Chapter 14 'Come in,' Ann heard a deep voice call from within as she knocked on the door. She grabbed the door handle and pushed it downwards. The door opened with a slight creak. She walked into the living room and her eyes beheld the Chief, sprawled on a three-seater sofa, placed at the right hand corner of the room. She walked to the nearest sofa at the left hand side and sat down. Chief Dapo rose from his position, sat down and turned to her. They were directly opposite each other. Ann sized him up. He was a dapper and plump man with a pot-belly whose presence was rather betrayed, even by the white under-shirt he was putting on. He looked like a man in his late fourties. 'That's an interesting performance out there, young lady,' the man said somehow mysteriously. 'I was told about your little nice display on your way here. How you whipped the sexually aroused guys nearly unconscious.' Ann was bewildered. How did he knew? She decided to play him. 'What guys are you talking about? Did you......?' Ann stopped midway, realization dawning on her. 'You sent the guys to me?' 'Exactly! I needed to know how capable and competent you are for you to be working for me,' he said with a mischievous grin. 'I regard that as nonsense. What if I didn't put up a fight? They would have banged my destiny out,' fired Ann angrily. 'Thank God they didn't. So, let's set that matter aside. For a start, I'm giving you an assignment. But first of all, can you please remove that scary and imposing mask? You didn't use a mask while fighting my boys, why using it now?' Chief complained. 'What if I did? I'm sure the mask isn't holding your mouth to voice out whatever is it you wanted to say. And if you don't know, well, I don't like my time being wasted. So please go straight to the point!' said Ann. 'Well,' Chief Dapo sighed. 'There is this package you're going to help me get this very night. You will have to find a way of getting into the building where the package is kept, it is secured by dangerous men who won't hesitate to kill you if they see you there. There is a particular label on it which you can use to identify it. Wait a minute,' he said and bent his head, operating his Tablet device crazily. A beep sounded on Ann's phone some minutes after. As Ann proceeded to take her phone out and check the problem, Chief Dapo said, 'I've forwarded the address of the place, label of the package and other essential details to you. Study them carefully and don't forget you are to strike tonight.' Ann started to ask him about what really was in the package but stopped herself, it wasn't her business. 'Are you sure you are up to this?' he enquired. 'Let's see how it goes,' Ann said with a slight smile. 'OK. I guess we are done here,' Chief Dapo said and fell back to the sofa. Ann bowed to him and left the house. Her heart gave a quick jolt as she moved towards her car. Something is happening to her right now, she knew. And it must be in her base. She got in the car, started it and flew away, her speed ridiculously very high. Her base was two hours away. ¤¤¤ Ann's Base The door gave way and Miri entered. She put the set of master keys in her pocket as she dashed towards a corner, gun pointed at the ceiling. She flipped on the light switch and looked round. Everywhere was neat and calm. Happy but cautious, Miri made her way to the middle of the living room and peered at the table. Only some keys and T.V remote control was on the table. She looked round and noticed the door to a room. The room looked like it was recently left, so Miri made her way cautiously to the door. She turned the door handle, it wasn't locked. She opened the door and peeped inside the room. The room was extremely dark. Miri's instincts sharpened and her alertness grew. Something was ominous about the room. She was right, for she soon heard a computerized voice, 'Human presence detected. Say the passcode, repeated, the passcode in 10 seconds. 10...9...' Miri banged the door close and made her way out of the house, running quickly. Red, warning lights beeped at each corner of the house, like an ambulance van. Damn it! She swore as she got out and closed the door. She should have known better, that it wouldn't be easy to break into an assassin's house. By now, it was likely Ann had been notified about the break into her house. She looked at the house, cocked her gun, and whirled round, her supressed gun shooting at the security cameras in front of the house. When she was done, she said aloud, 'I'll come back, prepared for you.' And she made her way to where her men were waiting for her in a parked car on the road, behind a cab. No sooner had she got in, than the car zoomed off. ¤¤¤ Trees flashed past, as the car made its way through the long stretch of brown dusty road. Ann was no longer at ease, like Achebe's Obi's family. Her suspicions were true. Someone had broken into her base. Her phone had given her the warning signal not long ago. She wished the person had entered the other room so that the security laser might get him or her. But she feared that if the intruder was the assassin she met the other day, she might have the tools to destroy the security. Ann half-prayed she didn't. Did she just prayed? She thought. When last had she done that? She had lost total faith in God as she felt He wasn't there to protect her family from destruction. It wasn't like she hated Him, she just did not believe in Him anymore. The car continued moving on amidst the bushy environment. FAST FORWARD Ann's heart quickened as the car came to a tarred and busy road. She waited for the vehicles nearby to move away, she then veered onto the road and started speeding crazily away, just wanting to get home quickly. Dangerously, she sped on the busy road, dodging and warding off traffic signals and warnings and nearly crushing a teenager at a zebra crossing. People in other vehicles cursed her as she drove along. Some traffic warders tried to runs her but themselves fled from the road to avoid been hit or crushed to death as she didn't stop or apply brakes at seeing them. Suddenly, police cars sirens greeted her from behind. Ann was sure the police was after her and soon confirmed it when she saw some police vehicles coming from afar. She knew it was the traffic warders she had driven past that alerted the police about her crazy driving. 'Stupid individuals!' she cursed. She looked at the rear-view mirror again. She was still far from them, but they were coming closer. Their vehicles were faster than hers. This wasn't going to be a good thing, Ann thought angrily. To be continued Ann is in deep trouble!! |

Chapter 13 The road to the said address was bumpy and untarred. Potholes made their presence known as the Venza slid into them, making the car and its occupant shake like a loose bolt and nut. The sun shining above, penetrating into the car through the windscreen could have or maybe was even making things worse. Ann, clad in a black angora hoodie and a black pair of trousers glanced at the rearview mirror for the umpteenth time and smiled. She could see the black car trailing ever since she had turned to the dusty road. She lifted her right hand from the steering wheel and patted her holstered Glock. It was time to give whoever these people may be some show. With a frightening alacrity, she accelerated and veered into the sharp bend ahead. She drove some distances, stopped the car and got down. She went to sit on the bonnet, arms crossed, waiting for whoever was trailing her. She didn't have to wait for long, as the black car came into view and stopped a few metres away. Two men alighted, one was chubby while the other was unbelievably tall. They walked towards her. Ann didn't turn to look at them, instead she listened to their footsteps as they came closer. Finally, they came to where she was. The chubby guy moved closer while the tall guy stood at a distance. 'Hey, sexy girl,' he said, his neck at an impossible angle, his face a few metres away from Ann's. He stank of alcohol. 'You're too beautiful, you know?' Ann said, 'I've heard that several times.' 'Well, we saw you driving past and saw you're too hot to be ignored. So, we followed you to have some er fun.. You know,' the guy said and gave a bizarre laugh. 'Whoever told you I'm a sl*t? Do I look like one? Or you take me for anyone you can just sneak on and bang?' Ann fired. 'Baby girl, don't offer any resistance. But if you think.....well, we may have to force you,' he eyed her. Ann looked around, the area was deserted. It didn't seem like the road was used often. She got down from the bonnet. 'And if you don't mind, please excuse me,' she said and tried to walk away. 'Of course we do, baby girl. Let's catch fun,' he said. He swung her round and pushed her against the car. He leaned forward, straddling her with his plump arms. She couldn't get away. Ann felt deep anger rising, feeding on her deep-seated fury that men like these viewed women as a prey they could easily devour. 'Why not, sweetheart?' he continued. 'I guess you're new here and don't know how we do things. You just get in the car with us and we will have a mindblowing three-some.' Without a word, Ann lifted her knee quickly, aiming at his groin. But he deftly parried the blow with his own leg. He was heavy, and he weighed at least twice as much as she did. 'Oh, so you're gonna put up a fight, are you?' he snarled. 'I like that.' He grabbed her arms and held her fast. His breath reeked of tobacco as his face craned toward her. Ann's anger mutated into rage. The face she saw in front of her was no longer that of a drunken misfit. She felt that she was looking into the eyes of a deeply evil man who had killed and destroyed her family. A man, who did not deserved to live. She drew her head back and gave him a head-butt. He yelled and left her. A strong arm reached around her neck from behind. The tall man had joined them too. 'Don't make a fuss and you won't get hurt too much,' the tall man said from behind her. The hurt chubby man hissed as he rubbed his forehead, came closer and tried to touch her b**bs. Ann's fury erupted and she jabbed her elbow into the solar plexus of the man behind her, and her knee went straight to the chubby guy's crotch. Both men buckled over in pain. She pulled out her Glock and moved closer to them. She whipped the pistol across the face of the chubby man. Then she whirled round and smashed the heel of her hand into the other guy's face. She felt and could hear the bridge of his nose breaking. After that, everything came automatically to her, a deeply satisfying sequence of kicks and punches, turns and slices. When she stopped, both guys were lying on the ground, groaning in pain. Unable to stop her anger, she bent over and lowered her Glock to the head of the chubby man. She pulled back the pin with a click. The man looked up, eyes wide with terror. 'Please,' he whimpered. 'Don't kill me.' He was pathetic. But she still wasn't done. She landed a blow on his face and suddenly, she felt a punch from behind. The tall man had gotten up. Ann stood up and turned, angry. She quickly moved aside as he rushed towards her and he fell flat on the floor. She pulled him up and landed a tardy blow to his crotch, using the sharp toe of her shoe. He doubled over, groaning and gasping. She smashed the butt of her gun against the back of his head and he fell flat on his face. She bent and grabbed him by his hair, yanking his head back. His face was puffy and pitiful. Short of breath, she managed to say in a mock-kindly tone. 'Baby boys, you were right. I'm kind of new around here, so maybe you could help with a little something,' and she banged his forehead on the ground. She stood up, and put her Glock back in its holster, feeling her fury draining away. She them said to them, 'If I ever see your faces again, I will kill you. Now get the hell outta here!' The men scurried to their feet and limped away, never once, looking back. They fled into their car, turned madly and drove off, leaving a wisp trail of dust. Ann patted her trouser, ridding it of the little dust that had accumulated on it. She walked to her car, entered and zoomed off. ¤¤¤ Kara village, Nyar Chief Dapo's House Chief Dapo -the man Ann would be working for- 's house stood out from the rest of the little and lonely village. It was a gigantic three story building that towered above everything else in the village. As Ann neared the house, she reached for her mask on the seat beside her and put it on. With a breath, she stopped the car infront of the house and walked to the gate. She opened the gate, there was no gatekeeper. She closed it behind her and walked into the building. To be continued To be sincere guys, your responses to this story is not encouraging. Is it that you're tired of the story and want me to stop or what? |

Chapter 12 ANN'S BASE, Nyar The heat was killing. It made the house feel more like a hell on earth. The fans whirring, at a corner of the living room might as well not be working at all. For they did nothing to neutralize the effect of the heat. Ann, clad in a black denim bum short and a white tank top cussed angrily as she blew at herself madly with a newspaper. The heat was strange to her, there is none of this in England, she thought. Ann reached over to the table infront of her and picked the phone on the table. She tapped it on and switched on the data connection. No sooner had she done this than she got a message notification from her MoonsClan email account (tacha@moonsclan.com). She wondered what was wrong and clicked on the notification. It loaded and she saw the message in full. She checked the sender, it was Rabbi. She could nearly have jumped out of her skin had this been possible. Was he back from his journey? He ought to be gone for three years like the last time. If he is back, he would already have known about her journey here. Had he seen Pablo already? If he had, she knew Pablo could not have been alive at that moment. Bizarre thoughts filled her head at the thought of Pablo been dead. Oh Lord, what has she caused? Rabbi hated independent decisions - making decisions without getting him involved. And moreso, he always had the opinion that a revenge mission is a stupid adventure not befitting an assassin. In his opinion, what has happened couldn't be changed. Why cry when the head is off, he would say. She peered at the message and started reading: "Hi Tacha," the message read. "I heard Pablo sent you or rather he allowed you to move down there for a foolish adventure. So, all this while, you stil harbor revenge in your dark heart? What exactly gave you the boldness to venture on that time-wasting game? And you know I hate revenge missions like shit, don't you? Just so you know, Pablo is dead..." Ann's head flew off, her fears had been confirmed. Oh poo, she had just caused the death of a man who meant well for her. Her eyes smarted as tears began to well up in her eyelids as she continued reading the message. "... because he had bent the rules," the message continued. "And whoever disobeys the law of the Clan never lives to tell the story. But I won't kill you, because you are a great asset to the Clan. And Pablo deserved the death. Being the second-in-command, he ought not to be the one to disobey the rules. Now, my order is, I want you to cancel that stupid revenge mission of yours rightaway. I've got a project for you over there. There is a man in that same state you are now who needs an assassin to work for him. I've assigned you to him. I told him your name is Tacha, so you would be known as that by him. I've also given him your masked pictures, so don't reveal your face to him. The details you need to know about the man has been sent to you also, so you are to contact him rightaway. Don't do anything funny, young lady, or you will have yourself to blame. Remember I'm Rabbi and I know everything about you, even what you're wearing right now. Be careful." Ann's eyes popped in shock. Her revenge mission to be cancelled? For a long time, she continued staring at her phone. ¤¤¤ The Divisional Police Station, Nyar Special Agent Carl Agbor rocked the swivel chair delicately as he stared at the door ahead. He was a tall and dark angular man with a sharply sloped forehead. His office was too tastefully decorated to be in a police station. The marbled floor gleamed and sparkled so much that you could almost see your intestines in the reflection. The wall was painted a dizzy cream colour adding to the beauty of the office. An air conditioner protruded into the office from an angle while two ceiling fans hung down from the Paris plastered ceiling. A knock came on his door. 'Come in, please,' he said, his reply rather too simultaneous with the knock. The door opened and two agents walked in, one was a lanky and fair man known as Joseph while the other was Desmond. 'Please, have your seats,' he pointed at the seats infront of him. The two agents looked at each other and sat down anxiously. 'First of all, I really want to commiserate with you on the death of your girlfriend, Agent Desmond. Her death is a shock to me. May she rest in perfect peace,' Agent Carl said. Agent Desmond bent his head in rage. He knew it was very normal and expected of him to do that but he wondered why he had to mention it at that moment when covered wounds are still liable to be opened by a mere prick. 'Actually, I sent for you guys on something. I got a message from the Inspector this morning. He was alarmed at the rate of recent assassinations of icons in the state. He blamed us for not been efficient. But can we be more efficient than this? However, he gave us an ultimatum of two months to bring the murderers to book,' he paused and swallowed saliva. 'I'm putting you guys in charge of the case, you are to investigate and direct other lower police officers and agents to the effect of the case. I'd be giving you people some files to start with. Any opinions or contradictions?' Agent Carl asked. 'None Sir,' the men chorused. 'Alright, you guys can go. Start work immediately, remember we were given only two months,' he concluded with a dismissive tone. Agent Desmond could not have been more happier. Being in charge of that very much case, meant he could get the killers of Sandra, his girlfriend. He was very sure it was the assassins (who had been killing influential people all around) that are responsible for the attack on Chief Martin's house and the death of his girlfriend. I'll get you guys, he mouthed under his breath as he stood up from the seat. The two men saluted Agent Carl, and with a determined look on their faces, they marched out of the office. Chapter 11 NASCAO (National Agency for Surveillance Cameras Administration and Operations) Headquarters, FCT, Aceland The electric bulbs in the silent conference room cast yellowish and dreamy lights on the seven people sitting round the wide table. The fans hanging from the ceiling whirred steadily, adding to the dreamy outlook of the room. Mr Simon, the NASCAO chairman looked round at the six people infront of him, sitting in groups of three at each side of the wide table. To his left hand side, nearest to him was Dr Everton Clark, the Technical Operations Manager, next to him was Mrs Susan Albert, the Surveillance Cameras Software Developer and next to her was Mr Dapo Johnson, the Surveillance Cameras Installation Supervisor. To his right hand side, nearest to him was Dr Blessing Chinoyerem, the Vice-Chairman, nearest to her was Mrs Ngozi Okoronkwo, the Surveillance Cameras Efficiency Monitor and lastly Mr Dare Fadare, the Surveillance Cameras Security Supervisor. Mr Simon cleared his throat audibly and started talking, 'It is with due honour I called this meeting. Just this morning, I got a call from our office in Nyar State asking us to look into some problems affecting their system recently. It was learned that their system was hacked into, by two different sources and all efforts to track their locations had proved abortive as the sources were not even trackable, if there is such word in the dictionary. They also complained of some missing footages in their database which they said they knew it was the handiwork of those that hacked into their system. They were sure it was the work of the assassins involved in the recent deaths of important men in the state. I'm sure you all heard about the recent murders of icons in Nyar, including the death of the famous Chief Martins. Yeah, no matter how hard they tried, they just couldn't find the footages of the incidents. Yet the cameras there are fully working. And the Police is pointing accusing fingers at us, because without the surveillance, they won't know how and where to start investigations. And we are now under pressure to resolve the issue because I got a call from the President not long ago, asking me to find a way to solve the matter on time. Now, the question is, could this be the work of some cyber-criminal or an assassin?' Dr Everton stood up, he was a rather short and bookish man with exaggerated features. But for what he lacked in height, he had in build. He was wide and burly with a chest that reminds you of a petrol or water barrel. 'Let's look at this closely,' he said. 'It could be the work of a cyber-criminal truly or some experienced assassin, but who knows? In my own opinion, I think the main action we should take now is to tell them to transfer their data to us, so we can look into it from here,' he concluded and sat down. 'Any other opinions?' Mr Simon asked but there were none. 'Alright guys, I've already told them to transfer their data to us and they've done that. So I will want you guys to start working on it now and find a way to catapult the hackers out of the system, protect the system against future attacks and if possible, find their location. And please do be careful too, you don't want us having to look into some disorders in our own system as a result of a mistake later on, do you? Please, work on it successfully and let's clear our nation from these scallywags. Good day.' ¤¤¤ The MoonsClan Village, Dulwich, England Rabbi walked up to the entrance of the village and knocked on the old metallic gate. The weather was chilly and freezing with a determined vigour. The pale sun overhead did nothing to the cold. The cold was enough to make a man go bunkers but it had no effect on Rabbi. As he heard the gate door being opened, he looked up at the sky and smiled. A tired looking man popped out of the opened gate like a dolphin and bowed to him. He then stood up and stepped aside for Rabbi to enter into the village. FAST FORWARD Pablo rushed to the entrance to the room and flung himself at Rabbi's feet as he entered. He bowed, his forehead touching the floor and kissed his feet. 'Welcome back master!' he greeted. 'I am back! The owner of the house is back! I've been gone for too long and I'm ready to re-effect my leadership of this Clan,' Rabbi drawled. 'No one can and will take your Clan from you, my lord,' Pablo said. 'Please, come and sit down while I get some cold water for you.' Rabbi walked to a corner of the room and sat down on a bench. Pablo was about to go and get some water for him when he heard Rabbi yell. 'Where's Tacha?' he asked. Tacha is the nickname he choosed for Ann, after a popular Nigerian celebrity. Pablo's heart skipped a beat. Oh God, what has he done? He had granted Ann's request to go and revenge her parents' death without seeking the consent of Rabbi. He had thought he would have stayed longer on his journey as he usually did, long enough for Ann to finish her mission. And Rabbi hated doing something behind his back. It was even against the law to do so, the penalty was instant death. 'I... I...,' he stammered in fear and fell on his knees and started rubbing his palms together, requesting for mercy which he wasn't sure would be given to him. 'You allowed her to go to Aceland for her to revenge her parents' death, didn't you?' asked Rabbi. Pablo was not surprised, he knew Rabbi would have known anyway. Afterall, wasn't he the master of the Clan? 'And you know the penalty for doing things without my consent. You really have the nerve, to do things behind my back. I regretted ever making you the second in command,' Rabbi ranted, brought a gun from his holster and fired a shot at Pablo immediately. Pablo fell into a huge, lifeless heap. To be continued First real episode after all this while, I hope you guys love it. |
