South Africa has more millionaires than Nigeria but at the end of the day, Nigeria still has more money (or assets if you like to think about it that way) in her economy than South Africa if you really understand the meaning of a bigger GDP. The implication is, if you discount infrastructural setbacks and bottleneck bureaucracy, Nigeria offers a higher return on investment than South Africa. So what's y'alls point again? |
These Kenyans must think too highly of themselves to compare themselves with Nigeria. Nigeria with all her problems rn is still far ahead of Kenya. Someone dares question the reliability of Nigerian economic data? Feed on this article from Financial Times please. https://www.ft.com/content/4e5cd834-75ea-11e6-bf48-b372cdb1043a?_e_pi_=7%2CPAGE_ID10%2C2190726002 I don't know why I have to educate these Kenyans on the meaning of the big figures that make the Nigerian economy so big. Like, check the telecom sector. That is a multi billion dollar industry that cannot be matched by Kenya in 20years. Foreign telcos as well as a Nigerian telco are doing well. Glo is the second biggest after MTN and we know MTN had the first start. Tourism. You think that ends with visiting parks and natural features? Their is business tourism. The number of high end hotels in Nigeria and their networth is far bigger than Kenyas. Yes Oil and gas is a major contributor to the big figures and this is almost completely lacking in Kenya. Yet you question the figures? The Nigerian Stock Exchange is the second most capitalized in dollar terms on the continent after South Africa. Nigerian banks have a bigger composite worth than their Kenyan counterpart. How many Kenyan banks sponsor multinational events on the continent? Yet you wonder why Nigeria is so big? Nollywood for the first contributed more than 1% of the GDP. By simple arithmetic, that makes it a multi billion dollar industry. Second to none on the continent. I saw some yapping about their ports being busier than Nigerian ports. The question is, what is the value of goods passing through these ports, not just the volume. Think about the number of cars alone for instance that are on Nigerian roads most of which were imported. The import is a cost and Nigerians effectively pay for these vehicles. What does that tell you about the sum purchasing power of the country? That is not to demean the importance of local production which Nigeria has been doing quite good in since the last administration. Trade and Commerce. This is not even an area we should go into. As a matter of fact, it is always still thought that Nigerian economy is still underestimated. Why? There is so much informal commercial activities going on that are not properly documented. Kenya may have a higher penetration of formal trade cuz of their small size but total volume and value of trade in Lagos alone will easily undermine what is done in the whole Kenya. I could go on and on. So if you are going to query Nigeria's big economy, you will have to question the IMF and World Bank representatives too knowing that the figures are not cooked up in isolation, anywhere in the world. Kenyanstar:And you think that is a match for Eko Atlantic that is already being constructed? Anyway, a city with no coherent plan and render cannot be taken seriously yet seeing that your last picture is actually of Dubai. |
Kenyanstar:You heard me right. The total number of kilometers stretch of roads, rails and numbers of airport in Nigeria is way bigger than Kenya. There had been decay over the decades but since start of democracy, there has been improvement too. And yes, there is no project more ambitious than the Eko Atlantic and Abuja Centenary cities on the African continent right now. |
iblawi:Don't mind them. I kept talking about Lagos and they misinterprete it to be paradise. If Lagos were to be run like an independent country, it would be richer and more successful than Kenya. The number of activities each day in Lagos will dwarf everything they do in Kenya. Yet they come up to do dumb comparisons. Well I blame so many years of ineptitude government. |
Nigerians are in Kenya and it's making these ones already go giddy. Nigerians are hustlers everywhere and even though I can't speak for the conduct of every individual, many are doing legally well in whatever country they are. Very successful set of people. But it doesn't end there. A lot of Nigerians are successful in their home country too. In fact, the Nigerian rich class cannot be compared to any African rich class of color. Nigerians are lavish in taste. And my statement made some people jealous? But it's the fact. Even the SA government committed specially to wooing the Nigerian rich class to come and spend in their economy. I'm against it but it's always been the reality. This whole infrastructure argument, think about it this way, if you are to combine everything you find in the 36 States of the country into one, it would outstrip what y'all have in Kenya by far. In Nigeria, every 36 state has a capital that tries to become a major city. Some even have 2 or more. Resources are divided among them even though not efficiently enough cuz of many years of corruption. In Kenya, attention is given to Nairobi, Mombasa and a few other towns. This explains why in totality, Nigeria will always be bigger than Kenya and a close match for South Africa. What South Africa has going for it is the sophistication of their development, but Nigeria definitely has more of the elements of infrastructure, whether sophisticated or not. And Nigeria is closing up this gap with newer developments second to none on the African continent. Give her a few more years and y'all should come and continue this dumb comparison with us. |
MPSA:It doesn't match your smallest city but only Jo'burg has a higher GDP than it, right? Well, the joke is on you. I see you just wanna clown so I'm done with you bro. |
MPSA:Nigerians are all over the world. Nigerians are in countries far less developed than Nigeria. So if Nigerians being in your country makes you feel good, then good luck to you. But that doesn't change the fact that there are a lot of rich people left in the country. And a huge middle class too. The ratios may not be in the favor of Nigeria atm, but in absolute numbers, it is what businesses find difficult to ignore. |
MPSA:Man stop clowning in my mention. An array of concrete buildings and so? You won't see such in Lagos or what? You had better started posting what I won't find in Lagos thats truly amusing. Lagos doesn't generate adequate electricity yet her economy is bigger than the mere array of concrete highrises you show off. When Lagos finally starts to be sufficient with power, trust me that should scare your mighty 'Jo'burg'. Lagos cannot even have the space for so much forests because every square meters of land in the city counts. That notwithstanding, aerial views of Ikoyi still show a good mix of vegetation and exclusive structures. Lagos is rich and beautiful. So what's your point again?
|
Johannesburg is the only city clearly ahead of Lagos atm. And so many African business reports state that Lagos is fastly closing that gap. If you watch CNBCA often, you'd know better. Anyway, I'm still itching to see what's in Pretoria or Capetown that you won't find in Lagos and Abuja (VI, Ikoyi, Eko Atlantic and Banana Island especially). Y'all should post more pictures of Pretoria and Capetown please |
The people crying patriotism are mostly Kenyans and SAns defending their own countries too. The hypocrisy makes you wonder who are the really psychic people here. The best parts of Nigeria cannot be compared to the best parts of Kenya. Lagos is beautiful, classy and expensive. Lagos is a big economy. If you've truly been to Lagos, the buzz and activeness will make you understand what makes Lagos tick and why it can't be underestimated. The bad effects of such big population and activities will always tell on the less developed parts. But the very developed parts are truly exclusive. Eko Atlantic is no longer a dream. It's becoming a reality with many buildings coming up. Imagine what this place would look like in 5 to 10 years. Lagos is an African giant, no doubt about this.
|
Oh so now they are now screaming "slum" "computer" "good pictures" as if all the while, they themselves have been posting "stones" "papers" and "leaves" and not pictures. Lol smh |
Indeed, Nigerians love to incorporate taste and style in their structures. Or what do you make of the first picture?

Sleek buildings, flashy cars. Lagos is Urban. Abuja(3rd picture) is trippy.

Lagos, Nigeria
|
No other African country has a big taste like Nigerians. Reason why they lavish money. Save for years of bad leadership, Nigeria is Africa's big brother.
|
Some tastefully finished apartment condos in Lagos. Go to the page and knock yourself out.
|
Lagos is beautiful. Take that to the bank.

More Lagos
|
I was telling the other guy that Nairobi might be cool, green and beautiful, but Lagos has class and taste. Lagosians love to impress with beautiful structures. That's what differentiates her from Nairobi with tacky buildings, no offense.
|
Lagos is progressing and Johannesburg should watch her back. Although we all know what will eventually happen in the long run.
|
And yes Lagos is indeed beautiful.
|
Ibadan tho very ancient, the city is gradually coming up. Looking to be like the hilly old parts of Rio. Second picture is Abeokuta I took from someone's snap.
|
Jay254:Sorry I'm still not impressed by your pictures, very few of those structures look as fascinating as what is in Ikoyi, VI and Eko Atlantic. And the guy shouting 100 years for Lagos to catch up with Johannesburg, dream on! It will shock you by the turn of the decade. Just enjoy your "South Africa" is the best while it lasts. It is an open secret to the world that Nigeria is really the force to reckon with in Africa in the middle to long term. |
Nairobi and Kenya at large is cool and naturally beautiful. But it seems to me that most of the buildings in Nairobi are tall high rises that are mostly old concrete in the middle of large forests. Lagos on the other hand has its fair share of these old concrete highrises on Lagos Island but places in VI, Ikoyi, and the emerging Eko Atlantic are much more modern than the Kenyan counterpart. Lagos is very largely developed with not much forested area left. Most of the newer structures are glass and steel. And it's just the beginning. With large projects like the Eko Atlantic and Orleans area, Lagos will be 10 times greater than any Kenyan city and Johannesburg will only be at its tail. Lagos has a lot of cash going for it. It's just a matter of some few years. But even as it is now, it is relatively impressive and more modern in Outlook especially the VI, Ikoyi, lekki, eko Atlantic parts than Nairobi. |
More Lagos. I like those pictures of Kenya tho.
