Sports / Australia Passes Law To Pay Male And Female Footballers Equal Pay by brownnikky16(f): 10:31am On Nov 06, 2019
Australia’s professional women soccer players will be given the same base pay as men in a one-year extension to a collective bargaining agreement.

Players in Australia’s W-League will have their annual minimum remuneration hiked 33 percent to A$16,344 ($11,400), with their base hourly rate matching the men’s A-League, Football Federation Australia and the players union said on Friday.

“We’re very proud that we have been able to anchor the minimum conditions for W-League players to those of A-League players,”
Professional Footballers Australia CEO John Didulica said in a statement.

“It’s a moment in time that the players should be proud of.”

The deal will reduce the gender pay gap in Australian football but male players stand to earn significantly more due to their greater time on the pitch.

The W-League’s regular season ran for 14 weeks in 2018/19, just over half the length of the A-League’s 27 rounds.

The announcement comes days after the PFA launched a campaign demanding global governing body FIFA increase prize money at the upcoming women’s World Cup to reduce the glaring gap with the men’s tournament.

Gender pay disparity in football was put in the spotlight in March when the U.S. women’s team sued their national federation for alleged gender discrimination three months before their World Cup title defense.

Australia has become a global leader in championing better pay and conditions for female athletes in recent years, after having largely neglected women’s sport for decades.

Australia’s contracted women cricketers were given the same base hourly pay rate as men in a five-year collective bargaining agreement struck in 2017, although, like women footballers, they have far fewer opportunities to earn.

Celebrities / Kanye West Removes Tvs From Kids' Rooms, Kim Kardashian Reacts by brownnikky16(f): 8:13am On Nov 06, 2019
Kim Kardashian has revealed she and her husband Kanye West have had 'fights' over his religious journey since he became a 'born again' Christian.

The 39-year-old mother of four appeared with her sisters Kourtney and Khloe on The Real on Tuesday (Nov.5) and opened up about her 'fights' with her 42-year-old husband over his religious journey.

When asked if she supports her the husband's new spiritual life journey, she replied: 'I do think that, you know, he is my husband.

'So, I obviously want to honor him and what he’s feeling. And he’s been going through this life change, and it’s mostly about the kids.'

Kim also revealed that Kanye even went as far as removing the TVs in kids' rooms, as he has become increasingly cautious about the type of imagery that is in their home.

Kim explained: 'We got rid of TVs in the kids’ rooms and removed makeup from North's room – and he’s been very… had this, you know, epiphany of being this - not that he wasn’t an amazing dad - but being a little bit more strict as a dad and being very forceful on the imagery that’s in our household and what they see.

According to her, such drastic measures are good for their children but it has been difficult for her to take.

The reality star explained: 'But I’m always gonna be me… and so, we had that discussion and that fight.'

She said: 'I think, at the end of the day that’s what marriage is. He’s gonna do things that I don’t agree with, and I support him, and vice versa.

'So, with this, it was like we were like just having this conversation of what is too much and I am a mother of four, like, I am gonna be forty next year, like, when is it time to...'

This comes days Kanye West banned their six-year-old daughter North from wearing make-up and crop tops for same reason.

Education / NUT: 22 States Haven’t Recruited Teachers In 10 Years by brownnikky16(f): 3:59am On Nov 04, 2019
Twenty-two states have not recruited teachers for primary or secondary schools in the last five to 10 years, data from the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) have shown.

The figures showed that some states last recruited primary and secondary school teachers in 2002.

For example, Taraba, Niger, Adamawa, Ondo, Ogun and Delta states last held teachers recruitment for primary and secondary schools in 2002, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2010.

Other states where teacher recruitment has not taken place for over five years include Benue (2008), for primary and secondary; Nasarawa (2010), primary school; Bayelsa (2012); Ebonyi (2012); Rivers (2013), primary and secondary and Oyo (2014).

The last recruitment of teachers for primary and secondary schools in Kogi was in 2011, the data showed.

NUT National President Muhammed Idris said the union was not happy with this development, adding that classrooms in most states were almost empty.

Idris said the inability of some states to recruit teachers could create additional workload for the few on the ground, create overcrowded classrooms and lead to poor academic performance among the pupils.

The union leader also said the poor treatment of teachers in the country may result to Nigeria not meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on education.

Idris said: “We teachers have so many problems. We always tell government to address these problems so that Nigerian teachers will be happy. But, honestly, our teachers are not happy. That is why we insist on the extension of years of service for Nigerian teachers.

“In most states, our classrooms are almost empty. About 22 states have not recruited teachers for four to five years and teachers are retiring by the day. That is our main concern.

“You will go to classrooms and you will see almost 70 pupils inside without a teacher. Most of the states are running away from the cost of employing teachers.

“The remaining teachers on the ground are manning the schools. One teacher will attend three classes in a day. You will go to class five, four to do your work.”

The NUT president decried the poor conditions of teachers in some states.

According to him, this would impart negatively on the quality of education in the country.

“There is also the challenge of infrastructural decay in most of our schools. Our teachers teach under the shades. There are no classrooms; even in places where there are classrooms, there are no tables and chairs. How do you expect them to improve their productivity?

“Our teachers are ready to teach but the government is demoralising us. Majority of state governments are demoralising us as far as this profession is concerned. That is why we said let them address these issues and recruit more teachers to manage these schools,” Idris said.
