Minimum Wage: Anambra, Imo, Zamfara, Benue, Kano, Kogi governors refuse to pay

Civil servants have accused Anambra, Imo, Zamfara, Benue, Kano, and Kogi governors of refusing to pay the new minimum wage.

The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) said 10 states had not implemented the National Minimum Wage signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari on April 18, 2019.

The association’s National President, Tommy Okon, disclosed this at a forum organised for the Labour Writers Association of Nigeria (LAWAN) on Thursday in Lagos.

The other states are Bauchi, Kebbi, Nasarawa, and Taraba.

According to him, some states have concluded negotiations but had yet to implement the new wage.

“Anambra and Taraba have concluded negotiations but have yet to implement; Bauchi, Benue, Kebbi, Kogi, Nasarawa, Kano, and Zamfara are in the negotiation stage,” said Mr Okon.

The labour leader added that negotiation had yet to start in Imo.

He urged the state governments to put the well-being of their workers into consideration.

The unionist also called for further upward review of salaries.

He also noted that governments should not renege on agreements reached with the organised labour for industrial peace and harmony to reign.

“Salaries are no longer to be negotiated,” he said.

Mr Okon called on the federal government to amend the 2014 Pension Act and expunge sections inimical to pensioners.

According to him, gratuity payment should be embedded in the act.

“There should be a provision to spell out that this act does not forbid the payment of gratuity by employers.

“The law should not be silent on important matters that affect life; gratuity affects life,” Okon explained.

I'm from Enugu but I was born in Onitsha.. primary and post primary education all in Onitsha , tertiary education in Awka. Even after graduation I'm still here in Awka contributing my little quota.

I do read about Enugu city on paper. Independence lay out, Ogui , Gariki, Abakpa , Emene or Agbani etc I have never been there... Only visit home during election, new yam festival, traditional or marriage ceremonies or Omabe/masquerade festival. Thanks to the university management demanding "local government identification letter" during registration as a freshman I wouldn't have known my local government headquarters.

So if you attack Enugu because I criticised the current administration in Anambra, I'll just ignore you because I've spent the larger part of my life in Anambra hence I don't have the weapon to counter the onslaught from your keyboard and as a law abiding citizen and a tax payer it is not illegal to criticize the government....

Yes as good works of the state govt are shown here. We won't also fail to show the bad sides of the state and how it affects everyday pple.

My friend kept lamenting on Saturday on d bad state of the state capital's internal roads used by motorists. She kept asking if things continue this way till d Yuletide season it won't be funny. Awka roads are bad and with the blocking of the police zone which happens to be d only sensible tarred road leading to major places in Awka. One would wonder if this id how life is going to be for those living in major towns who have to commute themselves to Awka everyday..not forgetting the increase in transport fare due to bad and untarred roads in d State capital.

The next govt needs to embark on massive road projects in d state and major routes leading to d capital should be disliked.
