PoliticsShaibu Welcomed In Edo Labour Party — Chairman, Kelly Ogbaloi by buzmanjohn(op): 11:31am On Aug 12, 2023
The Chairman of the Labour Party in Edo State, Kelly Ogbaloi has said that embattled Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu is welcome if he decides to join the party.

The chairman who spoke on Friday after a meeting with governorship aspirants under the party, said everyone is also welcome in the party.

He said, “If Philip Shaibu is coming to our party he will not be coming as Deputy Governor but as an individual like any other person. The party is open to everyone in Nigeria. The doors are open to anybody who want to come in to contest the election”.

Ogbaloi said the party decided to meet with the aspirants having observed that the numbers of the aspirants are increasing daily.

He added that there is a need for the party to bring the aspirant together, interact with them and tell them how best they can go about their sensitization towards their primary election. He said there is a need to also appreciate them for the manner they have conducted themselves so far.

On whether the labour party will take advantage of the crisis between Governor Godwin Obaseki and Deputy Governor, Rt. Comrade Philip Shaibu, Ogbaloi said his party needs a healthy opposition, adding that when you fight with a healthy man winning is more interesting and better.

He further said that the party’s expectation is for all the aspirants to compete, noting that the number of aspirants would reduce during the period of picking the nomination forms, adding that at the end of the exercise, one candidate will emerge.

He added, “We want the Labour Party to win the governorship election come 2024. And to win the election we must have a candidate that will be generally acceptable to the people of Edo State,’ he added.

On the forthcoming Local Government election, he said the party is prepared for the election, adding that no party will go into an election without preparation.

CelebritiesPray For My Death If I Consult With Demons – Adeboye by buzmanjohn(op): 11:15am On Aug 12, 2023
The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has reacted to claims that he consults with demons anytime he is about to minister at the Redemption Camp.

The cleric, popularly called Daddy GO, said his attention was drawn to some publications where the allegations were made by some clerics and groups of persons.

Speaking on the claims on Friday night at the ongoing Annual Convention 2023, Adeboye urged the congregation to pray for his death if he ever did such.

While saying he would not mind people spreading such rumours, he said it occurred to him that even some of his members might have believed the rumours.

In a bid to clear people’s doubt, the clergyman said, “I want you to say this prayer, ‘If Pastor Adeboye has any links with any demonic powers, let him die before the sun rises.

“But if he is using your power, multiply the powers by seven folds.” he added.

PoliticsNiger: Gap Between Leaders And Followers Is Africa’s Problem – Sam Adeyemi by buzmanjohn(op): 6:42am On Aug 11, 2023
The Senior Pastor of Daystar Christian Center, Sam Adeyemi has decried the huge gap between the leaders and the masses, saying it is a peculiar problem in Africa.

He said African countries are dealing with a deeply rooted leadership culture that makes the leader very powerful and the led practically a slave, across almost all sectors.

Speaking against the backdrop of the military coup in Niger Republic in a series of tweets on Thursday, the clergyman said neither military, democratic nor monarchical systems have fostered rapid development in most African countries.

While stating that it was time to address the real problem, Adeyemi said the only way out is to intentionally replace old beliefs and behaviours with new ones, adding that democracy has thrived best in countries that value life and equality.

He wrote, “The military coup in Niger draws attention to Africa’s leadership issues. The leaders of the coup have cited security concerns due to threats by jihadist groups and poor economic growth as reasons for the coup. Similar reasons were given for the military coups in Burkina Faso and Mali.

“The regional body, ECOWAS, insists the coup must end and the former president must be returned to power. They say democracy remains the best form of government. But a large number of Nigeriens are taking sides with the leaders of the coup.

“It is sad that neither military, democratic nor monarchical systems have fostered rapid development in most African countries. It’s time we address the real problem.

“We are dealing with a deeply rooted leadership culture that makes the leader very powerful and the led practically a slave, across almost all sectors. The issue with culture, like habits, is that though people desire change, they will default to their old ways, consciously or unconsciously, when they have to make choices, and they will ultimately produce the same results.

“The only way out is to intentionally replace old beliefs and behaviours with new ones. Only those with the sophistication to shift beliefs, values and culture on a mass scale can lay the foundation for meaningful change, especially for a country. The platforms would be high quality education, the example of leaders, economic empowerment, infrastructure, and so on.

“Truth be told: democracy has thrived best in countries that value life and equality. The power gap has been collapsed and being a leader does not make you superior to the people you lead. In fact, being a leader is understood to be a call to serve the led and leaders don’t consume most of the resources meant for the commonwealth.”

PoliticsKebbi Gov Approves N675m Furniture Allowance For Elected Council Chairmen by buzmanjohn(op): 1:50pm On Aug 10, 2023
Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has approved the sum of N675 million for the payment of furniture allowance to the 21 elected local government council chairmen in the state.

The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Alhaji Ahmed Idris, made this known in a statement made available to newsmen in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday.

Idris quoted the Permanent Secretary, Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Sani-Umar, as saying that “the approval is for 2022 to 2024.”

While appreciating the governor for the kind gesture, the permanent secretary also commended him not only for making people’s lives meaningful but also for executing projects that have a direct bearing on the lives of generality.

Reacting to the development, Alhaji Aminu Ahmed, the Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, who is also the Chairman, Birnin Kebbi Local Government, lauded the governor on behalf of his colleagues.

He assured that the money would capture furniture allowance for the local government council, councillors, and secretaries.

“The allowance is long overdue but with the coming of this administration, our impeccable and amiable governor has graciously approved the allowance, this is a sign of good leadership.

“May Almighty Allah guide him and give him the wisdom to excellently pilot the affairs of the state,” he prayed.

HealthResident Doctors List Conditions To Suspend Strike by buzmanjohn(op): 7:17am On Aug 10, 2023
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has listed the release of the circular for one-for-one replacement of clinical staff, and the payment of the 2023 Medical Residency Training Fund as minimum conditions to call off its indefinite strike which commenced on July 26.

The National President of NARD, Dr Emeka Orji, disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent on Wednesday.

Orji said though the planned nationwide protest was suspended, the association was giving the Federal Government 72 hours to meet some of its urgent demands to call off its strike.

According to him, the association will decide to continue or call off the strike by Friday, August 12.

The striking doctors had earlier planned to commence a daily peaceful protest, starting from Wednesday, August 9, 2023, if the government fails to meet their demands.

Orji said, “We had a fruitful meeting yesterday (Tuesday) at the Villa and with the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, so it will not be good to have that level of meeting and the next day we hit the streets to protest, it will look as if there is an ulterior motive behind our demands.

“Our demands are germane because there is a shortage of doctors in our hospitals, so the few of us remaining are being overworked. How long are we going to continue like that? They have told us what they will do today (Wednesday), and tomorrow (Thursday), and we are hopeful they will do the needful. If they are able to do those things, then I am sure the National Executive Committee will give us the mandate to suspend the strike because we are very understanding.

“The circular for one-for-one replacement is the first and the 2023 MRTF fund is the second one. If they are able to address them, we will appeal to our members to suspend the strike while we continue to negotiate for all the salary arrears, skipping arrears, and other things.”

Orji said it should not be difficult for the government to implement the one-for-one replacement without extra expenses.

“The government has the list of those who have left and it is a matter of replacing them immediately and the new ones that are recruited are paid the salary you have budgeted to replace those who have left. So, it is not difficult to do. This is a thing that has been agreed to be done since February but nothing has been done about it, but we are hoping the government will do as agreed,” he added.

CrimeBusinessman Hits Wife’s Head Against Wall, Victim Dies by buzmanjohn(op): 11:57am On Aug 09, 2023
Relatives of a 30-year-old woman, Rafiat Okewole, are currently grieving over the sudden death of the lady allegedly in the hands of her husband, Wole.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Okewole, though married to the businessman, was living separately on Odelusi Street, in the Ijoko area of Ota, Ogun State.

She was said to have lost her life during a disagreement that ensued when she visited her husband in the Gas Line area of Ijoko on Sunday to collect money for her children’s upkeep.

The deceased was said to have been having a running battle with her husband over his alleged failure to cater for her children.

The issue, however, reached its climax when Wole allegedly smashed Okewole’s head against the wall during her Sunday visit.

Our correspondent learnt that efforts made by neighbours to save Okewole’s life after the incident failed as she was confirmed dead in the hospital where she was rushed to for medical attention.

It was further learnt that her 41-year-old husband was arrested after the case was reported at a police station by one of the deceased’s siblings.

One of the deceased’s brothers, Akinola Shittu, in an interview with PUNCH Metro, said he was devastated by the news of his sister’s death.

He said, “My elder brother called me on Sunday evening to inform me that Rafiat died. I asked what happened and he told me that it was reported to him that Wole smashed her head against the wall of his house when she went to ask for money for the upkeep of their kids.

“This happened at Wole’s Gas Line, Ijoko residence on Sunday around 3pm.

“Immediately, I rushed to the house and I saw that neighbours had already gathered and my sister was taken to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead. I am devastated.

“I later learnt that one of my brothers who lives nearby reported the case at Sango Police Station which led to Wole’s arrest.”

The deceased’s sister, Basirat Liasu, told our correspondent that the incident happened in the presence of Okewole’s daughter who accompanied her to Wole’s house.

Liasu said, “I learnt on Sunday from one of our elder sisters that Rafiat died due to injuries inflicted on her by her husband, Wole, who hit her head against the wall in his house.

“Rafiat was not living with Wole as of the time of the incident because she was Wole’s second wife. Though, his first wife also packed out earlier in the year.

“She went there to ask for money for the children’s upkeep. One of her children who accompanied her to the house told neighbours that her father hit her mother’s head on the wall.”

The deceased’s elder brother, Yusuf, told PUNCH Metro that he was the one who reported the matter at the Sango Divisional Police Headquarters.

He said, “My wife was the one that called me on the telephone and informed me that she heard that my sister died after her husband hit her head against the wall of his house.

“I rushed to the hospital at Ijoko but she was already dead and I learnt that Wole was still boasting that nothing would happen to him after killing my sister.”

Contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident.

She said Wole was already in police custody.

The PPRO said, “The Sango Ota Police Division arrested a murder suspect on August 6, 2023, around 4pm. It was one Segun Osho who reported that his sister, Rafiat Okewole, who lived at Odelusi Street, Ijoko, Ota had an argument with her husband, Oluwole Okewole, and he hit her head on the wall and she became unconscious.

“She was rushed to a hospital in Ota where she was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.

“Detectives visited the scene, arrested the suspect for interrogation and took photographs while the corpse was evacuated to the mortuary for autopsy.”

CrimeWhy I Used 10-year-old Niece As Drug Courier – Lagos Trader by buzmanjohn(op): 11:47am On Aug 09, 2023
The Lagos State Police Command has nabbed a female trader, Taye Abass, who allegedly trafficked a hard drug known as Colorado, through her niece (name withheld) to evade police checks.

The woman who lives in the Oko Oba area of Lagos confessed to the offence while being paraded by the police at the state headquarters in Ikeja, Lagos on Tuesday.

Abass said she always used the girl to transport the drugs from their house to her shop to avoid being checked, as no one would suspect a small girl.

Abass said, “When I went to Ilorin, my mother asked me to bring her with me to Lagos about two months ago. I sell drinks. When she got to my place, feeding was hard. Where I usually take my drinks for sale, somebody then introduced me to Colorado that I should be selling it. He told me the police always arrested people selling it. So whenever I am taking the drinks for sale, I usually put it (the drug) in her underwear, and ask her to put it in the shop where I always collect it back from her.”

The woman who pleaded for leniency, begged for forgiveness saying it was because of hardship, adding that other accomplices had run away.

Speaking, the underage girl said she was brought to the police station and when she wanted to bathe, the drug was found on her body.

“I told them it is my sister’s mum that put it on me. She started putting it on me when I came to her place.

“She used to sell it but I don’t know those that do come to buy it. She tells me she puts it on my body because the police can not search me,” the girl said.

Addressing the press, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the suspect was arrested through the collaborative efforts of the public and the police.

Hundeyin said, “This shows the success the collaboration with the public is yielding. The girl was found roaming the street and a good neighbor brought her to the station so she was taken to the station where she complained that she was being maltreated at home, and she ran away while running an errand. While she was being made to have her bath and change her clothes, it was discovered that the drug was hidden in her panties and that prompted further questions.”

“We extended the investigation to her home and we were able to bring her guardian to the station at the Pen Cinema Division. She did not deny it; she admitted that had been her way to courier the drugs from her home to her shops

“The girl will be handed over to her family and the suspect will be prosecuted accordingly,” the PPRO stated.

Foreign AffairsECOWAS Imposes More Sanctions On Niger by buzmanjohn(op): 6:01pm On Aug 08, 2023
The Economic Community Of West Africa States has imposed fresh sanctions over the coup in Niger Republic.

The regional bloc had earlier given Niger junta seven days to reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum or risk sanctions, including possible military action.

But the coupists called the bluff of ECOWAS and vowed to resist any foreign intervention on its soil.

It also severed ties with Nigeria, Togo, France and the US, and shut down Nigerien airspace indefinitely.

At the end of the ultimatum, the bloc scheduled a meeting for Thursday to review the situation in the West African nation.

Addressing State House correspondents on Tuesday, Presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, said more sanctions had been imposed on the individuals and entities relating with the military junta in the Niger Republic.

Although he did not go into details, he said this was carried out through the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Penguin2:
I see that subtle dig at Tinubu by Jakande’s don.

Tinubu as governor, allocated all allocatables to himself, his son, his wife and even his daughter.

But here you have the son of the former governor of Lagos and a former Minister of Works say that their father didn’t allocate even a portion of sand to them.

A man of upright morals that I suggest all Yorubas should strive to emulate and be like, not supporting and hoping to be like Tinubu.

I see a lot of similarities between Pa Jakande and Peter Obi - selflessness.

May God continue to rest his soul.

And for the records, it was Pa Jakande that is credited to have said in his inaugural address as governor in 1979 that Lagos ”is a no man’s land”.

That statement was not originated by Igbos.
PoliticsWhy Akpabio Left Keyamo’s Screening For Aso Villa – Senate Spokesperson by buzmanjohn(op): 4:37pm On Aug 08, 2023
The Senate spokesperson, Yemi Adaramodu, has opened up on reasons the Senate President, GodsWill Akpabio, on Monday, left for the Villa to see President Bola Tinubu during the screening of now-confirmed Festus Keyamo.

Adaramodu who spoke on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday morning stated that Akpabio had gone to the Villa to discuss issues on security as it relates to Niger Coup.

The PUNCH reported that the Senate President had rushed to the Villa after a heated plenary session over the motion to suspend the screening of Keyamo.

The motion to suspend the screening was initiated by Senator Darlington Nwokocha, (LP, Abuja Central).

Nwokocha had accused Keyamo of disrespecting the ninth National Assembly and leveling allegations of corruption against the previous administration.

The deliberations resulted in a rowdy session after which Akpabio called for an executive session.

However, a few minutes later, the Senate President was spotted at the Villa.

Giving the reason for Akpabio’s presence at the Villa, Adaramodu explained, “The (Senate) President stood up yesterday to go to the villa, not because of Festus Keyamo or any screening, there had been a prior invitation of the Senate President and the leadership of the Senate to the Villa based on the security situation, especially the coup d’etat in Niger Republic.

“There had been a meeting scheduled for 2:30 pm yesterday (Monday), but during the screening, we had already eaten into the time that the Senate President should have gone there. It was a security meeting. By the time he left around 3 pm to 3:30 pm, he could not come back until around 4 pm, but some people mistook it that he was summoned to the villa because of Festus Keyamo.

“Keyamo was just one out of 48 nominees that were screened, so one person cannot generate such a concern for the villa to be inviting the Senate (leadership) to the villa.”

Asked if the three nominees would still be confirmed, he said, “The questions raised about them is an ongoing issue, so once the Senate is satisfied, if we need to invite them to the chamber for reconfirmation and screening, we will do that.”

When asked if the Senate would be satisfied to clear the nominees even if security (agencies) were not satisfied, Adaramodu said, “If the security agencies are not satisfied, Senate cannot be satisfied. So, it depends on what security and the person that nominated them says.”

PoliticsJakande Conceived Banana Island, Allocated No Plot To Self – Son by buzmanjohn(op): 9:06am On Aug 08, 2023
The family of the late former governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, have said they have no single piece of land on Banana Island despite that the island was developed under the Jakande administration.

Jakande’s son, Seyi, while speaking on Monday during the maiden edition of Lateef Jakande Annual Memorial Lecture held at Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, delved into the family life of his late father, saying Jakande made no special allocation to his family as governor.

The lecture, with the theme “Lateef Jakande: The Man, His Journalism, His Politics,” was organised by the Nigerian Guild of Editors under the leadership of its President, Eze Anaba.

Jakande, a former journalist and first President of the NGE, also served as the governor of Lagos State from 1979 to 1983, and later Minister of Works under the Sani Abacha military regime.

Saying his father was selfless while developing Lagos, Seyi said, “People say does he (Jakande) even have a wife? Does he even have children? I had to tell my sister, ‘Won’t we go for DNA?’

“In the years that Alhaji Jakande served as governor of Lagos, with all that he did, he did not allocate or give anything to either his wife or son. She (his wife) stayed with Jakande at the Ilupeju residence. At a time, I asked my dad, from inception as governor, you said there was no money in Lagos, and you built schools and houses.”

He said Jakande while serving as a minister, conceived the idea of developing what is called the Banana Island today.

“He (Jakande) went back to his thinking box and said what are we going to do? They came up with the idea of the Banana Island. As Minister for Works, they took advantage of the waterways and filled them up, sold them to the rich, generated money and subsidised the housing scheme.

“Again, Baba did not even have sand on Banana Island. This was just water. He started Banana Island, created it, and filled it up, and not even (a portion) of sand (was allocated) to his beloved wife or any member of his family.”

At the event, Seyi also urged the state government to rename the Lagos State University at Ojoo after Jakande, saying the institution was the brainchild of his father.

“I want Governor Sanwo-Olu to revisit the discussion (of renaming LASU after Jakande),” he added.

Present at the event were Jakande’s wife and daughter, Sikirat Jakande and Dr Adeboye.

The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, who represented Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the event, said Jakande’s life was a reflection of humanity with several testimonies of positive impacts.

Also present was Gen. Ike Nwachukwu (retd.); former governor of Ogun State, Olusegun Osoba, while Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun was represented by a former Commissioner in Ondo State and a consultant, Kayode Akinmade.

The former spokesperson for ex-President Muhammdu Buhari, Garba Shehu, was also present among many other media industry players.

PoliticsObaseki Dismisses Impeachment Plot, Says Shaibu Planning APC Defection by buzmanjohn(op): 8:56am On Aug 08, 2023
I am not aware of any plot or any scheme to impeach the Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu. I have also checked and there was no such plan.

“So, the court action taken, for me, is a thing of shock and disappointment. I am trying to reflect on the move made by somebody that I have given a broad latitude to do his work as deputy governor. So, for him to take this kind of action is shocking.”

Obaseki said Shaibu never discussed his governorship ambition with him.

“The last time we spoke of my successor after the House of Assembly election, I did say that we should be patient and that our task is to try and finish well and conclude all our projects we started. It’s only when we do this right that we will have the support of the people for my successor.

“I believe that this action by him is a preemptive move to get a court order, keep his ticket and move to another party. I think it’s unfair for our party. We don’t need this sort of crisis. I have been getting calls all over the world and it’s rather sad that somebody who is part of an administration will do this to the administration because of his personal ambition.”

Obaseki said he was not angry “but naturally I should be disappointed.”

Meanwhile, at the state Assenbly on Monday no mention was made of the alleged impeachment move against Shaibu.

The lawmakers adjourned the plenary till next Monday, August 14.

But an Edo North group, led by a former Speaker of the House of Assembly, Kabiru Adjoto, addressed journalists on Monday, accusing Shaibu of embarrassing the people of the zone.

Adjoto said the group could not keep quiet on the current political happenings in the state expressing disbelief over the imbroglio.

He said, “We have watched in utter disbelief the self-contrived rift between our governor, Godwin Obaseki, and our son, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Rt Hon Comrade Philip Shaibu. Afemai people are a very hard-working, patriotic and loyal race.

“We recall that our two distinguished sons, who are former deputy governors, Reverend Peter Obadan and Mike Oghiadomhe, cooperated with their bosses and demonstrated the loyalty that the Afemai race is known for.

“We are surprised and embarrassed by the behaviour of Deputy Governor Shaibu in his ill-advised mission to govern the state by all means.

“Mr Godwin Obaseki has been magnanimous more than any governor in Nigeria, and has saddled our son, the Deputy Governor with the highest number of responsibilities, ranging from sports, internal revenue, boundary committee, immunisation, to mention but a few, which has earned him a name ‘the busiest Deputy Governor in Nigeria’.

“The court action is not only speculative but baseless and highly embarrassing. We are coming out today to disassociate the Afemai people from this ill-conceived action, and to also apologise to the governor of the state for this unfortunate incident.”

When contacted for reaction, the Chief Press Secretary to the deputy governor, Musa Ebomhiana, said he was on medical leave and could not comment on the matter.

PoliticsUncertified Contractor Installed Elevator That Killed Lagos Doctor — Medical Gui by buzmanjohn(op): 10:29am On Aug 05, 2023
The Chairman, Medical Guild, Dr Sa’eid Ahmad, has said findings of the investigative panel on the cause of death of Dr Diaso Vwaere revealed that the installation of the malfunctioned elevator that led to her death was done by a contractor who did not have an elevator system installation certification.

Ahmad, who made the revelation during a news conference on Friday to give an update on the probe into the circumstances that led to Vwaere’s death, said the elevator failed to work during its unveiling in June 2021.

He, however, noted that the contractor attributed the elevator’s failure to work to inadequate power supply from the generator hired for the event.

“Regular maintenance was supposed to be done every four weeks on the elevator for optimum performance,” he was quoted to have said by the News Agency of Nigeria.
Ahmad said the contractor, installers, and other persons involved in the installation should be arrested and if found culpable be made to face the law.

He also noted that a series of infrastructural challenges had trailed the house officers’ quarters of the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos, since rehabilitation in 2015 to 2016 while appealing to the state government to install a new elevator in the building through a certified installer and also ensure regular maintenance.

Noting that Vwaere should be immortalised to preserve her memory and her family support, Ahmad said the Guild would follow up on the investigation to ensure justice is served.

The PUNCH had reported that Vwaere, a medical house officer, died due to the injuries she sustained when the elevator she was in crashed in the staff quarters of the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos.

Angered by the tragic development, Vwaere’s colleagues staged a peaceful protest at the hospital.

The Nigerian Medical Association directed doctors in the three government hospitals on Lagos Island to embark on an indefinite strike over her death.

“I’m pained in my body, soul, and spirit.

I just got not-so-encouraging feedback from a parent in my school whose child was one of those who wrote the Lagos State Common Entrance Examination on Saturday.

“One of the invigilators called out answers to kids in the examination hall. Answers were not just called but our pupils were harassed and intimidated for not taking the answers. They were rushed, saying, “Why didn’t you write the answers when others were writing?”

“Please why should this be? These are primary school kids for crying out loud.

“These are kids we have worked so hard to be educated academically and morally, why teach and encourage them to cheat? Why?

What kind of evil are those in positions of authority sowing in the lives of these kids? It’s really sad, I just don’t understand this society. We keep promoting and encouraging bad characters and expect magic.

When will all this stop in Nigeria? I’m just so pissed. I know the efforts we put into getting these kids to prepare, I know how hard they worked. May that invigilator meet his Waterloo.”

Another netizen, Omolayo Afolabi, added, “Same story every year so not even CPE can do anything about it, and some of the teachers involved as invigilators are on this platform, all because of peanut they want to ruin some of the intentional parents and teachers effort, the real change begins with me and you.”

Dammy Dorcas said, “It is happening in every state. I was so mad last year, come and see the way proprietors both in public and private schools were running around to solve the questions for the kids. At a point, they asked for my own money and the way I looked at them, they just left me. I told them not to tell my pupils anything and gave a strict warning to my pupils not to shade anything given to them.”

However, Public Affairs Officer, Lagos State Examinations Board, Mr Fatai Bakare in an interview with The PUNCH insisted that during the exam, the board monitored some centres in Lagos.

PoliticsCoup: Pro-niger Hackers Back Junta, Attack MTN Nigeria by buzmanjohn(op): 10:05am On Aug 04, 2023
Pro-Nigerien hackers, Anonymous Sudan, tried to shut down MTN Nigeria’s network, to protest Nigeria’s stance on the coup in the Republic of Niger.

A credible source in the telecommunication firm, who spoke to our correspondent on Thursday, that the hackers tried to access MTN’s network many times but failed.

Anonymous Sudan, a hacktivist group, had on Wednesday claimed it had launched a cyberattack against MTN Nigeria.

The group claimed that its attack was because of Nigeria’s proposed military intervention in Niger.

In a statement on its Telegram channel, it said, “We claim full responsibility for this attack because of Nigeria’s government actions against Niger.

“They are attempting to cut power and are willing to participate in the French colonialistic planned invasion of Niger.”

Commenting on the claim of the attack, the source said, “It is true, but they didn’t successfully hack us. They attempted to. They said it was because of Nigeria’s stance against Niger Republic; that it was their way of getting back and they are trying to shut down the network in Nigeria.

“They made several attempts but the firewalls around our system are massive. To take it down, you would need to do a lot. There were one or two glitches, but it didn’t affect us. They tried it yesterday (Wednesday).”

The source stressed that MTN would continue to invest in its cybersecurity system and boost its firewalls.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the National Information Technology Development Agency, through its Computer Emergency Readiness and Response Team, also issued a warning that it had detected hacking activities targeted at government digital services.

MTN’s voice, data earnings rise 21% to N1.8tn
It said, “The hacktivist group, known for its politically and religiously motivated cyber campaigns, poses a significant risk to our critical information infrastructure.”

The agency advised financial service providers, telecommunication providers, and relevant government service providers to be cybersecurity ready.

Meanwhile, the British embassy has announced plans to reduce its staff numbers in Niger, while the United States has ordered the evacuation of some staff and families from its embassy in the country.

According to Britain’s foreign ministry, the embassy is reducing its staff strength because of the security situation in the country.

It said, “There has been a military takeover in Niger, which has led to protests and unrest. The group that organised the demonstration on 30 July (M62) has called for another on Thursday, Aug. 3, Niger Independence Day.

“Protests can be violent, and the situation could change quickly without warning.”

According to the US State Department, its mission in Niger will remain open and senior leadership will continue working from there.

However, State Department spokesperson, Matthew Miller, in a statement, announced that the US had ordered the temporary departure of non-emergency US government personnel and others from Niger.

He said, “Given ongoing developments in Niger and out of an abundance of caution, the Department of State is ordering the temporary departure of non-emergency U.S. government personnel and eligible family members from the U.S. Embassy in Niamey.

“The United States remains committed to our relationship with the people of Niger and to Nigerien democracy. We remain diplomatically engaged at the highest levels.”

CrimeCourt Sentences Man To Death For Killing Neighbour In Kwara by buzmanjohn(op): 3:34pm On Aug 03, 2023
Justice S. M. Akanbi of the Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin has sentenced one Mohammed Kazeem Beiwa to death for the murder of his neighbour identified as Olokose Ojo Olushola in Ilorin a few days before his wedding in 2021.

The court also handed down 10 years imprisonment and a N100,000 fine each to his two other accomplices; Madu Jeremiah and Mohammed Chatta while the fourth defendant, Jimoh Abdulateef was set free by the Court for lack of diligent prosecution.

The four accused persons were facing prosecution before the court on eight count charges having been accused of criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, culpable homicide, illegal possession of firearms, and illegal removal of human parts.

The prosecution led by the former Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice of Kwara State, Senior Ibrahim Sulyman alleged that the four accused persons attacked and kidnapped the victim Olokose Ojo Olushola in his house a few days before his wedding in Ilorin and killed him sometime in 2021.

The accused persons after kidnapping, killing, and dismembering the victim, also negotiated for payment of ransom for his release from the family knowing he was dead already, the prosecution told the court at the trial.

The prosecution at the trial of the case called nine witnesses and tendered several exhibits before the court.

Delivering judgment in the case on Monday, Justice Akanbi found three of the accused persons guilty of four of the criminal charges leveled against them.

He affirmed that “The defendants had caused the death of one Olokose Ojo Olushola sometime in March 2021, a couple of days before the deceased’s wedding ceremony.

“The body was mutilated and despite knowing of the death of the said Olushola Olokose, the defendants still demanded ransom from the family of the deceased making it appear their victim was alive and held hostage by kidnappers.

“The first defendant Mohammed Kazeem Beiwa who masterminded the horrific tragedy and was also a neighbour of the deceased was sentenced to death by hanging life imprisonment, and 10 years imprisonment with N100,000 fine on different counts.”

PoliticsHow Obi Found ‘missing Phones’ At Tribunal – Aide by buzmanjohn(op): 9:01am On Aug 03, 2023
The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, says his mobile phones were not stolen at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja on Tuesday.

Obi, who spoke through his media aide, Tai Obasi, told our correspondent that the phones, believed to have gone missing, were in the custody of his aide.

The media had been awash with videos and memes of the perplexed former governor of Anambra State searching for his phones at the tribunal, with many people concluding that they were probably stolen in the court while exchanging pleasantries with party supporters.

Obi, who was dressed in his usual black attire sat close to his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, National Chairman of LP, Julius Abure and renowned writer, Chimamanda Adichie, throughout the court’s proceedings.

Reacting to the drama, Obasi dismissed the report, saying the phones were never stolen.

According to him, it is normal for one to look for an item, especially when one has the notion that it is misplaced.

“To start with, he never lost his phone. What happened is that one of his aides, who usually goes around with him, was with me in the court. Usually, he keeps his phone on the table in front of him. So when his aide noticed that a lot of people were coming to greet him and his mind was off the phone, he took it for safekeeping.

“Unfortunately, the aide wasn’t with him when he started looking for the phone. So he didn’t really know it was the aide that kept it.

The whole drama didn’t take up to two minutes before the aide, who went to urinate, came back with the phone. But before, Obi’s anxiety over the missing phone became noticeable. I believe that was when whoever took the video came into the picture. The videographer, journalist, or whoever took the viral clip only captured the part where he was looking for the phone and started trending with it. They were circulating the report long before we left the court
,” he said.

On how the video trended in a negative manner it did, Obasi disclosed that they were not surprised.

PoliticsHow Akpabio, Bamidele, Prevented Alake From Reciting National Anthem by buzmanjohn(op): 7:15pm On Aug 02, 2023
The Senate President, GodsWill Akpabio, on Wednesday prevented the president’s media aide, Dele Alake from reciting the second stanza of the National Anthem.

Alake was asked by the Minority leader, Senator Simon Mwadkwom, to recite the second stanza of the National anthem after taking the nominee up on his old social media post.

Mwadkwom said, “I read a statement where you labeled some particular party as wild dogs, selling blood online. Are you aware of that statement? Did you say that?

“As someone who will be the image maker if eventually appointed by Mr President as the Minister of Information of this country, we are supposed to be conversant with our National Anthem.”

The minority leader added, “Mr President, if you would allow me, I will like for the nominee to recite the second stanza of the National anthem.”

However, Akpabio and the Senate President, Opeyemi Bamidele protected the nominee from answering any of the questions.

In response, the Senate leader said, “I have come under order 12 and it is important that this is stated. No senator shall stand up to talk to other senators unless to call attention to a point of order or privilege arising.

“(B) Order 55, section 12 make provision that a standing senator may be interrupted.”

Bamidele said, “The issue was raised because the Senate leader raised an order on campaigns.

“We are screening a ministerial nominee; we cannot be bringing an issue of a political party which was done under pressure months ago.”

Similarly, in his defense, the Senate President said campaigns were over and such issues should be ignored.

Akpabio in response said nominees were supposed to tell the Senate what they would bring to the table and not to sing songs.

PoliticsOyo Workers Continue Protest, Beat Up Colleagues For Non-Compliance by buzmanjohn(op): 8:15pm On Aug 01, 2023
Protesting members of the Nigeria Labour Congress, in Oyo State, disrupted activities at the State Secretariat, Agodi as their ongoing protest continued on Tuesday.

Some civil servants who ignored the directives of the labour union to join the protest were however not spared as some of them were beaten and chased out of their offices.

A civil servant was reportedly injured in the process after he was attacked by the protesters.

The victim who was bruised in his legs claimed to have entered the office to pick up some of his belongings when he was confronted by the protesters.

The aggrieved labour activists barricaded the entrance to the secretariat complex as they wielded sticks to enforce the strike action. This also affected the flow of vehicular traffic along the area.

The protest started on Monday with the workers demanding payment of leave bonus, payment of gratuities to retirees that had been delayed since 2021 and release of promotion letters for 2021 and 2022.

The protesting workers also alleged that Governor Seyi Makinde had refused to yield to their demands.

PoliticsMinisterial Screening: Kogi Senator Moves Against El-Rufai by buzmanjohn(op): 4:18pm On Aug 01, 2023
“Mr. President, I have a petition written against the nominee over the issue of insecurity in Southern Kaduna when he was governor.

“If I am permitted, I will like to read the petition.”

El-Rufai faced the lawmakers immediately after Olawale Edun.

Earlier, el-Rufai reeled out to the Senate his achievements as governor and former FCT minister before questions were entertained by the lawmakers.

The first to ask him the question was the lawmaker representing Zamfara West, Senator Abdulaziz Yari.

Following Yari’s question, the Senator representing Kaduna North, Suleiman Kwari, appealed to his colleagues to allow the former governor to take a bow.

El-Rufai, however, answered the questions by Yari after which Akpabio told him to leave.

The Senate President, GodsWill Akpabio, who refused to take the petition, said a number of petitions were submitted against a number of the ministerial nominees.

He said, “This is not the place to consider petitions, we will sit with the petitions later and refer them to relevant authorities.

“Please, take a bow, my brother.”
