abc115: The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has given escapees from the Benin Medium Security Correctional Centre and Oko Medium Security Correctional Centre on Friday to return voluntarily or face the wrath of the law.
Following Monday’s jailbreaks in the two centres by hoodlums, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) disclosed that 1,993 inmates escaped from their facilities.
Mr Obaseki went on an assessment tour of the affected NCoS centres and the police stations that were burnt in Benin City by the hoodlums. He was accompanied by his deputy, Philip Shaibu; a deputy inspector-general of police, Celestine Okoye; the state commissioner of police, Johnson Kokumo; representatives of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Federal Road Safety Corps, among others.
However, the controller of corrections, Edo State Command, Babayo Maisanda, revealed on Wednesday that 1,818 inmates were still at large, while 163 have been re-arrested and six have returned voluntarily. Speaking at the end of the on-the-spot assessment, Mr Obaseki lamented that the extent of destruction was massive, adding that it was against the spirit of genuine #EndSARS protesters that went about their protests in a peaceful manner.
The governor said the government would not sit down and watch hoodlums operate in such a manner, adding that the attacks on the security facilities were orchestrated by criminally minded people.
He, therefore, warned the escapees to turn themselves in at the Edo State Command of the Nigeria Police Force in Benin City for them to be returned to the correctional centres.
Mr Obaseki said, “You will agree with me that this is not in the spirit of the #EndSARS protest. This is sheer criminality while the real protesters were focusing on the reform of our policing system and not to destroy government property, destroy prisons, and release inmates.
“So, you can tell that there were some criminal intentions behind these acts and the #EndSARS protest in Edo was hijacked by criminal and they used the opportunity to come and release their colleagues who were held in our correctional centre.
“We condemn the act wholeheartedly and we expect that even the #EndSARS protesters would join us in condemning this dastardly act. The government cannot sit down and fold its arms to allow the breakdown of law and order in our society because everybody would be affected and having undertaken the assessment and seen the extent of destruction that has taken place, we would now move swiftly into action.
Cherez: Honestly, he really goofed He kept quiet all these while? Then cameras were removed in the afternoon at Lekki toll gate. Then around 6:30pm all lights went off for the soldiers to attack and power got restored after the soldiers left Isn't this a coordinated attack? Lekki has been the most peaceful protest ground; people cleaned the first up leaving the place clean in the morning Don't you understand? Then suddenly this He can't absolve himself of this, that's the truth Sanwolu might but his words this morning that there were no fatalities sold him out
Sanwo Olu really messed up big time with that statement. I was like, "what?!"
sinkhole: Buhari no go declare anything, does he even know what is happening in Nigeria? Since everybody have been calling him to address the youths, have you seen him done so?
A big AMEN my broda. There shall be no State of Emergency declaration. As this is not the way to go. in JESUS name.
MadeInTokyo: My guy in Abuja has told me same thing that buhari will declare state of emergency in Lagos and possibly Edo state
That's the end of Tinubu's dynasty.
The new Lagos military administrator acting under the instructions of the ASO ROCK cabal ,first task will be to terminate all existing Lagos state government contracts linked to any of Tinubu's companies like Alpha Beta, Hitech construction, his family or his business associates, and nothing any body can do about it, cos Lagos will be under military rule for at least the next 9 months.
Tinubu and Sanwo Olu played into the hands of the Aso Rock cabal by agreeing with the Federal Government for the deployment of soldiers to be stationed at the toll gate and inside his oriental hotel premises, which lead to the genocide. The removal of CCTVs from the toll gates and the turning off of the streets light the tolls gates minutes before the Soldiers carried out massacre on innocent Nigerians, shows the Lagos state Government, LCC and the toll gate operators were all complicit in the massacre and gave nod for the soldiers to execute genocide on their fellow Nigerians.
I agree with you that this is where Sanwo Olu made mistake. He should never have imposed curfew. The protest was peaceful.

Ndlistic: Soldiers calm the air as ENDSARS protesters defy govt curfew in Osun
Despite the directive of the Osun state government imposing a 24-hour curfew, the ENDSARS protesters in Osogbo have defied the order as they storm the state capital to demand an end to police brutality.
The Osun state government had on Tuesday imposed 24 hours’ curfew in the state to curb the escalation of violence in the state.
However, the protestants in defiance of the order besieged and mounted barricades at Olaiya junction, Osogbo.
In response to the defied curfew, scores of soldiers stormed the convergence spot of the EndSARS protesters.
Our correspondent who was present at the scene reports that the military troop arrived the EndSARS protest Ground in numbers in about seven military vans around 11:10 am on Wednesday.
The soldiers displayed a high level of civility and professionalism while addressing the protestants.
The soldiers who were fully armed reacted to the agitations and complaints lodged by protesting youths against alleged brutality, extortion and extra-judicial killings by operatives of Special Anti-Robbery Response Squad (SARS) peacefully.
The youths due to the calmness of the troops also conducted themselves properly as they displayed the ethos of Omoluabi, though, they only chanted solidarity songs, they reiterated the need for SARS to be scrapped.
Addressing the protesting youths, one of the soldiers who had earlier joined the protesters with the Nigerian flag in his hand assured the protestants that they are not at the scene to launch any form of attack on the protesters. The soldier added that they are with the protesters and would ensure they are safe in the course of their peaceful protest.
He said there was the need for the protesters to obey the executive order of the state governor, Mr Gboyega Oyetola emphasizing that they will not attack the protesters.
It was learnt that the hoodlums would have wreaked havoc on Osun State Broadcasting Company (OSBC) and some other Government-owned parastatals if not for the quick intervention of the soldiers who later restored peace in the areas.
