The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has refuted the claims of striking civilians in its recent airstrike, insisting that the operation was based on credible intelligence about the presence of a major terrorist logistics base in the Yadi Forest. The NAF stated that the recent airstrike was part of its ongoing Operation WHIRL PUNCH (OPWP), aimed at targeting terrorist hideouts in Kaduna and surrounding areas. Group Captain Kabiru Ali, Deputy Director of Public Relations and Information for NAF, explained that the strike was focused on a known logistics base used by notorious terrorist leaders, including Kadade Gurgu, a close associate of Dogo Gide. He added that the facility was identified through extensive intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations, which confirmed a significant presence of terrorists and their motorcycles in the area. However, villagers claimed that over 25 people, including worshippers and traders, were killed in an airstrike conducted by the NAF in the Jika da Kolo community, Yadin Kidandan, Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Villagers claimed that 23 worshippers were killed during prayers at the mosque, while others lost their lives at the market. Abdullahi Ismail, a councillor representing the area, confirmed the tragic event, noting that while the region has long been plagued by banditry, innocent civilians, including children and farmers, were among those who perished in the strike. A Jika Kolo villager who craved anonymity also confirmed the incident to journalists saying, “Yes; it is true that there was a strike by a plane on Friday at a mosque in Jika da Kolo village that claimed many lives, including a few from our village who went to their farms or to do business at the local market close to the mosque. Many people were killed, among them farmers and children who had gathered around the mosque” “We heard a loud sound as the bomb dropped. Bodies were mutilated, and we had to bury 23 people, including children, who were gathered at the mosque. “The strike disfigured the bodies of most of those affected. Of course, Yadin Kidandan is a danger zone because it is under the control of bandits. But some innocent villagers still live around there because they have no other place to go just like the casualties that we witnessed on Friday. So, we discovered that when the strike occurred, most of the people at the mosque died.” “It was a crowded place because there was a local market close to the mosque which was also affected. The incident happened around 2 pm,” the villager said. The NAF, however, added that their ISR platform had detected terrorists attempting to flee as the aircraft approached the area, but the operation successfully hit the intended target, engulfing the base in flames. NAF insists that there was no civilian infrastructure in the area, and the airstrike specifically targeted terrorist elements. “Reports from independent sources, including local informants, confirmed that the logistics base was completely destroyed, and scores of terrorists were killed as a result of the attack. There was no mosque at the targeted location, and the operation was a success in dismantling the terrorists’ network,” Group Captain Ali stated. The villagers, however, maintain that civilians were caught in the crossfire, urging the Federal and Kaduna State governments to launch an investigation into the incident. They expressed concerns that many innocent people, who had no choice but to remain in the region due to the ongoing insecurity, were now victims of military operations intended to flush out bandits. In response, the NAF reiterated its commitment to working closely with surface forces to continue targeted interdictions against bandit strongholds across the North-West and North-Central regions. The military vowed to maintain pressure on terrorist networks and to ensure that their safe havens are decimated. “The Nigerian Air Force, in collaboration with ground forces, will continue to dominate the battle space through constant patrols and targeted strikes to eliminate the threat of terrorism in these regions,” the statement from Group Captain Ali concluded. https://thenationonlineng.net/naf-refutes-killing-of-25-civilians-in-kaduna-airstrike/

The 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has said the Peoples Democratic Party is dead in the country. Speaking on Saturday during the inauguration of a renovated party office in Katsina State, Kwankwaso said he and his followers left the PDP because “it is dead”. “I wish to remind you that PDP is dead because we left the party. Since they have gone out of the line, we decided to check out,” he said. Kwankwaso also said he would win the 2027 presidential election, adding that the NNPP is ready to take over the presidency and more than the states. The former Governor of Kano State said Nigerians should not be deceived by gifts or money during the next general election. Also speaking, Katsina NNPP chairman, Armaya’u Abdulkadir, said the party in the state is doing everything possible to enlighten the electorate on the party’s new logo. Abdulkadir said the new logo symbolises education for all, which is the main focus area of the Kwankwasiyya leader. “There is the need for the party to embark on grassroots sensitisation to inform the members on the importance of the new logo,” he said. https://punchng.com/pdp-is-dead-says-kwankwaso/

Increased demands for foreign exchange for foreign travel, school fees, and the planned food import duty waiver have pushed the naira to a fresh depreciation spree in the week ended. The Nigerian currency, which had opened September on a positive note across the segments of the currency market, weakened by Tuesday on the back of heightened demand. On the unofficial market, the naira had been quoted at N1,635 on Monday; however, by Tuesday, it had worsened to N1,640, according to some Bureau De Change operators in Lagos. As of Friday, a BDC operator, Musa Abbah, said he sold dollars at the rate of N1,670 and bought at N1,665. Asked about the sharp increase, he said, “Dollar has gone up since yesterday. Dollar is scarce in the market.” On the official Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market domiciled on the FMDQ Securities Exchange, the naira gained 0.81 per cent or N12.79 as the dollar was quoted at N1,585.77 compared to N1,598.56 quoted in the previous trading session. At the close of trading on Thursday, the naira stood at N1639.41/$, marking a 0.83 per cent decline or N13.53 depreciation in the value of the naira between the two trading periods. The volume of traded dollars also dropped by 9.7 per cent to $185.79 from $205.76m on Wednesday. FMDQ data on Friday indicated that the naira closed at N1593.32/$, a 2.81 per cent appreciation from N1639.41/$. The daily turnover also rose to $245.17m from a low of $185.79m. Asset management firm, Afrinvest, in its monthly market report for August, had projected that the naira would be under pressure if supply was not boosted. “In the absence of a significant inflow to boost FX supply, we expect the naira to be pressured in the month, due to the seasonality effect, as PTAs and BTAs demand peaks,” a portion of the report read. In terms of foreign exchange inflow, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, in an interview with Bloomberg TV in London in June, disclosed that the country recorded a total foreign exchange inflow of about $24bn in the first quarter of 2024. While there is no data for subsequent months, the apex bank in August announced that in July, it recorded a significant increase in remittance to $553m, a 130 per cent increase from the same period in 2023. “This figure represents the highest monthly total inflows on record and reflects ongoing efforts by the CBN to enhance liquidity in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market,” the CBN said in a statement. Meanwhile, Nigeria’s foreign capital inflow has decreased to $770m in the fourth month of 2024, marking a decrease of 57.22 per cent from the $1.80bn recorded in March 2024, according to the April 2024 Monthly Economic Report published by CBN. The report attributes the decline in foreign capital inflow primarily to a reduction in investments in money market instruments. Rating firm, Agusto & Co., submitted in its latest insights on the Gross Domestic Product that with the liberalisation of the foreign exchange market in June 2023, the performance of the oil sector has become even more critical to maintaining exchange rate stability in the near term. The Head of Financial Institutions Ratings at the firm, Ayokunle Olubunmi, said, “This period is one the periods that you have the highest demand for forex in Nigeria. One, you have people who are in foreign schools and would need to pay for their school fees. There are people also going on holiday. Also, businesses start to restock in preparation for the ‘ember’ period. So, the demand is high. “The main issue has to do with our source of FX as a country. Unfortunately, we have not been able to expand it significantly. Our crude oil production has not been great, and that is primarily our main source as non-oil exports have not been a significant contributor to forex.” The Chief Executive Officer of Economic Associates, Dr Ayo Teriba, postulated that the planned food import duty waiver had compounded the situation. He said, “I had been worried that this would happen when the government started talking about duty waiver for food importation for 180 days. So, you can see the demand by those who want to take advantage of the duty waiver and source for foreign exchange in the market in the face of limited supply and that is explaining the latest round of weakening of the exchange rate. “During these 180 days, those who were not importing food before may want to take advantage of the policy incentive to import, thereby, putting pressure on the foreign exchange market. This was what I was worried about when they were piloting those policies, and now, it seems the chickens are coming home to roost.” Teriba dismissed the claims that there was enough supply in the market, saying, “What is the evidence that there is enough supply? You can hear that NNPC owes billions of dollars and NNPC is owed by the government. So, if they can’t pay that debt to parties that we are dealing with, who is talking of enough supply?” Recall that on Friday night, the CBN announced the sale of dollars to Bureau De Change operators following days after the Nigerian Naira has been taking a beating at both the official and parallel market where it depreciated to about 1,670/$ on Friday. The circular partly read, “This is to inform the Bureau De Change Operators and the general public that we are providing more liquidity into the market. To this end, the CBN has approved the sale of US$20,000.00 to each eligible BDC at the rate of N1,580/$. This is to meet the demand for invisible transactions.” The National President of the Association of Bureau De Change Operators of Nigeria, Aminu Gwadebe, in an interview with Sunday PUNCH, disclosed that even without the promised liquidity in the system, the depreciation of the naira had eased on Friday. He maintained that it was essential for the CBN to provide liquidity in the market as it boosts market confidence. “The problem is the inflation. Once there is inflation, the dollar is used as a store of value. That is one aspect of the public, and you cannot also rule out the demand from the government side and rule out the demand from the reinstated 42 items. Those are sources of pressure on the limited supply in the market. “Of course, the food import waiver is a factor. Every businessman would want to utilise the opportunity, so there is an additional source of pressure,” he stated. Gwadebe added that the practice of some state governors turning their federal allocations into dollars, which is another source of pressure, was a practice that had been going on for a long time. A former Chief Economist at Zenith Bank, Marcel Okeke, also echoed the opinion that heightened demand for FX due to travel and school fees has an impact. “Part of it is the fact that people are going for summer, people are paying school fees amid inadequate supply. The other side of the supply is we are not getting enough Foreign Direct Investment. You can get Foreign Portfolio Investment, and they go out, but when it comes to bringing in real money in dollar terms or hard currency, we don’t see that which compounds the supply side challenges,” he said. https://punchng.com/food-import-waiver-others-push-naira-to-new-low/

Ahead of the festive period, MTN Nigeria is partnering the Federal Road Safety Corps to temporarily open the Amawbia, Anambra State sections of the partially completed Enugu-Onitsha Dual Carriage Way. PUNCH Online reports that MTN is the financier of the dual carriageway that connects Anambra and other South-East states. The Coordinator, MTN Community Liaison Initiative, Dr Reginald Facah, during a press conference in Amawbia, near Awka, Anambra State, said the road was opened to ease traffic flow for South-East commuters travelling during the Yuletide. Facah noted that there has been a high influx of traffic along the Onitsha carriageway resulting in gridlock because of the Yuletide season, adding that the essence of opening the road is to decongest the traffic to make travelling seamless for road users. He said, “Today, we are gathered to temporarily open the partially completed sections of the Enugu-Onitsha Dual Carriage Way, not because the entire project is ready, but because December and Christmas have seen unimaginable suffering on the parts of commuters and drivers on this same road. “However, with today’s opening of the Amawbia section and the opening of Amawbia flyover, an untrammeled driving experience is once again here for human and vehicular traffic which are usually heat during this period.” On his part, the Senior Manager Sales, MTN, Emmanuel Okereke, said the organisation is excited to partner with the Federal Government on a road infrastructure tax credit scheme to complete the rehabilitation of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway. Okereke said, “This road does not only connect Enugu and Anambra states; it is a gateway to the rest of the country and Africa. Our commitment is to deliver an expressway that will be the pride of the South-East people and Nigerians in general.” In his remarks, Sector Commander FRSC, Anambra State, Adeoye Irelewuyi, said, “At festive periods like this, this section of the road always experienced very serious traffic jam at the slightest obstruction to traffic flow usually causes a pile-up in both directions. “It is therefore with great joy and relief that the Anambra State Command of the FRSC is marking this occasion of the temporary opening of this section. “We surely believe that it will ease the traffic jam usually experienced at the Amawbia flyover and underpass, as well as reduce road traffic crashes on the stretch. The Sector Commander appealed to the people of the state and indeed all road users travelling during and after this Yuletide period to always exercise patience. Earlier, the Anambra State Commissioner for Transport, Patricia Igwebuike, lauded MTN for their timely intervention and encouraged road users to use the road with caution, especially the Yuletide. https://punchng.com/yuletide-frsc-opens-enugu-onitsha-highway-to-ease-traffic/?amp

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Chief Samuel Ogbuku, has described the electoral process in the Bayelsa State governorship election as peaceful. Ogbuku, who spoke to journalists shortly after casting his vote at Unit 001 in Ward 3 of Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, said that in spite of the initial glitches, the Independent National Electoral Commission was able to put their machines in order and commended the commission for a job well done. The NDDC MD, while expressing confidence that the All Progressives Congress will emerge victorious, noted that information from communities around the state shows that the process went on peacefully. He, however, used the opportunity to assure the people of the Niger Delta that he would use his good office to extend the dividend of democracy to the Niger Delta States.
