“What that means is we do not generate results and that means we are given to influence anything here. We only collate what comes to us and to ensure that we do it correctly, what we do is to test the correctness of values as the results are announced.”

So far, the total number of votes cast was 1,123,302, and the number of rejected votes was 16,798, and the total number of valid votes was 1,107,248

He said, “It is very strange that at this time in Nigeria, we still see elections as a do-or-die affair but elections should not be seen as do-or-die affairs.

She is seeking to make history as the first elected female governor in the country.

The PDP polled a total of 235,379 votes while the APC has an aggregate of 214,043.

The results showed the PDP has won Guyuk, Jada, Gombi, Shelleng, Demsa, Lamurde, Girei, Hong and Madagali LGAs.

The APC on the other hand triumphed in Ganye, Mubi North, Mayo Belwa and Maiha LGAs, according to the results announced by the collation officers in the presence of the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Yunusa Hudu and Prof. Mohammed Mele, the state collation officer.

In Niger, the APC is set to produce the governor as its candidate, Umar Bago is in an early lead going by the results so far declared which indicated that he is leading in 12 out of the 14 LGAs.

However, his PDP rival, Isah Kantigi won three local government areas.

Fifteen out of the 25 local government areas in the state have been collated while the remaining 10 are yet to be announced.

He explained that the APC candidate defeated his closest challenger and the ruling party in the state, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Sa’idu Umar Ubandoma with a vote margin of 49,029.

Ahmed Aliyu the candidate of the APC polls a total number of 453,661 votes to defeat the PDP who gained a total number of 404,632 votes.

As declared by the local government Collation officers of INEC in the governorship election in Enugu, Labour Party candidate and Peoples Democratic Party, Chijioke Edeoga and Peter Mbah respectively won eight councils each.

However, Edeoga has rejected the result of the governorship polls as announced by the collation officer from Nkanu East Local Government Area.

Edeoga, who spoke at a press conference Sunday night, asked INEC, to cancel the result in line with its guidelines.

He alleged that there were manipulations of the electoral process, especially over-voting and voter suppression.

The LP candidate said: “In most parts of Enugu State, the election was marred by obvious irregularities, but I want to focus specifically on Nkanu East Local Government Area.

“Nkanu East has produced two different results. The result that my agent signed, which is available, is far different from the result which was taken to INEC headquarters and is now a subject of controversy.

“I want to state categorically that the position of Nkanu East Local Government is that the result of Nkanu East cannot stand; it stands against reason, stands against common sense. It stands against the records available of what is the voting strength of Nkanu East and it stands against the number of voters that were accredited and the number of PVCs that were collected.

“So, the result of Nkanu East is not acceptable; it is not acceptable to the Labour Party and I call for its total cancellation so that the due processes should be followed. At any point in time when the number of PVCs collected and accreditation do not tally with the number of votes, one is enjoined to stay in action and cross-check.

“Of course, you know that Udenu LGA, the electoral officer was whisked away and the results completely altered when she went into the custody of INEC headquarters. What was collated in Udenu, that was going to be announced, is far different from what was announced when she was taken away.

“In virtually all the polling units, what was recorded is far different from what was uploaded. The PVCs collected and the accredited voters have no relationship at all with the votes ascribed to people.

“We are going to respond comprehensively, but I want to state categorically that the Labour Party and its governorship candidate in Enugu State do not accept the result of Nkanu East and we call for its cancellation. It is a flagrant abuse of the electoral process and such brigandage should not be allowed to stay; it is very injurious to every effort we are making to build a democratic system that is representative of the people’s will,” he said.

In Jigawa State, INEC declared the APC candidate, Alhaji Namadi Dammodi, as the winner of the 2023 governorship election in the state.

Announcing the result, the INEC Collation officer in the state, the Vice Chancellor Federal University Birnin Kebbi, Prof. Zayyanu Umar Birnin, Dammodi scored 618,449 to emerge winner and newly elected governor of Jigawa state.

His closest rivals of Peoples of the PDP, Mustapha Sule, scored 368,726 votes and Ibrahim Aminu Ringim of the NNPP who 37,156 votes.

Umar stated, “That Namadi Umar Alhaji of All Progressive Congress having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest votes is hereby declared the winner and returned elected,” he said.

PoliticsBREAKING: Gov Abiodun Re-elected In Ogun by buzmanjohn(op): 6:49pm On Mar 19, 2023
The Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has been reelected for a second term of four years.

Abiodun is the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress.

The Independent National Electoral Commission declared Abiodun as the winner of the governorship election on Sunday.

Meanwhile, before Abiodun was announced as the winner of the poll, PDP collation agent, Sunkanmi Oyejide, cautioned the electoral umpire declaring the winner for the election.

Oyejide said the INEC should consider a clause in the Electoral Act (amended) that orders the commission to declare a rerun in the case of total rejected votes outnumbered the lead margin.

This was raised shortly after the Sagamu collation officer, Prof. Oluwagboyega Afolabi, presented the scores of the political parties in the council.

Afolabi had said that 15 polling units were canceled as a result of violence during the governorship election on Saturday .

The PDP agent however raised an observation against further submission of the copy of the results.

Oyejide said no fewer than 33,750 voters in Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, Ikenne, Ijebu-North and Ogunwaterside asking the commission to look into it.

He added that his party has a petition for the commission.

While raising the objection, Yejide said, “The electoral act 2022, Section 24 Sub-Section three says where an election has commenced and there is reason to believe that there is or has been substantial destruction of election in a polling unit or constituency or it is impossible to continue with the election, occasioned by the threat to peace and security of electoral officials and materials.

“Electoral officials and materials should be underlined in the case of Remo where BVAS did not function and I argued it out. The commission shall suspend the election and appoint another date for the continuation of the election or the process.

“Secondly, if we invoke the principle of lead of margin enshrine in the electoral act 2022, the rejected votes according to results submitted to local government by local government are far higher than the lead of margin.

“This just to inform you when you are through with your final collation and what happened is found to be true that you will know that the election shall be inconclusive and a rerun should be ordered where necessary.”

The petition, a copy obtained by our correspondent, titled “petition against deliberate disenfranchisement of a large number of voters in some local governments of Ogun state” dated March 18, 2023, was addressed to INEC National Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu.

The petition reads “We write to remind your authority of the above-mentioned issue.

“You will recall that the Commission is aware of the level of thuggery planned and orchestrated by the All Progressive Congress to unleash mayhem in some polling units across the state to destabilise innocent voters from freely exercising their voting rights as a result of planned and well-executed action.

“We are aware that the principle of margin of lead as established by the Commission in Section 24(3) is in effect, affected by the inability of the population greater than the reflected lead between the assumed winner of the election and the runner-up. Therefore, a re-run in appropriate to address this injustice.

“We, therefore, implore the Commission to evoke this principle and declare this election inconclusive.”

Reacting to the protest, the returning officer, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, said the complaints have already been locoed into.

Adebowale said, “I have tried to check our records and I want to say that everything he said is at variance with what we have as records.

“But, if it is found to be incorrect. INEC has seven days to review its decision.”

PoliticsCDD Raises Concerns Over Credibility Of Governorship Polls by buzmanjohn(op): 9:28pm On Mar 18, 2023
The Centre for Democracy and Development has raised doubts over the credibility of Saturday’s governorship and state House of Assembly elections following alleged cases of sale of votes, violence and intimidation of voters.

While the group commended improvements in the conduct of the elections, especially in the area of logistical deployment leading to prompter arrival of INEC officials, the group noted that there were still occasional issues of non-functionality of the Bi-modal Voter Accreditation System machines.

The CDD made the observations in its preliminary statement on the governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections in Abuja, on Saturday.

Briefing journalists, the Executive Director of the group, Idayat Hassan, said data from its 1,500 observers deployed across the country showed there were more cases of vote-buying during the governorship election compared to the presidential poll of February 25, across the six geopolitical zones.

“In the North-West, observers in all seven states reported increased reports of vote trading, primarily by political party agents. Money was used alongside other materials such as food items, wrappers and a ‘credit voucher’ were used to buy votes and those items were to be redeemed after the results were declared.

Similarly in the North-East, political party agents in Taraba State were observed to have infiltrated the queues, pretended to be voters and used the chance to offer cash for votes. In the South-East, there were reports of APGA and LP party agents using materials, phones and other souvenirs to entice voters in Anambra State.

In the South-South, multiple states reported a desire for voters to show proof of their ballot before being paid, with party agents reportedly compiling a list of their voters in Esan Central LGA, Edo State.

This might be a reflection of the heightened political environment around the governorship polls, the importance of local personalities in state-level politics, and the shortages of fuel and naira.”

Mrs. Hassan also expressed concern over cases of insecurity and reduced presence of security officials during the elections, compared to the February 25 Presidential and National Assembly elections.

“A concern that has cut across multiple zones is the reduced presence of security officials. Observers across the states in the South-South, South-West and North-West reported a much smaller security presence, especially when compared to the presidential election.

“This has led to repeated skirmishes and fights between voters, party agents and officials. For example, observers in Enugu reported clashes between the party representatives, while others in Jigawa highlighted similar issues between self-professed party members.

There were reports in Ukanafun LGA, Akwa Ibom, where thugs attacked a polling unit and scared away voters. Election materials were also hijacked at gunpoint in Emelia LGA and thugs also disrupted the process in Obio Akpor LGA, both in Rivers State.”

Speaking also, the Chairman of the CDD’s Election Analysis Centre, Prof. Adele Jinadu, said the turnout of voters for the polls varied from state to state based on anecdotal evidence.

He explained that in states where the incumbent was significantly challenged by his opponent, there were relatively higher turnout of voters.

Jinadu said the CDD observation data indicated that in the South-South, the general sense of discouragement across the region due to the unfavourable outcome of the presidential election, affected turnout, with voters declaring ‘there is no point’ of coming out to vote.

He also disclosed that the observer data showed that across the South-West zone, INEC officials arrived on time and promptly commenced the process in over 80% of observed polling units.

He said the trend was consistent across the six geopolitical zones. In Anambra State, 75% of polling units had INEC officials who arrived on time with voting commencing on average at 8:41am.

“There was even a report of INEC officials in Benue State having slept over at the polling unit to avoid late coming,” he added.

PoliticsGov Election 2023: Hoodlums Attack Polling Units In Lekki by buzmanjohn(op): 12:56pm On Mar 18, 2023
Some polling units in the Ajiran area of Agungi, Lekki, Eti-Osa Local Government Area in Lagos State were on Saturday morning attacked by hoodlums, who snatched ballot boxes.

Our correspondent observed that the hoodlums attacked PU 108, PU 007, PU 028 and others in the area.

Our correspondent further observed that following the attack, voter turnout in the area dropped rapidly as many people went back to their homes for fear of being attacked.

A resident of the area, who was attacked and flogged by the hoodlums with blood dripping down his head said he was intimidated while trying to cast his vote.

Speaking to our correspondent on condition of anonymity for fear of harassment, he said, “I was trying to cast my vote when the thugs invaded my polling unit. They said I can’t vote if I’m not voting for the APC [All Progressives Congress]. They started flogging me and beating me.”

It was gathered that the hoodlums were made up of both male and female members and they were about 20 in number that invaded the area.

Another resident, identified as Bayo, said, “The violence broke out between 9am and 10 am. The number of voters that came out during the presidential election in our area has dropped significantly. We are still calling our people around to come out and vote as the military has arrived and things have settled now.”

It was gathered that the chairman of one of the estates in the area was slapped by the hoodlums when he tried to reason with them and urge them to stop harassing and intimidating the voters.

As of the time of filing this report, three military vans with armed soldiers have arrived in the area and peace has been restored.

CrimePoliceman Shot Dead During S3x Romp With Lover In Bush by buzmanjohn(op): 7:02pm On Mar 17, 2023
A policeman, Judas Chiloane, has been shot dead during sexual intercourse with his lover in a bush in Mpumalanga, South Africa.

A local news platform, TimesLive, reported that the 60-year-old policeman who doubles as a traffic chief in Bushbuckridge was allegedly shot in the back seat of his Ford Ranger bakkie twice while his lover was unharmed.

Two suspects, Charles Mbungeni Mabuza and Howard Mashego were arrested on Monday, March 13, in connection with the murder, and arraigned in court on Wednesday, March 15.

Commenting on the incident on Thursday, March 16, the Hawks spokesperson, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, said, “The two men told us that they would normally go to the spot near Graskop Road [where Chiloane was shot dead] to rob couples who use the area to engage in jola-joling [s3x] in their cars.”

They reportedly snatched away his gun before firing shots at his thigh and upper body. The lady sought help, and when the police came, they declared their colleague dead at the scene.

A source told TimesLIVE that Chiloane was found with no clothes, and his uniform was on the ground.

He said, “They shot him in the leg. He tried [to] escape to the driver’s side, and he was shot again … The officer tried to speed off for about 124m but succumbed due to injuries sustained. It seemed like the suspect took his firearm and other items and [fled].”

Judas Chiloane’s brother, Richard, told reporters that they don’t know this side chick he was with when he was murdered.

He said, “We do not know that lady, I haven’t even seen her. What we know is that my brother was a good man who loved his family and was also a member of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC). He did not drink or was involved in anything wrong.”

Richard admitted that the father of three might have had lovers on the side, but the family only knew his live-in girlfriend.

PoliticsUPDATED: Court Remands Ex-Imo Deputy Gov In Prison by buzmanjohn(op): 5:41pm On Mar 09, 2023
A Magistrates’ court in Owerri, Imo State, on Thursday, remanded the immediate past deputy governor of the state, Gerald Irona, in prison custody.

The presiding magistrate, C. N Ezerioha, after hearing the prosecution counsel and defence counsel, ordered that Irona be remanded in Owerri correctional centre.

She further said that the court does not have the jurisdiction to hear the matter.

Counsel for the ex-deputy governor, S. I Imo had immediately after he was arraigned moved a motion that Irona be granted bail on self-recognition.

Imo said that if the ex-deputy governor could not be granted bail on self-recognition, a state lawmaker, Frank Ugboma, representing Oguta State constituency was willing to take him on bail.

But the lead prosecutor, Sunday Ogbuji, opposed the bail application, saying that the Magistrate lacked jurisdiction to hear the matter.

Apart from that, the lead prosecutor said one of the charges preferred on the Irona bothered on felony.

Ogbuji said only a judge of a high court could grant Irona bail.

After hearing both parties, the magistrate ordered that the ex-deputy governor be reminded in prison.

In her ruling, the magistrate agreed with the prosecution counsel that she lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the matter or grant the accused bail.

The judge while ordering that Irona be remanded in Owerri Correctional centre, said that the prosecution counsel should make all documents available to the defence counsel to enable them take the next legal action.

She also ordered that the case file be transferred to the Department of Public Prosecution.

The three-count read “that you Hon Gerald Irona sometime in January 2020, at Owerri in the Owerri magistrate district, did conspire with others now at large, to commit felony to wit: treason and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 37(2) of the criminal code, cap c 38, law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Imo state.

“That you Hon Gerald Irona sometime in January 2020, at Owerri in the Owerri magistrate district, did make several utterances to the effect that you will make Imo state ungovernable and immediately afterwards hoodlums levied several attacks on Imo State with intent to intimidate or overawe the governor of Imo State and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 37 of the criminal code, cap, c 38, law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Imo state.

“That you Hon Gerald Irona on the 15th day of January, 2020, at Owerri in the Owerri magistrate district, do convert to your own use two Land Cruiser jeeps ( V8 and V6) and one Toyota Hilux vehicle valued four hundred and Ninety-three million naira property of Imo state government thereby committed an offence punishable under section 390 ( 9) of the criminal code, cap c 38, laws of the federal Republic of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Imo state.”

Briefing journalists after the court rose, one of the defence counsels, Kissinger Ikeokwu, expressed optimism that the ex-deputy governor would be granted bail at the high court.

Ikeokwu, who is the Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party, said Irona’s ordeal was politically motivated.

The police had on Wednesday arrested Irona at his Owerri residence, a development the state chapter of the PDP described as a plot to assassinate the immediate past deputy governor.

Irona was the deputy governor of the state between May 29, 2019, and January 14, 2020, when the supreme court ordered that Emeka Ihedioha be removed as the governor of the state and Uzodinma be sworn in as the duly elected governor of the state.

PoliticsWhy I Won’t Challenge Tinubu’s Victory – SDP Candidate by buzmanjohn(op): 9:22am On Mar 04, 2023
The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Adewole Adebayo, on Friday explained why he did not challenge the outcome of the just concluded presidential election in court.

The Peoples Democratic Party and Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and his Labour Party counterpart, Peter Obi, on Thursday in separate world press conferences revealed their intention to challenge INEC’s declaration of the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as the winner of the February 25.

But Adebayo who spoke during a programme on ARISE TV said though he had evidence of being robbed at the poll, he didn’t win the election.

He also said he congratulated Tinubu and accepted him as the President-elect in obedience to the Constitution.

“My position is that Bola Ahmed Tinubu wrongly or rightly has been declared the President-elect, we who ran, who have followers, my followers are angry with me that I did that but that is leadership because the duty is to stabilise the situation and then the law will take its cause.”

Meanwhile, the presidential candidate of the National Rescue Movement, Amb. Isaac Udeh, has called on the aggrieved candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party and other political parties to concede defeat for the progress of Nigeria.

Speaking in an interview with Saturday PUNCH, Udeh said, “Nigeria is number one in our priority; we believe that no election is 100 per cent free and fair. One thing is that this election has produced one thing that we never experienced before in previous elections.”

PoliticsEmulate Jonathan, Accept Defeat, APC Tells Atiku, Obi by buzmanjohn(op): 7:37am On Mar 01, 2023
The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council has called on the presidential candidates of Labour Party, Peter Obi, and his counterpart for the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, to accept defeat by calling to congratulate the APC flag bearer, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

The APC PCC Special Adviser on Media and Strategic Communications, Dele Alake, made the call at a press conference in Abuja to address the calls for the Independent National Electoral Commission results to cancel the election.

The development is coming in the wake of the demand by the PDP, LP and the African Democratic Congress for INEC National Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, to step aside.

The three parties had in a joint press conference on Tuesday alleged that the February 2023 presidential and National Assembly elections were marred with violence, rigging and intimidation of voters.

In the same vein, the PDP vice presidential candidate, Ifeanyi Okowa, had asked Yakubu to cancel the results of Saturday’s elections.

Okowa claimed that there was no transparency in the process because the results were not transmitted electronically from polling units.

But the APC PCC rejected the call and rather urged Atiku and Obi to borrow a leaf from former President Goodluck Jonathan, who, in 2015, called to congratulate the APC candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, even before INEC finished announcing the results of the election.

He said, “We call on Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, to emulate former President Goodluck Jonathan by conceding defeat. This election has already been won by our candidate, according to the results declared at the collation centres in the state. In 2015, President Jonathan did not wait for INEC to finish collation before he called President Muhammadu Buhari and congratulated him in the true spirit of democracy and sportsmanship.

“We urge Atiku Abubakar and Obi to follow the same path of honour, instead of attempting to heat the polity via the reckless statements by surrogates. Let Atiku and Obi call Tinubu now.”

Alake, an ex-Lagos commissioner, took a swipe at former President Olusegun Obasanjo for literally calling for the cancellation of last Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections.

According to him, Obasanjo’s demand was anchored on unsubstantiated claims, rumours and allegations of fraud by the opposition parties after observing that they have lost the election.

While saying he was disappointed in the elder statesman’s statement, the PCC Special Adviser on Media noted that even Obasanjo himself once admitted in an interview that there is no ‘perfect’ electoral system anywhere in the world.

“The APC-PCC wants to say emphatically that former President Obasanjo has no moral right to meddle in this election, let alone calling for its cancellation because he is an interested party having publicly, on January 1, this year, endorsed the candidate of Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi,” Alake said.

PoliticsSeek Legal Redress, INEC Advises Aggrieved Parties by buzmanjohn(op): 4:25pm On Feb 28, 2023
The Independent National Electoral Commission has advised aggrieved political parties to seek legal redress if not satisfied with the electoral process, adding that calls for the resignation of INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, by the parties is out of place.

It would be recalled that the national collation agents for the Peoples Democratic Party, Dino Melaye and Emeka Ihedioha on Monday walked out of the International Conference Centre in Abuja over alleged rigging.

Agents of some other parties, including those of the Social Democratic Party, Labour Party and Action Democratic Party had pointed out same views.

They had accused INEC of violating the Electoral Act by going ahead with the result collation and announcement despite not uploading the results on the INEC Result Viewing portal.

Addressing the matter on Tuesday, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, said that “results emanating from the states point to a free, fair and credible process.”

He however urged parties to allow the conclusion of the electoral process and if not satisfied, they could approach the court.

He noted, “The call by the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Democratic Party on the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu to resign is misplaced. The allegation by Dino Melaye that the INEC chairman allocated scores to parties is unfounded and irresponsible.

“At the same time, contrary to the insinuation by both parties, results emanating from the states point to a free, fair and credible process.

“There are laid down procedures for aggrieved parties or candidates to follow when they are dissatisfied about the outcome of an election. Such procedures do not include calling on the INEC chairman to resign or for the election to be cancelled.

“To be sure, aggrieved parties are free to approach the courts to ventilate their concerns and wait for the matter to be resolved. Making inciting comments capable of causing violence or unrest is unacceptable.

“The 2023 general election processes are in their final stages of completion. It is only fair for aggrieved parties to allow the conclusion of the process and approach the courts with their evidences to pursue their cases.”

The collation officer appointed by the Independent National Electoral Commission for the Presidential election in Rivers State, Prof Charles Adias, has suspended the collation of results over alleged threats to life.

Prof Adias who is also the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Otuoke in Bayelsa State, said this at the resumption of collation at the INEC headquarters in Port Harcourt on Tuesday morning, saying the threats were from supporters of a particular political party.

He stated, “I have been receiving threats, messages and calls to my life and that of my family for two days now. My picture is all over the social media that I was sent to rig the elections in Rivers State.

“Every one hour, I receive more that one million calls of threats to my life and other things. I hereby stand down collation until the INEC and security agencies can guarantee my safety to continue this national assignment.”
