Education / ASUU Breaks Apart, As New Faction, CONUA Is Established In UNIPORT by brownnikky16(f): 12:43pm On Nov 28, 2019 |
The Congress of University Academics (CONUA), a faction of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), says it has opened its branch at the University of Port Harcourt. The groups South-South National Deputy Coordinator 1, Dr. Iyawe Hanson, announced this to newsmen at a briefing in Port Harcourt on Wednesday. According to Hanson, the CONUA decided to open its branch in UNIPORT due to a lack of principles of justice, fairness, probity, and equity in its former body. “Also, the loss of accountability, transparency, non-adherence to constitutional provisions and erasure of the right of members to freely express their views led to the formation of CONUA. “Academic unionism in the country has failed to evolve and provide the necessary academic leadership and rational thoughts needed to adapt in the 21st-century advances in global tertiary education,’’ Hanson noted that dictatorial leadership in academic unionism had breeds discontentment among members leading to calls for a veritable alternative. He said CONUA had become the needed veritable alternative for all progressive minds in academics in the country. Quote “Consequently we are discarding militancy by embracing democratic tenets of approaching contending issues. “We know that nothing has bedeviled the fortunes of the Nigerian students like the incessant truncations of the academic calendar. A stable academic calendar is very important. “To this end, the academic staff union of UNIPORT has decided to take the bull by the horn, by joining CONUA. Their decision is laudable and historic,” he said. Hanson called on tertiary institutions in the country to emulate UNIPORT and join the union to restore and develop the nation’s educational system. Dr. Ovunda Ihunwo, the branch Chairman of CONUA in UNIPORT, said that academic staff in the university decided to join CONUA due to the alleged lack of due process in the UNIPORT branch of ASUU. He listed some of the reasons to include illegal suspension of Prof. Anthonia Okerengwo; illegal termination of the appointment of Prof. Frank Ugiomoh and the promotion of ethnic and regional disunity in the union, among others. “So, we have resolved, that henceforth we are not going to allow few selfish individuals to further cause crises by truncating stability and current smooth running in UNIPORT. “We shall cooperate with UNIPORT management and the university community on matters that are in the interest of students, staff members, and the enlightened public to stabilise the academic calendar. “We declare that from today, we no longer belong to ASUU. So, we call on the Vice-Chancellor to ensure the immediate stoppage of all check-offs from our members’ salaries to ASUU,” he demanded. Ihunwo further called on the university management to conduct a forensic audit into the disbursement of the last two tranches of the Earned Academic Allowances paid to workers. While some actresses detest going into relationship with their male counterparts, it’s not so for popular Nollywood actress, Kiki Omeili. The thespian, who dumped her degree in medicine for the klieg lights, says she might end up marrying an actor. Hear her: “When I meet that husband material of mine, I’d know. I have heard a lot of people roll out what they want in a partner and at the end of the day they marry someone who is the exact opposite. For me, I like a confident, hardworking, intellectual, and God fearing man. And he must be rich and comfortable, this is very important. By and large, when I meet him, I would know. I don’t limit myself, even if he’s an actor or he’s into entertainment, I don’t mind, as long as we are happy together.” On handling her social media fans, Kiki said: “I love my fans a lot. I have encountered embarrassing moments from some of them. There are times when they would jump on you without even knowing your mood or knowing you too well. “I also don’t listen to negative people or negative vibes. I don’t have that strength or space to entertain negativity. On social media, if I see any negative comment, I delete and block the person. That’s my strategy. Those people on social media always say hurtful things. I’m a very peaceful person and keep my private life, private.” Source: https://www.ogbeta.ng/2019/11/i-might-end-up-marrying-actor-actress.html

Politics / Lagos State Government Shuts Down Oyingbo Market by brownnikky16(f): 6:43am On Nov 22, 2019 |
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has put business activities on hold at the popular Oyingbo Market over sundry environmental infractions. Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director of LAWMA, said in a statement on Thursday that the infractions included indiscriminate refuse dumping and refusal to patronise Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators. Others were roadside trading and poor hygienic practices resulting in serious environmental problems in the area. Gbadegesin said that an abatement notice and several warnings issued to the traders yielded no result, thus necessitating the closure. He said that the market would be reopened when traders began to comply with the government’s rules and regulations by shunning indiscriminate refuse disposal and patronising assigned PSP operators. The LAWMA boss appealed to other markets in the state to imbibe the culture of effective waste disposal as markets whose activities were found detrimental to the health and environmental well being of the populace would be shut down until further notice. According to him, efforts of the state government to enthrone a sustainable environment are being undermined by some individuals who will rather dump refuse on unauthorised locations, hence the need for total enforcement. He warned that the grace period for environmental defaulters in the state had expired, as there would be total enforcement against all forms of illegal and reckless waste disposal capable of degrading the environment and posing health hazards to residents. “The act of indiscriminate refuse disposal in the city poses grave danger to public health and economic growth. “Before now, we adopted moral suasion as a tool to persuade residents to shun indiscriminate dumping. “In spite of our efforts, some people have bluntly refused to turn a new leaf. Now we have commenced total enforcement to put defaulters in check,” Gbadegesin said. The LAWMA boss noted that the Enforcement Unit of the agency had been mandated to work round the clock to clamp down on all environmental infractions capable of derailing efforts of the authority toward environmental sustainability in the state. “Section 115 (4) and 116 part IV, Environmental Sanitation Nuisances and Litters, as well as Section 81, Part III, Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) of Environmental Management and Protection Law 2017, prohibits dumping of waste at undesignated places, which attracts specified sanctions,” he said. Gbadegesin said that the agency recently published a public notice in major national dailies, stating various environmental offences and appropriate sanctions to defaulters. “The state’s laws are quite clear on the prohibition of illegal refuse disposal. It shows zero tolerance for environmental infractions and violators would be duly sanctioned to serve as deterrent to other residents,” he said. Gbadegesin called on residents to support efforts of the state government to establish a cleaner and healthier environment in Lagos by ensuring they bagged and containerised their wastes appropriately, as well as patronising assigned PSP operators. He said that LAWMA would continue the distribution of waste disposal bags under its Blue Box Initiative, for residents to sort their waste and dispose appropriately. The LAWMA boss said that residents should promptly contact the authority using the toll-free line 07080601020, for complaints and relevant information.
