TONYE001:
Hello Nairalanders, greetings to you all. How are you? I trust that everything is going on well with you all.

Today I would love us to talk about the role of the husband in pregnancy. I’ll be writing from MY experience as a husband to a pregnant wife.

Before we go on, below are some key points:

1. I’ll be writing from the perspective of a Christian though this piece is NOT limited to Christians,

2. I have arranged this work into three parts. Each part represents a trimester,

3. Parts II and III would come up later,

4. The intention of the writer is to share thoughts with fellow fathers-to-be (and fathers) as well as to educate the general public.

PART I

Amongst the numerous reasons for marriage is procreation. It is the dream of every man and woman to have a child (or children as the case may be). I remember those days when I was much younger. While my mates discussed football, wrestling and martial arts; while they concentrated on their careers and how to make millions in the future, I sat and fantasized on how to be a husband and a father at the earliest possible time. Not that I didn’t share the same interests as my friends but the fact is that, perhaps, there is nothing I want more than being a “family man”.

The statement, “darling, I’m pregnant”, often times, marks the beginning of the path of pregnancy. However, I think “WE are pregnant” is better because it makes obvious the fact that responsibilities in pregnancy are to be shared and not necessarily limited to the wife.

So, your darling wife is pregnant and there are celebrations everywhere. The atmosphere is saturated with celebrations and jubilations. Your shoulders are raised and your expectations are high; perhaps you may have bought the pregnancy test strips to confirm, confirm, and confirm again. Maybe you are itching to observe your first ultrasound scan to see your baby (or babies), to hear that tiny heart in your wife’s womb beat rapidly. You just can’t wait to hold your tender baby in your hands. I understand the joy because I’ve been there; it is truly a period of extended euphoria.

Fathers-to-be must note that pregnancy is a phase that one must pass through before the arrival of a child. There is no shortcut; it is impossible to jump from the time of conception to the time of delivery. Between these two defined times are lots of activities, lots of dos and lots of don’ts. If all the laws are abided by, it is almost certain that the end would draw smiles on your faces.

Certain changes in pregnant women are physiological and expected; some are temporal while others may be permanent. Let us see some of these changes:

CHANGES YOUR WIFE MAY UNDERGO WHILE SHE IS IN HER FIRST TRIMESTER

1. Tiredness: This is one of the first changes observed in pregnant women. This is physiological and psychological. Ordinarily, the presence of a foetus in your wife’s womb imposes stress on her body. The relationship between the mother and the foetus is analogous to what is observed in commensalism where one organism benefits from the other without causing harm to the host. The foetus relies on the mother for nutrition, defence (about 70-80%, or more), eradication of wastes, etc. This is an extra stress on the mother because her body, originally, is programmed to cater for itself alone but now, the game is changed as there is another entity within to provide for. Disturbances of the hormone, progesterone, during pregnancy is also associated with fatigue.

Your wife’s psychology may also be a contributing factor to her tiredness. She is aware she is pregnant. She thinks of the “pregnancy” and the associated risks, she thinks of the pains of labour. Never underestimate the things women hear and read when it comes to pregnancy. The information she is exposed to may instil fear in her and fear is stressful while stress is tiring!

2. Loss of Appetite: This could be frustrating to the husband. The things you know your wife likes, those things you always get her as you return home may become repulsive rather than appealing. My wife was a fan of gizzard. Gizzard was almost always present in our stews but now, things have changed. The sight of gizzard can kill her appetite for an entire day! Things are that bad.

3. Mood Swings: This is very important because if not well understood, it could cause problems in your home. Your wife may switch from one mood to the other in a matter of minutes. 10:51AM: Happy! grin 10:52AM: Unexplained sadness. sad 10:53AM: Angry! angry 10:54AM: Leave-me-alone! cool The list is endless.

4. Return of Appetite: Yea, you read that right. Mr. Appetite may actually return to the Kingdom of Pregnancy in this story. And this time around, he may come HEAVY. Later in the first trimester, your wife’s appetite may return. Sometimes, my wife eats her dinner in three phases – Dinner Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3. I’m not talking about multiple eating of small bits of food, no. That appetite scares me sometimes. grin

5. Food Craving: Of all the changes associated with pregnancy, I find this one the funniest. My mother-in-law once told me that in one of her pregnancies, she always traveled a journey of about 20 minutes in search of agidi. Funny, isn’t it? This is true in most pregnancies. Before now, my wife’s best soup was Afang Soup but now, she can go any extent to get her newly found love – Okra Soup! She doesn’t care about meat or fish. All she needs is her okra, palm oil and some spices and food is ready. She is that serious with the soup.

6. Sleep: The body refreshes itself when we sleep. You should expect a lot of this in the first trimester of your wife’s pregnancy especially if she has a lot of free times. I love to watch my wife sleep. Sometimes, I sit next to her and watch her thorax rise and fall in response to her breathing. How peaceful!

7. Restlessness: You may call this sleeplessness. Your pregnant wife may spend about an hour in search of a “comfortable sleep posture” as she rolls from one side of the bed to the other. Sometimes, her breathing may be disturbed too. This may be due to the fact that her consciousness may have taken over the autonomic control of her respiration. When we consciously breathe, it is almost impossible to conduct gaseous exchange at the right rate and amount. It is also tiring to consciously breathe in and out repeatedly. This is why respiration, majorly, is regulated at the autonomic level.

8. Weight Gain: Most times, there is a significant gain of weight in pregnancy. In the first trimester however, weight gain may not be obvious but this does not mean that it is absent. There is a visible enlargement of body components. Your wife’s habits and genetic composition may influence her weight gain.

There are many other changes that I may not have listed above. This is why you should comment and share your thoughts because the list of changes associated with pregnancy knows no end; it varies from woman to woman.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

As a husband of a pregnant wife, there are specific roles you must play. Your wife needs support – all kinds of support – and she needs it real bad! It is not enough to get her pregnant and wait for the day of delivery. An ideal husband is a husband that follows his wife through pregnancy, step by step and from stage to stage.

In my next post, I would take you on a ride through some important roles a husband must play in his wife’s pregnancy.

….to be continued.

From your posts, it is obvious that you adore your wife. She's the Centre of your Universe. God bless your home and God will help you keep being a good husband

Hello All,

Yesterday was my sweety's birthday so I made her this poem.... I just want to share this with you all...

Kindly read through it and drop your comments...

Thanks.. smiley

A welcoming sky sparks,
In the colours of the stars,
As a baby girl lands,
On the 13th of Decem-ba.

Oh! My baby is born,
In the twilight of the morn',
As promised by the Lord,
On the 13th of the last month.

In an angelic voice she cries,
Tears of purity flowing from her eyes,
Her pitched voice climbing so high,
On the 13th of the birth month of Christ.

Happy! Testimonies! We are blessed,
Excellent! Complete! I must con-fess,
Marvellous! Fabulous! I am im-pressed,
Décembre! Le numéro de treize.

This day, I'll forget not,
This month, I must not remember-not,
That year, I'll forget not,
December 13th, for 12th it is not.

God bless your home. Amen

...***...
“Sssh... I already have time, that’s why I’m here with you. Stop complaining.” Simon coaxed as he kissed her and dropped his bags.

“How long will you stay?” Jemima asked again.

“More than one week...”

“One week? Our daughter barely knows you. You don’t care to spend any time with her. Since you came, you haven’t even asked about her.” she had
started nagging.

“It’s just 10seconds now. I’m still carrying my bags. You welcomed me with. ‘HI. How long will you stay?’ you haven’t given me a chance to think about my other baby. Where’s is she by the way?” he asked gently.

“She’s sleeping.” Jemima answered.

“Good! So we have a lil’ time to ourselves.” He winked.

“I know what you mean and I’m not up to it. We have so much to talk about Simon. ”

Simon rolled his eyes. “I’m tired. I need to take a bath, eat and sleep.”
He gently pushed her away and walked further into his 2-bedroom apartment. He sighed as he undressed and entered into the shower.

“Did you listen to any of what I said?”

“Do you want to join me? There’s room.” Simon replied over the sound of the running water.

“How old are you, Simon?”

“I’m surprised you don’t know my age and you’ve known me for 6years, been in a relationship with me for 5 and half.” he said jokingly.

“No. Seriously, how old do you want to get? Lois is 2. It’s getting too long Simon--”

“Ok. Jemima! Can you stop this now? It drives me crazy.” He turned the shower off.

“I can’t stop talking about it. It’s all I think about. My family has been pressuring me about it. When are we getting married?!”

“Keep your voice down. You are going to wake Lois.” he whispered as if she hadn't just scolded him.

“Answer me.” Jemima said, more softly.

“I’m not ready to get married. That’s my answer. What more do you want to hear?” He turned the shower on again.

“Do you still love me?”

“There’s no doubt about it. You are the only one I want to be with forever.” Simon was serious.

“Why not just make it legal?” Jemima asked.

“That’s a show-off. We don’t need to show people how happy we are. Many married men are unhappy in their marriages. They keep cheating on their wives. I hear a lot of stories from the married men at work, talking about how they spend their nights in the arms of different women and they have wives at home. To be honest with you, I don’t want to follow that line.”

“You won’t. I know you. You’re such a good man. It won’t happen to us when we get married.”

“You already nag so much we are not even married and I’m sure it will get worse if I decide to get married to you."

“You haven't decided to marry me? Simon?" Jemima sounded hurt.

Simon stepped out of the shower in his birthday suit.

“Jemima, things are better this way. Let’s not complicate it by getting married. Evelyn has been your friend since high school and you are very sure you’d remain friends forever. Aren’t you?

“I am.” Jemima replied, stepping away from him.

“Would you ask her to sign a legal agreement to remain friends with you forever?”

“No.”

“Why? Cos you know you’d be together forever because you love each other so much. That also applies to us. Honey there’s just so many rules that marriage has. I’m sure I’d be with you forever. No need to tighten the belt. Just relax.”
He was still moving closer to her

Jemima smiled. She was very convinced Simon loved her.
“Honey, you are dripping water all over the floor.” Jemima said still backing away from him.

“The idea was to get you backed up against the wall, and it worked.”

Jemima realised there was no room behind her for further movement and Simon immediately placed his palms on the wall on either side of her.
“Cornered! “ he said as he kissed her and started nuzzling her neck.

JEMIMA
1
...***...
Jemima was tired, but she couldn’t stop walking. She had to pick her 2yr old daughter from school under the scorching sun. She had one more turn to take off the long street before she reached her daughter’s school. She had dialled Simon’s number severally but he had ended each call.
“Maybe he’s very busy.” She thought to herself. She hoped it was true. She had many things on her mind and Simon’s negligence wasn’t one of them. She reached the school gate just as the bell rang for the close of day. As she greeted the guards and walked towards the school building, her phone began to ring. She checked the caller I.D and was glad.
“Hi.” She said smiling.
“Hi.”
“Have you been busy?”
“Yes. Very. Where are you?”
“I’m at Lois’s school. I’m headed to her classroom now.”
“I miss her.” He sounded ready to end the call.
“She misses you too. I’m almost at her class, just wait.”
“Honey, I’m sorry. My boss needs me right now. I will call you ASAP. Okay?”
Jemima was almost out of breath when she got to her daughter’s class. “Speak with daddy. Daddy’s on the phone.”
“Mommy!!” Lois ignored the phone and hugged Jemima, almost strangling her with cherubic arms tightly wound around her neck.
“Bye. I’ll call later.” Simon said before ending the call. Jemima sighed, then kissed her daughter’s chubby cheeks, gently removing the arms that had imprisoned her neck.
“How was school today?” Jemima asked.
“Fine!” Lois snapped. She knew she had to say fine to questions asked like that even if she didn’t feel fine.
Jemima knew it was everything but fine for Lois who always cried whenever she was left behind at school every morning. Lois pointed at her bag and lunch box, signalling to her mom to get them, then headed out of the classroom. Jemima readily went straight to pick them up and followed her daughter who liked to lead the way home.
Parents were not usually allowed into the classrooms, except on special occasions, but Jemima was the only exception. Her friend, Christine , was the teacher of Lois’s class.
“How was Lois today? I hope she didn’t bully anyone.” Christine was smiling as if she had done something mischievous. “What have you done again?”
“Nothing. I saw somebody.” Christine replied in a high-pitched voice.
“Ohhh.. I know. Mike.” Jemima offered. “Thank God he has finally put you out--“
“Sssh! don’t say that name around me again.” Christine’s grin disappeared for a second then reappeared. “I saw something better. A handsome young and tall man. The proprietors’ son and he’s single.”
Jemima was shaking her head out of pity for her friend.
“Stop giving me that pity look. You found someone before me even though you are younger than me doesn’t mean I can’t find one. I’m 23. I’m still young.
“That’s not the look I’m giving you. I’m just surprised you still believe in happily-ever-after. You can get a better job elsewhere and a better man. I don’t know why you don’t want to leave this place.”
“Keep being a cynic. I’ll find my happily-ever-after.”
“Okay. Good luck to ya.” Jemima walked out of the classroom and was followed closely by Christine who usually escorted her to the school gate. As they walked along the corridor, she heard her daughter scream “daddy” and followed the sound, only to see Lois being reluctantly carried by a man who looked like Simon, but wasn’t exactly Simon.
“I’m so sorry.” Jemima said to the man and quickly pulled Lois from him. “Sweetie, that’s not your daddy.” The man still looked offended. “You look like her daddy. She’s just confused.” She smiled, hoping to lighten the mood.
“You need to refresh her memory. She’s losing him in her mind.” He countered.
Jemima was very sure the man meant it as an insult. “Well, I wanted to be running away with my daughter instead of standing here and apologising to a toxic man-child like you. She’s only 2 and you’re nervous. I wonder if you’ve met women your age.”
He was taken aback by her sudden change in attitude. She just smiled to him now and she had responded as he smacked her daughter. “If you or her mother had taught her to be a lady, maybe all these wouldn’t be happening.”
“If you’re going to talk this much, we won’t get on with our lives... Oooh. Maybe you don’t have a life. I have one, and I’m continuing with it.“ Jemima said as she walked out on him, with Lois in her arms and Christine in tow.
“Sorry for embarrassing you, Christine.” Jemima said, when they got to the playground.
“You have ruined what was supposed to be an introduction between my best friend and my future boyfriend, but, it’s Ok.”
“That’s him? The person you like? It’s so obvious you guys have nothing in common. It won’t work.” Jemima finalised.
“Easy there. I could see for myself. Man-child. Child-hater.” They both laughed as they walked towards the gate.

...***...
Tutu reached for her pocket. She brought out the portion of the newspaper showing Jesse's death remembrance, then tore it to shreds.

"What's that?” Jesse asked.
“it’s nothing.”
“Really?” he asked again.
“Do you have anything to tell me?” she asked.
He sighed. “I have many things to say and I think now is the best time to say them.”
She smiled encouragingly. “I’m listening.”
“I am dead. I mean I am supposed to be dead. At least that’s what everyone thinks. Except my family, of course. .. My dad was a former minister and you know how politics is in Nigeria, your family isn’t safe. After my accident, it wasn’t easy for me to survive the gunshot wounds. My death was faked to relieve my family of death threats cos there were many of it. My ex best friend had an affair with my girlfriend and soon to be wife.”

“Girlfriend.” Tutu arched an eyebrow and frowned.

Ëx-girlfriend.” Jesse smiled, reassuring her. She didn’t have much of my company like you. I don’t blame her for that, cos I was always too busy. Maybe I didn’t really love her enough or else, I would have found time to be with her. But then, I trusted my friend, so I put him in charge of Teju. I wanted him to take care of her,,.” He paused and smiled “…and he did just that. He was a friend I had helped in many ways and he betrayed me. I am so happy he did that. It just like testing before the real deal. You.” He smiled and kissed Tutu’s forehead. “It’s a lesson to never trust your friends with your bestfriends.”
“Is that why you haven’t introduced me t your friend? The one you said helped you?”Tutu wanted to really know. She had so many questions.
“There was really no friend helping me. I did these with the help of my parents and sister.” He smiled . “You should meet my sister”
“I can’t wait.” She smiled then she stopped smiling. “Continue your story.”
“Ok .so, one thing led to the other and they fell in love. She didn’t want me to know she had fallen out of love with me. She’s such a gentle dove.”
“Hmmn! Dove my ass.”
“What’s with you and the background voice you are giving to this story? Eh?..” he laughed. “She started giving me hints. Called me Oba instead of Jide. I laughed about it at first in Oba’s presence. He shrugged. I noticed there acted strange around when the three of us were together. I was also uncomfortable in their company…then that day happened. The day of my accident. He had made up his mind that killing me woiuld be the fastest way to be with her. And it was.”
“How did you know it was him?”
“I met them recently. Teju First. And she spilled her guts, like she always did. Then her husband, Oba, came.”
“Oh, they are married now?”
“Yes. There’s a baby on the way. Things have been tough for them and they thought confessing to me would make them better.”
“Things like what?”
“For starters, she has been pregnant for over a year—
Before he could finish what he was saying, Tutu burst out laughing.
“What? Don’t laugh.” he joined her then they stopped laughing.
“May God forgive us.” Then he asked more seriously, looking at her. “Tutu, when are we making our babies?”
Tutu stiffened. He felt it for his left shoulder was behind her right shoulder as they sat on the floor, backing the wall. He let it pass.
“I had to move away from my family, friends and home.”
It took a while for Tutu to realize he was still telling his story. She had been thinking about something else. The guilt she felt for letting Jesse believe she was pure and innocent and here he was, telling her the reasons for his actions. His actions hadn’t been selfish. He had done it to save his family and himself. He had stopped living the life he love and enjoyed just because he didn’t want any other member of his family to be really killed.
He smiled at the memory of something he had said, then continued. “…you make me want to risk everything. All the secrets my family and I have kept from the public. You make we want to take a risk with my—“
“Jide, there something I need to tell you.”
Jesse was scared. The laughter in his eyes was slowly disappearing. “What is it?” he quietly asked.
"I'm not a virgin." she blurted.
He laughed. “You think I haven‘t figured that out? What do you think I am? A baby?”
“But you believed me..but—“
“See, ehn babe, I let you think I believed. You wanted it that way, I had to respect it.” He winked.
“I don’t know what to say..” She suddenly felt self conscious.
He drew her closer and kissed her head. She shivered.
“Don’t worry. We will wait till after our wedding to consummate this relationship. If that’s how you want it.”
“How do you want it?” she teased.
“You are a bad girl. A very bad girl.” He shook his head in mock irritation, laughing with her.

…***…
KOSI’S WEDDING DAY.
After the pictures taken with the couple, Jesse drew Tutu away from the bridal train and whispered something to her. She laughed. Kosi was watching them with interest.
“Tutu!!” Kosi called.
“I’m coming.” She hurriedly whispered to Jesse and walked carefully to meet Kosi.
“I need to pee.” Kosi begged.
“Chief-Bridesmaid Mode activated. Let’s go.”
When they got to the restroom, Kosi turned around swiftly, almost pushing Tutu to the floor.
“What were you and ‘Jesus’ discussing that was making you laugh like that? He was filling you with the holyspirit abi?” “Kosi you are crazy.” Tutu joked. “So that’s why you called me here?”
“Yes. Oya tell me na. Pleeease.”
“Ok. He was talking about making today special for me but he was sure you would be mad and probably walk him out of your party. You wouldn’t want anyone to rain on your parade. It’s your wedding. Your special day.” Tutu smiled, lovingly.
“Aaaww. How did he know that? I like him for you o. He’s so good.”
Tutu wondered when Kosi decided to accept Jesse. Things were finally working out.

A few hours into the after party, Jesse held Tutu’s hands and dropped a purse on her laps.
“What’s that?”
“A purse, obviously.” He replied.
“Is this my gift?” she smiled, about to open it.
“Yes. But before you touch it, promise me you’ll accept it.”
“Why won’t I accept it. It’s a beautiful purse.” She tried to pull her hands out of his, but he didn’t budge.
“Promise me you’ll accept this purse.”
Tutu sighed. “OK. I promise. I will accept boss!” he released her hands grudgingly.
She went straight to open the beautiful gold purse. She paused. Tears of happiness welled up in her eyes. Jesse put a ring in it. Her hopes weren’t dashed. She was so happy.
“Oh..Jesse. I love you so much.. I can’t—express myself.” Her voice cracked and more tears welled up in her eyes as she hugged him.
“Jesse!! You have given me the perfect wedding gift.” Kosi shouted from where she was. She had been watching them all the while.
“And here she goes, ruining my proposal.” Jesse frowned jokingly at Kosi, then got on one knee and faced Tutu. “Honey, forget that your bestfriend is trying to rain on our parade by spoiling this proposal. Will you marry me Adetutu Adeniran?
She nodded. Her voice cracked.. “Yes I will. I love you now, forever and a day.
“I love you more than forever. I love you now, forever and a millennium.” He laughed.

THE END.

20...“Good morning ma. Please i want to say something.” Moji said as she entered Tutu’s office.
“What?” Tutu barked. It wasn’t enough that she came late to work, now she wanted Tutu’s attention.
“Sorry ma. Nothing ma.” Moji replied and rushed out of the office.
“Mtcheeeew!” Tutu hissed. She was mad at everything. She wasn’t in the mood for any of Moji’s latest gossips.
About 5minutes later, she had a loud crash outside her office. She rushed out quickly.
“Moji! What’s the problem?”
“Nothing ma.” She quickly tried to carry the table that fell.
Tutu wondered how the table happened to be on the floor. She looked up at Moji’s face.
Moji was trying effortlessly to wipe the tears streaming down her eyes. Tutu was worried she had never seen Moji in this condition before. She walked over to her and asked in a mild tone. “What’s the problem?”
“I don’t know how to put it to you ma. I can’t talk now.” Moji was shaking uncontrollably.
“OK. Later then.” she said as she walked back to her office. Tutu didn’t have the time to start grieving with her assistant over any issue that wasn’t her business. She had enough on her plate. She wanted to bury herself in work and not think about Jesse. Not think about how she had just lost a good man because she was too stupid and too weak to fend off Francis. Not think about how she was getting older and there was probably no man to show to her parents as her husband to be. She didn’t want to get more depressed. Life had been harsh.
Five minutes later, Moji opened the door without knocking, which was unusual.
“Tutu, i have to say this to you. I know it’s the wrong time, Kosi’s wedding and all, but just hear me out.” Moji blurted.
“Please, don’t tell me you want to resign.” Tutu begged cos it would be the worst period of Tutu’s life.
“It's your boyfriend. He's. ... ddead.. He's a ghost. He’s dead.” Moji startedcrying
“Please tell me you want to resign.” Tutu pleaded. She didn’t want to believe Moji. She knew Moji was an efficient woman and it was rare for Moji to bring any false story to her. Moji sounded very serious. Tutu wouldn’t believe her. “it’s a lie.” She said smiling. Trying to convince herself. Hoping Moji would smile back and say she was kidding.
Moji shook her head to assure Tutu it wasn’t a joke. She brought out a rumpled newspaper she was hiding behind her back showing an obituary containing the details of Jesse’s death and funeral arrangements.
Tutu was still sitting in her chair. She shakily stood up to walk closer to Moji and take the paper she was handing to her.
Her hands shook as she held the paper. She silently hoped the paper didn’t hold what she felt to be almost true. She silently begged God to make to never happen.
She held the paper closer to her eyes but wasn’t seeing anything. It was blur to her. She realised there were tears in her eyes. She slowly wiped them to read the news. Then it hit her.
Jesse’s picture was staring right at her, smiling. She smiled back. He looked so handsome. She was bringing the paper closer to her to kiss his face. She suddenly realised she was losing her mind. Why was she holding this paper?
Try to remember. Try. Try hard. Ok. It’s coming back. It’s coming. Someone just told me to read somebody’s obituary. Whose obituary? Ok. Let me read this. It’s a remembrance. Awww. The guy is so cute. Look at him. He would have been Twenty-nine in April. "It's been two years since you left us..blah..Babajide Jesse Akinyele blah... Fondly remembered by your friends.".
"Babajide? Is this my Jesse? " Tutu was asking Moji seriously.
Moji looked confused. In the past 60 seconds, she had watched several emotions cross Tutu's face. From Horror, to Sadness, to Confusion, to Happiness..then Awareness. But the one Tutu had on wasn't easy to decipher. She only nodded in response to Tutu's question.
"No! It can't be. Jide isn't dead. No!" Tutu grabbed the car keys and headed for the door. Moji wanted to stop her, but the look she got from Tutu changed her mind. Tutu slammed the door as she went through it. She was planning to drive really fast to find her Jide. Her personal Jide.
She dialled his number before starting the car. Her dad's car. No answer. She kept dialing till she reached his house.
Surprisingly, the gate was open. She entered his sitting room straight away.
"Jide? Jide?! Jesse? Answer me. Can you hear me?" her voice sounded guttural from the tears that didn't stop flowing. She wiped the tears in her eyes with her left hand, hoping to hear him from the land of the dead.
Jesse unplugged the earpiece from his ears. He didn't want to listen to Beethovan anymore. It was depressing enough that another woman he loved was leaving him for another man. He tried his best with Tutu. It just wasn't enough. It never was enough for women.. Wouldn't it be better to die? To just really die? He stared at the pills in front of him one last time. Somebody was in house. He felt the presence of another human. The hairs at the back of his head stood on end. He grabbed a plank. He realised he was being stupid.
Why am I holding this thing? Am I scared of dying? Hell no. I was just about to kill myself with these pills. What's the worst they would do? Burst my kidney? Tutu!!
He rushed out of his room to where he heard his name being called by the love of his life Tutu.
Tutu stepped back. Her eyes were heavy from too much weeping. Her nose was clogged. She opened her mouth to breathe better. She adjusted her head to take a better view of Jesse. He looked lean. How long has it been since she last saw him? His sideburns were around his face. He hadn't shaved. Had he even had his bath? There was an unpleasant smell. Tutu laughed maniacally. Three days. He had lost his mind.
"Jesse? "
He watched her as she moved her head in his direction. She looked pale. Had she been sick? No. Her cheeks were still robust. She was looking at him weirdly. Her nose was runny. She kept wiping her hand on it and cleaning on her dress. This was the love his life. He was watching her movements. All new to him. Then she laughed. Was she laughing at him or with him? He realised his face was smiling right from when he set his eyes on her. Maybe that's what made her laugh. My baby.
"Baby.“ He replied. W
She hesistated before going to him and crushing herself into his arms. The force of it threw him off balance as the both of them landed on the floor, their arms wrapped around each other in a near-death grip.
"I've missed you, my love." he kissed her hair and buried his nose in it. She cleaned her nose on his shirt. He laughed again at her funny ways. Tutu was back to him. His love. He didn’t care what she had done. He would accept her. Warts and all. "Tutu. You are back. Thank you."
Tutu released herself from his hold then looked at his face as if she was trying to be sure something was right. "Jide, please don't leave me. I beg you. Don't die."
"I'm here. I'm not going anywhere." he assured her.
"Promise me."
"I promise you, with all my heart."
Tutu reached for her pocket...

Sometime in April 2011
THE BUNCH NEWSPAPER
SON OF FORMER MINISTER OF WORKS KILLED!!
On April 23rd 2011, the son of former minister of works, Olusola Akinyele, was robbed and shot dead.
Tragedy hit the home of a former Minister of works, of Nigeria, Olusola Akinyele,
yesterday (Friday) when his son, Babajide was shot along with two of his friends.
Babajide, according to a source, was on his way home with two of his friends after attending a wedding of another one of their friends.
Our sources learned his two friends survived the gunshot wounds, but he was unfortunate for the bullet was aimed at his heart. He died shortly after he was rushed to the nearest hospital.

One of his friends who was in a stable condition said “There was a particular black car that was right behind us. We didn’t notice on time, until it was too late. The occupants drove right by us, rolled their windows down and shot at least 5 times and it hit everyone of us. It hit Jide more, because it was on his side the black car was and he had taken too many bullets before he could dodge. then they drove off, just as fast as they came.” before weeping profusely.

Although there were reports that he was armed as well but couldn’t use his arms to save his life,
the reports were regarded untrue by his friends.(Names Withheld) .

The former minister, who is a loyal member of the Working Progress Party Of Nigeria, was devastated by the news.

The late Babajide was a graduate of The University of Sheffield. He was described by his friends as an easy-going person,
who was generous to a fault and loved by all he met.

He is survived by his Father, Mother, Sister and Fiancée (Miss Teju Rogers).

THE FANKARD NEWSPAPER
OBITUARY
One month has passed, yet it seems like only yesterday.
In our hearts your memory lingers sweetly, tender, fond and true.
There is not a day that we don’t think about you,
Your smile, your kindness and the gentleness in your voice our hearts ache as we remember
the sweet precious memories you have left us to live with.
Words cannot express the void that was left with us.
YOU ARE ALWAYS REMEMBERED.
Survived by: Father, Mother, Sister and Fiancée.

"Trying to be sexy?"
Teju gasped. Who had entered her house at this time of the morning? She had changed into a very sexy lingerie even with her protruded belly, awaiting Obasanjo's arrival, and an unexpected guest had entered her house. Her freak-o-meter bypassed meltdqown. Obasanjo had always warned her about locking the doors, but the warnings had fallen on deaf ears.
"Turn around. Yes. It's me." the voice was teasing her.
Teju was shaking when she saw him."I'm imagining things. You are dead." she slumped.
A few minutes later, when she came to, she looked up to the face staring down at her.

"What are you doing here?"
"I don't have the answer to that question. Although I have many questions for you."
Teju raised her hand to touch his face. "You are real."
"Yes." he replied holding her hand to his face. "Did you ever love me? I want the truth from you and nothing more."
She started shaking her head.
"No. No... I'm so sorry." Teju began to cry. She was scared. "Please, don't hurt me. I'm pregnant. I have a husband. Please, don't kill me. I'm sorry. "

He looked mad and angry. Then he relaxed and continued.
"I won't. I promise. Just answer my questions."
"Ok." she sniffed.
"Why did you abort the pregnancy? I mean, kill my baby."
"I was never pregnant for you. I'm sorry." She wailed.

He was getting madder. He gripped her shoulders roughly and realized he was really hurting her, then he released his hold on her.
"Why did you tell me you were?" he asked weakly.
She didn't answer.
"Answer me!!" he shouted.
"It was the money." she answered shakily. "It was all about the money and you never had time for me." Teju complained, matter-of-factly.
"I know that I was never there, but I loved you. I just didn't know how to show you."
Silence...
"I see you've moved on."he glanced around looking at the wedding pictures on the walls. "Obasanjo is better at this stuff than me. I know."

"You pushed him to me. When you were out of town, you always asked him to look out for me. That's how it started. He's always been good to me. Jide, I'm very sorry. I always wanted your attention, but you never gave it to me. You were always busy, and he was always available."

"Thank you for telling me. I don't want to make the same mistakes with Tutu."

"Who's Tutu? What happened to you. I heard you died. There was even a funeral. I didn't feel I deserved to be there."

From what she said, Jesse was convinced Teju didn't know what her husband had done. He was sure she didn't know her husband had planned Jesse's murder. "I didn't die. It was all a plan. I wanted to know if you would come. When I didn't see you, I was convinced you didn't love me."

"I respect you. I like you very much, but Obasanjo's my 'one'."

Jesse smiled. "It's cool. It's not like I want you back. I love Tutu."

Teju smiled sadly. He smiled back, in the same manner. They were warming up to each other.
Jesse had learned to have a quick forgiving spirit. He held her hand. "I see why I liked you at first. You are pleasant, good-tempered. Endearing. I'd like you to meet my 'one'. Tutu."

"I'd talk to mine about it first."

"You better change into something decent. I don't want your husband thinking I impregnated you." he laughed.

Teju rushed to her room. Feeling relieved. She came back a few minutes later looking decent.

Jesse was staring at pictures on the walls.

Just then, Obasanjo walked in.
"Teju? Do you see him?" Obasanjo asked his wife. Jesse was staring at him smiling.

"Honey, that's Jide. He's not a ghost." Teju explained helpfully.

...***...
Wunmi hadn't bothered to reply the two voice notes Vincent had sent her. She texted him.
"hey dearie. I got the vn's. Kinda busy.ttyl"
"ok" he replied.
She turned up to watch Kolade dancing for her and asking her to join. The doorbell was ringing.
"Baby, get the door." Kolade said, breathlessly. If he had known who was at the door, he wouldn't have asked Wunmi to.
Wunmi walked to the door and opened to Jeniffer.
"hi.. You are Wunmi. Right?" Jeniffer smiled.
"Yes, who are you?" Wunmi didn't smile. She knew who Jennifer was but wanted her to introduce herself. Kolade was in the background, shocked at the 'movie' playing in front of him
"I'm Jeniffer."
"Jeniffer. So?" Wunmi was still standing in the doorway blocking her entrance.
"I'm his girl-friend. Won't you let me in?" She was beginning to notice Wunmi wasn't a very nice person. She almost pushed her way in, but Wunmi, with the size of her, pushed Jeniffer right back. Wunmi looked fragile because she wasn't really as tall as Jeniffer, but she was stronger than Jeniffer.

"Who's girl-friend?" Wunmi was pissed. "Kolade! Come here. Who's she?"

"Hey, Jeniffer what's up?" Kolade pretended as if he just knew Jeniffer had come.

"Spare me the bullshit! Who's she?" Jennifer asked, pointing to Wunmi.

Wunmi clapped her hands in disgust. She closed the door behind the three of them and stood between Jeniffer and Kolade, turning to Kolade. "What did you tell her I am?"
"Jeniffer, I told you she's my bestfriend." Kolade was avoiding Wunmi.

"I didn't forget, but why is she-"

"Kolade, I am your best friend?" Wunmi interrupted.

"Wunmi, Jeniffer's just a friend."

"Just a friend? So you sleep with your female friends?"

Jeniffer, who knew she was losing didn't want to let go just yet. She had to sow a few bad seeds. "I wonder what you do with your best friend."
"You don't need to wonder, dear. I will tell you. We have been dating for over 1year." Wunmi exaggerated. "We've known each other from school, our friends know each other, our parents know each other, we make love at least twice a week, we love each other most of the time, but then, we have rifts and when we do, you know he's a guy na, and he needs to empty himself, so he looks for any available potty. Pottys are everywhere. He just needs to find one that needs 'shit' then tell her all sorts of stuff like; I love you, I don't have a girlfriend or she's my bestfriend. Then when things get better between us, he leaves that potty. You are one of such pottys."

Jennifer laughed a shaky laugh. "What do you think you are? The toilet?" she was sweating profusely. She had started raising her voice. She knew she was losing.

"Yes. That's what I am. The toilet at home. You'll always be comfortable on them. Pottys are just 'temps'. Jeniffer ! bye. You see he was sweating when he came here. We were busy." Wunmi turned to Kolade "Baby, send her out and lock the gate. I have something for you." With that said, Wunmi went back in and locked the door.
Wunmi was the kind of person who would always look cool in hail, storm, earthquake, and rain. She didn't let Jennifer get to her. She always had a stoic expression on.

Some minutes later, Kolade was knocking on the door of his house for Wunmi to open.
Wunmi opened to him. "You stood there while I humiliated myself, called myself nasty names and you didn't even try to stop it?" Wunmi demanded.
"Baby, you were winning. I liked that, I didn't want to spoil the fun."
"Stop being an idiot. You had sex with her."
"Only once."
"I wasn't asking. I was saying. What is your problem Kolade? What do you want from other girls that I don't give you?"
"You see? That's it. You are nagging again. It's what I don't like."
"I am asking you a simple question and by the way, you are the one who's nagging."
"I don't want to talk about this. Not right now."
"Why not? You are always running away from confrontations. It’s now or never."
"Never, then."
"What?"
"You heard me."
"Kolade, are you serious. What do you now expect me to do. I came all the way from my house to settle things with you and you-"
"It's settled already."
"I'm going to stop coming to your house."
"Why?"
"You always have the upper hand here."
Kolade shrugged.

(Dear readers, Don't you just believe Wunmi is an idiot?)

...***...
Teju was alone at home. She sat in front of her big TV eating a third cup of vanilla ice-cream. She was getting very tired of the pregnancy. She was tired of sharing her body with the baby. She wanted her body back. Her skin felt as if it was expanding to its limit.

"God, let this thing just drop. I'm tired." she was crying again. Her emotions were in over-drive. When she was angry, she was extremely angry, when she was mad, no one could be madder, when she was sad, there was always a gloomy atmosphere surrounding her. She grabbed her phone and dialled her husband's number.

"Oba, I'm tired of this thing."she said through tears. "Can't we just get the doctor to take it out."
"I'm tired too of your constant complaints!" Obasanjo snapped. "Why do you always call to complain? Are you not a woman. Whenever I see your name on my caller I.D, I know you want to complain. I go through a lot at work here too. I am very busy now."

Teju started weeping noisily. She ended the call. Obasanjo called right back.
"Hey...Teju, I'm sorry. It's not easy on me here too. I miss how you used to be. When I come home, I have to clean up after you and you know how I feel about domsetic helps. I'm really stressed. Honey? Are you there? You don't make things easy on me? At night, it's another problem. You don't let me touch you anymore. I feel unloved. I'm tired too. I promise you this will be the only baby. Are you there? Honey talk to me. Teju? Teju?
"Come home now."
"Home? There's a lot to be done here."
"Are you not the director? I want you home now."
"I'll be home in about 2 hours. Say 11:30."
"It's Friday. I want you here now. I'm scared."
"Scared of?"
"Just come home." she threatened to cry.
"Ok. I'm leaving."..

“I saw someone better. A handsome young and tall man. The proprietors’ son and he’s single.”
Jemima was shaking her head out of pity for her friend.
“Don’t pity me. Stop giving me that look. You found someone before me even though you are younger than me doesn’t mean I can’t find one. I’m not an old maid.

Made kept driving, no destination in mind. He was reminiscing on the perfect times he had had with Tolani.
The perfect months and years that had gone by until the last twenty minutes.
The first year of their marriage was one of the best moments in his life; he had never imagined he would have this nightmare in their time together. He had hoped he would have a daughter who looked exactly like Tolani then 2 years after, they would have a set of male twins. He smiled at the memory.
