PoliticsDefection: Kwankwaso, Yusuf Disagree Over Alleged Coercion Of Kano Officials by buzmanjohn(op): 7:09am On Jan 15
The leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Wednesday, accused Kano State Government of Governor Abba Yusuf of forcing state officials and elected local government chairmen to sign documents indicating their defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party to the All Progressives Congress.

But in a swift reaction, Kano State Commissioner for Information, Ibrahim Waiya, dismissed the allegation, saying participation in the defection plan is entirely voluntary.

Speaking to The PUNCH on Wednesday, Waiya said, “What exactly happened is that our party is asking everybody—not only government officials—who are willingly ready to join APC to do so. But nobody is being compelled, contrary to what has been reported.”

Kwankwaso, in a post on Wednesday on his verified social media platforms, describing reports reaching him on the issue as deeply disturbing.

“I have received several reports—some good and some very terrible—indicating that the Kano State Government is compelling state officials and elected local government chairmen to sign documents either in support of Gandujiyya or Kwankwasiyya,” he alleged.

He described the development as disheartening, saying it was unfortunate for any government to resort to such actions.

“Our supporters should not take this lightly. It is very disturbing that a government would go so low,” Kwankwaso said.

He, however, advised affected local government chairmen and councillors to comply if necessary to avoid victimisation.

“Since it has reached this level, those being forced to sign the document may go ahead and do so in order not to be victimised by the government,” he added.

Kwankwaso also thanked supporters of the Kwankwasiyya movement for what he described as their steadfastness and continued loyalty.

The allegation comes amid sustained rumours that Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, may defect from the NNPP to the APC ahead of the next general elections.

Yusuf was elected in 2023 on the NNPP platform and is widely regarded as a political protégé of Kwankwaso.

The speculation has reportedly strained relations between both men and heightened political tension within the ruling party in the state.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Gwarzo, has reaffirmed his loyalty to Kwankwaso amid the growing uncertainty.

PUNCH gathered that Gwarzo, who returned to Nigeria on Tuesday night after performing the lesser Hajj in Saudi Arabia, paid a visit to Kwankwaso at his Miller Road residence in Kano shortly after his arrival.

Sources close to the deputy governor said the visit was aimed at reassuring Kwankwaso of his continued allegiance to the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya political movement.

“One of the key reasons for the visit was to personally reaffirm the deputy governor’s loyalty and commitment to the party and its ideology,” a party source said.

Further findings by The PUNCH revealed that other senior party figures, including the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Yusuf Kofar Mata; the Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the Governor, Sunusi Surajo Kwankwaso; and the factional chairman of the NNPP in Kano State, Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa, have also pledged support for Kwankwaso.

A senior NNPP official said, “This is a clear message that key figures within the government and the party remain firmly with Kwankwaso despite the ongoing defection speculation.”

Although Governor Yusuf has not publicly confirmed any plan to defect, analysts say the sustained rumours have exposed deepening divisions within the NNPP, with rival factions intensifying consultations ahead of possible political realignments.

As the situation unfolds, Kano’s political atmosphere remains tense, with party loyalists closely watching the next moves of both the governor and his former political mentor.

PoliticsUPDATED: 38 Arrested AAU Students To Be Released, Says Edo Commissioner by buzmanjohn(op): 2:01pm On Jan 14
The Edo State Government has announced that 38 students of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, arrested during unrest in the area last weekend, will be released.

The Commissioner for Education, Paddy Iyamu, told Channels Television on The Morning Brief on Wednesday that while some students were freed on Tuesday, others would regain their freedom later on Wednesday.

“We didn’t sleep till 1 a.m. this morning, trying to release the students, some of them yesterday. Altogether, we are releasing about 38 students,” the commissioner said.

Iyamu said the unrest was orchestrated by individuals living outside Edo State, who “fomented trouble, leading to the destruction of properties.” He added that “some items were stolen from the palace of the monarch in the area.

“On May 13 [2025], if I’m not mistaken, they had a peaceful protest in Edo state. People protested because of the cultism.

“And they did the procession straight to Government House, and the governor received them himself. He took them into his office. After addressing them outside, he took them into his office, and everything went on smooth.

“So one expects that if people are going to be also making their, their pains known, you need to do it in a very orderly manner so that the government in the usual manner will also take steps, but taking laws into their hands, going to steal, going into the palace of the king to do a lot is totally out of it,” he stated.

He further noted that following the return of normalcy, the government has approved the resumption of academic activities at the university.

“We have released the communiqué this morning. Students are to return to school on Monday.

“The schools resume in the central on Monday because normalcy has been restored. The governor is even still in the general area, trying to make sure that the peace is sustained, and so far, normalcy has been restored. Security agencies are doing a lot,” he added.

PUNCH Online reported that the arrests followed a protest on Saturday, initially aimed at highlighting insecurity in Ekpoma, which later turned violent after suspected hoodlums hijacked the demonstration, attacked traders, and set tyres on the roads to block vehicular movement.

Several activists and politicians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, condemned the arrests, describing them as a suppression of democratic expression.

However, the Edo State Government dismissed reports describing the unrest as a student protest, insisting that the incident was a “coordinated riot aimed at destabilising the state.” The government also rejected claims that the arrested individuals were AAU students or that arrests were made within student hostels.

Move to free students
On Tuesday, the government began efforts to secure the release of bona fide AAU students who were remanded at the Ubiaja Correctional Centre over their alleged involvement in the protest against frequent kidnappings in the community, which later turned Government Moves to Free Bona Fide Students.

The students were among 52 people arrested and subsequently remanded on Monday. Governor Monday Okpebholo deployed the Commissioner for Education, Paddy Iyamu, to facilitate the release of the students.

Speaking to journalists at the Ubiaja Correctional Centre, Iyamu said legitimate AAU students would be freed once all necessary administrative processes were completed.

“There is a lot of misinformation going on, especially on social media. I wonder how a protest will occur without the authorisation of the Student Union Government. The school is not in session, and the students were not involved,” Iyamu said.

He added, “We have a group tagged the ‘Comrade Association’ that co-opts students to carry out these dastardly acts. There was no letter written to the security agencies about any protest.

“These are ex-students of the university looking for an opportunity to latch onto any problem and cause mayhem. They went to the house of the traditional ruler and took Indomie and other items.

“That character does not depict that of Edo students. Governor Monday Okpebholo has said that any bona fide students will be released and walk home free.”

PoliticsOtti’s Wife Urges Inmates To Embrace Positive Transformation by buzmanjohn(op): 3:43pm On Jan 13
The Wife of the Governor of Abia State, Priscilla Otti, has urged the inmates of the Nigerian Correctional Facility, Arochukwu, in Arochukwu Local Government Area of the state, to embrace positive transformation and avoid actions that could lead them to crime again.

Otti, who gave the advice during a courtesy visit to the facility reassured the inmates that the state government prioritises their welfare and worth in the society.

It will be recalled that she has, in recent years, placed increasing emphasis on social welfare and inclusive governance, particularly for populations traditionally excluded from mainstream development planning.

Mental health facilities, leprosy settlements, motherless babies homes and correctional centres are in the centre of her social welfare outreaches.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Press officer to the governor’s wife, Ndubueze Justice, on Tuesday.

Otti, represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Women Affairs, Chinenye Nwaka, emphasised that correctional facilities exist not as places of rejection, but as centres for reformation and preparation for a more productive life after custody.

She said, “We are confident that the inmates would emerge from the correctional centre renewed, responsible, and better equipped to contribute meaningfully to society.

“Our visit is to assure them that they are not abandoned or forgotten as citizens of this state.”

In her remarks, the Controller of the Abia State Correctional Facility, Nwanyanwu Blessing, commended the First Lady for her sustained compassion and unwavering support for inmates across the state.

She described the Wife of the Governor as a reliable partner of the correctional system, noting that her interventions extend beyond the Arochukwu facility to other centres in Abia.

“These interventions have included skill acquisition programmes, provision of food items, cash assistance, and reading materials, all targeted at rehabilitation and successful reintegration.

“We express gratitude for the cash and food supplies donated during the visit. This gesture would greatly enhance the feeding and overall welfare of our inmates.”

Otti’s social welfare outreaches align with broader national and global commitments, including Nigeria’s social protection framework and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those addressing good health and wellbeing, reduced inequalities and peace, justice and strong institutions.

PoliticsEdo Protest: Okpebholo Condemns Attack On Monarch’s Palace by buzmanjohn(op): 9:57am On Jan 12
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has condemned the attack on the palace of the Onojie of Ekpoma, Zaiki Anthony Abumere II, by protesters.

A peaceful protest by the people of Ekpoma over insecurity and incessant kidnapping on Saturday was hijacked by hoodlums, who unleashed violence on the community.

They chased away traders at the livestock market, killed goats, beat cows, and attacked and destroyed parts of the Onojie’s palace.

The protest also resulted in the blockage of a major highway and the grounding of commercial activities.

However, on Monday, the governor, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Ebojele, condemned the attack when he visited the palace to ascertain the level of destruction allegedly caused by the protesters.

He said there was no justification for invading a traditional institution under the guise of expressing grievances over insecurity.

Governor Okpebholo was accompanied by top government officials, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, and leaders of the All Progressives Congress, including the Edo Central Senatorial leader, General Cecil Esekhaigbe (retd.), and other party stakeholders.

During the visit, the governor was taken around the palace and shown several items destroyed during the invasion. Vehicles within the palace compound were vandalised, while canopies and chairs were broken.

Cartons of Indomie noodles belonging to the Onojie’s wife, who trades in the product, were also destroyed. Doors and windows of the palace were damaged.

The governor described the invasion of the palace and the looting of property as criminal and unacceptable, stressing that protests must never be used as an excuse for lawlessness.

“I want to thank Your Highness for the love you have shown to me and our people over the years.

“Kidnapping is a serious problem across Nigeria, and that is why the President has taken bold steps, including withdrawing police from VIP duties, to strengthen the fight against insecurity,” the governor said.

He disclosed that a security meeting was held earlier in the week with a strong focus on Edo Central Senatorial District, particularly the Ekpoma axis, adding that the government had rolled out strategic, technology-driven security operations.

“We have carried out operations in Edo North and Edo South, and now we are in Edo Central. We will leave no stone unturned.

“The first operation was very successful—nine kidnapped persons in Etsako West were rescued unhurt and the kidnappers were arrested,” he stated.

Governor Okpebholo warned that those who hijacked the protest to vandalise the palace and loot property would be brought to justice.

“They came under the guise of protest and sentiments, then resorted to looting and violence. This is unacceptable and I condemn the act.

“We will go after them the same way we are going after kidnappers. Nobody should test our patience,” he said.

Emphasising his personal stake in the peace of Ekpoma and Esanland, the governor added, “I am an Esan man and I got my highest votes here in Ekpoma. I will not allow bad things to happen in this land.

“In the coming days, our actions will speak for themselves. Nobody involved in this criminality will be spared.”

Earlier, the royal father described the incident as unfortunate, alleging that many of the protesters were under the influence of illicit drugs.

“What transpired was very sad. Many of them were under the influence of drugs. If not for God’s intervention, something worse would have happened,” the monarch said.

He explained that he attempted to address the protesters when they first arrived but was prevented from doing so.

He said the protesters later returned while he was away attending a security meeting with other traditional rulers, forced their way into the palace and unleashed violence.

Governor Okpebholo assured the traditional ruler and the people of Ekpoma that decisive security operations were imminent, stressing that peace, law and order would be fully restored in the community and across Edo Central.

The Kano State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has removed the Fagge Divisional Officer following the death of a suspect in custody.

The divisional officer, along with all officers and men on duty at the time of the incident, have also been handed over to the Nigerian Police, Kano State Command, for further investigation and necessary action.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Abdullahi, a copy of which was made available to The Punch on Friday.

“Following the sad incident in which a suspect lost his life in Fagge divisional office and the subsequent setting up of panel of inquiry for discreet and fair investigation into the case, the state Commandant, NSCDC Kano State command, Mohammed Hassan Agalama has approved the removal of Fagge divisional officer, SC Amina Musa Kolawale.

“A new divisional officer, CSC Bashir Isa Abubakar, has now been deployed to replace her,” Abdullahi said.

While appealing for calm and peaceful coexistence, the NSCDC reassured the public of its commitment to “continuous respect to the sanctity of life, human rights as well as upholding professionalism, standard operational procedure, integrity and rule of law.”

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Benue State, Benjamin Omale, has called on party members in the state to participate actively in the ongoing e-registration exercise.

He also urged residents of the state to turn out en masse for the Continuous Voter Registration exercise being conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Omale made the call on Thursday while receiving a delegation of stakeholders from the Otukpo/Ohimini Federal Constituency, who paid him a courtesy visit.

The state party chairman emphasised the need for unity and commitment among members ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He said, “Let me use this opportunity to encourage our party members to actively participate in the ongoing e-registration exercise and, at the same time, urge the people of the state to turn out massively to register in the Continuous INEC Voter Registration exercise.”

Omale reaffirmed the party’s commitment to justice, equity, fairness and inclusive governance, assuring that the APC would continue to carry the people along in all its programmes.

Leader of the delegation and Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor, Musa Ujor, expressed appreciation to the party leadership and passed a vote of confidence in the APC at all levels.

The elders and stakeholders also expressed gratitude to Governor Hyacinth Alia for what they described as his generosity and inclusive governance towards the federal constituency, while passing a vote of confidence in President Bola Tinubu and the Benue State Governor.

They said the governor’s goodwill towards the zone was evident in the appointment of the Deputy Governor, the allocation of two key ministries—Finance and Health—and the position of APC State Chairman, all of which are occupied by indigenes of the Otukpo/Ohimini axis.

The delegation, comprising elders, women, youths and other critical stakeholders from Otukpo and Ohimini, unanimously declared their readiness to mobilise total support to ensure victory for the APC and Alia in the 2027 elections.

PoliticsPDP Faction Plans Meetings With Obi, Atiku Ahead Of 2027 by buzmanjohn(op): 2:16pm On Jan 07
The Peoples Democratic Party (South-South Chairman), Emmanuel Ogidi, has announced that the party will hold high-level meetings with former presidential candidate Peter Obi and ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Speaking on Wednesday’s edition of the morning brief on Channels Television, Ogidi emphasised that these consultations are key to restoring the party’s national influence.

“So we’re doing the rounds. We have already seen a former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, and a former President, IBB.

“So, it’s all about seeing those who are important in Nigeria to tell them that we are alive and we’re moving. I know you’re going to ask me about Obi. Yes, we also have plans to see Peter Obi.

“Even Atiku Abubakar, as the former vice president of the country, we are going to meet him. You see, PDP is the real face of democracy in Nigeria,” Ogidi said on the breakfast show.

Obi and Atiku are ex-members of the PDP, and they flew the party’s flag as vice presidential and presidential candidates, respectively, in 2019.

The former vice president was the PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections. But Atiku and Obi have joined the African Democratic Congress.

On Tuesday, members of the PDP National Working Committee met with ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, who served as the country’s leader under the party.

The group was led by the National Chairman, Tanimu Turaki, and other party chieftains at his Maitama office in Abuja.

Turaki told journalists, “We have his assurance that he remains an active, card-carrying member of the PDP and feels obliged to support the party; the PDP has done enough for him, and he will try his best to do more for the party.”

He said the former president’s remarks were “very reassuring and encouraging as we prepare for off-season elections in Ekiti and Osun, and the 2027 general elections.”

The PDP, the party that ruled Nigeria from 1999 to 2015, has been embroiled in crisis in the wake of the 2023 elections, which it lost to the All Progressives Congress.

At the moment, two groups are laying claims to the leadership of the party at the national level following the party’s convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, where the PDP expelled bigwigs like FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and ex-governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose.

PoliticsObi’s Defection From LP Shows Leadership Failure — Ex-delta Gov Aspirant by buzmanjohn(op): 6:45pm On Jan 06
Former Delta State governorship aspirant, Dr O’Diakpo Obire, has slammed Peter Obi’s defection from the Labour Party to the African Democratic Congress, saying strong political leaders do not abandon their party structures.

In an interview with Arise News on Tuesday, Obire said Obi’s inability to maintain a functional party structure after the 2023 general elections prompted his defection to the ADC.

“It’s a failure on his part as a leader already, because if he were a leader who could assemble people, who could assemble an army to go and fight, he should have been able to put the Labour Party together after the general election. But he failed to do that; the structure scattered,” Obire said.

He added that Obi not only inherited a weak structure but further dismantled it, leaving the party disjointed.

“In fact, there was no structure before, and he further dismantled the structure of the Labour Party. Now, he has gone to ADC to seek a greener pasture. There’s nothing wrong with that.

“A leader must be able to stand firm, put his house in order and be prepared with his loyalists to fight the political battle. He should begin by fixing the problems within the Labour Party.

“There is effectively no structure in the ADC; it merely comprises a group of disgruntled individuals. There is no guarantee that he will emerge as the presidential candidate of the party.”

Obire also questioned the credibility of the political figures now associated with ADC, noting their past roles in government.

“These are the same problems that have been there while they held sway in offices. Some of them were governors, some senators. They didn’t solve those problems then, so I don’t see what they are bringing now that will make Nigeria better.”

While critical of the opposition, Obire praised the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing ongoing reforms as bold and long-term oriented.

“The present administration is already on the right track. Nigeria is on the right track. We are having audacious moves in Nigeria for the first time,” he said.

“The president is looking at the long run, not the immediate effect, because Nigerians have to be fixed. And if we must fix Nigeria, we must be able to take some pains. And that is what the president is doing.”

On his own political ambitions, Obire clarified he will not run for office but pledged his support for candidates under the All Progressives Congress.

“I am fully in support of anyone who is running on the platform of the APC. And we are very hopeful that 2027 is going to be a free and fair election just as it was in 2023,” he said.

PoliticsAkwa Ibom Governor Signs ₦1.584 Trillion 2026 Budget Into Law by buzmanjohn(op): 10:23am On Jan 06
Akwa Ibom State governor, Umo Eno, has signed into law the 2026 appropriation Bill of N1,584,271,856,630.00 trillion.

The budget is made up of a recurrent expenditure of N416,594,925,850 billion, while N1,167,676,930,780 is earmarked for capital expenditure.

Speaking after signing the appropriation Bill during the enlarged State Executive Council meeting at the Exco Chambers, Government House on Monday, Eno commended the synergy between the House of Assembly and the Executive Arm of government.

The governor, who attributed the collaboration to the numerous achievements recorded in the state last year, urged members of the Council to be ready for total commitment and passion in service delivery, warning that no excuse would be tolerated for non-performance.

He said, ”We all must rededicate ourselves to delivering our tasks promptly and decisively. This year is not a year for excuses. It is a year for action.

“Let us endeavour to break all barriers, go the extra mile to deliver. And when we deliver, we can sit back and celebrate. We can then be recognised.”

Earlier, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Udeme Otong, lauded the Governor for his transparency and collaborative approach to governance, insisting that the House of Assembly is appreciative of the results achieved by his government.

Otong said, “You have implemented over 80% of the 2025 budget and the House of Assembly is ready to continue collaborating with the Executive, so other people will continue to be happy to have you as their governor.”

Briefing newsmen after the budget-signing exercise, Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Linus Nkan, flanked by the Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umanah, said, “Today at EXCO, we witnessed the signing of the 2026 budget, which was passed by the State House of Assembly late last year. The 2026 budget, which was presented to the House of Assembly on the 25th of November, 2025, had a total budget size of N1.39trn.

“After subjecting the budget to scrutiny in the State House of Assembly, where all the MDAs appeared for defence, a whole lot of adjustments were made by the various MDAs, and that adjustment led to an increase in the budget size by the sum of N194 billion, and that increased the total budget size to 1,584,000,000 Naira for the 2026 budget.

“The recurrent expenditure total is 416.5 billion, as against N354 billion originally proposed. Whereas the capital expenditure increased to N1,167 trillion from the original N1,035 trillion.

“We have today, a total budget size of 1,584,271,856,630 Naira to run with for the 2026 fiscal year and hopefully it is going to stimulate and drive development of our economy.“

Earlier, the governor presented an award of excellence to the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Anieti Udofia, as Commissioner of the Year, and lauded his passion and dedication which accounted for the success of the recently-concluded Christmas Unplugged 3:0.

He announced a cash prize of N20m to the Commissioner and another N100m to members of the planning committee of the event, and approved a one-week leave for the Commissioner.

In November, Eno presented a N1.39 trillion budget proposal for the 2026 financial year titled “The People’s Budget of Expansion and Growth.”

The budget presented marks a 16 per cent decrease (N260bn) from the revised 2025 budget.

“This unfortunate incident highlights the dangers associated with reckless driving and disregard for road safety regulations,” he noted, calling on the Federal Road Safety Corps to intensify road safety sensitisation and enforcement.

He urged drivers, transporters, marketers and commuters to prioritise safety, adhere to speed limits and avoid overloading.

"The Council remains committed to collaborating with relevant agencies to promote road safety across the local government area,” the statement added.

The incident comes barely a week after PUNCH Online reported that a fuel tanker crash near St. Louis College in Jos, Plateau State, left two people dead and 16 others injured.

The latest crash in Langtang brings the number of persons killed in various road accidents in Plateau State in the past two weeks to 25.

PoliticsInsecurity: Don’t let Trump promote religious war in Nigeria, Falana warns FG by buzmanjohn(op): 3:00pm On Jan 04
Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has said that members of the Nigerian armed forces, if properly funded and motivated, are capable of winning the war against terrorism and banditry in the country without foreign intervention.

He also called on Federal Government not to let Trump promote religious war in Nigeria.

Falana, who expressed regret that terrorists, as seen in their videos, appeared better equipped than members of the country’s armed forces, charged the Federal Government to adequately equip the military for victory in the war.

The senior advocate, who spoke in a chat with journalists in his Ilawe Ekiti hometown on Saturday, bemoaned how some known figures in the country stole funds meant for the purchase of arms and ammunition.

He urged the Federal Government to put in place a mechanism for the recovery of such funds and ensure they are used for their original purpose.

Falana said, “If the members of the armed forces are well equipped and motivated, they can deal with terrorism and banditry.

“But as a result of the neglect of vital security institutions over the years, the ragtag armies of criminal elements are winning the war on terror. It is a shame.”

The senior advocate, who lamented the role of corruption in the fight against insecurity, queried, “How do you fight terrorism in an environment where the money budgeted for the procurement of arms and ammunition is stolen by well-known criminal elements in society?

“From time to time, I defend military officers and soldiers who are charged with war crimes and other offences under the Armed Forces Act. I know that they are prepared to prosecute the counter-insurgency operation, but they lack vital equipment.

“The money earmarked for the procurement of arms and ammunition was stolen by a coterie of military officers and their civilian collaborators. The courts are not helping, as they hide under dubious technicalities to free indicted criminals who stole billions of naira in procurement funds.

“For instance, a service chief was charged with stealing ₦22.8bn. The Federal High Court freed him on the ground that he was not charged before a court martial. Meanwhile, he was charged with money laundering, which can only be tried exclusively by the Federal High Court.

“A former governor was charged with stealing ₦6.9bn from the Office of the then National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki. A judge has just freed him without even allowing him to defend himself.

“A few other military officers and civilians who stole about ₦200bn have been asked to go home and enjoy the stolen funds earmarked for the purchase of military hardware. Meanwhile, our soldiers are ill-equipped because of the criminal diversion of huge funds.

“So, the government must put in place a mechanism for the recovery of money meant for the procurement of arms and ammunition which has been stolen, with a view to using the funds for the purpose for which they were meant as a matter of urgency.

“If you equip your armed forces and motivate the members, Nigeria can fight terrorism and banditry without the intervention of any country. To secure Nigeria is not the business of any foreign nation; it is the duty of the government under the constitution, and that duty must be carried out by the government.

“There is no indication that the government is incompetent and cannot secure Nigeria. Since Nigerians know where the problems lie, we have a duty to compel the government of our country to carry out its responsibility under the law.”

Speaking in reaction to a US airstrike in Sokoto and the government’s statement that it provided intelligence for the operation, Falana said, “Let the Nigerian government be warned not to allow US President Mr Donald Trump to promote religious war in Nigeria. Trump is saying his intervention is to protect Christians.

“The criminals that are killing Nigerians do not care about religion; those who are collecting ransom after kidnapping Nigerians do not worry about religion. Therefore, the war against terror in Nigeria must be carried out without any attempt to divide our people along religious and ethnic lines.

“Also, you cannot end insecurity in a country without addressing social insecurity. If young people are unemployed and unemployment is on the increase, some of them are likely to be driven to criminality. It is often said that ‘the devil finds work for idle hands’.

“So while the government is being pressured to fund and equip the armed forces and the Nigerian Police Force, sufficient attention must be paid to youth unemployment,” he said.

Recall that insecurity took an ugly turn towards the end of last year, with increasing cases of banditry attacks, killings and kidnappings for ransom.

US President Donald Trump, who expressed concern over the situation in Nigeria, describing it as an attack on Christians, ordered airstrikes in Nigeria, which were reportedly carried out on a terrorist base in Sokoto on Christmas Day.

The Federal Government said it provided intelligence for the airstrike.

The development has generated mixed reactions across the country.

PoliticsNo One Is Too Poor To Give, Soludo Urges Alumni by buzmanjohn(op): 9:41am On Jan 03
Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to education reforms while attending the 50th anniversary of his alma mater, Uga Boys’ Secondary School, Uga, in Aguata Local Government Area of the state.

Soludo returned to the school on Friday as it marked 50 years since its establishment, using the occasion to restate his government’s resolve to strengthen public education and improve learning outcomes across Anambra State.

The governor, who wore his old-style secondary school uniform, joined staff, students, alumni and other guests at the golden jubilee celebration, recalling memories from his formative years and highlighting education as a critical foundation for societal development.

Reliving his days at Uga Boys’ Secondary School—then one of only four secondary schools serving the area—Soludo recalled his roles as Library Prefect and Senior Prefect before graduating as a member of the school’s pioneer class in 1980.

He said, “I stand here today not only as a former student but as someone deeply interested in the future of our education system. Education is the cornerstone upon which we will build a stronger, more prosperous state.

“I recall fond memories of my roles as Library Prefect and Senior Prefect before graduating as part of the school’s pioneer class in 1980.

“Those early experiences shaped my outlook and discipline. The commitment of the teachers then, including my Igbo teacher who is here with us today, set a standard of excellence that still inspires me.”

The governor took time to honour the founders and the community members who laid the groundwork for the school’s enduring legacy, commending the educators for their professionalism and dedication, calling them “unsung heroes” in the mission to nurture young minds.

He also outlined plans to further strengthen the education sector by recruiting additional teachers across the state, a move aimed at reducing class sizes and improving access to quality instruction.

“It is vital that we provide a conducive environment for learning, where every child can reach their full potential,” he stressed.

Looking ahead, the governor reiterated his vision of revitalising public schools, building on the successes of institutions like Uga Boys Secondary School, adding, “Our journey is far from over. By investing in education, we invest in our future leaders, innovators, and change-makers.”

Also taking to his Facebook account, the governor wrote, “I had the privilege of attending the 50th anniversary of my Alma mater, Uga Boys Secondary School. It was a trip down memory lane, meeting old classmates, junior colleagues, and most importantly, my amazing teachers who shaped my foundation.

“I am passionate about restoring the glory of public schools and bringing them to glory days. That’s why we are rebuilding Uga Boys and 21 other public schools into Smart Schools, one that will inspire future generations.

“I urge all Alumni to give back to the school that gave us a life. No one is too poor to give, and none is too rich to receive. May Anambra continue to win!”

The School Principal, Mr Benjamin Igwema, also shared his appreciation for the governor’s transformative efforts, saying, “Governor Soludo’s recent initiatives—especially the extensive reconstruction of our facilities—have dramatically improved the learning environment.

“This, coupled with his free education policy and WAEC sponsorship programmes, has not only boosted enrollment but also expanded opportunities for our students to thrive academically.

“The 50th anniversary celebration was not only a milestone for Uga Boys Secondary School, but also an inspiring reminder of the power of education—and the ongoing responsibility to nurture it for generations to come.”

Peter Cardinal Okpalaeke, Bishop Owen Nwokolo, and Mr Emeka Ezenwanyi were among a group of old boys of the school who graced the occasion.

Our correspondent reports that the 25kg bags of rice were distributed by the Nasarawa State chapter of the Christian Northern Nigeria Progressive Forum on behalf of the First Lady.

Speaking at the exercise in Akwanga Local Government Area on Wednesday, the State Coordinator of CNNPF, Kuje Alaphu, said the gesture is part of the Renewed Hope Initiative of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He explained that the outreach is designed to support the underprivileged across all 13 local government areas in the state.

“This food outreach ensures no one is left behind and promotes food security during this festive season,” Alaphu said.

“The bags were given to the Christian Northern Nigeria Progressive Forum across the 19 northern states, and we in Nasarawa State are happy to benefit from the First Lady during this year’s Christmas and New Year celebrations, as she has always done.”

PoliticsFG Reshuffles NCAA Directors Amid Corruption Allegations by buzmanjohn(op): 9:40am On Dec 26, 2025
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has reshuffled critical directors in the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, following rumours of serious corrupt practices by key officers of the aviation regulatory agency.

The reshuffle of the senior officers may not be unconnected with allegations of inefficiency and compromised oversight in the agency’s Directorate of Airworthiness Standards.

This comes as the Nigeria Safety Investigation Board, on December 14, 2025, and December 16, 2025, respectively, issued reports indicating major aircraft incidents involving unscheduled aircraft.

According to the reports, a Hawker 800XP with eight persons on board crash-landed at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, while a Cessna 172 aircraft also crashed on approach at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri. However, none of the four persons on board the latter aircraft was hurt.

In a report by ThisDay newspaper barely a week ago, the minister confirmed awareness of the rumour against the agency and also confirmed receipt of documents in that regard. Keyamo vowed to launch an investigation into the allegations and said he would make the results of the investigation public.

Speaking with the newspaper, the minister expressed worry that since the documents had been in the public space, concerned authorities had not reacted to the allegations. He said his ministry was conducting a comprehensive investigation into the matter, insisting that, as Minister of Aviation, he could not allow anything that would threaten air safety under his watch.

Less than seven days later, the reshuffle was effected under the directive of the minister. The Directorate of Airworthiness Standards in the NCAA is a powerhouse through which the agency ensures civil aircraft are safe and meet high standards.

It oversees certification, maintenance, and ongoing compliance with International Civil Aviation Organisation rules, handles aircraft registration, issues Certificates of Airworthiness, approves Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul, develops technical standards to keep aircraft airworthy throughout their life cycle, and ensures reliability for flight operations.

However, the directorate has been in the eye of the storm, with different fingers pointing at the section over alleged irregularities. The allegations gained urgency following a series of aircraft incidents investigated by the Nigeria Safety Investigation Board.

On December 14, 2025, a Hawker 800XP aircraft, registered as 5N-ISB, crash-landed at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport with eight persons on board after experiencing a landing gear anomaly.

Two days later, a Cessna 172 aircraft, registered as 5N-ASR, crashed on approach to the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri. No fatalities were recorded in either incident.

Earlier accidents included the August 1, 2023, crash of a Jabiru J430 aircraft, registered as 5N-CCQ, which reportedly occurred shortly after the aircraft was issued a Special Certificate of Airworthiness. This certification was among several approvals issued without exhaustive technical scrutiny, it was learnt.

With the reshuffle, Godwin Balang, formerly Director of Aerodromes and Airspace Standards, has been redeployed to head the Directorate of Airworthiness Standards, while Alhaji Ahmad Abba, the former Director of Special Duties in the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, was redeployed to the Directorate of Aerodromes and Airspace Standards to replace Balang.

Balang formally assumed office at his new department on Tuesday at the headquarters of the NCAA in Abuja. It was learnt that the move was an intervention measure aimed at tightening control over a department accused by insiders of regulatory laxity and procedural compromise.

Sources at the ministry, who did not want their names in print for fear of reprimand, told The PUNCH that Balang formally assumed office at his new department on Tuesday at the headquarters of the NCAA in Abuja.

A ministry source said, “The airworthiness department is where safety either stands or collapses. When leadership is changed at that level, it is rarely accidental.”

When contacted, the media aide to the minister, Tunde Moshood, said the reshuffle was for administrative effectiveness, adding that the investigation opened by the minister was still ongoing.

He said, “It has nothing to do with the complaints; sometimes you just must do some things. The investigation is still ongoing.”

PoliticsYuletide: Uphold Core Values, COAS Tells Soldiers by buzmanjohn(op): 9:28am On Dec 26, 2025
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has called on officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army to renew their commitment to the ideals of unity, discipline, and professionalism in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.

In a post obtained from the Nigerian Army’s X handle on Friday, the COAS made the call while addressing a cross-section of officers and soldiers of 81 Division Nigerian Army and Special Forces troops of Operation Restore Hope at the 243 Recce Battalion Parade Ground, Ibereko Barracks, Badagry, Lagos.

Speaking through his representative, the Corps Commander Ordnance, Major General A. G. Ibrahim, the COAS expressed gratitude to God Almighty for His continued grace and protection over the nation and the gallant troops of the Nigerian Army.

He noted that the celebration of Christmas provides an opportunity for sober reflection on the virtues of love, sacrifice, compassion, peace, and unity, which are central to Christian teachings and strongly aligned with the core values and ethos of the Nigerian Army.

Shaibu commended the officers and soldiers for their resilience, courage, and unwavering commitment to duty in the face of evolving security challenges across the country.

“Remain loyal to constituted authority, uphold the highest standards of discipline, and continue to conduct yourselves professionally in all engagements,” he urged.

The COAS reassured the troops of the Army Headquarters’ commitment to improving their welfare, training, and operational effectiveness, noting that these remain critical to sustaining morale and enhancing mission success.

He also encouraged them to maintain harmonious relationships with host communities and to remain vigilant during the festive period.

In his remarks, the General Officer Commanding, 81 Division Nigerian Army, thanked the COAS for his consistent support and leadership, assuring him of the division’s continued dedication to the discharge of its duties in line with the Nigerian Army’s operational mandate.

PoliticsPolice Deploy 1,000 Officers Across Borno After Mosque Bomb Blast by buzmanjohn(op): 8:54am On Dec 25, 2025
The Borno State Police Command has deployed over 1,000 officers across major streets, flashpoints and churches as Christians celebrate Christmas, following a bomb blast that killed five people and injured 35 others at a mosque on Wednesday evening.

PUNCH Online had reported that the blast occurred around 6pm when worshippers had gathered at the Al-Adum Mosque for prayers in Gamboru Market, Maiduguri.

Speaking exclusively to our correspondent on Thursday morning, the spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, Nahum Daso, said that although security measures were already in place, Wednesday’s incident necessitated heightened security arrangements.

Daso said the police, in collaboration with other security agencies, would dominate all worship centres and recreational facilities, while urging residents to go about their lawful activities.

He said, “There will be full domination of security personnel at churches, recreational centres, and strategic locations where people are massively going to. We are on standby.

“It is a joint operation between the police and all emergency and security response teams. The command has deployed over 1,000 personnel within Maiduguri.”

He emphasised that, “Though there were earlier security arrangements, however, with what happened yesterday, we are making it more intense.”

The Police Public Relations Officer called on members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movement.

“We call on members of the public to go about their lawful business. But they should be very mindful and careful of their surroundings and use the designated emergency response number.

“Any suspicious person they see around them should be immediately reported,” he said.

Daso also stated that individuals would be screened before gaining access to worship centres, including churches and mosques.

“In terms of clearance, any individual going to churches must be properly scanned. And the same thing too for the mosque,” he said.

PUNCH had earlier reported that the Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, condemned the bomb attack on the mosque, describing it as inhumane and barbaric.

Zulum, in a statement issued on Wednesday night by his Special Adviser on Media, Dauda Iliya, called for increased vigilance and heightened security measures, particularly at places of worship during the festive period.

The governor said, “I am deeply saddened by the Gamboru mosque suicide attack which occurred on Wednesday evening when worshippers were performing Maghrib prayer, killing 5 people and injuring 35 others. The act is utterly condemnable, barbaric and inhumane.”

He added, “Attacking a place of worship is a desecration of the sanctity of the mosque at a time when Muslim faithful are performing acts of worship.

“I wish to express my condolences to the families of all those who lost their lives in the attack and pray for the repose of their souls, and for the speedy recovery of those injured,” he stated.

The governor assured residents that adequate measures had been taken to forestall any security breach during the festive period and beyond.

PoliticsAliyu Unveils New Security Strategy To End Banditry In Sokoto by buzmanjohn(op): 8:48am On Dec 25, 2025
Sokoto State Governor, Ahmad Aliyu, has rolled out new initiatives to intensify the fight against banditry, saying his administration is determined to make the menace a thing of the past.

The governor disclosed this on Wednesday while declaring open the 17th regular State Executive Council meeting in Sokoto, described as the last council session for the year 2025.

Banditry has been a major cause of rural insecurity in Sokoto, characterised by violent attacks, mass displacement of villagers, livestock rustling, kidnappings for ransom, and disruption of socio-economic activities.

Aliyu said the new measures, which complement ongoing security efforts, are designed to strengthen intelligence gathering and improve coordination with security agencies, noting that existing strategies were already yielding positive results.

According to him, since assuming office, his administration has consistently supported security agencies with logistics and other critical resources to boost their operational capacity across the 13 local government areas affected by banditry.

“Intelligence remains a critical factor in checkmating criminal elements, and we are confident that these new initiatives will further enhance our capacity to tackle banditry decisively,” the governor said.

Aliyu appealed to residents to continue supporting government efforts and to collaborate with security agencies by providing timely and useful information.

“As a government, we are ready to do all it takes to ensure that banditry becomes history in Sokoto State, but we cannot do it alone,” he added.

The governor commended members of the State Executive Council for their commitment, attributing the administration’s achievements so far to their support and teamwork.

He also thanked the people of the state for their prayers and cooperation, assuring them of more dividends of democracy.

Aliyu used the occasion to congratulate the newly appointed Head of the Civil Service, Abdulkadir Ahmed Mohamed, and the Senior Special Assistant on Cabinet Matters, Bande Rika, urging them to contribute meaningfully to the realisation of his administration’s nine-point Smart Innovative Agenda.

PoliticsMy Father’s Death Turned Me To Lagos Hawker – Akwa Ibom Governor by buzmanjohn(op): 2:03am On Dec 21, 2025
Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has recounted how the death of his father forced him to hawk soft drinks on the streets of Lagos to help his mother make ends meet.

Eno made the revelation while delivering the Convocation Lecture at the 7th Convocation of Mountain Top University, Ibafo, Ogun State, on Thursday.

He said his father, a police officer, died in the line of duty and life became difficult for him.

The governor said, “Life became very difficult after my father’s death. I had to help my mother augment the family’s income by hawking soft drinks on the streets of Lagos, even as a Senior Prefect of Victory High School.”

He described those early struggles as the foundation of his entrepreneurial spirit, which later saw him run one of the largest hospitality conglomerates in Akwa Ibom State.

Eno urged graduates to dream big, embrace creativity, and work hard, warning against entitlement and the desire for quick success.

Eno, in a statement issued by the Press Unit of the Akwa Ibom State Government House in Uyo, on Friday, urged Nigerian youths to discard the entitlement mentality and quest for an easy path to success.

He stated that contemporary society, reshaped by technological advancement and the breach of known boundaries, required a creative mindset that dared to challenge long-held norms.

The statement read partly, “Let me state here that we are living in a world shaped by new realities, a world where known boundaries have been breached and expanded by advancements in technology, where values once considered sacrosanct are no longer the defining ethos, and where groupthink is rapidly dissolving and being replaced by the need to do something daring, something different, and something that challenges long-held norms.

“The majority of the graduands here belong to the now-famous Generation X. Quite a number of people in this generation believe in the concept of immediate gratification and, to some extent, an entitlement mentality.

“They want to achieve success without putting in the corresponding hard work, and most times, they crash and burn.”

He stated that the growth of his business was made possible by his “implicit faith in the Invisible Hands of God to bring destiny helpers who would propel me to the heights God had destined for me.”

Maintaining that the road to success is not all rosy, he said: “You will achieve success only if you are upright in your dealings and guided by ethics and morality, and with faith in God. Whenever I remember my small beginnings and how God stepped in to arrange my path and the people who led me to the point He had destined for me, I am in awe of His mercies and grace.

“God can and will do the same for you, but you must learn to start something, grow something, dream of something, and put in the hard work.”

Eno said that despite his current roles as a minister of the Gospel, an entrepreneur, and a politician, he had not forgotten the grounding he received from his parents, the humility he wears as a badge of honour, and a deep sense of compassion for the poor and downtrodden.

The Chancellor and General Overseer of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, Professor Daniel Kolawole Olukoya, lauded Governor Eno for inspiring the graduands.

He said: “We specially honour and thank our Convocation Lecturer, His Excellency, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno, the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, for accepting to be part of this historic celebration. Your presence dignifies this occasion; your words inspire this generation; and your example reminds us that leadership can be both competent and values-driven.”

The Vice-Chancellor of Mountain Top University, Professor Elijah Adebowale Ayolabi, commended the Governor for honouring the occasion and delivering a stimulating and inspiring lecture.

PoliticsUK Extends Nigerian Officers’ Visas To Avert Prison Collapse by buzmanjohn(op): 5:57am On Dec 20, 2025
The United Kingdom Government has granted emergency visa extensions to hundreds of foreign prison staff, the majority of whom were Nigerians at risk of deportation since changes were made to UK visa rules in July this year.

The British Broadcasting Corporation reported on Friday that the move followed warnings that several prisons were facing an acute staffing crisis.

According to the BBC, the exemption applies only to applicants already in the UK and will run until the end of 2026, with a reduced salary threshold of £33,400 remaining in place until December 31, 2027.

Under recent visa rule changes, the British government raised the skilled worker visa threshold to £41,700 annually, above the average starting salary for new prison officers, which stands at about £33,000 outside London.

The BBC reported that the Prison Officers Association had warned that the new threshold could cost jails more than 2,500 overseas recruits, describing the potential impact as “catastrophic” for prison stability.

The union, while welcoming the exemption, called it a victory for “common sense.” Its General Secretary, Steve Gillan, was quoted as saying, “It might not be perfect, but it will mean the prison service can hopefully remain stable.”

The association’s national chairman, Mark Fairhurst, added, “Our members can now go about their daily lives without the threat of removal from the country.”

According to the BBC, The Times reported that Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood initially opposed the exemption, arguing that priority should be given to recruiting British citizens.

The British media company said earlier in the week that Justice Secretary David Lammy had told MPs he was in discussions with Mahmood over the issue, stressing that while he wanted more local recruitment, meeting demand for prison places was the immediate priority.

A Home Office source told the BBC that prisons were being treated differently because of their importance to public safety and national security, adding that Mahmood wanted the exemption to be temporary.

A Ministry of Justice source said the prison system was under strain and that the exemption would provide “breathing space” to put in place a programme for recruiting more UK-based officers.

A government spokesperson said, “Net migration has already fallen by more than two-thirds under this government. However, public safety is the first duty of any government, and we must ensure prisons continue to operate safely with the right level of experienced staff.”

According to the BBC, prisons have been allowed to sponsor visa applications for overseas recruits since 2023 due to a shortage of British applicants.

The British media reported that more than 700 Nigerians were recruited to UK prisons last year, accounting for 29 per cent of applicants and 12 per cent of staff hired in England and Wales, making Nigerians the most common nationality after Britons to apply for or secure prison jobs in 2024. Ghanaians followed, with about 140 job offers.

SportsWilfred Ndidi Named Super Eagles Captain by buzmanjohn(op): 12:10am On Dec 20, 2025
Beşiktaş midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi, has been appointed as the new captain of the Super Eagles ahead of the African Cup of Nations in Morocco.

PUNCH Online reports that this was made known in a post on the Super Eagles’ handle on Friday.

“Wilfred Ndidi has been named captain of the Super Eagles and says the responsibility means everything as Nigeria heads to Morocco,” the post read.

Ndidi’s first assignment will be leading the three-time African champions as they push for glory at AFCON in Morocco.

To achieve that, the player knows that unity is key and is rallying his teammates to back themselves to victory in the Maghreb.

“It’s a huge responsibility, and with the help of the players, I think everything will go smoothly,” the former Leicester City player told the Super Eagles media team.

“I’ve had a conversation with a couple of players, just some of the older players. You know, just try to make them understand the reason why we’re here. Also, you need the support from the staff. We’re all in this together,” Ndidi said.

The player’s appointment came in the wake of the retirement of William Troost-Ekong, the team’s stand-in captain, and Ahmed Musa, who was the leader of the pack.

While Musa had yet to feature for Nigeria for several months and was an unused substitute in the 2023 AFCON, Troost-Ekong’s retirement from the national team came as a surprise to many fans in the country.

The defender was named in the Super Eagles’ preliminary squad for the 2025 edition of the continental showpiece but called time on his Nigerian career before the final list of players was released.

Nigeria are in Group C of the 2025 AFCON alongside Tanzania, Uganda, and Tunisia.

The Super Eagles’ first game is on December 23.
