It was all drama as a Nigerian Police Officer was caught on camera hanging on the bonnet of a Danfo bus in Lagos. 

The officer who was forming 'Superman' to arrest a Danfo bus jumped on the bonnet while the bus is still moving on a low key.

According to reports, the drama started when the officer had demanded a bribe from the Danfo bus driver, but he was snubbed.

According to Okupe, the Labour Party and NNPP have agreed to form a new political order in the country but are yet to reach an agreement on which party will produce the presidential candidate.

He told Vanguard that both Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso are insisting on being the presidential candidate.

The former presidential aide noted that an agreement on who emerges the flag bearer is the only issue delaying the alliance.
He said: “We have not foreclosed on anything. What has happened is that there have been a lot of informal discussions and interventions on the merger. There have been a lot of third party interventions on this same issue.

Officially, I have been involved in two meetings in two different locations where we discussed extensively. I can tell you authoritatively that I have spoken with Rabiu Kwankwaso on this matter

We have agreed to cooperate together as two different parties to enthrone a new political order in this country. We also agreed on working together politically and to constitute a platform on which a national grand alliance can be built in pursuit of the same goal.

We have not reached an agreement on the issue of whether the North will be the president or the South will be the president because both sides are insisting on being the arrowhead of the union in terms of presidency. This is where we have not really agreed. As of today, that is where we stand but there are a lot of goodwill ambassadors working behind the scene.

“The options are still open. We have up till July 17 or so to take a final decision but the options are still open. We have not foreclosed on anything.”

Okupe however expressed surprise over NNPP saying that Kwankwaso has not agreed to be Obi’s running mate.

I am surprised about that and I have tried to reach out. It is something that is a bit too early. We have direct access and we are talking officially and unofficially. I heard the information but I have not been able to confirm it,” he said.

The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Abdullahi Adamu has said he is not deterred by the mass defection of leading members of the party, especially those in the National Assembly.

Adamu while addressing the Senate Press Corps after a closed-door meeting with the Senate caucus on Wednesday said, defections rocking the APC were seasonal and normal, stressing that all manner of behaviour is expected at this time.

“The wave of Senators leaving APC for elsewhere is an unfortunate development when it happens, but this is a season for all manner of behaviours in the political space in the country and Nigeria is not an exception.

The Federal HIgh Court in Abuja on Monday issued an interim order restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from going ahead with its plan to end the ongoing voter registration exercise on June 30.

The judge, Mobolaji Olajuwon, made the interim order in a ruling on an application for an interim injunction by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and 185 other concerned Nigerians.

The applicants had urged the court to extend the voter registration period to avert illegal disenfranchisement of many yet-to-be-registered Nigerians willing to vote in various elections.

According to a statement by SERAP on Monday, the applicants filed the suit after INEC to extended the deadline for the conduct of primaries by political parties by six days, from June 3 to June 9, but failed “failed to also extend the online pre-registration which ended May 30, 2022 and the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) ending June 30, 2022.”

The statement disclosed further that the court, after granting the applicant’s request for an interim order extending the voter registration deadline, adjourned the case until June 29.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has stopped the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from ending voter registration on 30 June 2022.

Honourable Justice Mobolaji Olajuwon (Court 10) today granted an order of interim injunction following the hearing of an argument on motion exparte by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP).

SERAP and 185 concerned Nigerians had early this month filed the lawsuit against INEC asking the court to “declare unconstitutional, illegal, and incompatible with international standards the failure of the electoral body to extend the deadline for voter registration to allow eligible Nigerians to exercise their rights.”

In the suit, SERAP had asked the court for “an order restraining INEC, its agents, privies, assigns, or any other person(s) claiming through it from discontinuing the continuous voters’ registration exercise from the 30th June 2022 or any other date pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.”

The suit is adjourned to 29th June, 2022 for the hearing of the Motion on Notice for interlocutory injunction.

The suit followed the decision by INEC to extend the deadline for the conduct of primaries by political parties by six days, from June 3 to June 9. But the commission failed to also extend the online pre-registration which ended May 30 2022 and the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) ending 30 June 2022.

In the suit number FHC/L/CS/1034/2022 filed at the Federal High Court, Lagos, and transferred to Abuja, SERAP is asking the court to determine “whether the failure of INEC to extend the deadline for voter registration is not a violation of Nigerian Constitution, 1999 [as amended], the Electoral Act, and international standards.”

SERAP is asking the court for “a declaration that the failure of INEC to extend the deadline for voter registration is a violation of eligible Nigerians’ rights to participate freely in their own government, equality and equal protection.”

SERAP is also asking the court for “an order of mandamus to direct and compel INEC to extend voter registration by a minimum of three months and take effective measures to ensure that eligible Nigerians are able to register to exercise their right to vote in the 2023 general elections.”

The suit, read in part: “Enforcing unrealistic voter registration deadline while extending the deadline for party primaries would deny and abridge the constitutional and international human rights of eligible voters.”

“INEC mandates ought to be exercised in a fair, just and non-discriminatory manner. The extension of voter registration would ensure that Nigerian voters are treated equally and fairly. The future of Nigeria’s democracy depends on it.”

“Voters are also critical stakeholders in the electoral process. Treating all eligible Nigerian voters fairly would advance the people’s right to vote and to participate in their own government.”

“INEC must not only be independent and impartial in the exercise of its constitutional and statutory responsibilities, but must also be seen to be independent and impartial.”

“Extending the voter registration exercise would also bolster voter confidence in the electoral process.”

“One of the people’s most sacred rights is the right to vote. The commission has a constitutional and statutory responsibility to ensure the effective exercise of the right of all eligible voters to participate in their own government.”

“Extending the deadline for party primaries without providing adequate time and opportunity for eligible voters to register and participate in the 2023 general elections would amount to an unfair and discriminatory treatment of Nigerian voters, and violate other human rights.”

“Extending the voter registration deadline would provide more time for eligible voters, including young people, the elderly, people living with disability, as well as those resident in states facing security challenges and living in IDP camps to participate in the 2023 elections.”

“Extending the deadline for voter registration would be entirely consistent with constitutional and international standards, and the Electoral Act. Any such extension would also not impact negatively on INEC’s election calendar and activities.”

“The public perception of the independence and impartiality of INEC is essential for building public confidence in the electoral process, and ensuring the credibility and legitimacy of the 2023 elections.”

“Where Nigerians have doubts about the independence and impartiality of INEC, they are more likely to have less confidence in the electoral process thereby undermining democracy.”

“Extending the deadline for voter registration would also be justified, given reports of challenges in the voter registration exercise, especially for young people, the elderly, persons living with disabilities, and those resident in states facing security challenges and living in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps.”

“The will of the people is expressed through democratic elections. This requires that people should be afforded adequate time and opportunity to register to vote. Extending the voter registration deadline is crucial for promoting the independence and impartiality of INEC and building public confidence in the electoral process.”

“The Nigerian Constitution 1999 (as amended) provides in Section 14(1)(c) that, ‘the participation by the people in their government shall be ensured in accordance with the provisions of this Constitution.’”

“Section 9(6) of the Electoral Act 2022 provides that ‘the registration of voters, updating and revision of the Register of Voters under this section shall not stop not later than 90 days before any election covered by this Act.’”

“Similarly, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance guarantee the right to political participation.”

“These human rights treaties also require states parties including Nigeria to ensure the independence and impartiality of national electoral bodies responsible for the management of elections, as well as to promote the establishment of the necessary conditions to foster citizen participation.”

“The right of people to participate in their government is a fundamental feature of any democratic society, and any undue restriction of the right would strike at the heart of representative government.

Obi described 70 percent of politicians in Nigeria as “lunatics”.

He was echoed by the National Secretary of the Young Peoples Party( YPP), Vidiyano Bamaiyi, who described 75 percent of politicians in Nigeria as “political bandits”.
Obi said only a lunatic in government would steal N80 billion of the citizens money for personal use.

He said Nigeria would continue to suffer unless these “lunatics” were flushed out and replaced with competent people at the next elections.

“We have prayed enough, it is time to act. With these people in power? You can pray from now until anytime, they won’t go until you chase them out. So, it is time to act, not just pray. It is time for us to close the church and deal with these people.”

The main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has dismissed speculations that its Selection Committee has settled for Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike as the party’s vice-presidential candidate.

Vanguard had reported that the PDP Selection Committee, had yesterday, met to fulfill its mandate of recommending a running mate for the party’s presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

Speaking on the development in Abuja, Wednesday, the National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said reports in the media that the PDP has picked Wike could only be in the realm of rumour.

He said the National Working Committee is currently looking into the matter and consulting, in order to consider the best vice presidential candidate for the party in the 2023 elections.

“We have a process as a party, because we are organic. We follow through the processes. We recognize the importance of participatory democracy, ensuring that every stakeholder and organ of the party is involved in our decision-making process,”


“This is the beginning of the process, consideration and advisory body need to get to the level where, in consultation with the presidential candidate, they will deliberate on who is most suitable. That process is ongoing, so any report of a particular candidate at this point is probably premature,” he said.

At the meeting, three members voted for others, while the chairman, who can only vote when there is a tie, did not vote.

The Chairman who was represented by the Secretary to the Agency Shedrach Haruna said the drugs comprise illicit substances such as Cannabis Sativa, Cocaine, and psychotropic substances and are worth over a billion naira.

The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party for the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has vowed to stop the bleeding of the country if elected in 2023.

Obi stated this at a one-day international colloquium in Port Harcourt organized by Christ Church for the presidential candidates of the different political parties, with the theme:
“What Do Nigerians Want?”.

The former Anambra governor said the unemployment of 100 million Nigerians was responsible for the widespread poverty in the country.

He said that a country that turned its people into poverty would be faced with crises, unemployment, and insecurity.

“There is no way you will have 100 million people living in poverty and you will not have crises, we have more people living in poverty than China and Egypt combined, a population of about 1.5 billion.

“There is nowhere you won’t have this crisis we are going through with 35 to 40 percent unemployment rate. When compared to the 120 million people who are supposed to be working in Nigeria today, only 40 million are gainfully employed.

“We have 80 million people who are supposed to be working in the country that are not working.

“The consequence is that we have a state but is unproductive. Nigeria as a country is unproductive because when we talk about 80million people that are not working, about 70 percent of them is made up of the youth in their productive age doing nothing and with so much tendencies.

“The country is not doing anything, is not working. All the country is doing today is sharing. Everybody is looking for what to share,“ he said.

He said the nation was in crisis because more than 90 percent of its revenue is used for service debt, noting that no country or individual could survive with that.

“Last year virtually all the money we spent was borrowed. In the first five months of last year, our total revenue was N1.847trillion. We spent N1.802 trillion into servicing debt, so a total of 200million people were left with N45 billion,“ he said.

Obi said that the country needed to be taken back from where it was now and that required a number of things.

He promised to stop the bleeding of the country if elected in 2023.

He said any money borrowed by Nigeria would be used for investment, adding “our country has to move from sharing formula to production formula.

“We are not productive because our factories are not working. We need to bring back the country by focusing on our micro-small businesses to be able to support them and is not difficult.

“We need to do something to power, if we get it right and start borrowing for investment, that is when we start pulling people out of poverty, the more we pull people out of poverty, the more we reduce criminality.

“Another is in education, our human capital is very low and is unacceptable. We are now 152 out of 158 in human capital development,“ Obi said.

Tinubu urged to pick Yakubu Dogara as running mate

Bola Tinubu has been urged to tap the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, as his running mate for the 2023 presidential election.

Mr. Ukkasha Rahama, a chieftain of the All the Progressives Congress (APC) and also the National Chairman of the Youth Progressives Forum of APC, made the recommendation at a news conference in Bauchi on Tuesday.

He said that Tinubu and Dogara would make a perfect combination for the 2023 election.

“In a secular and multicultural country like Nigeria, broad considerations should be made to accommodate all interest groups in leadership for equity and fairness.

Rahama also said that the choice of Dogara as Vice-President would send a message across that the APC was a party for all Nigerians as it was sensitive to the demand for equity in all sections of the country.

Bishop David Oyedepo, the founder and president of Living Faith Church Worldwide, has slammed President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, calling it the most corrupt regime in history.

On Monday, Oyedepo lamented the level of hardship imposed on Nigerians by corruption during a church program called Special Prayer for the Nation.The Federal Government, according to Oyedepo, claims to be fighting corruption, but its officials are also corrupt.

He claimed that the N80 billion allegedly stolen by the Accountant-General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris, would be sufficient to meet the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, or ASUU, which has resulted in school closures since February 14.

He said, “Many children are out of school, there is nothing to pay to get them back to school. We saw some folks in Covenant University that we had to help out to graduate. First-class students can’t get N30,000 to pay under this wicked government, selfish, self-centered.

Gunmen have kidnapped chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Jos East Local Government Area of Plateau State, Rev James Kantoma.

The Priest of St Anthony Parish in Angware community, The Nation learnt, was abducted at his house on Monday morning .

Plateau CAN Chairman, Polycarp Lubo, confirmed the abduction of the cleric.

Lubo said: “Since the gunmen took the Reverend Father away, we have not heard anything either from him or the abductors up till this afternoon.

“This is so sad. But we are praying for him that no harm will befall him wherever he is.

A resident of the community, Paul Aware, also confirmed abduction of the Reverend father to reporters in Jos on Monday.

Aware said: “When the gunmen arrived the community early hours of the morning , they moved straight to the house of the Reverend Father.
“Some youths in the area, who were alerted, tried to stop and even gave them a hot chase into the bush but the gunmen started shooting everywhere and eventually took the Reverend Father away.”

Plateau Police spokesman, Alabo Alfred, said that the Command was aware of the incident and had deployed officers and men from the anti-kidnapping unit to the community.

“Our men are already working to ensure that the Reverend father regains his freedom and apprehend those behind the abduction,” Alfred said.

He called for calm saying the police were on top of the situation .

Prof Jachimike Adiele, the co-host of The Forum, a public affair programme on Boss FM Radio located inside the All Seasons Hotel in Owerri, the Imo State capital, has been abducted by unidentified gunmen.

Miss Ijeoma Harriet, the co-host of the programme, who posted about the incident on Facebook, reported that Adiele was taken as soon as he stepped out of the premises.

“Some unidentified armed men stormed the premises of Boss Radio, Owerri, and abducted the co-host of The Forum, Prof Jachimike Adiele, to an undisclosed location,” Harriet stated.

One of the problems hampering the increase in visa appointments by the U.S. Mission in Nigeria is the manipulation of the visa appointment system by touts, Susan Tuller, the U.S. Consular Coordinator, has said.

Addressing journalists in Lagos Tuesday, Ms Tuller said the problem is particularly rife in Lagos.

”So, unfortunately, visa facilitators and travel agents, and some others manipulate our visa appointment system for their own financial gain,” she said.

“And even though in Lagos, they operate in the parking lot, right next door to our Consular operations, we really have little control over that because they’re not operating on our property and we can’t police them ourselves.

“Unfortunately, the visa facilitators here operate with impunity. They operate for financial gain. And as long as they are allowed to do that and as long as Nigerians continue to pay very high fees to them to get an appointment, that will likely continue and that makes it very hard for us to really control the number of visa appointments that we make available.”

On Tuesday, the U.S. Mission launched the ‘No-Interview Renewals‘ process, a new visa application procedure aimed at expanding services to assist non-immigrant visa applicants in the country to qualify to renew their visas.

U.S. visa application fee costs $160 and is valid for one year. But since the pandemic, the government has been extending the validity to enable people get more time for visa appointments. Ms Tuller said currently, worldwide, all U.S. visa fees are valid till September 30, 2023.

“I really want to reiterate that there’s no reason to pay any additional fees to a visa facilitator or travel agent,” the U.S. government official said.


“As of right now, there are thousands of appointments available for this no interview renewal programme, they are available online right now. And as long as you meet the criteria and follow the procedures that I’m about to describe, there is no reason to pay somebody to get that appointment.

“One of the real challenges with paying somebody for the appointment is that the visa facilitators use fake information to book these appointments. So then when you buy an appointment from them, you don’t know the information they’ve put in the system. Once the information is entered into the system, this system is part of your consular service record with us.

“And we see a lot of people who pay the facilitator who doesn’t even know what was used to book the appointment and then they come in and we are not able to see them because the information in the system doesn’t match the information they have on their passports and what they are telling us.

“I really urge people to do this themselves. Don’t pay somebody to do it for you and you don’t know what will come of that. All of the information is available to the public on ustraveldocs.com.”

Ms Tuller also said it is important for visa applicants to drop off their application in person, or if it is a family, by a member of the family.

“What we don’t want is to create a whole new industry for our visa facilitators to charge to drop off people’s passports. So we ask that you come in person and then if we have any questions we can ask you right then to make sure you have all the information that we need.”

Bello, who stated this after meeting behind closed doors with Buhari in Abuja on Tuesday, said it was not a decision of the party to exclude any aspirant from the APC primary.

He said, “It is a decision of a few elites, who may decide to use their whatever position to suppress the so-called minority, but I want to prove that in this country, I am not in the minority. We have the majority.”

Noting that he belongs to the majority and the younger generation of Nigerians, Bello, “I belong to the generation of Nigerians that are oppressed and they are saying they must have their voice.”
Bello expressed optimism saying he would win overwhelmingly at the APC primary arena (tonight) if the process and normal regulations are followed. “I will emerge victorious,” he said.

He said, “I respect President Muhammadu Buhari, the leader of our party and I respect the party. If the president asked me to step down, I would. Mr. President did not ask anyone to step down.
“Mr. President said let the delegates decide who becomes the flag bearer of the party and he did not say anyone should be excluded,” the governor added.

The governor of Kogi State had earlier warned that excluding his name on the ballot in the APC primary could be a recipe for trouble for the party.

Governor Bello is one of the 23 aspirants cleared to contest for the party’s presidential ticket in the 2023 election.
