Health / Re: About Bird Flu and How to Protect Nigeria by burteeone(m): 11:29am On Mar 08, 2006
The two children suspected to have contacted the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus in the northern Nigerian state of Kaduna have been confirmed healthy and free from the virus, the official News Agency of Nigeria reported on Tuesday.

Abdulhamid Abubakar, chairman of the Kaduna state committee on bird flu, was quoted as saying that the children were made to undergo necessary test following a complaint by their parents, who suspected that they might have been infected with the virus after contact with some birds about a month ago.

"The children who were treated for fever and cough, had since recovered," Abubakar said, adding that the local fowls in the family compound were destroyed in line with the government's directive.

He said the affected children had been placed on close monitoring for any developments. The Kaduna state is the site of Africa's first bird flu cases, which were confirmed last week.

Abubakar said members of his committee had already visited the home of the affected persons.

Politics / Five Killed As Police, Hausa Clash In Ibadan by burteeone(m): 8:18pm On Mar 07, 2006
Two policemen and one civilian were killed on Monday in a clash between policemen and members of the Hausa community in Ojoo, Ibadan. Several others were injured.

Police confirmed that three persons died but other sources insisted that the dead are five.

Eyewitness said trouble broke out around 11 p.m. on Sunday night when a policeman attempted to arrest a Hausa man for smoking Indian hemp at Sabo trailer park in Ojoo.

The man resisted arrest and called the attention of his colleagues who gathered to rescue him from the police men.

Sensing danger, the officers opened fire, killing the man. The crowd descended on the policemen and killed two of them.

Five persons were said to have been killed in all and several injured in a free for all fight that ensued.

Police Commissioner, Jonathan Johnson, said he has not been briefed on the matter, and the Divisional Police Officer in Ojoo, Femi Adeboye, declined comment.

"I have already briefed the headquarters on the matter and if they want me to address the press on it they should send a written letter to that effect - not even a phone call; I won't accept that. It has to be documented", Adeboye said.

But Police Public Relations Officer, Femi Adedeji, in a telephone interview described the incident as unfortunate.

He said the police have commenced investigation but have not made any arrest.

According to him, the police are not happy at the loss of officers while carrying out their legitimate duties.

Adedeji added: "Some people are already helping us in the investigation to unravel the mystery surrounding the incident".

Another eyewitness at the Ojoo Lagos motor park, Safiu Adeyi, recounted that he and his colleagues had left the garage when the incident happened but that they heard the gun shots and came back in the morning only to find the bodies.

His words: "We were told that it was a clash between police and some Hausa men. No one can really say what happened but some said the number of people that died was nothing less than five".

Armed policemen are still keeping vigil at the Ojoo trailer park to forestall any further outbreak of violence.

Efforts to get the Hausa community head in Sabo, Ojoo to comment were unsuccessful. He was said to be out of town.
Politics / Blood Will Flow March 10, Threaten Militants by burteeone(m): 7:20pm On Mar 07, 2006
Niger Delta militants on Monday threatened to spill blood and unleash greater carnage on oil firms’ facilities and federal interests if by Friday, the Federal Government fails to meet their conditions.

Warning the authorities not to test their will, the militants said they would carry out “Operation Black Mamba Strike” at the expiration of the latest deadline, which would include attacking oil facilities and perhaps taking more hostages.

An earlier ultimatum issued to the government expired Monday.

According to the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), government would be mistaken if it construed its magnanimity in releasing six of the nine oil workers it snatched on February 18, as a sign of weakness and cowardice.

The group, in a statement sent to media houses, restated its demands, including a fresh one calling on government to revisit the contentious demand of delegates from the zone to the National Political Reforms Conference. The delegates had requested the endorsement of 25 per cent derivation fund allocation for states in the region. This is to appreciate at a 20 per cent rate for five consecutive years culminating in 50 per cent resource allocation.

The confab ended without any agreement on the hotly debated issue. Indeed, the South-South delegates staged a walk-out following opposition by their northern counterparts.

The organisation’s demands include: The release of the leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF), Asari Dokubo, the former Governor of Bayelsa State, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha and Joshua Mceriah, an Ijaw activist reportedly jailed in Kaduna recently.

Others are: $1.5 billion compensation ordered by a court to be paid by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) for oil exploration in the area, as well as resource control.

The militants said the “Black Mamba Strike” has been deferred till March 10 “to minimise casualties and to offer ample room for government to crystallise her commitments to our demands.”

They expressed loss of confidence in President Olusegun Obasanjo’s commitment to resolving the crisis, describing him as “a third term freak” who is pre-occupied with extending his tenure and uses divide and rule tactics.

The militants said the Federal Government must be held responsible for “forcing our hands to arms in the open ridicule of our mothers, fathers, cousins and nephews yet unborn.”

MEND empowered a non-governmental organisation, Union and Integration of the Niger Delta Child for Youth Development (UNIFYD) to represent it and pursue, alongside existing channels of negotiation, the interpretation of the context of its demands with foreign organisations and countries such as the United Nations, United States and Britain.

“We had lost faith in the presidential will of Obasanjo to negotiate the release of the hostages. We are pepping our arsenal for Operation Black Mamba! The 10th of March is around the corner. The blood of MEND shall wash the Niger Delta of every atrocity perpetrated against her by the Nigerian state and her foreign collaborators and whatever consequence befalls our rebellion. The bones of Major Isaac Adaka Boro shall comfort our martyrdom… The revolution of MEND shall stand for the emancipation of the Niger Deltan child,” the group said. angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry

Politics / Re: President Obasanjo Is Ready To Die For Nigeria by burteeone(m): 9:32am On Mar 07, 2006
Chairman of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) and Second Republic Governor of Kaduna State, Alhaji Abdulkadir Balarabe Musa, has lent his voice to public reactions to President Olusegun Obasanjo’s declaration of his preparedness to die for Nigeria.

President Obasanjo had told a delegation of Chinese investors, which visited him, that he was ready to die to ensure the country’s development.

“Everything I do now is to protect Nigeria’s interest and if that will cost me my life, so be it,” he said.

The President said no obstacle would stop him from developing the country, adding: “We believe we can grow our economy by 10 percent every year and if we sustain that for 15 years, we will become a middle strength country industrially.”
