‘Bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.’ Colossians 1:10

To bear fruit, you must dedicate yourself to the process. Whether it’s in your career, your marriage, your ministry, or your walk with God, once you dedicate yourself to ‘increase in the knowledge of God’ and a lifestyle of planned improvement, it becomes normal to you. And you realise when you’re not making progress that something is missing. It’s been reputed that the Polish American classical pianist Arthur Rubinstein refused to listen to recordings of his playing. Even only a few months afterwards, he was unhappy with what he heard. Why? Because he had changed and improved—but his recordings had not.

Stop and think about the non-negotiables in your life. What are you willing to live and die for? Write down what you want to hold on to at any cost and fully explain why. After you have done that, everything else should be open to change. Here is how Paul prayed for the Christians in the Colossian church: ‘For this reason we also, since the day we heard about it, have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all perseverance and patience; joyously giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in light’ (Colossians 1:9-12 NASB20).

‘Search me, O God, and know my heart.’ Psalm 139:23

Change must happen inside you before it can happen around you. In an old Peanuts comic strip, Lucy tells Charlie Brown she would like to change the world. So, Charlie asks her, ‘Where would you start?’ In typical Lucy fashion, she replies, ‘I would start with you.’ Think about it: when we have marital problems, we sometimes pray, ‘Lord, help my spouse to change!’ But maybe things will improve when you’re willing to pray, ‘Lord, help me to change!’ Changing the atmosphere and dynamics in your home usually starts with changing your own actions and reactions. The Bible says, ‘… Be tender-hearted, and keep a humble attitude. … Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and He will bless you for it’ (1 Peter 3:8-9 NLT). When we don’t like something, we want everybody—except us—to change! The truth is, we’re resistant to change.

In The Secret Garden, novelist Frances Hodgson Burnett puts it like this: ‘At first people refuse to believe that a strange new thing can be done, and then they begin to hope it can be done, then they see it can be done—then it is done and all the world wonders why it was not done centuries ago.’ To change your world, you must first change yourself. The psalmist prayed, ‘Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting’ (Psalm 139:23-24 NKJV). As you begin to change for the better, others will notice and react to you accordingly. So, make this your prayer today: ‘Lord, let the change I seek begin in me!’

‘I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord,’ Philippians 3:8

You must be willing to pay the price for change. American dramatist and screenwriter Sidney Howard remarked, ‘One-half of knowing what you want is knowing what you must give up before you get it.’ Change always costs you, if not in money, then in time, creativity, and energy. In fact, if it doesn’t cost you anything, chances are it’s not real change! As you consider how to make the changes needed in your life in order to improve and grow, it’s important to count the cost of changing compared to the cost of remaining the same. That means you must do your homework. Change brings growth. But it can also bring grief, especially when it means letting some things go in order to embrace others. What will the changes you desire really cost?

Paul wrote: ‘More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them mere rubbish, so that I may gain Christ, and may be found in Him, … that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; if somehow I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already grasped it all or have already become perfect, but I press on if I may also take hold of that for which I was even taken hold of by Christ Jesus.’ (Philippians 3:8-12 NASB20). The question is: how badly do you want to change—and are you willing to pay the price?

‘Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all.’ 1 Timothy 4:15

Recognise that without change, there can be no progress. Now, we’re not advocating change for its own sake. That can be a characteristic of restlessness and a symptom of inner conflict. Change can represent great opportunities as well as potential losses. Although all progress produces change, not all change produces progress. But as American leadership expert Max DePree observed, ‘We cannot become what we need to be by remaining what we are.’ If you want to grow, you must be willing to change. American General Douglas MacArthur, hero of the Pacific War, said, ‘Life is a lively process of becoming. If you haven’t added to your interests within the past year, if you are thinking the same old thoughts, relating the same personal experiences, having the same predictable reactions, rigor mortis of the personality has set in.’ Did you get that last sentence? Rigor mortis is the physical rigidity that sets in after death. And it can happen to you relationally, career-wise, and spiritually.

In 1 Timothy 4, Paul is mentoring his spiritual son Timothy to take over leadership in the church when Paul is no longer around. And he was letting Timothy know he couldn’t inherit the mantle of leadership simply because Paul loved him; rather, he would have to work for it. And that meant working on himself! ‘Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all.’ Opportunities in life come to all of us, but they’re only recognised and grasped by those who are prepared. And that means being willing to grow, adapt, and change.

Don’t lose your passion for God

Wed, 16 Jul 2025

‘His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for your house will consume me."’ John 2:17

Try to imagine the fire in the eyes of Jesus and the flex of His muscles as He turns over the tables of the money changers in the temple. And He does it while wielding a whip He made Himself. The Bible says, ‘His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for your house will consume me." (John 2:17 ESV). Jesus was the wisest and kindest person who ever lived. Additionally, He was the most passionate. And those who follow Him ought to be the most passionate people on earth. The word enthusiasm comes from two Greek words: en and theos, meaning ‘in God’. And the more you get into God, the more passion you develop about the things of God. ‘Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart’ (Psalm 37:4 NKJV).

Yes, you’re supposed to crucify your carnal desires daily. But God doesn’t do away with your capacity for desire; He sanctifies and redirects it. When you ‘delight yourself also in the Lord’, you get a ‘desire transplant’. C.S. Lewis said, ‘We are half-hearted creatures fooling around with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us.’ A pastor adds: ‘Sin is a waste of energy … And it’s a double waste. After you waste your energy on things like lust and pride and anger, then you must waste even more energy on things like guilt and shame and regret. Nothing is more de-energising than sin, but by the same token, nothing is more re-energising than obedience. It’s pure energy.’

Free from jealousy

Tue, 15 Jul 2025

‘But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.’ James 3:14

The Bible says, ‘… For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved’ (2 Peter 2:19 ESV). And that’s especially true of jealousy. American pastor Chuck Swindoll writes: ‘Jealousy and envy are often used interchangeably, but there’s a difference. Envy begins with empty hands; it mourns what it doesn’t have … Jealousy begins with full hands; it’s threatened by the pain of losing what you have to someone else despite your efforts to hold on to it … This was Cain’s sin. He was jealous of Abel. He resented God’s acceptance of his brother, and not until Abel’s blood poured over Cain’s cruel hands did jealousy subside. Solomon might well have written the epitaph for Abel’s tombstone: “Jealousy is cruel as the grave. Its flashes are flashes of fire” (Song of Solomon 8:6 ESV).

Anyone who has experienced deliverance from this hellish giant knows too well how jealousy can decimate a friendship, dissolve a romance, destroy a marriage, shoot tension through the ranks of professionals, nullify unity on a team, ruin a church, separate preachers, foster competition among the choir, bring bitterness and finger-pointing among talented instrumentalists and capable singers. Jealousy questions motives and deplores another’s success.’ The Bible says, ‘‘But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.’ (James 3:14 NKJV). Instead, determine that by the grace of God, you’re going to break free from its control. Swindoll adds: ‘I lived many years obeying its commands. It was gross agony. Finally, I realised I didn’t have to live in darkness. I slew the giant and crawled out … and the releasing sunlight of freedom captured my heart. The air was so fresh and clean. Oh, the difference it has made! It’s utter delight. Ask my wife.’

Have a biblical perspective

Mon, 14 Jul 2025

‘So that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures … we might have hope.’ Romans 15:4

There is a cute story about a young woman who left home and to attend university. After her first term, she emailed her mother, saying, ‘I think it’s time I brought you up to date on what’s going on in my life. Shortly after I arrived at university, I got bored with dormitory life and stole fifty dollars from my roommate’s purse. With the money, I rented a motorbike, which I crashed into a telephone pole a few streets from the dorm. I broke my leg in the accident and am unable to attend lectures, so I’m coming home to live with you and dad.’

After sending the email, she followed up shortly after with a second email: ‘Mum, I was only joking. I didn’t steal any money, or rent a motorbike, or hit a telephone pole, or break my leg. And I won’t be coming home to live with you and dad either. However, I am getting a D in mathematics and an F in literature, and I wanted you to keep my grades in proper perspective!’ Seriously, having a biblical perspective on life’s challenges can lift you out of discouragement and despair. Paul said, ‘For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.’ (Romans 15:4 NIV). For every problem you face in life, God’s Word has a principle to be practised or a promise to be claimed. So, the way to overcome discouragement is to get into God’s Word and get it into you.

Faith is not faith until it is acted upon

Sun, 13 Jul 2025

‘For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.’ James 2:26

Could it be that the negative perception people have of the church stems from the negative energy we project? And could it be that our negative energy stems from our negative view of righteousness? We falsely view righteousness as doing nothing wrong: ‘Don’t do this. Don’t do that—and you’re okay.’ The problem with that approach is you can do nothing wrong and still not do the right thing; the thing God is calling you to do.

Righteousness means more than doing nothing wrong. Do you really think God’s ultimate dream for us is doing nothing wrong? You love it when your children make a difficult decision not to do something wrong. But the thing that brings you greater joy is seeing them develop their gifts and maximise their potential. And that’s what God wants for each of us. The Bible teaches two kinds of sin: the sin of commission, which is doing something you shouldn’t have done, and the sin of omission, which is all the things we could and should have done to advance God’s Kingdom but didn’t do. A pastor writes: ‘In God’s economy, breaking even is a total loss. Isn’t that the lesson of the parable of the talents? The servant with one talent broke even … and Jesus called him a ‘wicked and lazy servant’ (Matthew 25:26 NKJV). The greatest risk is taking no risks … Righteousness is using all our God-given gifts to their full God-given potential. Love doesn’t play it safe; it takes risks. Love doesn’t make excuses; it takes responsibility. Love doesn’t see problems; it seizes opportunities to step up and step in.’

Knowing the season you’re in

Sat, 12 Jul 2025

‘To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.’ Ecclesiastes 3:1

Your life’s purpose is connected to a specific time and season. In other words, it will have a beginning and an ending. Some of God’s purposes can be fulfilled in a short time, while others take a lifetime. You won’t always be able to do what you’re doing today, or at least to the extent you’re doing it now. The Bible teaches, ‘… As your days, so shall your strength be’ (Deuteronomy 33:25 NKJV). That’s why some of the world’s best sports players transition into coaching. Three important observations:

1) You must understand and maximise the season you’re in right now. 2) When one season ends, you must transition graciously into the next. 3) You must learn to enjoy whatever season you’re in. Here is an interesting phenomenon: Elijah passed his mantle of power to Elisha, but nowhere do we read that Elisha passed it on to anyone else. But when Paul passed his mantle on to Timothy, it didn’t end there. Paul told him, ‘And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also’ (2 Timothy 2:2 NKJV). Instead of lamenting that he had run out of time, Paul rejoiced in knowing that God had helped him to fulfil his assignment. ‘I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, …’ (2 Timothy 4:7-8 NKJV). The truth is, God only gives you grace for the season you’re in. And when a season ends, and it’s time to transition, His grace will lead you to His next place, or next season, elsewhere. So, pay attention to when it’s time to move on!

*** Thank God for the gift of life in Jesus name 🙏.

Why can’t we work together? (1)

Fri, 4 Jul 2025

‘Diotrephes, who loves to have the pre-eminence among them, does not receive us.’ 3 John 1:9

Reason one: insecurity. The Florentine philosopher Machiavelli said, ‘The first method for estimating the intelligence of a ruler is to look at the men he has around him.’ Insecure leaders are threatened by talented individuals, so they surround themselves with weak people. As a result, the work suffers, and everybody involved suffers too. When a leader responds to a genuine question by saying, ‘How dare you challenge my authority,’ they’re dangerous and often not worth following. Insecure leaders usually fail for two reasons: they want to maintain control over everything, or they’re afraid of being replaced by someone more competent. Either way, leaders who don’t encourage teamwork weaken their own potential and discourage those around them.

US President Woodrow Wilson said, ‘We should not only use all the brains we have, but all that we can borrow.’ John the Apostle tells us that Diotrephes, a leader in the church, ‘loves to have the pre-eminence’. What was this man’s problem? He wanted to blow everybody else’s light out in order to let his own light shine. So, John writes: ‘This is why, if I come, I will remind him of the works he is doing, slandering us with malicious words. And he is not satisfied with that! He not only refuses to welcome fellow believers, but he even stops those who want to do so and expels them from the church. Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God’ (3 John 1:10-11 CSB). Let God’s approval—which you already have—make you secure!

Knowing when not to speak

Thu, 3 Jul 2025

‘The wise don’t make a show of their knowledge, but fools broadcast their foolishness.’ Proverbs 12:23

Someone else’s need to know shouldn’t determine your need to speak. When a friend of Jesus wanted to stop His arrest, Jesus said, ‘Do you think I cannot call on My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?’ (Matthew 26:53 NIV). When Jesus stood in Pilate’s judgement hall, Pilate didn’t have the power; Jesus did! Yet, the Bible says that Jesus ‘… was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open His mouth; …’ (Isaiah 53:7 NIV). He just stood there and said nothing. Why? Because He was not on trial, Pilate was. Jesus knew His destiny, and, more importantly, He knew His heavenly Father intimately. And when you know God, you can face anything with confidence—and feel free to say nothing.

Sometimes the wisest thing is to say, ‘I don’t have the answer right now. But I will think about it, pray, and get back to you.’ ‘The wise don’t make a show of their knowledge, but fools broadcast their foolishness’ (Proverbs 12:23 NLT). When people are anxious for answers, they will try to pressure you into speaking before you have all the facts or have had a chance to pray and consider the situation carefully. If you ask God, He will tell you what to say and when to say it. His promise is, ‘I have put My words in your mouth and covered you with the shadow of My hand ...’ (Isaiah 51:16 NIV). Pride says, ‘Don’t just stand there; say something!’ Wisdom says, ‘Don’t just say something; stand there!’ Quietly ask God for insight. One thought from God can solve the problem in a hurry.

Christianity Etc › To Love, You Must Forgive by Btruth(op): 4:52am On Jul 02, 2025
To love, you must forgive

Wed, 2 Jul 2025

‘Forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone.’ Colossians 3:13

It’s impossible to love anyone fully and at the same time resent someone else. You cannot give total love when your heart is divided. And a bitter heart is a divided heart. You may be thinking, ‘My spouse is a wonderful person, but I just can’t love him.’ Look beneath the surface. You may still be reacting to your past and harbouring resentment against someone who hurt you. That’s keeping you from loving your spouse. And it’s not fair to them. Many people have justified cause for their anger.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) states that one out of every four women and one out of every fourteen men experience abuse during their lifetime. But you must let go of the past to get on with the present. To begin loving people, you must close the door on the past. And that cannot happen without forgiveness! So, forgive those who have hurt you—for your own sake, not because they deserve it. Do it so your heart can be whole again. The people from your past cannot hurt you unless you allow them to hurt you by holding resentment against them. Anytime you resent someone, you give them a piece of your heart, a piece of your attention, a piece of your mind. Do you want that person to have that? No? Then take it back by forgiving. Instead of rehearsing the hurt over and over, release it. And you can’t be selective in what you forgive: ‘I will forgive that, but I won’t forgive this.’ The Bible says, ‘Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you’ (Colossians 3:13 NIV).
