On Friday, June 16, Forbes Magazine declared South African billionaire, Johann Rupert, ”Africa’s richest man,” displacing Nigeria’s Aliko Dangote, who has held that title consecutively for 10 years. Forbes real-time Global Billionaires Ranking pegged Rupert’s net worth at $12 billion and Dangote’s at $10.8 billion. Dangote’s net worth took a massive dip due to the naira depreciation caused by the Central Bank of Nigeria’s decision to auction the dollar at a relatively lower rate than the official market price. The central bank sold the dollar almost 30 per cent cheaper. With Johanna’s new status as Africa’s richest man, here are important things to know about him. 1, 73 years old Rupert was born in Stellenbosch, South Africa, on June 1, 1950 to business tycoon Anton Rupert and his wife, Hurberte. He is the eldest of his parent’s children. 2, Rupert studied economics and company law at the University of Stellenbosch but dropped out to pursue a business career. 3, In 2004, the same university honoured Rupert with an honorary degree in economics. In 2008, he received another honorary doctorate from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. 4, Rupert is married to Gaynor Rupert. The couple has three children together; Anton Ruper Jr., Caroline Rupert, and Hanneli Rupert. 5, In 1979, he returned to South Africa after a while in the US and established Rand Merchant Bank where he remained CEO until 1984 when the company merged to form RMB Holdings. 6, Upon leaving RMB, Rupert joined his father’s cigarette manufacturing company, Rembrandt Group, founded in 1948. 7, In 1988, Rupert founded Compagnie Financiere Richemont, a Switzerland-based luxury goods holding company. In the same year, he was appointed Non-Executive Director of Rothmans International plc and was also honoured by the Sunday Times as the “Businessman of the Year.” 8, In 1989, Rupert became the vice chairman of his father’s company and was made chairman of the same company, Rembrandt Group Limited, in 1991. 9, in 1997, Rupert became the Non-Executive Chairman of Gold Fields South Africa Ltd. 10, Rupert is also a golf enthusiast. In 1990, he established the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. The foundation is aimed at addressing social issues through sports and has helped with about 675 projects globally.

South African Johann Rupert has displaced Nigerian billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote to become Africa’s richest man, Forbes Magazine said. Rupert’s net worth is currently $12 billion according to Forbes Real-time Global Billionaires Ranking, while Dangote trails behind him with a net worth of $10.8 billion as of Friday. Dangote’s net worth dropped due to the recent operational charges on the foreign exchange market carried out by the Central Bank of Nigeria, which led to the depreciation of the Naira against the US dollar. Consequently, Forbes and Bloomberg had to recalculate the fortunes of all Nigerian billionaires leading to the significant drop in the wealth of Dangote, Abdul Samad Rabiu, the founder of BUA cement, and Mike Adenuga, the Chairman of telecommunications giant Globacom Limited. Meanwhile, with the expected kickoff of the $20 billion Dangote refinery commissioned last Month, Aliko Dangote is expected to bounce back. https://dailypost.ng/2023/06/17/johann-rupert-displaces-dangote-as-africas-richest-man-forbes/?amp=1

UFC fighter Conor McGregor has been accused of sexually assaulting a woman after an NBA Finals basketball game in Miami earlier this month. A legal letter outlining allegations, sent to Mr McGregor and seen by BBC News, states the alleged assault took place in a bathroom at Kaseya Center. A lawyer representing Mr McGregor said: "The allegations are false. Mr McGregor will not be intimidated." The City of Miami Police said an investigation had been opened. In a statement, UFC said it was aware of the allegations and was gathering further details. The Miami Heat, which hosted the NBA Finals game, said it was conducting a full investigation. The woman's lawyer, Ariel Mitchell, said her client had been watching game four of the NBA Finals on Friday 9 June before the alleged incident happened. In the legal letter to Mr McGregor, Ms Mitchell alleged the woman was forced into a men's bathroom by security guards from the NBA and Miami Heat before being violently sexually assaulted by Mr McGregor. The letter claimed the woman was able to free herself from the bathroom, but left behind her purse, which she is said to have retrieved after pleading with security guards. It alleges that security for the league, team and arena "aided and abetted" Mr McGregor by trapping and isolating her in the bathroom. In an interview, Ms Mitchell said she had obtained video footage showing part of the alleged incident. A police report relating to the incident was made on Sunday 11 June, the City of Miami Police told BBC News. "This is an open investigation so no additional information can be released at this time," a police department spokeswoman said. Mr McGregor's appearance at the NBA Finals made headlines after the Irish former champion hit the Miami Heat's mascot during half-time, in an apparent stunt for a pain relief spray he was promoting. The person acting as the mascot was taken to a local hospital for treatment after the incident, the Athletic reported. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-65924407.amp?espv=1
