there is a probability that half of them have bullets and that is dangerous and we need to find out the source of those guns but because I can locate that the armoury close to us and very close to the villa , then I can understand that we are safe,” he said.

Conventional war
Mr Ibrahim, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) urged the military to prioritise the use of technology in tracking criminals and their hideouts.

“I want to say very clearly that the military should stop using unconventional strategies to fight insurgency in Nigeria. There is a distinction between unconventional and conventional strategy. We need to use conventional strategy to fight unconventional war. Boko Haram is an unconventional war.

“We are all aware of what happened in Kenya. We cannot close our eyes, we need to wake up. So, I will finally suggest to you, Mr Senate President and my distinguished colleagues that this Senate under your leadership must have a closed-door meeting for one day and then use that whole day to discuss security matters.

“Our lives are very important. Living with insecurity cannot be the only way to understand security, we should not get to that.

“How can you be going for a wedding and somebody just put a bomb to attack you and people started dying. It is uncalled for, it is rejected in totality of its formulation.”

The proliferation, circulation and trafficking of small arms and light weapons in the country in recent years are alarming. There have been killings in different regions of the country. Civilians and security operatives have been victims of these killings.

Foreign AffairsRishi Sunak Delivers Food To Voters Ahead Of July 4 UK Election by Bobloco(op): 2:35am On Jul 04, 2024
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has delivered food to the residents as part of last-minute efforts to woo voters in the national elections scheduled for Thursday, July 4.

A UK citizen, Katherine Forster expressed surprise to receive her egg muffin order delivered by Sunak.

The UK Prime Minister could be seen beaming with a wide smile at 6:20 a.m. on Tuesday.

Forster posted her brief encounter with the British PM on X where Sunak was criticised for using devious methods to sway voters less than 48 hours before election day.

“Had probably hundreds of McDonalds breakfasts in my life….not usually handed out by the Prime Minister though. 6.20am. Egg muffin. Wrap for him,” Forster wrote on X.

But instead of appealing to voters, Sunak’s act appeared to further piss off voters who described him “as training for his next job.”

According to a report, polls have not been favourable to Sunak as the most recent, Survation, predicted a landslide victory for Keir Starmer’s Labour Party as against Sunak’s Conservative Party which has led the House of Commons for the past 14 years.

Observers said Sunak’s Conservative Party may only clinch predicted 64 of 650 seats while Labour Party was projected to get 484 seats.

Sunak’s 18-month-stint as Prime Minister was characterised by an economic crisis, leading the majority of UK citizens to place their faith in opposition leader, Starmer.

PoliticsFG Suspends Approval For Construction Of New Roads by Bobloco(op): 5:00am On Jul 03, 2024
The Federal Government has suspended approval for the construction of new road networks across the country.

This was revealed by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, on Sunday in Calabar, when the Federal Ministry for Works convened a stakeholders engagement on the proposed alignment for sections 3A and design for about 97km Spur of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal highway project with a segment from Cross River State to South-East and North-Central part of Nigeria.

According to him, the decision was a result of a directive by President Bola Tinubu, adding that the ministry will be prioritising the completion of ongoing projects in the country in the 2025 budget.

He explained that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal highway has section 3A, about 38km, joining from the Akwa Ibom axis through Cross River State.

Umahi added that there will be a spur of the same coastal highway, about 92km in Cross River State, making it a total of 130km to be constructed within Cross River State.

According to him, the 92km spur in Cross River State will cross Enugu State, Ebonyi, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, Abuja, and Lagos states.

The minister frowned at the poor handling of the existing contract of Odukpani-Itu federal road, directing that the first warning will be issued to contractors to return to the site or risk revocation of their contracts.

On the Lagos – Calabar Coastal highway project, Umahi, described it as a significant initiative of President Tinubu aimed at enhancing connectivity and promoting economic growth along the coastal regions of Nigeria.

“Once completed, the highway is expected to facilitate smoother transportation of goods and people, boost trade activities, and spur regional development,” he said.

The former governor of Ebonyi State said the project is one of Tinubu’s legacies that would outlive his administration and many others to come.

On his part, Cross River Governor Bassey Otu pledged his commitment to supporting the successful execution of the coastal highway project.

He said it portends great economic benefits for the state as well as the southern and north-central regions of Nigeria.

Represented by the state’s Deputy Governor Peter Odey, the governor said his administration’s maximum cooperation and support towards the realisation of this crucial infrastructure development is inevitable.

According to him, the importance of a good road network to the economic development of the state, region, and nation at large cannot be overemphasised.

He directed the state commissioner for works to engage with the team from the Federal Ministry of Works, and to ensure that nothing inhibits the smooth execution of the project which is scheduled to begin in Calabar axis in August.

Odey also assured the minister of works that the state government had secured the needed state executive council approval to pay compensation to ease the right of way for the contractors handling the Odukpani–Itu federal highway.

PoliticsEconomy: Time For Talking Over For Tinubu - Punch Editorial by Bobloco(op): 4:44am On Jul 03, 2024
AFTER one year in the saddle, the time for talking and making promises about the economy is over for President Bola Tinubu. Now is the time to deliver on his avowal to strengthen and rebuild the economy through the private sector.

The Nigerian economy is battling stormy headwinds. Glaring hyperinflation, acute electricity shortages, high energy costs, steep debt servicing, chronic unemployment, divestment of multinationals, shabby infrastructure, and low wages feature prominently. Although Tinubu inherited most of them, he can revitalise the economy by significantly reducing the footprints of the government in business.

Hinting at an economic revamp by strengthening the organised private sector at the third edition of the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association summit in Abuja, the President reiterated that he has embarked on economic reforms since he assumed office.

In his Inaugural Speech, he cancelled petrol subsidies. Then, his administration merged the naira exchange rates. In April, the government cancelled subsidies for Band A electricity consumers.

Coincidentally, the reforms have not instigated economic revival. As the naira depreciates to record levels, energy costs have spiralled out of control. At 40.66 per cent, food inflation is at a 30-year high. The exchange rate is N1,500 per $1 from N464/$1 in May 2023. Nigerians do not feel the touted reforms.

Surprisingly, Tinubu, who comes from a private sector background, is falling back on the failed system of public control of the commanding heights of the economy. His predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, was unrepentantly statist and ruined the economy. Tinubu should discard this archaic economics.

Between 1979 and 1990, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher changed contemporary economics by privatising major public assets. These included British Steel, Rolls Royce, British Airways, Britoil, British Energy (nuclear), British Telecomm, British Gas and British Airport Authority.

So, it is naïve that Tinubu has failed to consolidate his initial reforms by unleashing the productive power of the private sector to rebuild the tattered economy. The fuel subsidy crisis arose principally because the four public refineries with a combined nameplate of 445,000 barrels per day were under government control. Two of them have missed several deadlines to re-commence fuel production.

Consequently, Nigeria depends naïvely on fuel imports though it is a major crude exporter. Olusegun Obasanjo privatised two of the refineries in 2007 before the dubious reversal by his successor, the late Umaru Yar’Adua.

Indeed, government ownership of business has delivered only corruption, inefficiencies, and cronyism. Nigeria spends $28 billion annually on fuel imports, per Blackgold Energy Authorities. Therefore, Tinubu should embark on the transparent privatisation of the refineries. This strengthens the OPS
.

All the 132 refineries in the US belong to private operators. In the UK, the six refineries are privately owned. It is a safe path for Nigeria. This will reignite Nigeria’s flagging foreign direct investment. At minus $187 million, it entered negative territories in 2022, per UNCTAD.

Nigeria has struggled vainly to kick-start its manufacturing sector since 1978 when it commissioned the Ajaokuta Steel Company. Imprudently, every administration prefers government ownership. Nothing has worked. Nigeria is losing money ($4 billion in annual steel imports) and jobs heavily. By selling Ajaokuta, Tinubu will boost the economy via the private sector.

The Bureau of Public Enterprises said Nigeria realised N550 billion from the privatisation and commercialisation of 142 public assets as of 2018. In the 18 years to 2018, the government realised $7.8 billion in FDI by selling 53 public assets. So, another path to reinforce the OPS is privatising the seaports, the airports, rails, and the Transmission Company of Nigeria.

Tinubu can elevate the economy by delivering on his tax reform plan. There are more than 60 tax heads. The plan is to reduce this to nine. This should be done expeditiously.

The government should divert the savings from privatisation to infrastructure and concentrate on security.
