It’s been one year since Uber added tipping to its app. And, Uber said, it’s been good for drivers.

Drivers have earned more than $600 million in tips through the app in the US and Canada over the last year, the ride-hailing company said Thursday. Uber said that the longer tipping is available in the app, the more passengers hand over gratuities. For instance, in the first six months, Uber drivers earned $200 million in tips and in the last six months drivers earned $400 million.

Drivers had asked Uber to include in-app tipping for years, but the company insisted passengers appreciated the convenience of a tip-free ride. Finally, after months of strained driver relations over lower earnings, Uber launched tipping in June 2017.

“You told us what you want and it’s time we step up and give you the driving experience you deserve,” the company wrote on its website at the time. “Because simply put, Uber wouldn’t exist without you,”



Lyft rolled out in-app tips five years before Uber did. The smaller ride-hailing company announced in April that its drivers had earned $500 million in tips in the US over the last six years. Like Uber, passengers have tended to tip more over the years. More than half of those $500 million tips — $260 million — came in during 2017 alone.

Uber and Lyft have been in a tight competition to win over drivers — it’s crucial to their businesses. Without drivers the ride-hailing companies wouldn’t have passengers and without passengers the companies would fold.

Besides tipping, Uber has amped up other offerings for drivers. It added a feature that pays drivers extra if they have to wait for customers, along with 24/7 phone support and an easier passenger pickup system through the app. Uber has also started paying drivers to return riders’ lost items, like phones. And letting drivers know if they had a long trip ahead of them, so they can choose whether or not to accept that fare.

Lyft has also worked to make drivers happier. It has its corporate employees spend four hours every three months driving to better understand drivers work. It’s also expanded its driver support centers throughout the US. And on Wednesday, Lyft announced it was helping drivers with rising gas prices by giving them discounts at Shell stations.

Eromosele Peter, an Edo State-born graduate of Computer Engineering, Babcock University is a Nigerian musician who began his music-making craft with the formation of a music group called ‘The Corpershun Diaries’,TCD, while observing his compulsory National Youth Service Corp program. In this interview with Star Tracker, the budding singer speaks on his music, aspirations and what he’s doing to empower Nigerian youths .

What actually inspired you into music? Before I went to the university, I knew what I wanted to do. Like I said earlier, most of us go to school without studying their desired courses. I knew I was going to do music, but my parents didn’t support the idea at that time. With time, I have been able to gain their confidence. Last month, my dad spoke to me about dropping some projects to enable me concentrate more on my music; I just smiled because I know where I’m going. What’s your kind of music? I do inspirational music. Before you sing, you need to understand yourself as an artiste. Over time, understanding myself and my brand, I have realized that I like to make people happy. I’m not trying to blow my trumpet but I’m a selfless person, I believe in helping other people and making them happy. So I do inspirational music because that is where I find pleasure

Most music lovers enjoy Afro-pop and other genres, how do you intend to break into the market with your style of music? Sincerely, I’m not bothered about breaking into the Nigerian music scene and becoming an A-list artiste. In music, you need to know what you are doing. If you are doing the kind of music that cannot fetch you millions of naira every month, you need to get an alternative, but still do the music. That’s exactly what I’m doing and that’s why I have The Corpershun Diaries,TCD, and my media company. Have you any album out there? I have a single titled, ‘Arewa’ which I released in early this year. I also have ‘Adura’. We are planning to shoot a video for ‘Adura’ before the end of this month and it will be released in two months time. ‘Adura’ is a prayer for Nigeria. Do you intend to work with some of the established artistes? Of course, I would love to work with Davido. Although his style of music is different from mine, he inspires me a lot. I think Davido and Wizkid inspire every singer even if you are a gospel artiste. Wizkid started from scratch and look at where he is today, Davido is the exact opposite of Starboy. He has money and probably has no reason to work as hard as some of us. But he seems to be the most hardworking artiste in the industry. Apart from making music with him, I will also like to relate with him to know what his drive is and how he manages to drop hits back to back. Adene Eromosele Peter How did you come about The Corpershun Diaries (TCD)? TCD is an empowerment and motivational platform that is established to showcase and promote on a national and international scale, the skills, hustle and talents of Nigerian youths; to create opportunities, empower and motivate the Nigerian youths and also promote networking opportunities without having to entirely depend on financial backing from anybody, be it their parents, family members or anybody at all. The pressure to conform to societal norms has made a lot of us get degrees in our least desired courses. Over and again, this is still happening and it is inevitable, this leaves us with a lot of graduates that are sad and do not feel accomplished. Most times, those that studied their desired courses end up with jobs that they do not want. People say there are no jobs, let’s imagine there are no jobs, what about people that go out of their way to make something for themselves; people that train themselves in their desired careers without studying the same in school. Now, the economy is ‘blessed’ and it is hard for people to chase their dreams, it is even hard for them to sustain such dreams because at the end of the day, they might have to get a job in order to survive. This is why The Corpershun Diaries is here. We try to help as many youths as we can reach in Nigeria. We create networking opportunity for everyone anywhere across Nigeria. How do you achieve all these? We have different departments, one of which is Yute Bants. Yute is a slang for youth in the UK and Bant means speaking. Yute Bants is our podcast department that trains On Air Personalities (OAP). It is often hard for people to get jobs if they don’t have experience. So, we are that experience that people need, we go out of our way to take the ‘risk’ because this is a learning phase. Another platform is the Amebo Concern; this is our script writing department where we train the writing skills of our members. Moving on we have Brown Khaki, this is a series that is coming out soon in July. We are training actors, producers, directors, sound engineers and everyone aiming for a career success in the movie industry. We also have Arry which is our grand app that has the capacity to connect service providers with the users of their services all across Nigeria. Lastly, we have Belleful Naija where we give back to people around us by feeding them. How do you manage your music and TCD? It has not been easy because I fund TCD with the money I make from my music. This is the beginning stage and the youths I work with do not have jobs and I understand that. So, I need to be serious with my music and that is why I’m shooting a video for my new song in order to generate funds.

Considering the name ‘The CorperShun Diaries’, is your team just Corps members? TCD started when I was serving in 2017. When we started we were focusing on empowering corps members but now, it is bigger than that. Corps members on our platform and people that have not exceeded a year post service have an extra privilege but the platform is open to every youth. We have over a thousand youths that we are empowering at the moment and not all of them are corps members.

Have you had any challenge with crowd funding being mistaken for a fraud scheme?

Yes we have had our share of these shortcomings and it has helped us to grow. It has not been easy but it has been amazing. Is TCD achieving its purpose? Yes it is. We are getting amazing results. People are giving testimonies every week within Lagos and beyond. I’m talking about people all over Nigeria. The feedback has been amazing

''Buhari, call your security agents to order'' Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed concerns over the alarm by former President Olusegun Obasanjo that the Federal Government plans to arrest him using trumped up charges.

In a statement he released yesterday evening, the former Vice President who served under Obasanjo, said the alarm raised by the former president is disturbing. He called on President Buhari to call his security agents to order. The former Vice President stressed that Obasanjo is a historical figure in Nigeria's democracy.

I have received with serious concern the purported alert raised by former President Olusegun Obasanjo of an alleged plot by the government to arrest him on trumped up charges.


I am disturbed by this turn of events in our dear country considering the huge price that was paid for us to have democracy.

I wish to advise that government and its agents should retrace their steps to avoid aggravating the already over heated polity.

The alert by President Obasanjo is coming against the backdrop of earlier alerts by some leaders, especially those of the opposition of deliberate and orchestrated attempt to intimidate and frame them up.

I wish to state without equivocation that President Obasanjo is a historical figure in Nigeria’s democracy and that the primary purpose of government is to provide security of lives and property of all citizens and residents irrespective of their status, political affiliation, religious inclination and ethnic leanings.

Our nation has lost so much precious lives and property that we can no longer afford to travel that road again.

I wish to appeal to President Buhari to call the security agencies to order in order to douse the tension in the land.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is alarmed by the revelation of former President Olusegun Obasanjo that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government is plotting to arrest him on trumped up charges and detain him indefinitely.


PDP says the revelation coming from a Nigerian of Chief Obasanjo status is terrifying as it has heightened the tension in the polity and confirmed our fears that our dear nation has descended into a police state where any Nigerian, who holds a divergent view to President Muhammodu Buhari 2019 re-election bid, becomes endangered.

The alarm by Chief Obasanjo has further shown that the PDP has not been crying wolf regarding the plots by the APC Federal Government to frame, arrest, detain and arraign political opponents of the APC, including regular Nigerians, for holding or canvasing opinions that are divergent to the interest of those in power.

We invite Nigerians to note the travails faced by perceived opponents of Buhari Presidency including Senate President Bukola Saraki, Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, Senators Shehu Sani and Dino Melaye, who had raised similar alarms in the past.

The PDP urges Nigerians to note how APC controlled security forces, on Wednesday, arrested and detained opposition members in Ogun state, including a member of the House of Assembly, Hon Adebiyi Adeleye, who were going about their legitimate activities, only to tag them as cultists.

The PDP condemns APC’s resort to persecution, intimidation, harassment and framing of our members, as well as dissenting voices, just to suppress the opposition ahead of the 2019 election.

PDP wants the APC and Buhari Presidency to note that no amount of coercion, intimidation and illegal arrests will alter the determination of Nigerians to vote out the dysfunctional APC and rescue our nation from the shackles of the Buhari Presidency and its misrule, come 2019.

COMING to a close with nine winners, this year’s edition of Hi-Life Fest, a talent hunt show on Igbo highlife music and cultural dance, has earned the winners  a total prize of N6, 600,000.

The winner in the highlife music category, Dons Ifeanyi from Anambra State, received a cheque of N2m  while the winner in the cultural dance category, Umuchiziri Dance Group, led by Chuzzy Anene, was presented with N2m and decorated as Life Royalty dance group.

It was jubilation galore for the winners, their team members and supporters at the grand finale.

Chuks Arthur Uwazie, was also rewarded as the first runner-up in the Highlife music category, with a cheque of N500, 000, while Kalapi Ojuka, who came third, got N400,000 as compensation. Also, Obiajulu Adachi and Agbom Emanuel received N300,000 and N200,000 for emerging fourth and fifth respectively.

The second runner-up in the cultural dance category, Port-Harcourt based Kanaowo Cultural Dance Group, received N500, 000, while the third runner-up group, Asinodrick Cultural Dance Group, received N400,000.
Most of the winners said they would plough their prize money back into their trade, by getting more instruments to improve their artistry.

Although Chuks Arthur was silent on his plans, he commended Nigerian Breweries for coming up with such a wonderful competition, that has provided many aspiring artistes hope for the future.

HiLife Fest traditional music talent hunt started on March 18 with over 700 contestants who registered and were screened across the southeast including, Aba, Port-Harcourt, Asaba, Onitsha, Owerri, Nsukka and Abakaliki.

The younger sister of Queen Maxima of the Netherlands has died at the age of 33. A spokesperson confirmed the news saying, “we have to announce that the queen’s sister died in Buenos Aires.”

Queen Maxima and her sister, Ines Zorreguieta, were both born into an Argentinian family. The queen has cancelled all her scheduled appearances until June 15, including visits to Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania, a palace statement said. Her husband, King Willem-Alexander will now make the appearances alone.

In a message of condolence, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte described the news as “a big shock.’’

Broadcaster NOS reported that Zorreguieta had been receiving treatment for psychiatric problems. The palace spokesperson said the death was a “suspected suicide.’’

Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold's new album has made it to the top 10 world album chart on Billboard.

Billboard is a music industry standard record chart published weekly by Billboard magazine. The charts are recorded based on sales, radio play and online streaming.

Adekunle Gold's album, About 30, was released on May 25 and its contains 15 tracks, plus two bonus tracks. The singer said the album came at a time when he is in his 30s and he used it as an opportunity to addresss issues that affect a man of his age.

Reacting to this new feat, Adekunle Gold went on his social media account to thank his fans, saying: "That's ya boy on #9. Thank you guys. You did it. I didn't."

Recently, in an exclusive interview, Adekunle Gold said he did not know that managing fame was going to be hard.

"I don't miss not being famous because I was broke; I can't lie," he said. "I wanted this fame but i no know say the thing go dey hard."

Hafsat Abiola-Costello, daughter of MKO Abiola, is “full of gratitude” to President Muhammadu Buhari for declaring June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day in place of the May 29 that has been celebrated since 1999.

Aside the declaration, Buhari also announced that MKO Abiola would be posthumously awarded the highest honour in the land, GCFR, on June 12, 2018, while Ambassador Baba Gana Kingibe, his running mate, is to be invested with a GCON. Gani Fawehinmi SAN is to be awarded posthumously a GCON.

Reacting, Abiola-Costello said no words could capture “the depth of my gratitude nor the breadth of my joy”.

She said she had waited in vain for many years but she lost hope when it became clear that there was a plan to erase her dad’s name from the country’s democracy.

“I had expected that the handover from military rule to democracy would be held on the 12th of June. That would have signalled the completion of a circle that began with a dream deferred,” said Abiola-Costello, President of Kudirat Initiative for Democracy (KIND) who, just days ago, was appointed Executive President of Women in Africa (WIA) initiative.

“That became one fulfilled. But I waited in vain. The handover was set for May 29, a date pulled out of thin air, signifying nothing.

“Then I thought that the chief beneficiary would ask the country to observe a minute of silence. In memory of MKO, Kudirat, Alfred Rewane, Umaru Yar’Adua, Bal Kaltho, the thousands of students, the tens of journalists, traders and politicians who lost their lives fighting to actualise an unjustly annulled election.

“Again, I waited in vain for he started his inauguration speech…and nothing was said. The first four years passed and it became clear that the goal was to erase the name of the man whose sacrifice paved the way for our democracy.

“Those four years set the tone. And I got tired of waiting. As it slowly became clear that to wait was to wait in vain.

“May we live to witness many more days when justice triumphs over injustice, when sacrifice and service win over arrogance and fraud, and when the blood of our heroes reach from across time to boldly claim the reward that their actions wrought.

“I stopped expecting my country to do the right thing by my father and instead began to understand why Nigeria struggles to find patriots among its leaders. Until today.

“Today when President Muhammadu Buhari gave an executive order to declare that June 12 was Nigeria’s Democracy Day. To confer on MKO the title of GCFR, an honour reserved for presidents of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“To confer on Gani Fawehinmi, the dogged fighter for justice, and my father’s running mate, Babagana Kingibe, the title of GCON, the second highest honour in the land.

“And in one day, it got demonstrated to my bruised heart that integrity, fairness, honour were alive and well in a country for which both my parents had sacrificed their lives.

“There are no words that can capture the depth of my gratitude nor the breadth of my joy. I thank God that I am alive to witness this day.

The policeman whose gunshot injured former member of the House of Representatives, Michael Opeyemi Bamidele and five others at a reception rally by the All Progressives Congress (APC) last Friday, has been dismissed from the police force.

The Commissioner of Police, Ekiti Command, Mr. Bello Ahmed, made this known while featuring on a live television programme, aired in Ado Ekiti, yesterday.

This was just as the CP read riot act to politicians in the state yesterday, warning them to abide by the rules governing the conduct of election to prevent anarchy in the state.

He said the command won’t fold its arms and allow people to breach the 1999 constitution and the Electoral Act in the name of election.

He said the meeting convened for stakeholders to brainstorm on how to ensure peaceful conduct of the coming governorship election and that the riot act has been read to them to serve as a guided principle.

The Police boss assured that his men will be neutral in the July 14 election and won’t do anything that would make them look as if they were working for a certain political party.

“What I want from men is professionalism. We are going to be guided by the instrumentality of the law, because this election is going to be a different ball game.”

A conference aimed at agreeing a roadmap to reunify Libya is being held in Paris today.

The meeting will bring together Fayez Seraj, who heads the United Nations-backed unity government in western Libya, and the militia leader, Khalifa Haftar, whose Libyan National Army dominates the east of the country.

France hopes the two sides will commit themselves to hold nationwide elections by the end of the year.

Harvey Weinstein was arraigned Friday on charges of first- and third-degree rape and committing a criminal sexual act in the first degree, seven months after women began to come forward with stories alleging sexual misconduct by the famed Hollywood producer.The charges filed Friday stem from incidents with two separate women in 2013 and 2004, the Manhattan district attorney said in a statement, and were the result of a joint investigation between police and the Manhattan DA’s office.
