The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has reacted to claims that he consults with demons anytime he is about to minister at the Redemption Camp. The cleric, popularly called Daddy GO, said his attention was drawn to some publications where the allegations were made by some clerics and groups of persons. Speaking on the claims on Friday night at the ongoing Annual Convention 2023, Adeboye urged the congregation to pray for his death if he ever did such. While saying he would not mind people spreading such rumours, he said it occurred to him that even some of his members might have believed the rumours. In a bid to clear people’s doubt, the clergyman said, “I want you to say this prayer, ‘If Pastor Adeboye has any links with any demonic powers, let him die before the sun rises. “But if he is using your power, multiply the powers by seven folds.” he added. https://punchng.com/pray-for-my-death-if-i-consult-with-demons-adeboye/?amp

Relatives of a 30-year-old woman, Rafiat Okewole, are currently grieving over the sudden death of the lady allegedly in the hands of her husband, Wole. PUNCH Metro gathered that Okewole, though married to the businessman, was living separately on Odelusi Street, in the Ijoko area of Ota, Ogun State. She was said to have lost her life during a disagreement that ensued when she visited her husband in the Gas Line area of Ijoko on Sunday to collect money for her children’s upkeep. The deceased was said to have been having a running battle with her husband over his alleged failure to cater for her children. The issue, however, reached its climax when Wole allegedly smashed Okewole’s head against the wall during her Sunday visit. Our correspondent learnt that efforts made by neighbours to save Okewole’s life after the incident failed as she was confirmed dead in the hospital where she was rushed to for medical attention. It was further learnt that her 41-year-old husband was arrested after the case was reported at a police station by one of the deceased’s siblings. One of the deceased’s brothers, Akinola Shittu, in an interview with PUNCH Metro, said he was devastated by the news of his sister’s death. He said, “My elder brother called me on Sunday evening to inform me that Rafiat died. I asked what happened and he told me that it was reported to him that Wole smashed her head against the wall of his house when she went to ask for money for the upkeep of their kids. “This happened at Wole’s Gas Line, Ijoko residence on Sunday around 3pm. “Immediately, I rushed to the house and I saw that neighbours had already gathered and my sister was taken to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead. I am devastated. “I later learnt that one of my brothers who lives nearby reported the case at Sango Police Station which led to Wole’s arrest.” The deceased’s sister, Basirat Liasu, told our correspondent that the incident happened in the presence of Okewole’s daughter who accompanied her to Wole’s house. Liasu said, “I learnt on Sunday from one of our elder sisters that Rafiat died due to injuries inflicted on her by her husband, Wole, who hit her head against the wall in his house. “Rafiat was not living with Wole as of the time of the incident because she was Wole’s second wife. Though, his first wife also packed out earlier in the year. “She went there to ask for money for the children’s upkeep. One of her children who accompanied her to the house told neighbours that her father hit her mother’s head on the wall.” The deceased’s elder brother, Yusuf, told PUNCH Metro that he was the one who reported the matter at the Sango Divisional Police Headquarters. He said, “My wife was the one that called me on the telephone and informed me that she heard that my sister died after her husband hit her head against the wall of his house. “I rushed to the hospital at Ijoko but she was already dead and I learnt that Wole was still boasting that nothing would happen to him after killing my sister.” Contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident. She said Wole was already in police custody. The PPRO said, “The Sango Ota Police Division arrested a murder suspect on August 6, 2023, around 4pm. It was one Segun Osho who reported that his sister, Rafiat Okewole, who lived at Odelusi Street, Ijoko, Ota had an argument with her husband, Oluwole Okewole, and he hit her head on the wall and she became unconscious. “She was rushed to a hospital in Ota where she was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty. “Detectives visited the scene, arrested the suspect for interrogation and took photographs while the corpse was evacuated to the mortuary for autopsy.” https://punchng.com/businessman-hits-wifes-head-against-wall-victim-dies/?amp

The Lagos State Police Command has nabbed a female trader, Taye Abass, who allegedly trafficked a hard drug known as Colorado, through her niece (name withheld) to evade police checks. The woman who lives in the Oko Oba area of Lagos confessed to the offence while being paraded by the police at the state headquarters in Ikeja, Lagos on Tuesday. Abass said she always used the girl to transport the drugs from their house to her shop to avoid being checked, as no one would suspect a small girl. Abass said, “When I went to Ilorin, my mother asked me to bring her with me to Lagos about two months ago. I sell drinks. When she got to my place, feeding was hard. Where I usually take my drinks for sale, somebody then introduced me to Colorado that I should be selling it. He told me the police always arrested people selling it. So whenever I am taking the drinks for sale, I usually put it (the drug) in her underwear, and ask her to put it in the shop where I always collect it back from her.” The woman who pleaded for leniency, begged for forgiveness saying it was because of hardship, adding that other accomplices had run away. Speaking, the underage girl said she was brought to the police station and when she wanted to bathe, the drug was found on her body. “I told them it is my sister’s mum that put it on me. She started putting it on me when I came to her place. “She used to sell it but I don’t know those that do come to buy it. She tells me she puts it on my body because the police can not search me,” the girl said. Addressing the press, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the suspect was arrested through the collaborative efforts of the public and the police. Hundeyin said, “This shows the success the collaboration with the public is yielding. The girl was found roaming the street and a good neighbor brought her to the station so she was taken to the station where she complained that she was being maltreated at home, and she ran away while running an errand. While she was being made to have her bath and change her clothes, it was discovered that the drug was hidden in her panties and that prompted further questions.” “We extended the investigation to her home and we were able to bring her guardian to the station at the Pen Cinema Division. She did not deny it; she admitted that had been her way to courier the drugs from her home to her shops “The girl will be handed over to her family and the suspect will be prosecuted accordingly,” the PPRO stated. https://punchng.com/why-i-used-10-year-old-niece-as-drug-courier-lagos-trader/?amp

The family of the late former governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, have said they have no single piece of land on Banana Island despite that the island was developed under the Jakande administration. Jakande’s son, Seyi, while speaking on Monday during the maiden edition of Lateef Jakande Annual Memorial Lecture held at Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, delved into the family life of his late father, saying Jakande made no special allocation to his family as governor. The lecture, with the theme “Lateef Jakande: The Man, His Journalism, His Politics,” was organised by the Nigerian Guild of Editors under the leadership of its President, Eze Anaba. Jakande, a former journalist and first President of the NGE, also served as the governor of Lagos State from 1979 to 1983, and later Minister of Works under the Sani Abacha military regime. Saying his father was selfless while developing Lagos, Seyi said, “People say does he (Jakande) even have a wife? Does he even have children? I had to tell my sister, ‘Won’t we go for DNA?’ “In the years that Alhaji Jakande served as governor of Lagos, with all that he did, he did not allocate or give anything to either his wife or son. She (his wife) stayed with Jakande at the Ilupeju residence. At a time, I asked my dad, from inception as governor, you said there was no money in Lagos, and you built schools and houses.” He said Jakande while serving as a minister, conceived the idea of developing what is called the Banana Island today. “He (Jakande) went back to his thinking box and said what are we going to do? They came up with the idea of the Banana Island. As Minister for Works, they took advantage of the waterways and filled them up, sold them to the rich, generated money and subsidised the housing scheme. “Again, Baba did not even have sand on Banana Island. This was just water. He started Banana Island, created it, and filled it up, and not even (a portion) of sand (was allocated) to his beloved wife or any member of his family.” At the event, Seyi also urged the state government to rename the Lagos State University at Ojoo after Jakande, saying the institution was the brainchild of his father. “I want Governor Sanwo-Olu to revisit the discussion (of renaming LASU after Jakande),” he added. Present at the event were Jakande’s wife and daughter, Sikirat Jakande and Dr Adeboye. The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, who represented Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the event, said Jakande’s life was a reflection of humanity with several testimonies of positive impacts. Also present was Gen. Ike Nwachukwu (retd.); former governor of Ogun State, Olusegun Osoba, while Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun was represented by a former Commissioner in Ondo State and a consultant, Kayode Akinmade. The former spokesperson for ex-President Muhammdu Buhari, Garba Shehu, was also present among many other media industry players. https://punchng.com/jakande-conceived-banana-island-allocated-no-plot-to-self-son/?amp

I am not aware of any plot or any scheme to impeach the Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu. I have also checked and there was no such plan. “So, the court action taken, for me, is a thing of shock and disappointment. I am trying to reflect on the move made by somebody that I have given a broad latitude to do his work as deputy governor. So, for him to take this kind of action is shocking.” Obaseki said Shaibu never discussed his governorship ambition with him. “The last time we spoke of my successor after the House of Assembly election, I did say that we should be patient and that our task is to try and finish well and conclude all our projects we started. It’s only when we do this right that we will have the support of the people for my successor. “I believe that this action by him is a preemptive move to get a court order, keep his ticket and move to another party. I think it’s unfair for our party. We don’t need this sort of crisis. I have been getting calls all over the world and it’s rather sad that somebody who is part of an administration will do this to the administration because of his personal ambition.” Obaseki said he was not angry “but naturally I should be disappointed.” Meanwhile, at the state Assenbly on Monday no mention was made of the alleged impeachment move against Shaibu. The lawmakers adjourned the plenary till next Monday, August 14. But an Edo North group, led by a former Speaker of the House of Assembly, Kabiru Adjoto, addressed journalists on Monday, accusing Shaibu of embarrassing the people of the zone. Adjoto said the group could not keep quiet on the current political happenings in the state expressing disbelief over the imbroglio. He said, “We have watched in utter disbelief the self-contrived rift between our governor, Godwin Obaseki, and our son, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Rt Hon Comrade Philip Shaibu. Afemai people are a very hard-working, patriotic and loyal race. “We recall that our two distinguished sons, who are former deputy governors, Reverend Peter Obadan and Mike Oghiadomhe, cooperated with their bosses and demonstrated the loyalty that the Afemai race is known for. “We are surprised and embarrassed by the behaviour of Deputy Governor Shaibu in his ill-advised mission to govern the state by all means. “Mr Godwin Obaseki has been magnanimous more than any governor in Nigeria, and has saddled our son, the Deputy Governor with the highest number of responsibilities, ranging from sports, internal revenue, boundary committee, immunisation, to mention but a few, which has earned him a name ‘the busiest Deputy Governor in Nigeria’. “The court action is not only speculative but baseless and highly embarrassing. We are coming out today to disassociate the Afemai people from this ill-conceived action, and to also apologise to the governor of the state for this unfortunate incident.” When contacted for reaction, the Chief Press Secretary to the deputy governor, Musa Ebomhiana, said he was on medical leave and could not comment on the matter. https://punchng.com/obaseki-dismisses-impeachment-plot-says-shaibu-planning-apc-defection/?amp

The Chairman, Medical Guild, Dr Sa’eid Ahmad, has said findings of the investigative panel on the cause of death of Dr Diaso Vwaere revealed that the installation of the malfunctioned elevator that led to her death was done by a contractor who did not have an elevator system installation certification. Ahmad, who made the revelation during a news conference on Friday to give an update on the probe into the circumstances that led to Vwaere’s death, said the elevator failed to work during its unveiling in June 2021. He, however, noted that the contractor attributed the elevator’s failure to work to inadequate power supply from the generator hired for the event. “Regular maintenance was supposed to be done every four weeks on the elevator for optimum performance,” he was quoted to have said by the News Agency of Nigeria. Ahmad said the contractor, installers, and other persons involved in the installation should be arrested and if found culpable be made to face the law. He also noted that a series of infrastructural challenges had trailed the house officers’ quarters of the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos, since rehabilitation in 2015 to 2016 while appealing to the state government to install a new elevator in the building through a certified installer and also ensure regular maintenance. Noting that Vwaere should be immortalised to preserve her memory and her family support, Ahmad said the Guild would follow up on the investigation to ensure justice is served. The PUNCH had reported that Vwaere, a medical house officer, died due to the injuries she sustained when the elevator she was in crashed in the staff quarters of the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos. Angered by the tragic development, Vwaere’s colleagues staged a peaceful protest at the hospital. The Nigerian Medical Association directed doctors in the three government hospitals on Lagos Island to embark on an indefinite strike over her death. https://punchng.com/uncertified-contractor-installed-elevator-that-killed-lagos-doctor-medical-guild/?amp

Some parents and educators have taken to the Facebook page of the Concerned Parents Educators forum to complain about the examination malpractice they witnessed during the National Common Entrance Examination. The comments made references to the unethical conduct of the invigilators who were seen calling out answers to the children during the exam which took place on July 22. The first anonymous post which generated over 500 comments read, “I’m pained in my body, soul, and spirit. I just got not-so-encouraging feedback from a parent in my school whose child was one of those who wrote the Lagos State Common Entrance Examination on Saturday. “One of the invigilators called out answers to kids in the examination hall. Answers were not just called but our pupils were harassed and intimidated for not taking the answers. They were rushed, saying, “Why didn’t you write the answers when others were writing?” “Please why should this be? These are primary school kids for crying out loud. “These are kids we have worked so hard to be educated academically and morally, why teach and encourage them to cheat? Why? What kind of evil are those in positions of authority sowing in the lives of these kids? It’s really sad, I just don’t understand this society. We keep promoting and encouraging bad characters and expect magic. When will all this stop in Nigeria? I’m just so pissed. I know the efforts we put into getting these kids to prepare, I know how hard they worked. May that invigilator meet his Waterloo.” Another netizen, Omolayo Afolabi, added, “Same story every year so not even CPE can do anything about it, and some of the teachers involved as invigilators are on this platform, all because of peanut they want to ruin some of the intentional parents and teachers effort, the real change begins with me and you.” Dammy Dorcas said, “It is happening in every state. I was so mad last year, come and see the way proprietors both in public and private schools were running around to solve the questions for the kids. At a point, they asked for my own money and the way I looked at them, they just left me. I told them not to tell my pupils anything and gave a strict warning to my pupils not to shade anything given to them.” However, Public Affairs Officer, Lagos State Examinations Board, Mr Fatai Bakare in an interview with The PUNCH insisted that during the exam, the board monitored some centres in Lagos. https://punchng.com/parents-others-lament-malpractice-in-entrance-exam/?amp

Pro-Nigerien hackers, Anonymous Sudan, tried to shut down MTN Nigeria’s network, to protest Nigeria’s stance on the coup in the Republic of Niger. A credible source in the telecommunication firm, who spoke to our correspondent on Thursday, that the hackers tried to access MTN’s network many times but failed. Anonymous Sudan, a hacktivist group, had on Wednesday claimed it had launched a cyberattack against MTN Nigeria. The group claimed that its attack was because of Nigeria’s proposed military intervention in Niger. In a statement on its Telegram channel, it said, “We claim full responsibility for this attack because of Nigeria’s government actions against Niger. “They are attempting to cut power and are willing to participate in the French colonialistic planned invasion of Niger.” Commenting on the claim of the attack, the source said, “It is true, but they didn’t successfully hack us. They attempted to. They said it was because of Nigeria’s stance against Niger Republic; that it was their way of getting back and they are trying to shut down the network in Nigeria. “They made several attempts but the firewalls around our system are massive. To take it down, you would need to do a lot. There were one or two glitches, but it didn’t affect us. They tried it yesterday (Wednesday).” The source stressed that MTN would continue to invest in its cybersecurity system and boost its firewalls. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the National Information Technology Development Agency, through its Computer Emergency Readiness and Response Team, also issued a warning that it had detected hacking activities targeted at government digital services. MTN’s voice, data earnings rise 21% to N1.8tn It said, “The hacktivist group, known for its politically and religiously motivated cyber campaigns, poses a significant risk to our critical information infrastructure.” The agency advised financial service providers, telecommunication providers, and relevant government service providers to be cybersecurity ready. Meanwhile, the British embassy has announced plans to reduce its staff numbers in Niger, while the United States has ordered the evacuation of some staff and families from its embassy in the country. According to Britain’s foreign ministry, the embassy is reducing its staff strength because of the security situation in the country. It said, “There has been a military takeover in Niger, which has led to protests and unrest. The group that organised the demonstration on 30 July (M62) has called for another on Thursday, Aug. 3, Niger Independence Day. “Protests can be violent, and the situation could change quickly without warning.” According to the US State Department, its mission in Niger will remain open and senior leadership will continue working from there. However, State Department spokesperson, Matthew Miller, in a statement, announced that the US had ordered the temporary departure of non-emergency US government personnel and others from Niger. He said, “Given ongoing developments in Niger and out of an abundance of caution, the Department of State is ordering the temporary departure of non-emergency U.S. government personnel and eligible family members from the U.S. Embassy in Niamey. “The United States remains committed to our relationship with the people of Niger and to Nigerien democracy. We remain diplomatically engaged at the highest levels.” https://punchng.com/coup-pro-niger-hackers-back-junta-attack-mtn-nigeria/?amp

Justice S. M. Akanbi of the Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin has sentenced one Mohammed Kazeem Beiwa to death for the murder of his neighbour identified as Olokose Ojo Olushola in Ilorin a few days before his wedding in 2021. The court also handed down 10 years imprisonment and a N100,000 fine each to his two other accomplices; Madu Jeremiah and Mohammed Chatta while the fourth defendant, Jimoh Abdulateef was set free by the Court for lack of diligent prosecution. The four accused persons were facing prosecution before the court on eight count charges having been accused of criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, culpable homicide, illegal possession of firearms, and illegal removal of human parts. The prosecution led by the former Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice of Kwara State, Senior Ibrahim Sulyman alleged that the four accused persons attacked and kidnapped the victim Olokose Ojo Olushola in his house a few days before his wedding in Ilorin and killed him sometime in 2021. The accused persons after kidnapping, killing, and dismembering the victim, also negotiated for payment of ransom for his release from the family knowing he was dead already, the prosecution told the court at the trial. The prosecution at the trial of the case called nine witnesses and tendered several exhibits before the court. Delivering judgment in the case on Monday, Justice Akanbi found three of the accused persons guilty of four of the criminal charges leveled against them. He affirmed that “The defendants had caused the death of one Olokose Ojo Olushola sometime in March 2021, a couple of days before the deceased’s wedding ceremony. “The body was mutilated and despite knowing of the death of the said Olushola Olokose, the defendants still demanded ransom from the family of the deceased making it appear their victim was alive and held hostage by kidnappers. “The first defendant Mohammed Kazeem Beiwa who masterminded the horrific tragedy and was also a neighbour of the deceased was sentenced to death by hanging life imprisonment, and 10 years imprisonment with N100,000 fine on different counts.” https://punchng.com/court-sentences-man-to-death-for-killing-neighbour-in-kwara/?amp

The Senate President, GodsWill Akpabio, on Wednesday prevented the president’s media aide, Dele Alake from reciting the second stanza of the National Anthem. Alake was asked by the Minority leader, Senator Simon Mwadkwom, to recite the second stanza of the National anthem after taking the nominee up on his old social media post. Mwadkwom said, “I read a statement where you labeled some particular party as wild dogs, selling blood online. Are you aware of that statement? Did you say that? “As someone who will be the image maker if eventually appointed by Mr President as the Minister of Information of this country, we are supposed to be conversant with our National Anthem.” The minority leader added, “Mr President, if you would allow me, I will like for the nominee to recite the second stanza of the National anthem.” However, Akpabio and the Senate President, Opeyemi Bamidele protected the nominee from answering any of the questions. In response, the Senate leader said, “I have come under order 12 and it is important that this is stated. No senator shall stand up to talk to other senators unless to call attention to a point of order or privilege arising. “(B) Order 55, section 12 make provision that a standing senator may be interrupted.” Bamidele said, “The issue was raised because the Senate leader raised an order on campaigns. “We are screening a ministerial nominee; we cannot be bringing an issue of a political party which was done under pressure months ago.” Similarly, in his defense, the Senate President said campaigns were over and such issues should be ignored. Akpabio in response said nominees were supposed to tell the Senate what they would bring to the table and not to sing songs. https://punchng.com/how-akpabio-bamidele-prevented-alake-from-reciting-national-anthem/?amp
