Nigerian Senator Buruji Kashamu is said to have died of Coronavirus according to multiple reports now confirmed by Senator Ben Murray Bruce. Senator Kashamu is said to have died Saturday at the First Cardiology Consultants Hospital in Lagos, Nigeria. Kashamu was a Nigerian politician who served as a Senator representing Ogun East in the 8th National Assembly. Senator Kashamu was the Vice-Chairman of the Senate Committee on States and Local Government. He then contested the Governorship of the Ogun elections during the 2019 polls along with Nigerian columnist, Mr Reuben Abati as deputy Governor. He was a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP in Ogun State. He was appointed as the chairman, Organization and Mobilization Committee of the PDP in the South West zone of Nigeria. In 2018, he was expelled from the People’s Democratic Party, a decision later voided by an Abuja High Court in October 2018. He was the 2019 Ogun State gubernatorial election candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party. In 1998, Kashamu was arrested in the United Kingdom on drugs-related charges after trying to enter the country with $230,000 in cash. He was acquitted and released in 2003. Madagascan President Andry Rajoelina has officially launched a medicine he believes can prevent and cure patients suffering from COVID-19. Developed by the Malagasy Institute of Applied Research and branded COVIDOrganics, President Rajaolina presented the so-called remedy to the press on Monday. It contains Artemisia, a plant cultivated on the Big Island to fight against malaria. “All trials and tests have been conducted and its effectiveness in reducing the elimination of symptoms has been proven for the treatment of patients with COVID-19 in Madagascar,” the president said. A presidential decree said COVID-organics is mandatory for children returning to school on Wednesday. President Rajaolina said Monday that it had cured two COVID-19 cases. “The Covid-Organics will be distributed free of charge to our most vulnerable compatriots and sold at very low prices to others. All profits will be donated to IMRAto finance scientific research,” the president wrote on Twitter.. https://www.itrendnaija.com/2020/05/covid-organics-madagascar-launches.html?m=1

An Organic Chemistry Researcher based in Nigeria, Boluwaji Adeniyi, has unveiled a herbal procedure which he claimed is potent enough to cure COVID-19 and not just treating the symptoms. Adeniyi, who is currently pursuing his Post-Doctorate Degree at Benue State University, Makurdi, expressed confidence that any person infected with COVID-19 will surely recover after taking his herbal procedure, if the prescription is strictly followed. He said there is no disease worldwide, no matter how virulent the causative organism is, that cannot be cured by plants, including that of Coronavirus. The researcher, who is a member of the Chemical Society of Nigeria, said though some powerful leaders of the world have lost hope in the fight against the pandemic due to failing ideas and technology, the solution lies in folklore medicine. He lamented that the number of deaths resulting from the COVID-19 with a geometrical increase everyday is dreadful and the Coronavirus capable of wiping out human race. “I am more than convinced that the herbs presented below is potent enough to cure (not just treating the symptoms) COVID-19 if only the prescription can be strictly followed as highlighted,” he said. Adeniyi, who is also a member of the National Association of Nigerian Traditional Medicine Practitioners, listed the ingredients/materials he advised could be used to treat COVID-19 as follows: • Bark, Leaves and Root of Neem tree( Azadirachta indica also called Dogoyaro in Yoruba) • 10 pieces fresh Tetrapleura tetraptera (also called AIDAN in Yoruba) • 10 handful of Heliotropium indicum roots (also called egbo agogo igun in Yoruba) • 10 handful of Khaya grandifoliola Bark (also called eepo Oganwo in Yoruba) • A handful of Opuntia dillenii (also called oro agogo in Yoruba) • Two handful of Bird pepper or Capsicum frutescens (also called Ata Ijosin in Yoruba) • A handful of Turmeric (also called Atale in Yoruba) More details at https://www.itrendnaija.com/2020/04/how-to-cure-coronavirus-with-herb-dr.html?m=1

Hope surges around the world as Remdesivir is proving effective against coronavirus. Optimism is welling up in United States with the promising returns from Remdesivir, an investigational antiviral drug from Gilead Sciences, which is on clinical trials. A Chicago hospital using the drug in the treatment of severe COVID-19 patients has reported rapid recoveries. About 50 different drugs are on clinical trials for the treatment of COVID-19, including that of the Nigeria team led by Maurice Iwu, a professor of pharmacology and a former chairman of the Independent National Electric Commission, INEC. But it is said that Remdesivir is the most promising for now, showing a potential to impact SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus that causes Covid-19, in lab tests. If the data are conclusive, safe and effective the Food and Drug Administration and other regulatory agencies may issue definite approvals by the end of April. It may become the first approved treatment against COVID-19. The University of Chicago Medicine recruited 125 people, 113 of which had severe disease with Covid-19 into Gilead’s two Phase 3 clinical trials. They were treated with daily infusions of remdesivir. Only two died; while 123 have been discharged, confirmed said Kathleen Mullane, the University of Chicago infectious disease specialist overseeing the remdesivir studies for the hospital, in a video discussion with other University of Chicago faculty members. Similar trials of the same drug are going on simultaneously in other institutions. “What we can say at this stage is that we look forward to data from ongoing studies becoming available,” Gilead said in a statement last Thursday. Data from the first 400 patients are expected by the end of April. However, the severe trial doesn’t include a placebo group for comparison Mullane adopts cautious optimism. “It’s always hard, but certainly when we start (the) drug, we see fever curves falling. Fever is now not a requirement for people to go on trial, we do see when patients do come in with high fevers, they do [reduce] quite quickly. We have seen people come off ventilators a day after starting therapy. So, in that realm, overall our patients have done very well. Most of our patients are severe and most of them are leaving at six days, so that tells us duration of therapy doesn’t have to be 10 days. We have very few that went out 6 to 10 days, maybe three.” This notwithstanding, the University of Chicago Medicine says “drawing any conclusions at this point is premature and scientifically unsound.” Scientists are hoping to see more data from randomized controlled studies. Put together, the Gilead trial is investigating five and 10-day treatment courses of remdesivir for a statistical comparison of patient improvement between two treatment arms. Improvement is measured using a seven-point numerical scale that encompasses death (at worst) and discharge from hospital (best outcome), with various degrees of supplemental oxygen and intubation in between. Remdesivir, an investigational antiviral drug from Gilead Sciences The Covid-19 study includes 1,600 patients in 169 different centers globally. Slawomir Michalak, a 57-year-old factory worker from a suburb west of Chicago, was one of the participants with a severe case of COVID-19. His temperature was 104 with severe shortness of breath when he was admitted on April 4. On his first dose of remdesivir he said, “My fever dropped almost immediately and I started to feel better.” The next day he could do without oxygen support. He received two more infusions of the drug and was well enough to be discharged on April 7. “Remdesivir was a miracle,” he enthused. President Donald Trump in March said remdesivir “seems to have a very good result.” The stock of Gilead rose by 16 percent at the New York Stock Exchange after the news leaked last Thursday as investors scrambled to take position ahead of the final approval. By Friday it stabilized at eight percent. Given the political and economic dimensions, there is stiff competition by the advanced countries for the discovery of cure for COVID-19. Most countries want to produce their own indigenous drug for the treatment of the disease. In United Kingdom, the University of Oxford is conducting what has been described as the largest trials of COVID-19 drug involving 5,000 patients in 169 NHS hospitals. Peter Horby, professor of emerging infectious diseases and global health at Oxford University, who is leading the trials said, “This is by far the largest trial in the world.” The Recovery team is hoping to be the first to have definitive data. “We’re guessing sometime in June we may get the results,” said Prof Horby. “If it is really clear that there are benefits, an answer will be available quicker.” However, he cautions, “There would be no magic bullet.” Nigeria is also in the race for a COVID-19 drug. However, the variables appear to be out the Country’s hand as Prof Iwu’s drug is on clinical trials in United States. Knowing the economic politics of finding the cure, every country may prioritize the products of their own researchers. Iwu has given his formulation to Nigeria and says they know what to do if the death rate becomes much. With the case pushing towards the 1, 000 milestone and 19 deaths already, it may be time for NAFDAC to approve the clinical trial of the formulation in Nigeria for national interest under the principle of “compassionate use.” https://www.itrendnaija.com/2020/04/drug-ready-for-covid-19-cure.html

countries across the world, just 15 have no reported cases of covid-19 as at Friday. Many of the countries that appear to have escaped the deadly coronavirus pandemic are small islands in the South Pacific, which are geographically hard to reach. However, some bigger countries, such as North Korea and Turkmenistan, also have no reported cases. “It’s highly unlikely that a country such as North Korea – that borders with China – has zero cases of coronavirus,” specialist in Infectious Diseases at the Australian National University, Associate Professor Sanjaya Senanayake. “Of course, we can only speculate, but it’s likely they are either not reporting the cases they have, or don’t have the means to test for the virus.” Professor Senanayake said it is possible for some of the smaller, more remote countries in the Pacific to have dodged the virus. “While their geographical isolation has protected them up until now, their weak healthcare systems and low incomes could make them extremely vulnerable if they are affected. They need to keep testing to ensure they stay safe,” he said. North Koreans wear masks amid the global spread of the new coronavirus. North Korea claims no coronavirus cases. The already isolated state closed its border with China in January, and refused entry to all foreign visitors. However, many are skeptical of the country’s claim, due to their high levels of state secrecy, weak healthcare system and lack of capacity for testing. Tajikistan residents at a Russian airport waiting to get a plane home. Turkmenistan and Tajikistan still holding huge events These central Asian countries claim to have had no coronavirus cases despite not practising strict social distancing. Turkmenistan held a mass cycling rally during the first week of April, and Tajikistan’s national soccer league is still playing. Turkmenistan’s health statistics are notoriously unreliable; for the past 10 years they have claimed to have nobody living with HIV/Aids. However, they did close nearly all of their land border crossings in early March, cancelled flights to China at the beginning of February and diverted all international flights from the capital to the city of Turkmenabat in the north-east, where they created a quarantine zone. In Tajikistan, there have been several mysterious deaths that the government claims were caused by pneumonia. With a population of 600,000, the Solomon Islands are the largest of the Oceanic states not to have a confirmed coronavirus case. The Solomon Islands send tests to Australia With a population of 600,000, the Solomon Islands are the largest of the Oceanic states not to have a confirmed coronavirus case. Their government has been proactive in putting preventative measures in place. A state of public emergency was declared on March 25, and they have been sending samples to Australia for testing, with all so far coming back negative. As of April 16, there are two more people awaiting test results and four people in quarantine. Lagos disclosed that about 10 percent of the 172 Nigerians who returned from Ivory Coast last week tested positive to Coronavirus. "On Wednesday, we took 67 Nigerians coming from Ivory Coast into our quarantine facility in Badagry where we’re keeping them for 14 days”, NAN quoted him as saying. “We’ll test them. If they’re positive, we’ll move them into one of our isolation wards in Lagos and if they’re negative, we’ll allow them to continue on their way to Osun State which is where they originated from. “We are also watching movements closely so as not to increase the number of imported cases in the state.” On management of COVID-19 corpses, Abayomi said that officials from the Ministries of Health and Environment had been trained to specially prepare such bodies before handing them over to their families for burial. The Commissioner warned that only sealed masks, which cover the entire face and filter air breathing, could protect one from contracting coronavirus. Just like a hen, an eagle too sits on its eggs waiting for them to hatch. Some hatch a little faster than others. After a while those that do not hatch, the eagle sits on them a little longer. At some point, as it has to provide for the ones that hatched with food; it flies away, comes back, feeds the young ones and still sit on the eggs to see if there will be any difference. When it sees that there is still no change after all the efforts it has made, it gives up and moves on with the rest of the eaglets letting go of what could not become. The hardest thing in our lives is to figure out when to give up; giving up on that business, on that relationship, on that venture. At times we are conflicted with the ‘maybe’, maybe if I put more effort in it…, maybe if I invest more in it…, maybe if I put more time in it… It has to reach a point where you draw a line, and say you have nothing more to give and move on to the next thing. The eagle had figured out that there was nothing wrong with her. She had witnesses, the hatched eaglets that proved it. It wasn’t that her heat wasn’t enough. Even with the extended time, still nothing happened! https://www.itrendnaija.com/2019/09/its-over-when-and-how-to-say-enough-is-enough.html?m=1
