Former Arsenal star, Tony Adams has advised the club’s current players to kick and rough handle midfielder, Mesut Ozil, during trainings to help bring the best out of him. Adams said the German needed to be roughened up if he is to turn his Arsenal form around. Ozil, who is Arsenal’s highest paid player, has endured a slow start to the season, with the Gunners back-to-back defeats to Manchester City and then local rivals, Chelsea. Adams, who captained Arsenal during a brilliant era of success under Arsene Wenger, believes the current crop of players are too soft Metro UK quoted Adams as saying, “If you have solidity and strength in your team, then Ozil is a great asset. “He’s a World Cup winner and a class act,’ said Adams. ‘He’s like Bergkamp, who cruised through his first couple of years at the Arsenal “We had to get him a little bit toughened up but Ozil hasn’t got the people around him to push him and get him going. “There’s only so much a coach can do. It starts in training. We used to kick Dennis. “Steve Bouldy would kick him up in the air again and again. ‘After a while of this he turned round and stamped on Bouldy and said ‘I’ve had enough of you effing kicking me, you’re going to get a little bit back here’. We all said ‘aye, aye, he’s a got a bit about him — Hallelujah’” https://www.vondanews.com/epl-why-arsenal-players-should-kick-roughen-ozil-tony-adams/?preview=true

Alex Iwobi has been told by Nwankwo Kanu that he is a “star in his own right” and needs to embrace such a standing at Arsenal. “For me he’s a special kid. Arsenal know the quality he has got and they know he can deliver on that eventually”. Nigeria’s forward Alex Iwobi heads the ball during a training session at the Essentuki Arena, southern Russia, on June 18, 2018 during the Russia 2018 World Cup football tournament. The 22-year-old is a product of a famed academy system in north London, having linked up with the Gunners as a schoolboy. He has graduated through the ranks to make 98 senior appearances, but is yet to show his full potential on a consistent basis at club level. Iwobi has no such problems when representing his country, having become a talismanic presence for Nigeria, and his fellow countryman wants to see him fill a similar role domestically. Arsenal striker Kanu told Standard Sport: “In Arsenal you have big, big names. I don’t think he sees himself in that way. “When I talk with him I want him to feel that way. http://www.vondanews.com/iwobis-special-kanu/

Sex workers in Anambra State have threatened to starve policemen who patronise them over alleged harassment and arrest of their colleagues in major cities of the state. One of the sex workers, simply identified as Kaamsi, who claimed to be a leader of the group in Umunze in the Orumba South Local Government Area of the state, told Saturday PUNCH on Friday that her members in the state had decided to starve policemen. Kamsi, a leader of the group of prostitutes, said they would commence the decision as from Monday next week. She said, “These policemen constitute over 50 per cent of our customers, yet they come here at the garden to harass and intimidate us on daily basis. “About two days ago, no fewer than 10 of our members here were arrested and taken to SARS office. They were maltreated and so dehumanised before they were granted bail and asked to pay through their noses before they regained freedom. “This happens on daily basis here in Umunze, Onitsha, Awka, Nnewi, Ekwulobia, everywhere. So, we have decided that none of our members would ‘serve’ any policeman here in Umunze and the entire state.” Asked whether the policemen came to them in their uniforms, Kamsi said, “We know them; we know almost all our customers. They don’t need to come to us in their uniforms to be identified. “Brother, let me tell you, we get information here. All big men that come here, we know them up to their family level.” Saturday PUNCH gathered that about a week ago, the Anambra Police Command raided brothels in various cities in the state and arrested no fewer than 120 persons. According to reports, the police raided Morning Star Hotel, Amawbia, Awka South Council Area, arresting about 20 persons. The report further said that on Sunday, the police raided Happiness Hotel in Amanwayi, Amawbia at about noon, arresting about six women alleged to be prostitutes. The source further alleged that the police also raided Dot4 Hotel, Mgbakwu and Bolin Hotel Nise, as well as another hotel in Ogidi, in the Idemili North Council Area, where about 60 persons were arrested. Other areas raided, our correspondent gathered, were Amansea, Umunze, Onitsha and Ihiala. Kamsi said, “The suspects were raided and bailed with N10,000 each. The police have used such raids for making money.” http://www.vondanews.com/prostitutes-threaten-to-starve-policemen-of-sex-over-incessant-arrests/ |
As the competition for the presidential ticket of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party gets stiffer in the run-up to the 2019 general elections, the party has said that it will rely on Nigerians to help the party choose its candidate for the presidential election. The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, in an exclusive interview with Saturday PUNCH on Friday, said the party had heard that many people, including a former Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar; Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki; Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal; his colleague in Gombe State, Ibrahim Dankwambo; and a former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, were interested in picking its presidential ticket. As the competition for the presidential ticket of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party gets stiffer in the run-up to the 2019 general elections, the party has said that it will rely on Nigerians to help the party choose its candidate for the presidential election. He, however, said the decision to rely on Nigerians was premised on the party’s determination to avoid past mistakes, impunity and imposition of candidates. According to Ologbondiyan, the party is not backing any of those in line to get its presidential ticket. Others interested in getting the party’s presidential tickets are a former Minister of Education, Ibrahim Shekarau; former governors of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido and Ibrahim Turaki; and a former Governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa. He said, “As a party, we have so many candidates already, but Nigerians will determine their next president. “Nigerians are desirous of change; there is no argument about that. All of these factors will come to play in selecting our presidential candidate. “Nigerians will signpost who they believe should lead them. We want to produce a credible candidate. Nigerians will sing the song of the one they want to lead them; the party doesn’t have any candidate yet.” He added, “Currently, there are debates over the age of who should be our President, whether the President should be young or old. Therefore, there are so many aggregations of opinions, so what Nigerians say about the kind of candidate they want will inform our choice. “We don’t want the party to be damaged again over allegations of imposition.” Since President Muhammadu Buhari declared his intention to seek re-election in 2019, there have been discussions in political circles about who can successfully challenge him at the poll, especially in the opposition parties. In a bid to challenge the ruling APC, the PDP and no fewer than 30 parties had recently formed a coalition in readiness for the next general elections. Called the Coalition of United Political Parties, the collaborating parties and associations had signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly present candidates for elective positions. However, this has not stopped some members of the PDP from signifying interest in getting the main opposition party’s presidential ticket. Meanwhile, sources in the PDP have told Saturday PUNCH that the recent defection of Tambuwal and Kwankwaso has altered political calculations among some members of the party. It was learnt that with the two leading politicians’ interest in the presidential ticket of the party, the number of strong contenders for the party’s ticket from the North-West had increased to five. The North-West, which arguably accounts for the highest number of votes per zone, is Buhari’s traditional political stronghold. The zone is home to seven states, the highest number in Nigeria’s six geo-political zones structure. A top ranking member of the party, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of retribution, said, “Before now, the former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido; his former Kaduna State counterpart, Ahmed Makarfi, and a former Minister of Special Duties, Tanimu Turaki (SAN), were the most visible contestants from the North-West. “All three lay claim to their fidelity to the cause of the PDP throughout the years as strong selling points.” This was earlier corroborated by Lamido in an interview with Sunday PUNCH, when he said, “If we (those who remained) had left the PDP like others, would there have been a PDP to return to?” Until Tambuwal’s recent defection, the PDP had no sitting governor in the entire zone. However, the arrival of Tambuwal and Kwankwaso in the picture has renewed PDP’s confidence of giving the APC and its candidate a good fight. Authoritative sources within the PDP told one of our correspondents that Tambuwal had consulted widely on his presidential ambition before his decision to dump the APC, on which platform he was elected governor in 2015. Some of the sources, who were privy to the workings within and outside the party, said Tambuwal was being considered as a possible candidate because of his age, educational background, cosmopolitan nature and experience. It was gathered that the former Speaker’s experience in the legislature was also being considered as an added advantage as he was initially to challenge Buhari for the APC ticket in 2014, but had decided to contest the governorship of Sokoto State. Kwankwaso’s supporters, on the other hand, argue that his popularity in his home state of Kano, which is reputed to have accounted for Buhari’s 1.9 million votes in 2015, and the support he enjoys in other states in the North is “as good as that of the President in the region.” Kwankwaso, who was second only to Buhari during the 2014 APC presidential primary, is being considered as someone that could pose a threat to Buhari’s re-election bid. The former Kano State governor has however left the decision about his political future in the hands of the party. Kwankwaso’s spokesperson, Binta Spikin, said, “I don’t know about that (presidential ambition) because now that he is in the PDP, it is for the party to decide whether it will hold a primary or adopt a candidate. “I don’t know about that. Until the party speaks, I cannot say anything on that. I can only hope that the party sees the potential in Senator Kwankwaso and give him the ticket.” Another source in the PDP, who also spoke on condition of anonymity so as not to be seen as taking sides, said, “The candidate that the PDP needs is someone who has the capacity to deflate the support base of President Buhari (especially) in the northern part of the country. “It should be someone who is seen as representing the entire country and will not treat those who didn’t vote for him with less attention. Both men are believed to be popular in the northern part of the country.” However, Director of Media and Publicity, Atiku Presidential Campaign, Mr. Segun Sowumi, expressed confidence that the party would see what his principal is to offer and give him the chance to be its presidential candidate. He said, “Atiku has over the years been convinced that Nigeria can be great and he also believes that so much of the greatness that people believe Nigeria can be rests on the leadership and he has also had the opportunity of being inside and outside government and knows what needs to be done.” One of Saraki’s loyalists in the Senate, who also spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media, explained that the Senate President was under pressure to join the presidential race. The source said, “He is seriously under pressure by so many groups, friends in business, politicians – senators and governors, traditional rulers and others. But as you may know, he is somebody who listens more and will only smile than say what he will do.” http://www.vondanews.com/presidential-candidate-nigeriansll-help-us-choose-among-saraki-tambuwal-atiku-kwankwaso-others-says-pdp-2/

An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Ekiti State, Dr. Olusegun Osinkolu, has declared that the incoming government of Dr. Kayode Fayemi won’t make probing the outgoing governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, its priority as is being envisaged. In a statement issued in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday, Osinkolu said although Fayemi would look into financial books of the state under the PDP-led government, he won’t be vindictive as is being suggested in some quarters. He spoke in response to a statement credited to the Special Assistant to the Governor on Public Communications, Lere Olayinka, where he alleged that Fayemi specifically sought reelection in the July 14 poll to afford him the opportunity to extract vengeance from Fayose. The senatorial aspirant stated that the main focus of the incoming APC government is to fight poverty and restore the already debased dignity and honour for which the state was widely respected. He said Fayose is a non-issue to an average APC person, including Fayemi, adding that the issue of the present Governor can’t take preeminence over the corporate interest of Ekiti masses when the next government assumes office. Osinkolu said, “Dr. Fayemi was in government for four years and all the 133 towns and villages in the state felt democratic dividends under that government. “If you check your records, Fayose had been victimizing Fayemi in the last one year. In fact, he took Dr Fayemi’s probe as one cardinal point that must be accomplished at all cost. The governor concocted so many lies to smear the image of the former Minister in a bid to stop his governorship ambition , but all these antics failed. “If you look at the slogan of our party prior to the last election, it was chiefly anchored on Reclaiming Our Land, Restoring our values. So, this is going to be the focal point of our government. “The 8-point agenda already initiated to be our policy guidelines was loaded and this will take more of our times in a bid to ensure that Ekiti savour the gains of democracy they have been deprived under Fayose. “But let me say that APC as a party of progressives won’t subscribe to looting of public treasury under any guise. It won’t tolerate pilfering of the state’s commonwealth . So, we are going to look into the financial records of Fayose’s government and whoever found to have looted will be made to face the wrath of the law. “But let me state expressly that probing Governor Fayose won’t come in a vindictive fashion but in accordance to the rule of law. We won’t behave the way he had done to our party, because we are coming to government to serve the people and not to victimize anybody,” he said. Osinkolu appealed to the Senator Olubunmi Adetumbi-led APC transition committee to be thorough to be able to prepare grounds on how Fayemi can have a smooth take off when he assumes office on October 16. He urged the 32-man committee to relate well with all stakeholders, including the government of the day, in a bid to get the full gist of what actually transpired under the present administration in Ekiti. http://www.vondanews.com/ekiti-handover-probing-fayose-wont-be-fayemis-priority-apc-chieftain/

Hold Oshiomhole, Masari responsible if anything happens to me – R-APC chairman, Galadima Chairman of the Reformed All Progressives Congress (R-APC), Buba Galadima, has asked Nigerians to hold the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole and their National Welfare Officer, Ibrahim Masari, responsible if anything happens to him. In an interview with Vanguard, Galadima claimed Oshiomhole is an “usurper”, who was not among those who signed APC’s Memorandum of Association. He also made reference to statements made by Oshiomhole, where the former Edo Governor vowed to “crush” him”. “I have read the new national chairman say there are still PDP members in APC and they should go. “Oshiomhole was not part of the APC. When we were signing the memorandum of association with other parties that formed the APC, Oshiomhole was not there. I didn’t see his signature and I didn’t see his face. I look at him as a usurper but I want to say; you know desperate people and drowning people can do anything. “Adams Oshiomhole, the purported chairman of APC and Ibrahim Masari, the purported national welfare officer have made statements in the press, both in print and electronic media that they will crush me. That means that they can kill me. “So, should anything happen to me, the nation and the world should hold them responsible. They can use state powers to detain me. They can use state powers to eliminate me. I want this to be on record and I want this recorded. To crush means anything. “They have no confidence in themselves in engaging me in a public discourse for the world to know who is right and who is wrong. So, they want to use extra means to deal with me. I have the papers; I have the audio and the video,” Galadima said. http://www.vondanews.com/hold-oshiomhole-masari-responsible-if-anything-happens-to-me-r-apc-chairman-galadima/

A Third Republic Senator and erstwhile Minister, Prof. Iyorwuese Hagher has said that there was nothing like herdsmen/farmers clash going on in the Middle Belt. He insisted that President Muhammadu Buhari should step down for a person from the Middle Belt. According to him, what was happening was genocide against farmers. The former lawmaker said this while fielding questions from Sun, where he also gave reasons the Middle Belt should produce the next president. The former ambassador, who recently wrote a memo to Buhari, maintained that Nigeria was a failed nation. He said, “The first time in this country by all standard, globally what we have is an agenda against the Middle Belt. “There is nothing like herdsmen/farmers clashes over lands. There is genocide against farmers in the Middle Belt and in one instance or two there is a counter attack against the Fulani ethnic group. “If genocide is bad, we should not accept it. There has been genocide in our country. This is not the first time people are killing themselves. But with the speed that this one came, it’s a clear indication that we have a government that cannot defend its people. “Even if those videos are not true, Nigeria is a failed state, or a failing state. We have the highest number of IDP camps in the world apart from Syria which is in a full blown war. “We have ethnic genocide and the President, who is to rein the killer herdsmen in, is unable to categorise them as terrorists and all he says is that ‘there is nothing I can do, only pray.’ “We didn’t elect an Imam as President ,we are not in a theocracy, we elected the President of a federal republic and not a kingdom. No matter the pretence of anyone in power to become a king, this is not a kingdom, it is not theocracy it is democracy. “Therefore , if it is failing it is expected that the leader surrenders and say there is nothing I can do about it, I am wrong. We need to rebuild this country and rebuilding this country means he has to step down because campaigning now as a candidate versus the other candidates, it’s for him to enforce apparatus of state institution. “And when that is done and he wins the election, he will create more conditions that will lead to more death. I am sorry I love the country more than my personal ambition. Far far too many lives have gone and we are at war. The condition to determining when a country has reached war status is 1000. We have surpassed 1000. “Middle Belt has suffered for this country, it has laboured under gross injustice . It is from the Middle Belt that the bulk of slave trade took our young men to Europe and America. “Out of the 400 ethnic groups of the North, the Middle Belt has over 340 tribes. The Middle Belt is the most backward, it is the most disorganised because it is structurally made to be so. May be the time has come for that Nigerians conscious mind to look into the Middle Belt, find a Middle Belter who can become president and unite this country. “Our ethnic groups are small and they cannot threaten national stability. No ethnic group in Middle Belt will be strong enough to make demands from every aspect of the country . The region requires and needs the rest of the country.” http://www.vondanews.com/2019-why-buhari-should-step-down-handover-to-middle-belt-hagher/

The winner of the Saturday’s governorship election in Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi has said that he will pay the backlog of salaries owed civil servants in the state within the first six months of his return to office. Fayemi of the All Progressives Congress beat Kolapo Olusola of the Peoples Democratic Party in a keenly contested race to succeed the incumbent Governor Ayodele Fayose. Speaking at his residence in Isan-Ekiti, the former Minister of Solid Mineral Development, said Ekiti State lost value under Fayose, while also promising to re-introduce free education in the state. He said, “Ekiti people should expect the eight-point agenda redoubled. They should expect the backlog of salaries cleared within the first six months of my coming to the office. They should expect re-introduction of free education, including payment of fees for the West Africa Examination Council, National Examination Council, National Business and Technical Examinations Board and the national entrance examination into tertiary institutions which they lost out on. “We will re-introduce social security scheme for the elderly in an enhanced manner. They should expect the return of our youth volunteer programme. Luckily, the Federal Government has started a programme similar to what we used to have in Ekiti State, called N-Power. We will add our own initiative to that programme. “The outgoing government is not interested in what happens to the young in our society beyond using them as thugs and forcing them to eat crumbs from the table of the master. They should expect a return to decency, decorum, integrity, values in Ekiti State. It is about reclaiming our land and restoring our values which we have lost in the past four years.” http://www.vondanews.com/what-ill-do-in-my-first-six-months-as-governor-fayemi/

The UN Special Coordinator on the Middle East Peace Process, Mr Nickolay Mladenov, has urged Israelis and Palestinians to pull back from the brink of war. Mladenov said this at a press conference in the Gaza Strip on Sunday amid a ceasefire holding after a day-long flare-up in fighting between Gaza and Israel Gaza militants. “Yesterday we were on the brink of war and it has taken the concerted efforts of everyone to make sure that we step back from confrontation,” Mladenov warned. The envoy also appealed to the Palestinian factions to not provoke incidents at the fence, to stop the firing of rockets and mortars, to stop the incendiary kites and to “give peace a chance. “I appeal to Israel to be very restrained in its responses to the situation in Gaza. “I appeal to snipers not to shoot children. Iappeal to everybody to step back from the brink,” he added. The envoy also noted the stalled Palestinian reconciliation process and the dire security situation in the wake of Israel’s deadly response to the recent series of Palestinian protests that began at the Gaza border fence in March. “I want to begin by expressing deepest condolences to the parents of all the children, whose lives have been lost in the past few weeks; to all journalists and to all medical professionals, who have lost their lives in the line of duty,” Mladenov said. He called for concerted efforts by all to pull back from “a confrontation that nobody wants, nobody needs and in which everyone will lose’’. “Further, the international community has the responsibility to act immediately and meet the expectations not only of providing aid to the people of Gaza but of designing a political path to move forward,” he said. He appealed to the leadership of both Hamas and Fatah and all Palestinian factions, to take Egypt’s initiatives very seriously. “The only realistic perspective today is this: avoid war, fix the humanitarian problems of Gaza and get back to the reconciliation process. If we are able to do this, we can achieve a lot. “But we need and I hope we will have the full cooperation of all Palestinians and all Israelis who are sick and tired of war and conflict, who want to live in peace, and who want to see their lives not constantly threatened by rockets or air strikes,” Mladenov added http://www.vondanews.com/isreal-palestine-on-the-brink-of-war-un/

The Coordinator, South-East Caucus, National Committee of Buhari Support Group, Sen. Hope Uzodinma, has said President Muhammadu Buhari will get 6 million votes out of estimated 8 million registered voters in the South-East in 2019. Uzodinma at the inaugural meeting of the caucus in Abuja on Thursday said a landslide victory will be achieved through promotion of Buhari’s achievements and because it was likely that his re-election would help the region to produce the President in 2023. He said: “The national leadership has approved the operation of this caucus and we are going to go for it, bearing in mind that if we succeed, we will smile very well in 2023. “We are going to tag our operation, ‘Operation 2023’, meaning that by the time Mr President wins convincingly in the South-East, the name of the business will be ‘Reciprocity’. This means, I have done for you, you are now to do for me. “Every booth in South-East belongs to some people. They have leaders and if the message is given to them in a manner that they will understand, I am sure that we will succeed. “There is no point claiming headship; the common denominator is what would make President Buhari, out of the eight million registered voters in the South-East, to get a minimum of six million votes. “In doing that, we have to make sacrifices and call some people to order. We will do our beat. “For me as a person, we will try to convince and those that will willingly follow will follow.’’ He stressed that management structures would be set up at the state, local government and ward as well as booth levels, for better delivery. “Before some of us came into the party, I was told you do not use money to do politics; now we are going to use money to do politics. “We are going to do that knowing very well that the tradition and culture of our people require that. “We cannot begin to learn a new culture when election is a few days away. So we will start from the known to the unknown. “We are going to work with the President and by the grace of God, he will win in 2019. “However, we have to establish criteria for knowing who a leader is when we get home. “A leader is a man who wins his booth. A man who doesn’t win his booth is a pensioner. So, we will identify the right type of people that will in the front line, give us victory,” he said http://www.vondanews.com/how-buhari-will-get-6-million-votes-in-south-east-senator-uzodinma/

Ahead of the Saturday’s governorship election in Ekiti State, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has warned people of the state against acts of violence. The monarch warned that if the “election is bloody” in Ekiti State, “other states will be affected too.” Ooni, who is the co-Chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria gave the advice on Wednesday at his palace in Ile-Ife while hosting the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Paul Arkwright. He urged the youths in Ekiti State to refuse to be used as agents of electoral violence and criminality, saying they too have rights to occupy the public offices of leadership such as governorship or presidency in the nearest future. According to Ooni, “What I heard happening in Ekiti state during this electioneering period does not make me happy as their father. Enough of crisis, we do not want any crisis in Yorubaland, where there is violence, progress and tranquillity will be deprived, but where there is peace, there is progress. “I specifically warn all youths in Ekiti state to maintain peaceful coexistence before, during and after the election, as brighter future awaits them if they productively discover themselves. “Youths must refuse to be used for political violence that wastes their lives because they too can become governor or President of the country in the nearest future.” http://www.vondanews.com/ekiti-elections-ooni-of-ife-speaks-on-violence-during-saturdays-poll/
