President Muhammadu Buhari has assured that there will be free eduction for science, technology and education students in tertiary institutions.

Buhari gave the assurance Tuesday while presenting the 2016 Appropriation Bill to a joint session of the National Assembly.

President Buhari stressed that this would indeed mark a historic milestone for us as a nation.

Buhari said his administration would unveil a conditional cash transfer programme for the poorest and most vulnerable.

The president said the full programme would be presented in the coming weeks and that it would include home-grown public primary school feeding.

"Furthermore, through the office of the Vice President, we are working with various development partners to design an implementable and transparent conditional cash transfer program for the poorest and most vulnerable.

"This program will be implemented in phases. Already, the compilation of registers of the poorest persons is ongoing.

"In the coming weeks, we will present the full programme which will include our home-grown public primary school feeding and free education for science, technology and education students in our tertiary institutions.

"Indeed, this will mark a historic milestone for us as a nation", President Buhari said.

The management of Media Trust Ltd, publishers of Daily Trust Newspaper has demanded for the immediate release of its editor detained by the authorities of Niger Republic.

Danjuma Lawan Adamu, the Deputy Editor of Daily Trust on Sunday has been in detention in Agadez in Niger since Saturday. He was detained on his way to do an investigative story on the route used by Nigerian youth to migrate to European countries.

Adamu who had contacted the management of Daily Trust upon his arrest on Saturday said his journey was smooth until he approached Agadez, and was stopped and detained by the security operatives who claimed his travel documents were inappropriate.

He said:” I got necessary travel approvals from the Nigerien consulate in Kano, Nigeria and at every checkpoint; I presented them upon request and was allowed to proceed. I had passed up to 10 checkpoints and was cleared accordingly until I approached Agadez. The security alleged that the document authorizing my journey was signed but wasn’t stamped. I have been detained since then and am left wondering how I should be punished for a fault of no mine.”

Agadez, a desert town is a notorious connecting point between West and North Africa used by migrants who travel through the desert to reach Libya before journeying to Europe by sea.

“As an experienced cross border reporter, Lawan Danjuma sought and got the relevant documentation from the Kano Consulate office of the Nigerien embassy after stating his mission to Agadez. It was the same documentation that he used at different check points including the Nigeria/Niger border post at Kongolom, Katsina state and was only stopped and arrested on reaching Agadez,” said Daily Trust’s Executive Director/Editor-in-Chief Malam Mannir Dan Ali in a statement.



“We see the arrest as an infringement of his right as an ECOWAS citizen and have since reached the Nigerien authorities to ask for the release of the reporter. We are shocked that more than 24 hours after the arrest, he still is being held and his freedom is being curtailed,” it said.
