The House of Representatives on Wednesday urged the Federal Government to fix dates for national census scheduled in the fourth quarter of 2019.


The lawmakers lamented that different figures were being bandied around as government has failed to count its own people many years after the last exercise.

Under “Matters of Urgent Public Importance”, Rep. Ossy Prestige (Abia-APGA), harped on the need to conduct the census for proper planning and development in Nigeria.


Prestige quoted United Nations Fund for Population Activities as saying that Nigeria had a dynamic economy and large population expected to double in the next two decades.

He said that census was pivotal and necessary tool for the growth of any emerging society, which in turns informed decision-making at all facets of public and private sector.

Prestige pointed out that the last census was held in 2006, and that the nation’s population then was estimated at 140,431,790 million with estimated growth of less than three per cent yearly.


The lawmaker expressed concern that the lack of up-to-date and accurate data on the population in Nigeria had affected national planning and development at all levels that culminated in human and agricultural insecurity in Nigeria.

He said that a census based on biometric data would capture all Nigerians, adding that it would also help to solve problems of infiltration and internal security including kidnapping, terrorism and armed robbery.

The motion was unanimously adopted by members when it was put to a voice vote by the Speaker, Mr Yakubu Dogara.

The House, therefore, urged the government to make provisions for census funds in 2019 Budget and also appealed to international communities to support same.

It further asked the Federal Government to mobilise the NPC for the completion of Enumeration Area Demarcation and preliminary preparation of the census.

The House also mandated its Committee on Legislative Compliance to liaise with the NPC for strict compliance and report back to it for further legislative action.

My sister Diane had a date with a fellow, Omelan Mycyk, for high school graduation dance in Chester, Pennsylvania, in 1963, and Omelan brought his best friend, Harry, to be my date. What I notice in this government is that every elected office holder has the free will to operate. Hardly you see a senator being forced to like his governor neither would you see a sitting governor being commanded forceful by a god father. Everyone expressing his/her opinion willingly. And this is where the problem lies for a coalition force. Nobody will be ready to surrender or submit his/her leadership for another person. The Secretary General, Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore Fulani Socio-Cultural Association, Saleh Alhassan, has insisted that herdsmen did not perpetrate killings in Benue, Plateau and Taraba States.

Alhassan said those who set up vigilance groups in those states should be held responsible.

He lamented that the groups acted beyond their limits and took laws into their own hands.

He said: “Every crisis has its own uniqueness. If you go to Taraba, like the one on the Mambilla Plateau, the ongoing project on the Mambilla dam and the compensation that would be paid to communities who own land runs into millions and that is causing issues because the herders that own the land and some elites.

“Some herdsmen bought the land, with title documents, on them, but now, some elites want to be the ones to collect the compensation and they are killing the herdsmen. When you talk about Zamfara, it’s a pure banditry created by some elites in the state. Now that the whole thing has dawned on them, they are looking for whom to blame.

“They created the vigilance group, comprising farmers. We went there in 2014 and said the vigilance group was carrying out arrest and extra-judicial killing of herdsmen, by tagging them as criminals.

“They became law unto themselves and as a consequence of that, the herdsmen also created their own vigilance group. So, the two vigilance groups started fighting and both have become criminals and monsters that are lawless.”

The founder of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari has called on the people in the Middle Belt region to stop crying like babies.

He said they should rather protect themselves against attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen.

He called on the people of Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Taraba and Nasarawa to rise up in their own defence and stop the consumption of cow meat.

Speaking in an interview with Saturday PUNCH, Dokubo-Asari said: “They should stop crying like babies and stop behaving like cowards because the people who are killing them are not gods. The first law of survival is self defence.

“Till today, people in Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Taraba and Kogi states are still eating their cows. Those of us that are not eating their cows are extremists. It is shameful that the people of Middle Belt are crying like babies and other people are killing them. Don’t they have hands to defend their lives?

“They have every right to defend themselves. They should protect themselves and stop complaining.”

Biafra Nations Youth League, has condemned the statement credited to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Boss Mustapha that his re-election will pave way for Igbo Presidency.

National Leader of BNYL, Princewill Richard said Igbo presidency “cannot quench the agitations for Biafra.”

In a statement sent to Dailypost, Richard said, “It’s an insult to exchange Biafra with Igbo Presidency, if the Igbo wants Presidency they should take it, not when it is being given to them, because whoever gives you something would take it at any point in time.

“Take for example, Goodluck Jonathan was given Presidency and the same people collected it.”

Richard also accused the President of trying to hoodwink the people of South East region “who are not in anywhere found in his government”.

The group said the alleged marginalization of ethnic groups of the former Eastern region cannot be addressed by Igbo Presidency.

BNYL further disclosed that the group has taken over grassroots structures in some towns in Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Rivers State where it enjoys more support at the grassroots.

“Our members have taken over some community youth leadership, and Okada Union in towns like Ikom, Obudu, Bakassi, Esit-Eket, Onna,Oyigbo and Andoni.

“We participate in every community elections because without these grassroots structures we have leakages in the struggle,” he said

Bolaji Rosiji, a former president of Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria, PMAN, appeared before the Ebute Metta magistrate court for allegedly defrauding a financial institution of N22 million.

Rosiji is facing trial on an eight-count charge bordering on stealing, obtaining money under false pretences, issuing of a dud cheque, obstruction of justice and threat to life. He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Kehinde Omisakin, the police prosecutor, told the court that the offences were committed sometime in May 2017, June 30, and June 29 at Modupe Johnson Crescent, off Adeniran Ogunsanya Street, Surulere. She said the accused had approached Crystal Finance Ltd for a loan of N22 million which he claimed was to facilitate the launching of new pharmaceutical products. He also claimed that it would be used to finance advance payments for musical artists and venue reservation for Nigeria/India Cultural Festival which was to hold in October 2017.

“When it was time to pay back the loan, the accused issued a dud cheque and also threatened and obstructed policemen who went to execute a warrant for his arrest. He had also threatened that the policemen would die if they touch his spiritual stick. The accused also tore the Lagos state government biometric data issued to him” she said.



The offences contravened Sections 56, 112, 172, 287, 314, 319, 350 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. A.O. Komolafe, the chief magistrate, granted the accused bail in the sum of N5 million with two responsible sureties in like sum and adjourned the case till September 6
