As declared by the local government Collation officers of INEC in the governorship election in Enugu, Labour Party candidate and Peoples Democratic Party, Chijioke Edeoga and Peter Mbah respectively won eight councils each. However, Edeoga has rejected the result of the governorship polls as announced by the collation officer from Nkanu East Local Government Area. Edeoga, who spoke at a press conference Sunday night, asked INEC, to cancel the result in line with its guidelines. He alleged that there were manipulations of the electoral process, especially over-voting and voter suppression. The LP candidate said: “In most parts of Enugu State, the election was marred by obvious irregularities, but I want to focus specifically on Nkanu East Local Government Area. “Nkanu East has produced two different results. The result that my agent signed, which is available, is far different from the result which was taken to INEC headquarters and is now a subject of controversy. “I want to state categorically that the position of Nkanu East Local Government is that the result of Nkanu East cannot stand; it stands against reason, stands against common sense. It stands against the records available of what is the voting strength of Nkanu East and it stands against the number of voters that were accredited and the number of PVCs that were collected. “So, the result of Nkanu East is not acceptable; it is not acceptable to the Labour Party and I call for its total cancellation so that the due processes should be followed. At any point in time when the number of PVCs collected and accreditation do not tally with the number of votes, one is enjoined to stay in action and cross-check. “Of course, you know that Udenu LGA, the electoral officer was whisked away and the results completely altered when she went into the custody of INEC headquarters. What was collated in Udenu, that was going to be announced, is far different from what was announced when she was taken away. “In virtually all the polling units, what was recorded is far different from what was uploaded. The PVCs collected and the accredited voters have no relationship at all with the votes ascribed to people. “We are going to respond comprehensively, but I want to state categorically that the Labour Party and its governorship candidate in Enugu State do not accept the result of Nkanu East and we call for its cancellation. It is a flagrant abuse of the electoral process and such brigandage should not be allowed to stay; it is very injurious to every effort we are making to build a democratic system that is representative of the people’s will,” he said. In Jigawa State, INEC declared the APC candidate, Alhaji Namadi Dammodi, as the winner of the 2023 governorship election in the state. The Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has been reelected for a second term of four years. Abiodun is the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress. The Independent National Electoral Commission declared Abiodun as the winner of the governorship election on Sunday. Meanwhile, before Abiodun was announced as the winner of the poll, PDP collation agent, Sunkanmi Oyejide, cautioned the electoral umpire declaring the winner for the election. Oyejide said the INEC should consider a clause in the Electoral Act (amended) that orders the commission to declare a rerun in the case of total rejected votes outnumbered the lead margin. This was raised shortly after the Sagamu collation officer, Prof. Oluwagboyega Afolabi, presented the scores of the political parties in the council. Afolabi had said that 15 polling units were canceled as a result of violence during the governorship election on Saturday . The PDP agent however raised an observation against further submission of the copy of the results. Oyejide said no fewer than 33,750 voters in Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, Ikenne, Ijebu-North and Ogunwaterside asking the commission to look into it. He added that his party has a petition for the commission. While raising the objection, Yejide said, “The electoral act 2022, Section 24 Sub-Section three says where an election has commenced and there is reason to believe that there is or has been substantial destruction of election in a polling unit or constituency or it is impossible to continue with the election, occasioned by the threat to peace and security of electoral officials and materials. “Electoral officials and materials should be underlined in the case of Remo where BVAS did not function and I argued it out. The commission shall suspend the election and appoint another date for the continuation of the election or the process. “Secondly, if we invoke the principle of lead of margin enshrine in the electoral act 2022, the rejected votes according to results submitted to local government by local government are far higher than the lead of margin. “This just to inform you when you are through with your final collation and what happened is found to be true that you will know that the election shall be inconclusive and a rerun should be ordered where necessary.” The petition, a copy obtained by our correspondent, titled “petition against deliberate disenfranchisement of a large number of voters in some local governments of Ogun state” dated March 18, 2023, was addressed to INEC National Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu. The petition reads “We write to remind your authority of the above-mentioned issue. “You will recall that the Commission is aware of the level of thuggery planned and orchestrated by the All Progressive Congress to unleash mayhem in some polling units across the state to destabilise innocent voters from freely exercising their voting rights as a result of planned and well-executed action. “We are aware that the principle of margin of lead as established by the Commission in Section 24(3) is in effect, affected by the inability of the population greater than the reflected lead between the assumed winner of the election and the runner-up. Therefore, a re-run in appropriate to address this injustice. “We, therefore, implore the Commission to evoke this principle and declare this election inconclusive.” Reacting to the protest, the returning officer, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, said the complaints have already been locoed into. Adebowale said, “I have tried to check our records and I want to say that everything he said is at variance with what we have as records. “But, if it is found to be incorrect. INEC has seven days to review its decision.” https://punchng.com/breaking-gov-abiodun-re-elected-in-ogun/

A Magistrates’ court in Owerri, Imo State, on Thursday, remanded the immediate past deputy governor of the state, Gerald Irona, in prison custody. The presiding magistrate, C. N Ezerioha, after hearing the prosecution counsel and defence counsel, ordered that Irona be remanded in Owerri correctional centre. She further said that the court does not have the jurisdiction to hear the matter. Counsel for the ex-deputy governor, S. I Imo had immediately after he was arraigned moved a motion that Irona be granted bail on self-recognition. Imo said that if the ex-deputy governor could not be granted bail on self-recognition, a state lawmaker, Frank Ugboma, representing Oguta State constituency was willing to take him on bail. But the lead prosecutor, Sunday Ogbuji, opposed the bail application, saying that the Magistrate lacked jurisdiction to hear the matter. Apart from that, the lead prosecutor said one of the charges preferred on the Irona bothered on felony. Ogbuji said only a judge of a high court could grant Irona bail. After hearing both parties, the magistrate ordered that the ex-deputy governor be reminded in prison. In her ruling, the magistrate agreed with the prosecution counsel that she lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the matter or grant the accused bail. The judge while ordering that Irona be remanded in Owerri Correctional centre, said that the prosecution counsel should make all documents available to the defence counsel to enable them take the next legal action. She also ordered that the case file be transferred to the Department of Public Prosecution. The three-count read “that you Hon Gerald Irona sometime in January 2020, at Owerri in the Owerri magistrate district, did conspire with others now at large, to commit felony to wit: treason and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 37(2) of the criminal code, cap c 38, law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Imo state. “That you Hon Gerald Irona sometime in January 2020, at Owerri in the Owerri magistrate district, did make several utterances to the effect that you will make Imo state ungovernable and immediately afterwards hoodlums levied several attacks on Imo State with intent to intimidate or overawe the governor of Imo State and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 37 of the criminal code, cap, c 38, law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Imo state. “That you Hon Gerald Irona on the 15th day of January, 2020, at Owerri in the Owerri magistrate district, do convert to your own use two Land Cruiser jeeps ( V8 and V6) and one Toyota Hilux vehicle valued four hundred and Ninety-three million naira property of Imo state government thereby committed an offence punishable under section 390 ( 9) of the criminal code, cap c 38, laws of the federal Republic of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Imo state.” Briefing journalists after the court rose, one of the defence counsels, Kissinger Ikeokwu, expressed optimism that the ex-deputy governor would be granted bail at the high court. Ikeokwu, who is the Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party, said Irona’s ordeal was politically motivated. The police had on Wednesday arrested Irona at his Owerri residence, a development the state chapter of the PDP described as a plot to assassinate the immediate past deputy governor. Irona was the deputy governor of the state between May 29, 2019, and January 14, 2020, when the supreme court ordered that Emeka Ihedioha be removed as the governor of the state and Uzodinma be sworn in as the duly elected governor of the state. https://punchng.com/breaking-court-remands-ex-imo-deputy-gov-in-prison/

The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Adewole Adebayo, on Friday explained why he did not challenge the outcome of the just concluded presidential election in court. The Peoples Democratic Party and Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and his Labour Party counterpart, Peter Obi, on Thursday in separate world press conferences revealed their intention to challenge INEC’s declaration of the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as the winner of the February 25. But Adebayo who spoke during a programme on ARISE TV said though he had evidence of being robbed at the poll, he didn’t win the election. He also said he congratulated Tinubu and accepted him as the President-elect in obedience to the Constitution. “My position is that Bola Ahmed Tinubu wrongly or rightly has been declared the President-elect, we who ran, who have followers, my followers are angry with me that I did that but that is leadership because the duty is to stabilise the situation and then the law will take its cause.” Meanwhile, the presidential candidate of the National Rescue Movement, Amb. Isaac Udeh, has called on the aggrieved candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party and other political parties to concede defeat for the progress of Nigeria. Speaking in an interview with Saturday PUNCH, Udeh said, “Nigeria is number one in our priority; we believe that no election is 100 per cent free and fair. One thing is that this election has produced one thing that we never experienced before in previous elections.” https://punchng.com/why-i-wont-challenge-tinubus-victory-sdp-candidate/
