A doctor explains why period cramps can hurt way more than a heart attack

Two years ago, Quartz published a story in which a professor said period cramps can be "almost as bad as having a heart attack."
Last week, the story resurfaced, going viral on social media.
But gynecologist Jen Gunter, who blogs about women's health, wrote that the comparison between heart attacks and period cramps doesn't really work.
That's because heart attacks are often just mildly painful - and in many cases, they're not painful at all.
It would be more accurate, she wrote, to compare cramps to being in labor.

Back in 2016, Quartz published an article on the monthly misery faced by women all over the globe: period cramps. The story acknowledged that menstrual pain can be serious and even debilitating - and yet, there's been disappointingly little research on how we can treat it.

But the story had a resurgence on social media last week after Elle UK zeroed in on a single quote from the piece. Reproductive health professor John Guillebaud told Quartz that patients have described cramp pain as "almost as bad as having a heart attack."

That quote sparked immediate interest. Other news outlets including Marie Claire picked up the story, and it spread like wildfire on Twitter. To many women, the comparison wasn't so much surprising as it was glaringly obvious.

But gynecologist Dr. Jen Gunter, who writes a popular women's health blog, has called that comparison into question. In a new post published Friday, Gunter wrote that period cramps are often much more painful than heart attacks.

If you are waiting for terrible, excruciating chest pain to tell you that you are having a heart attack, well, you are going to miss the heart attack," Gunter wrote. "Heart attacks often produce vague symptoms or mild pain, that is why many people ignore them ... In addition, more than 40% of women have no pain with heart attacks. It would be dangerous for women to think that a heart attack should be at least as bad as their menstrual cramps."

Besides pain, heart attack symptoms can also include shortness of breath, a lightheaded feeling, nausea, vomiting, and unexplained tiredness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).


But primary dysmenorrhea - the scientific term for painful periods - always hurts.

Period pain happens mostly because of substances called prostaglandins, Gunter explained in the post. They're released from the lining of the uterus and make it contract. And during these period contractions, pressure on the uterus can be just as high as it is during the "pushing" stage of labor, she added.

"So if you need an analogy to describe period pain," Gunter wrote, "use labor or cutting your finger off without an anesthetic."

@Bubblefairy you could imagine my joy when WAIKIKI was extended, this was a drama that didn't get great promotion at all...the success of this drama was unexpected and that is when you know your incredible work speaks for you. I love all the entire cast even baby SOL's acting is amazing hahahha. I enjoyed the two episodes dedicated to bloopers and their favorite scenes they were still hilarious.

Imagine a hairy man getting his ENTIRE.....I MEAN ENTIRE BODY WAXED for a drama inside a drama that he didn't even get to participate in, that is dedication right there.

Congratulations Raphaella on the initiation, I know it must have been a struggle.

Song for the day has been the entire appearance of Hwang chiyeol on I am a singer 4. This is another artist who's voice I want to marry(they are many by the way), his presence on stage is just amazing.

My dear, Waikik is the only drama I'm watching right now. No single hype rara but turns out to be a hit.

Seriously, Jun ki is giving me intense oppa goals, like who will not fall in love with the oppa that will go to any lengths just to see you smile even it means embarrassing and humiliating himself immensely.

Sorry Seo jin ah, you don't have a choice as your heart has gone with Jun ki oppa, that oppa that was the first to remove his clothes and dance on the street semi naked just to see you happy.

hello people, it has been a bit quiet here, it seems like drama world has been compromised hahahha. anyway i am just glad that they have extended waikiki episodes. if anyone is still following cross please give me an update from when he joined the hospital as one of their residents.

I'm also glad its been extended, but I'm sad no Waikiki this week.
To talk true sef, I'm in a drama slump lately. No drama just interests me, watched The great seducer 1-4 by force, although it had a fantastic story, the characters are fully developed and great picture, I still couldn't be enthusiastic about it (hope I'm not mildly depressed sha) and my mind is telling me that someone will die in that drama, there are just so many damaged and partially damaged individuals in that drama.

Anyway, if anyone has a good drama to pull me out of this whatever-induced slump of mine, I would gladly try it.

I am still watching ooo, I don't even know where to start, I feel like Jun Ki can have a story of his own honestly. I haven't found fault with any of his scenes, they are hilarious to a fault.

That wedding lie got so big really fast and she looked so beautiful in that gown. I love how in love Dong Gu is with yoon ah and I am also loving how karma is dealing with soo ah.

I am so proud of Dong Gu, he has been getting a lot of recognition for his acting and he is really doing amazing.

This is probably one of my favorite comedy drama so far even the supporting cast are great as well. Imagine when Jun Ki thought that Du shik was talking about him when he was talking about his first love or was it when they were all at the police station hahahhahahaha..

Although that wedding was a lie, I loved how they had a sweet and lovely wedding. A celebrity came to sing sef hahahahahahahahahah

Have you noticed how Jun Ki is in everyone's business. I can't get that scene where he was trying to build up is torso for his movie outta my head. Poor thing is so earnest and hardworking I hope he catches a break soon.

I like the way they insert the baby's giggles and looks in their conversations and yes that baby is already a star I can get lost in the cuteness of those big eyes. I really hope they don't ruin it too, it is somehow so refreshing....the way they react when she needs to breastfeed is a matter for the gods. I know I will definately definitely see it to the end.

I was just able to watch the last four episodes and meeeeeeehhhhnnnnnn, just thinking about the scenes is earning me stares just by the way I'm laughing out loud.

Somebody should help me find something to do with Dong-gu, his expressions are khiling me. I still can't believe he is the other evil mighty child Mo ri from Rebel: thief who stole the people. Poor boy is so in love with Yoon na, he doesn't know what to do with himself.

And that yeye Jun ki, he is like the Ajinomoto in their lives, makes the soup sweeter but bad for your health, his eagerness to help everyone is creating different ridiculousness that I am positive that if he takes a vacation for few months, the rest won't get into trouble that much. I can't wait for him and Seo jin to start their romance.

Before then sha, I will like to give a special bow to Soo ah's mumuism!! that girl mumu no be here. she even shouted 'go'. SMH.

I thought at first that Doo sik looked familiar until I remembered that he was in Healer as the younger version of Kim Moon sik.

I don't know why but I derive so much pleasure in rewatching seo Jim's dressed as a better scenes.

Eulachacha Waikiki

Couldn't sleep cos of nasty dysmenorrhea, by 3am, I couldn't take it anymore so screw it, I downloaded the first two episodes.

Suffice to say, I nearly woke the whole neighborhood, I really didn't even realize when the pains disappeared.

I love watching over the top comedies but I love comedies that I can relate to in real life. And this Waikiki is so relatable.
Dong gu's facial expressions is my favorite, and the combination of the four of them is soooooo hilarious.

And that baby is very cute if I may add.
I just hope someone will not go and invest hours of ones life on the drama only to get to the middle and the thing will become draggy, or writer will go and bring one yeye angst and melodrama that will make me confused if Im watching a wrong drama with same title.

Imagine oh!!! Just Imagine, with one Celebrity Pig, Dog Secretary, Prince Octopus, CEO Bull, Househusband President, Great Sage Monkey and one Ghost-seeing demon-magnet Sam Jang in one house, NOBODY,,,,,, I REPEAT, NO....FRIGGING....BODY could have helped Bu Ja look for her family, or find out who she is.

I'm so angry at this yeye set of selfish demonic ignoramus. I can understand the demons being consumed by their own selfish agendas (nonsense animals). but that Sam Jang cannot even say OK oh Bu Ja, lemme help you find your family!!!! but no oh no, Son Oh Gong haf enter her head, she cannor think rationally again.

They all left that poor, adorable beautiful girl alone to go and die not once or twice but four frigging times for Pete's sake. I don't even know how to show my mum this episode 12 sef, she might use my phone for badminton practice because Bu Ja is her favorite character.

As for money flower I followed it up episode 8 but stopped after seeing jang hyuk sacrifice his love for revenge and the 5 years time skip really made me cringe

Funny enough, I really loved the fact that Hang hyuk sacrificed his love, I mean, he has been planing and plotting his revenge for years, he has nurtured his hatred all these years so that the only thing he sees and feels is that.

Love and hatred are quite similar, they are both intense and passionate emotions, the exact intensity people love is also how people hate.

I would have found it weird if he had dropped his revenge plans and went after love. That relationship would have been toxic.

The time skip was somehow also, but im looking on the bright side, at least, Mo Hyun had 5 more years out of her life to be happy before it was turned upside down.

It's like the writer(s) were high on original soju and suddenly had inspiration to write the drama up to episode 10, after the soju cleared from their eyes, the inspiration flew out of the window.

I don't know if its only me ohh, but I loved the drama at first, now I cannot even bring myself to download another episode. The are just doing smesme.
Its like rather than the viewers, the writers are the ones waiting for something to happen.

I think my best drama of 2017/2018 is Money Flower. Dayum!!! That drama is hot.
Hang Hyuk is absolutely hot and evillll. His revenge is outright brutal.

Every episode has some new stunning reveal.
Everyone is plotting to stab someone at the back (I love it)

Now I know some of you will think I'm a sadist, I'm not ohhhh, I just love dramas with a lot of plotting and counter plotting.

If you want to raise your blood pressure, I recommend you watch this drama.

Yes ohhh, it has finally ended, I usually don't like fluffy light saccharine sweet dramas, I watched this cos of YSH and CSB and I didn't regret it.

It was fun all through. I loved the way the relationships progressed, I loved how Kim Min Kyu started with no family and love but ended with so many people on his side.
Up to the final episode, I was grinning from ear to ear. Finale was beautiful like the cast and picture.

For the conversion process, I use Uc browser or chrome, I was not successful with opera mini.
1. open two tabs on your uc browser/chrome.
2. open https://convert-video-online.com on one tab, then the site you want to download from on the other tab.
3. Immediately you choose a drama to download, click on download.
4. Navigate to your downloads page, and pause the ongoing download.
5. Long press, then click on details, then copy the download URL.
6. Now, swipe to the other tab where you have your convert video online.
7. click on URL, then paste the download URL inside the box.
8. Click on open. Then, you should see the URL disappear and a blueness (I don't know the English to use) should fill up the box.
9. After filling, the blueness will disappear and the pasted URL will be there.
10. then, click on Resolution I choose 240p (kangminhyuksho chose 360p)
11. Click on settings, then you will see a horizontal line line which you will use to choose the mb of you choice (I choose from 45-80mb depends)
12. Then click on Convert.
13. Everything must disappear and at this stage, you must see just a long box, with 'converting to mp4' written inside, when its completely filled up with blueness, then 'download' button will appear.
Click on download and viola, you have your drama.

PS this is actually simpler than it sounds/looks.

So, I had some time on my hands and decided to choose a drama at random and watch, a drama so random that I haven't read anything about anywhere and I ended up with Black Knight, the fact that I love Shin Se-kyung probably had a hand in it.

All I can say is that if you are still on the fence about the drama, my dear, land softly, this is a drama to behold. The story is dark, oh so beautifully dark, and eerie and spectral.

Beautiful story, fantastic picture, actors and actress you can actually root for.
Everyone has an advantage in black knight,
Second lead is not one dimensional (thank God), she is soooo wrongly right at times I pity and hate her, not to mention that she is a 200 something year old petulant woman-child.
Male lead is so swoony I had to use parker to park my swooned sef off the couch.

The settings is gorgeously Victorian, like you are watching a 2034 drama in 1960.
Words fail in describing The costumes.

Stakes are high, story is tight you don't know what to expect, I'm not surprised by the high ratings its worth watching.
