The promising career of an 18-year-old fashion model came to a sudden, violent end on a highway late at night.

Kendra Durnan, 18, was killed after she hit an elk with her car, and then she, in turn, was hit by multiple passing vehicles when she stepped out of her car to inspect the damage.

The girl was driving a Chevy Trailblazer SUV with a 21-year-old man around 1 a.m. on Monday, when she struck an elk that was crossing the eight-lane Interstate 25 Highway, reports say.

After hitting the elk, Kendra pulled over and exited the vehicle to examine the situation. As she was standing by the roadway, she was hit by another SUV that had swerved to avoid the animal.

The teenager’s body was thrown over a barrier and into the opposite lanes of traffic, where it was run over by oncoming vehicles. She was killed at the scene by the force of multiple collisions, local news says.

18-year-old Kendra Durnan was a fashion model with Privileged Model Management, and recently graduated from Premiere Modeling School in Minneapolis.

The blonde-haired teenager, who had been modeling since age 14, recently moved across the country to pursue a new opportunity in Colorado Springs, according to her social media posts.

CBS News reports that after striking the elk, Kendra Durnan parked her damaged Chevy Trailblazer near the center lane divider of the highway.

The up-and-coming model stepped out onto the darkened highway, despite the dangers created by the poor nighttime visibility and the elk’s body lying in the roadway.

This decision would cost the teenager her life.

An oncoming Toyota 4Runner, driven by a 70-year-old man, careened into the area as he apparently swerved to avoid the animal that was lying in the road.

The 2-ton SUV slammed into the 18-year-old girl with such force that she was thrown over the concrete barrier dividing the opposing lanes of traffic.

Kendra’s body landed in the northbound lanes of the highway, in the path of oncoming traffic.

The teen beauty pageant winner, already suffering severe injuries, was tragically crushed by oncoming vehicles, according to a fundraising page created by family members.

A Chevy Silverado SUV, a Freightliner long-haul truck and several other vehicles all were unable to avoid running over the body of the teenager.

Kendra Durnan was declared dead at the scene. It was unclear if the young blonde was killed by the first collision with the Toyota 4Runner, or if she died under the wheels of another vehicle.

At least nine other people were taken to the hospital from the multi-car pileup, but the unfortunate model was the only reported death.

Helicopter footage from the next morning showed workers clearing wrecked vehicles from the southbound lanes. Pools of blood remained in the opposite lanes where the poor girl was struck and dragged down the roadway.

According to the state transportation department, the ten-mile stretch of highway where the crash occurred has among the highest number of roadkill reports for the area.

State patrol closed the highway while they investigated the scene of the fatal crash.

If she wasn’t using her phone and concentrated on where she was going she would have been alive.

It's hard to know. Maybe the car was going so fast that she could not have avoided it even if she had noticed it.
