The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has expressed optimism that the entire arbitration decisions and judgment debt of $9.6 billion against Nigeria by a UK court over a botched gas contract would be set aside. The Minister stated this in London while reacting to Thursday’s ruling by a UK commercial court staying execution of the 9.6 billion dollar judgment debt and granting leave for Nigeria to appeal the decision in the UK appellate court. A text of the minister’s reaction was sighted by News9naija. The text reads; “We now have a fresh opportunity of arguing our case and even filing separate suit to argue that the entire judgment be set aside. “As we have been saying everywhere we go, we have been compiling arguments that will make our case and position to set aside the judgment debt, an easy thing,” he said. The minister noted that besides the victory in the court, the federal government delegation to the UK, had succeeded in changing the narratives of the case in favour of Nigeria, in the international community. The government delegation included the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN) and the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu and the Acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu. “We came here with the sole purpose of not just winning in court but also winning in the minds of the international community. “We started by visiting key media outlets, key business and financial groups such as Bloomberg, Financial Times, the Economists and others. “I must say that over 24 major publications that published our stories are from our own viewpoints. “What we are saying is that, until now, only the voice of P&ID was heard, only their own side of the story was heard but in the last four days our efforts in visiting the key media outfits and think tanks have paid off in changing the narrative,” he said. Mohammed said the meeting with investors and other stakeholders had also helped to change the negative narrative that the case might hamper foreign investments into the country. “Many of them at the meeting are investing in Nigeria and holding key positions in the society. “By the time we came out of the meeting, they had more empathy for our course and even many of them volunteered to serve our course in a very patriotic manner,” he said. The minister recalled that prior to the visit, the plaintiff, armed with the court judgment, had been threatening enforcement by way of attaching financial and associated assets of Nigerian state. He said with the relief granted by the court, the harassment by the company and its handlers of compiling the nation’s assets for attachment would stop. It would be recalled that the UK court had on Aug. 16 authorised P&ID, a little known Irish engineering and project development company to seize the 9.6 billion dollars, about N3.5 trillion in Nigerian assets over a failed contract. The court ruling was a fallout of the botched 20-year Gas and Supply Processing Agreement (GSPA) and the subsequent award made in July 2015 in favour of P&ID, by an arbitration panel sitting in London. The GSPA was purportedly entered into in 2010 between the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources and P&ID. In the failed contract, P&ID was to build a gas processing facility to refine associated natural gas into non-associated gas to power the national electric grid. On its part, the Ministry was to build pipeline to supply gas to P&ID facility to be located in Adiabo, Odukpani Local Government Area (LGA)of Cross River state. The agreement went sour because the company which did not build any facility at the agreed site, blamed the Ministry for not constructing the pipeline for gas supply alleging that it had committed 40 million dollars into the contract. https://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2019/09/27/nigeria-optimistic-pids-9-6b-judgment-will-be-set-aside/amp/ |

The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) says the forthcoming 2019 Abuja International Trade Fair will feature 45 foreign companies to strengthen businesses, trade and investment opportunities in the country. The ACCI Director General, Chief Tonia Shoyele, while briefing newsmen on Monday in Abuja said that the foreign companies were expected from India, Bangladesh, Ghana, Mali, Cote d’Voire and Cameroon, among others. Shoyele said that over the years, the chamber had a minimum of 30 foreign countries participating but the number had increased in this 13th edition because many embassies had declared interest to participate. She said that the multi-sectoral trade event had grown exceedingly in scope and strength as one of the biggest trade platforms for international and domestic exhibitors to promote new product lines, access new markets, build business relationships and grasp developing trend. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 13th tradefair, scheduled to hold from Sept. 21 to Sept. 29, would also feature a roundtable focused on the theme: “Remodelling SMEs Financing: Options and Solutions’’. Describing Nigeria as an 80 per cent Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) based country; she said it was on this background that the chamber decided to have a 100 per cent focus on SMEs. “Basically our mandate is to promote their businesses and handhold them till they get to the upper level. There will be a roundtable which CBN, Bank of Industry and others that are SMEs based participate to form policies and strategies to promote the SMEs,’’ she said. She said that the chamber had also put in place measures to provide adequate security personnel which include the Nigerian Police, Army, Anti Bomb Squad, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), among others. Dr Johnson Anele, the ACCI Vice president in charge of Commerce and Chairman, Abuja Trade Centre said that it would equally feature trade and investment profile presentations, exhibitions business matchmaking sessions and products/services presentation. Anele, who is also the Chairman, Organising Committee of the event, said that the trade fair would boost local content by encouraging growth of indigenous companies and patronage of made-in-Nigeria goods. “We want to encourage local exhibitors. We cannot be talking about local content when we have appetite for foreign made goods. “We will use the platform to canvass and encourage people to patronise and consume Nigerian products. “We are also encouraging many foreign exhibitors, we organise on regular basis trade missions for the international companies to establish good economic ties with them to enable them invest in Nigeria,” he said. Anele urged the stakeholders and related government agencies and parastatals to seize the opportunity to enlighten people on their activities for partnership and immense benefit. According to him, the trade fair will explore options and proffer solutions on how better the SMEs could be managed and upgraded to be able to contribute meaningfully to economic development. “Our focus is mainly on the SMEs, which is the engine room for the economic growth and provide the bulk of employment in the country and quite number of them constitutes the bulk of our membership. “We are also not neglecting other big conglomerates but we will focus on SMEs because of their importance and the role they play in national economic growth. “The Federal Government has a lot of programmes to support the SMEs but the unfortunate thing is that some of the programmes are not well known to the supposed beneficiaries,’’ he said. Anele added that the chamber also made provision of adequate infrastructure and facilities including construction of an ultra model convention centre with 7,000 capacity and conducive business atmosphere to host the world class international trade fair. The trade fair is designed to provide a neutral and open atmosphere for blue chip companies, trade groups association, government related agencies and private sector organisations to engage new business partners for investment and trade relations. More than 29 people were killed in twin militant attacks in northern Burkina Faso on Sunday, local media reported Monday. Both attacks occurred in the northern Sanmatenga province. In the meantime, 14 people were killed around 50 kilometres away when militants ambushed bicycle riders carrying food products, said the report. President Donald Trump said Saturday that he was calling off “peace negotiations” with Taliban leadership after a U.S. service member was killed in a suicide attack in Kabul, Afghanistan. Trump tweeted that he was scheduled to hold a secret meeting at Camp David Sunday with Taliban leadership and, separately, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. The United States has been working on a deal with the group that harbored 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden to pull troops out of Afghanistan and end the nation’s longest war. The meeting at Camp David would have come just days before the 18th anniversary of 9/11. Unbeknownst to almost everyone, the major Taliban leaders and, separately, the President of Afghanistan, were going to secretly meet with me at Camp David on Sunday. They were coming to the United States tonight. Unfortunately, in order to build false leverage, they admitted to he attack in Kabul on Thursday, for which the Taliban took credit, killed 12 and injured 42. “I immediately cancelled the meeting and called off peace negotiations,” Trump tweeted. “What kind of people would kill so many in order to seemingly strengthen their bargaining position?” It was just one of a number of attacks by the group in the past week, including attempts to take control of two Afghan cities, which reinforced fears in the country about what would happen if the U.S. withdraws. “If they cannot agree to a ceasefire during these very important peace talks, and would even kill 12 innocent people, then they probably don’t have the power to negotiate a meaningful agreement anyway,” Trump tweeted. https://www.news9naija.com.ng/2019/09/08/455/ |
