CHAPTER 19

Three weeks later
Ann's New Base, Nyar

The pale blue light gave the workout room a dreamy look. In several sections of the room were some people, four in all. At an extreme corner was Ann, dressed in workout vests and pants, working furiously at the treadmill. At various corners were Ann's newly gotten helping hands. A quick introduction...

Meet Harry, a professional and seasoned computer wizard. Aged nineteen and handsome, he had an outstanding brown skin and a prominently pointed nose like those of the Caucasians. He is an expert when it comes to technical matters. If great care isn't taken, he can hack into one's brain grin

And then there is slim Oyin, a Nigerian-Acelander. He was a product of a relationship that happened to come into life during the war that led to some people fleeing Nigeria to create another country now known as Aceland. Oyin happened to witness the war which lasted for fifteen good years. He was given birth to, two years after the war started and was forced to fight in the war at a tender age. It was there he learnt how to handle guns. He was an expert gun handler; he could have shot the sky if this was possible. He never misses his target, all he need to do is to just release that one shot and all is over.

And finally, here comes Shira, Ann's favourite. Pretty and dark skinned, hers was a raw talent she developed on by participating in local wrestling competitions, fighting bullies and so on. She is a veteran when it comes to hand combat. She had fought and won over sixteen men singlehandedly and at once. Although she got injured then. But it still doesn't hides the fact that she is talented, or does it?

'I think that would be enough,' Ann said as she wiped her face furiously with a small face towel, trying to get rid of the rivulets of sweat on her face.

The three stopped abruptly and each stood up, mopping their faces with towels.

'Let's go and clean up. And then we can now discuss how to get rid of the Finance Minister,' she said and proceeded to move out.

'OK boss,' the trio muttered..

¤¤¤
Some minutes later...

Ann loved the living room in the new base. It was bigger, wider, spacious and way more airy than the one at her previous base. Besides, it was beautiful and well planned. And who won't fall in love with a proper building?

As she walked out of her room, she was making ideas and crossing them out in her brain. She finally hit on a plan to get the Finance Minister. Satisfied, she walked through the long hallway and finally to the living room. The trio were already at the living room, chatting and making fun of each other. When they sensed Ann's presence, they adjusted themselves and fell silent.

She walked to the biggest settee and sat on it. She then crossed her left leg over her right leg and gazed straight at them. They looked back with all seriousness.

'OK guys. You know we have an immediate job on our hands. Which is to murder the Finance Minister. We have no correct details about him yet. So this is what is going to happen, Shira shall start the job...' she paused to watch her reaction but she only stared back defiantly, not batting an eyelid.

She continued, 'From the researches I've made so far, I discovered that the Minister's wife is looking for a maid. Her previous one had fled when she had made life a hell for her. She is known to maltreat her maids, and the last straw broke the camel's back. Hence, the reason why no one is willing to do the job. Shira will go and work for her as a maid. She will act as an undercover agent, getting news and details for us about the man. You must try your best, Shira.'

'I will, boss,' she said with a grin.

'I think we're through here. Someone should start to prepare food for you guys except me. I need to go somewhere.' And she stood up from the settee and walked away.

Minister of Finance's house

Miri parked the car under the canopy and stepped out. She walked straight to the main building, greeting the security officials politely. They knew her and she was not strange to them. She smiled as she walked into the building and bounced into the gigantic sitting room. Mrs Jude sat on a beautiful couch, gazing at the huge and noisy flat screen television, a plate of
chin-chin in her hands, munching with reckless abandon. When she saw her, she froze for a few seconds. She then reached for the remote control and switched off the television. With a frown, she turned back to her.

'What is it?' she asked her fiercely.

With a silly smile, Miri made her way to a couch directly opposite Mrs Jude and sat down facing her. The woman never liked her.

'I'm here to give you an advice concerning your safety and that of your husband. If you don't follow it, get ready to have your family members weep for you,' she said.

Paralyzed with sheer terror, Mrs Jude quickly threw her arms up, snapping her thumb on her middle finger repeatedly and jerking them back over head. 'God forbid such,' she said with eyes round like saucers.

'Ok. If you don't want that your God to allow it, you follow what I want to say. Now listen to me, about your proposed maid hunting, are you with me?' she questioned.

The woman nodded shakingly.

'Anytime you see a person here and wants to be your maid, just alert me. For those who wants to murder you and your husband will verily try to sneak in here and work as an insider, trying to gather information...'

Mrs Jude cut in abruptly, 'Someone called me today, a female; she said she wants to be my maid and announces she is coming here tomorrow. She introduced herself as Kate.'

'Kate indeed!' Miri exclaimed.

'You know what?' she said with a coy grin. 'I will receive the lady tomorrow. You don't need to do anything. I will handle it. I need to know if the lady is the criminal or not. Just sit back and watch. Understood?'

'yes... Yes,' Mrs Jude muttered hysterically.

Chapter 18

Ann's Laboratory

Ann wrung her hands vigorously in the soapy water in the sink. She then turned on the sink tap and rinsed her hands. Then she opened the barricade in the sink preventing the water from going down and the water gushed away, down the underground pipes. She took a towel hanging on a metallic pole and dried her hands. She then proceeded to walk out of the laboratory.

She took a look at the clock in the laboratory before going out. It was past four in the morning. After she had gotten the package, she had driven away, narrowly missing the police vehicles that came through the other way. She had gone to Chief Dapo's village, masked, and had delivered the package to an extremely delighted Chief. Then she had driven back to her base. When she got home, it was already about nineteen minutes after three. Then she had proceeded to pack and rearrange some materials. There was no way she was sleeping in that place tonight, and she meant it.

She walked to her room, took her mask and put it on her face. She then took her tablet device. She then put a video call through to Chief. He answered at the third attempt, yawning into the camera. He frowned at her, and then broke into smiles.

'Ha ha. So it was you? You were calling with an unregistered identity! Anyways, I'm still happy about that package you successfully got. You don't know how important it is to me,' he grinned from ear to ear.

Ann didn't bat an eyelid. Instead, she said, 'I got the money.'

'Yes. Why wouldn't I give the money? You deserved it!'

She continued watching through her mask as he jawed away. Abruptly, she cut in, 'Chief, I need to leave here today!'

'Why?' she watched the Chief's brows curved into a frown.

'Some people are trailing me! Someone broke in here yesterday but fled after the security effects I put in place started working.'

'When you knew that there are security measures put in place, why are you still looking for a new place?'

'Don't be stupid, chief. The measures can be destroyed. And besides, the person is an assassin after me!' Ann said.

The chief frowned at her. He then opened his mouth. 'OK. I have this new house I just finished building. But I need to register it before you can live in it.'

'Leave that aspect. How can you expect an assassin to be living in a house registered with the government? Don't worry, I know how to go about it. Just forward me the details of the house.'

'okay then,' the chief's tone suggested he was not in any way happy at the prospect of giving out his new house.

Ann smiled under the mask. He knew not what he has put himself in, she thought. ' one more thing Chief,' she said. 'I need helping hands. Three to be precise. One must be good in computers, another in gun usage and the other in hand combat.'

'But how am I to get these?' Chief said tartly.

'That's left to you. But don't forget everything I asked for must be complete today. Unless you want to forget about me working for you,' said Ann.

'I will try to,' the chief grunted.

'Please do,' she replied. 'Any other thing?' she questioned.

'yeah!' the chief's eyes shone in excitement. 'It's time for vengeance. Time to get rid of my enemies. We will work the way up. Now the first target is the little devil who...'

Ann cut in angrily. 'Chief, can you just go straight to the point?'

'Forgive me. I was carried away. The first target I want you to help me kill is the Nyar State Minister of Finance, Jude Caleb!'

'Consider it done. Good day,' Ann replied and hung the call.

¤¤¤
Chief Williams' House

Chief Williams paced round the sitting room furiously. He is back. The devil is back. He had always known and feared it, that he was not dead as Hakim claimed years ago. Now he is back, definitely for revenge. And to think that he is also vying for the position of a governor in a remote secret party helped in increasing his anger. He knew who the person would first go after, Jude, his friend and state minister of finance. He would make sure he got him killed before he started taking any step. And it starts now. He rushed to the table and picked his phone. He dialled a number.

The person picked up almost immediately. 'Williams!' the person booed from the other line.

'Jude. See I'm not calling you to exchange pleasantries. Something bad is happening,' Chief shouted.

'What's that?' Jude replied from the other line. His voice now shaking.

'Dapo is back!'

'What?' came Jude's fearful voice. 'I thought he was dead?'

'yeah. But I had feared that he might not be really dead. He is very cunning. My fears are confirmed.'

'Jesus! But how did you knew?'

'One of my boys went to see his parents at his village and discovered a huge house standing there. He claimed to have seen a lady in mask going there one day and had became suspicious. He monitored the place and got to snap his face secretly one day. He came to me and showed me the picture. It was him, very much life and blood. After more searches on him, we discovered he is anchoring a secret political party in the village, intending to be a governor. Can you imagine?'

'This is serious,' came Jude's voice.

'We now know he has someone working for him. We know the village he is taking refuge in. And we know his next step which is trying to kill one of us, especially you...'

'Eh?' screamed Jude.

'yes. He doesn't know we are aware of him and that is a step ahead'

'But what are we going to do to this?' Jude asked.

'Miri. Miri is the solution,' Chief Williams said and gave a dry, wicked laugh.

Chapter 17

11:25pm

Ann applied finishing touches to her make-up and stood up from the chair she was seating on. She got hold of the unbearably high heeled sandals on the make up table, bent and slipped them on. She glanced at the large mirror in front of her and smiled. She looked like a sl*t. Perfect!

She reached for a shelf, stooped and pulled out a drawer. She then brought out her favourite Glock 19 pistol and closed the drawer. She twirled the gun round and kissed it.

'Dear baby,' she muttered to the gun. 'Momma is out on her very first shopping and ready to take her baby out. Believe me, you will enjoy tonight.' And she laughed.

She raised her pink wig and put the gun in it. She then wore it back. The wig was designed for such purpose- to hide small pistols, grenades and so on. She had many of the wigs with her, all of various sizes, colours and styles. And each served a different purpose.

She checked her wristwatch, it was exactly eleven thirty. The time to strike! She grabbed a handbag from the same make-up table and walked out of the room, her pink high heels making loud, slapping noises on the floor.

She got out of the house and walked to the new car she just got that very evening. Her previous Venza had been left with the police and she didn't regretted doing so. She should have changed the car a long time ago, it would only bring her problems like the one she encountered today. An assassin who don't want to get caught should make sure he switches cars at will. One operation, one car, one operation, one car.

She looked at the plate number at the back of the car. It was very much fake. She had stocks of fake plate numbers with her she would apply at will on different cars. Now tell me, how could they track a fake plate number to her? Beautifully impossible!

Ann walked to the door and hopped in. She zipped open her handbag and brought out her android device and re-read the message earlier sent to her by Chief. She crammed the address and minimized the message app. She then opened the GPS application and typed in the address. At once, an automated voice came on to her phone and she placed it on her exposed laps as she started the car.

'Move forward,' the voice started commanding...

¤¤¤

'We're here!' the voice said and the GPS app closed. Ann gazed at the fenced building in front of her. It was a shady and dirty building. Weeds occupied the ground leading to the gate. Thick grass and parasitic weeds twirled all over the fenced walls and the rusty metallic gate. Behind the gate, a generator hummed and sounds laughter came occassionally.

Ann reversed the car backwards until it was reasonably far from the building and she stopped. She picked her phone and read the message again, confining her attention to the label of the package. The label was tagged SPECIMEN X0F. Whatever that meant, Ann thought as she memorised the label. She looked at the time again, it was three minutes to midnight.

When the midnight alarm beeped, she saw the gate of the building been opened and she knew the men were getting ready to move. She brought out a bubble gum from her handbag and unwrapped the cover. She then threw it into her mouth and started chewing. She zipped her handbag close, patted her wigged head and stepped out of the car.

Twisting at unbelievable angles, she started walking seductively towards the building.

=¤¤

In the premises of the building

The huge man blew smoke into the air and placed the cigarette in his mouth again. A generator hummed from a distance and bright bulbs lighted the weedy premises. He watched his men numbering eight loading and carrying out some boxes from the building into a truck. He eyed one suspiciously as he carried a box out, he knew it was the most important box- Specimen X0F- and he needed to make sure it wasn't tampered with. Suddenly, the gate opened and he jumped up. His men froze too as they watched the gate.

A beautiful young lady popped in, dressed in a pink cut out mini gown, impossibly short. The gown was slit at the chest and at the hip area too, revealing parts of her breast and hips respectively. She might as well have been naked, thought the man. With the pink wig on her head, pink high heels and a painted face, she looked no more than a LovePeddler.

The man smirked and beckoned on his men. They walked towards the girl.

'Hey handsomes, care for some fun?' the lady asked, chewing and blowing bubbles non-stop.

'yes baby,' the man said and signalled to his men. If not that time was not on his side, he would have got hold of her and banged her destiny out. But still, he would make sure she doesn't get out of that place alive as he couldn't bear the thought of her going away after seeing what was going on.

At his signal, two of his men walked to her. They were to get hold of her.

¤¤¤

Ann watched the truck parked at a distance with boxes all around it with the corner of her eyes. At the same time, she watched two men walking towards her.

She had saw the signal the huge man who looked like he was their boss gave to the men and she knew they were coming to get her. She pushed her right foot forward and balanced her left hand on her waist in a seductive pose as they came nearer. They got to her.

'Ready for fun?' she said as she reached for the button of the nearest one.

'Not yet sl*t,' he said, grabbed her wrists and raised her arms up. The second one then proceeded to do something behind her. The other men including the huge one cheered.

Ann quickly curled her hands and dug her long and artificial nails into the man's eyes which wasn't far from her reach. He left her quickly and clutched his face, yelling in rage and pain. The one behind her saw what happened and tried to fell her. Ann turned to him and rammed her right elbow on his face. The sound of bone breaking was heard as he fell, screaming.

Other six men came running towards her. One holding a knife, another holding a big rod. She swerved and tripped the one holding a knife as he tried to stab her. He fell loudly. Ann grabbed his knife and threw it at one of the men. It dug into his left eye and he fell down, dead. She looked round, the men were holding dangerous weapons and hand combat would not work in this line of fight.

She pulled her wig in a flash and brought out her Glock. Rapidly cocking it, she quickly sent bullets into the guys' bodies, including the ones on the ground.

She looked round again, the huge man was nowhere to be seen. Ann looked round, it would be dangerous to go in search of the package while the man was probably watching her somewhere in the compound.

'Where are you?' she shouted. 'Are you scared of me?'

'Scared my foot! Young sl*t,' came a deep voice from behind the truck and suddenly, bullets started raining at Ann's position.

She dove behind a dirty water drum beside her and started firing at the back of the truck. The man fired back. None could get the other.

After some minutes of continuous shooting, Ann suspected that she was about to run out of bullets and decided to end it once and for all. She removed her high heels, stood up and ran towards the truck. She dodged the bullets as she ran.

She came to the back of the truck and saw the man crouched behind the truck, pointing his gun at her, all the while feeling his pockets for something. Probably he's out of bullets, thought Ann. She quickly pointed her gun at him and didn't hesitate in firing at him.

He fell back, dead.

Ann smiled and started walking to the truck. There was no time to waste. She needed to get the box quickly and vanish. For she knew the police would have been on their way to the place after all the loud gunshots being made at so ungodly an hour.

And she was right.

Chapter 16

Ann watched the twenty five police-men closely as they moved nearer. They were armed with different kinds of guns that could send you running for the hills if you were the coward type.

'Young lady in mask,' boomed a funny looking policeman as he moved closer to her, dangling a pair of handcuffs. 'You are hereby arrested for overspeeding and a suspect in a recent murder.'

Ann stared at him as he proceeded to put the handcuffs on her wrists. Oh, it hit her. Her car! Why was she making mistakes for God's sake? She groaned. Well, she thought, there was no way they were going to get her that very day. And she meant it.

She snatched the handcuffs from the man's hand and banged it on his head. He fell to the ground. Then she whirled round and smashed the cuffs in the face of the police man nearest to her. He yelled and held his face, gradually going to the ground.

The police men drew back and pointed their guns at her, cocking sounds made rapidly. Ann started to raise her hands and made a show to kneel down. The guns of the police men followed suit, pointing at her. Ann knelt on the wet ground and started making some plans.

'well, well. Law enforcement guys, do you mean to arrest me?' she cooed belligerently.

'Of course, devil. Or why would we ambush you?' a man asked as he popped out from the circle of cops.

Ann recognised him, he was the guy she knocked out at Chief Martins' house. She looked at him with regret. She should have killed him back then.

'Do you remember me?' he asked as he came more closer.

¤¤¤

Desmond knew it was her. The very lady that knocked him out that fateful day. The same lady that killed the Chief, he knew. The lady that killed his darling Sandra. At that very moment, he felt like pumping his bullets in her devilish body. And enjoy the sweet sensation of revenge for a loved one. But he knew it wasn't legal for him to kill her. At least, she was no more pulling off a resistance. The two guys she attacked had stood up and were nursing their wounds. What justifications has he to kill her? With many witnesses around? No, he dare not.

He watched her masked face, the face of the devil that killed his Sandra, as she knelt on the wet road. At least, justice was here so fast. What a powerful Karma, he thought.

'well, well. Law enforcement guys, do you mean to arrest me?' he heard her ask.

Popping out from the crowd of policemen, he thought about the silly question she just asked. The nerve of her, he thought, to ask the question after the offences she had committed. He wanted to say another thing, but what came out was, 'Of course. Or why would we ambush you?'

He moved closer to her, although warily. He saw her staring at him with a hateful intensity. She must be regretting why she didn't kill him then. A costly mistake you made, he thought.

He said, 'Do you remember me?' and watched her reaction. She was now chuckling. Was it not long ago she was glaring at him? He marvelled at her ability to switch moods so easily.

'Why not? I do!' she said, somehow mysteriously.

¤¤¤

'why not? I do,' said Ann as she looked round. The cops were now distracted. Perfect! She silently exclaimed as she eyed her right hand side.

'Well, it's too late. There is no way you are escaping to...'

Ann didn't wait for him to finish. She jumped from her kneeling posture, brushed past the dazed police officers to her right side and dashed into the thick bush beside the untarred road she had came out from.

'Get her'

'She must not escape!'

'She is a criminal'

Were the sounds coming behind Ann as she flew over logs, twigs and plants in the bush. With a corner of her eyes, she noticed two officers very close behind her. She decided to get rid of them. She ran a few metres more and then slid behind a huge baobab tree. She then watched as they came closer.

She soon heard their voices right behind her. 'How could she disappear all of a sudden?' she heard one ask.

'She couldn't have gone that far,' the other said breathlessly.

Ann popped out from behind the trunk.

'Oh, here you are,' one said as he saw her. He lunged at her.

Ann flattened her palms and banged it on the guy's chest as he came near, sending him back. She effortlessly dodged the other officer's blow, slid quickly to his back and wiped him off his feet. He fell loudly and she grabbed his rifle. She slammed the rifle on the back of the other one and he also fell. Then she banged the rifle on their heads and they were knocked out. She could hear footsteps and ruffles everywhere and started to run again.

She had been running for about twenty minutes when she suddenly came to a huge clearing. She quickly hid behind a tree when she saw a middle-aged woman, clad in wrapper and head tie, washing clothes in the river. A plan came to her head.

She sneaked behind the woman and hit the rifle on her head. The previously bending woman fell without a sound. Ann pitied the woman as she quickly removed her clothes. But she had no choice, did she? She thought as she exchanged their clothes.

¤¤¤

'You made the criminal escape, with your talks!' Carl said angrily, for the hundredth time.

'shut up! Carl, keep quiet, will you? You can't blame me. Were you not defending her moments ago?' slammed a frustrated Desmond.

'That's because I didn't knew the driver was the criminal!'

'And the more reason why you need to shut your guts, Carl!'

'You can't just be ordering me around, you know? You forgot we are both equal and both put in charge of this case?' queried Carl.

Desmond grinned sadly. 'Carl, if you don't mind, I'm going down there,' he pointed at the road.

'There's a path that leads from a river in the bush to the road. She is likely to get there afterall she was running towards that side. Let's go, she should be there by now,' he concluded and didn't wait for him to reply before running to a police vehicle and climbing into it.

The woman readjusted the folds of her wrapper, as she walked on the narrow path, a pot of water balanced on her head. She sang with abandon as she walked along the path. Birds chanted overhead as the late afternoon sun cast golden rays on the earth.

Her heart jumped to her mouth as she saw two police men coming in front of her with terrifying guns.

'Good afternoon guys,' she greeted them with a queer voice.

'Afternoon ma,' one of them greeted.

The other kept on staring at her somehow. 'Please, we are looking for a particular criminal, a lady to be precise. She fled into this bush and we've not seen her since then.'

'I saw a lady coming out from the bush, running...' she was saying. She noticed their faces lit up with curiousity.

'Where did she go?' the guy said while the other one kept on looking at her.

'She said she was thirsty and I gave her some water. She is back there now,' she jerked her thumb behind her.

'Thanks ma'am,' he said. 'You can be going.'

'Thank you,' she said and passed by them and they watched her as she disappeared in the bend ahead.

¤¤¤

'That lady is really queer,' said Desmond suspiciously.

'Come off it Des, she is just a regular native,' Carl said as they started running down the path, towards the river.

'I know. But that voice and stature... And the headtie drawn so ridiculously low...hmmm.'

'Des!' shouted Carl and Desmond kept quiet.

They came to the open arena and what their eyes fell on was a body clad in the clothes of the lady, lying still on the wet ground beside a heap of clothes. A rifle laid beside the body.

They peeled off the mask on the woman's face and Desmond gasped. It was not the lady. It then hit him, the woman they met on their way was the assassin.

'I said it... I knew it, that lady looks suspicious. My...,' and he took off running towards the path. Carl followed him.

They came to the road, there were no signs of the lady again. Desmond knew she had escaped again.

'Bloody hell!' he moaned frustratingly, throwing angry punches in the air.

Ann approached the base, breathing heavily. She had flung the pot of water away as soon as she had passed the men and had ran crazily, slowing down and running, slowing down and running to avoid room for suspicion.

She got to the front door and cautiously tried pulling the door handle downwards, it opened without an ado. Someone had truly broken in. She warily walked in, there were no changes in the arrangement of everywhere. Even the security room didn't have anything. She was very sure someone had broken in but had fled, maybe after the security voice began counting. She would need to consult the surveillance cameras.

FAST FORWARD

Ann glanced at the shot cameras in front of her base and smiled. She would need to leave that place soonest. But first, she needed to go and prepare for the mission she had tonight.

Chapter 15

Ann clutched the steering wheel hard, heart beating in excitement, head boiling with fury. Her hands navigated the wheel as she drove furiously on the road, ducking and dodging vehicles and people. Behind her, police vehicle sirens wailed, coming so much closer and closer.

Overhead, the sun flew from its seat in the sky and dashed into black, rainy clouds. The once hot weather turned cool and cloudy all of a sudden. Puffy and huge clouds danced in the sky, afterall, wasn't it time for play? In the faraway distance, thunder rumbled and the first pellets of "heavenly water" began to descend, soon giving way to a hefty downpour.

With windshield wipers rubbing over the windscreen, and the rain beating on the car like a frenzied drummer beating a talking drum, Ann sped along the road, although, now at a slower pace. Few cars passed by her, others had stopped somewhere, waiting for the rain to cease. The visibility was hazy, you could hardly see your nose if you weren't used to it. But what weather had Ann not slept or walked in, for this to scare her? She had slept in freezing snow with rain and more snow dropping on her before. Or was it the hot Arizona jungles' sun in the States where underneath she'd worked and lived, for more than six months straight with other unfortunate training kids like her right with her?

The sirens behind her had ceased, due to the sounds made by the rain and the distance now between them. She had managed to keep on going in the bad weather while the police had stopped due to the poor visibility created by the weather.

She turned to another untarred road, leading straight to a road which led to her base but had to stop abruptly when she could no more see anything in front of her. Silently, in the darkness, she pounded on the steering wheel angrily.

The rain continued falling, oblivious to her anger.

In one of the police cars,

Agent Desmond grunted as the darkness deepened. Simultaneously, the SCTV app he was trying to operate on his phone crashed again for the thousandth time. Mouthing incentives, he glanced up at the other occupants in the vehicle.

'That speed is too much to be real,' he told Carl who was beside him. 'Only someone trained to drive can drive with that crazy speed'.

'Don't be stupid, Des. The person could be a professional driver in a haste to get somewhere pretty quick and not the criminal you're talking about!' Carl retorted belligerently.

Desmond glared at Carl surreptitiously. His companion is really dumb, he thought. 'Okay, okay guy. When he wasn't a criminal, at least why didn't he stop for a while to give reasons for his speeding?'

'logic! Desmond, logic!' Carl yelled, if that could be called a yell, with the rain pounding hard on the car. 'Try to put yourself in his shoes. When you're being chased by someone, can you dare to stop for a while, not to talk of the police? He wanted to escape. Escape, the first thought that would have come to your mind if you were in his shoes!'

Desmond chuckled. 'Alright, so do you mean he can't be arrested for overspeeding? Since you've became a lawyer,' he said.

'Who told you that? I was only telling you reasons why the person might not be the criminal you're talking about,' huffed Carl.

Desmond, frustrated, turned back. Carl might be right, he knew. But he still had his suspicions about the car and its occupant. Suddenly, a thought nibbled at him. He turned to the driver.

'Boy, the vehicle was a Venza right?' he asked excitedly.

'Yes,' the driver replied.

'White in colour?'

'Desmond, what's wrong?' Carl enquired, wondering why Desmond was so excited.

'Wait please,' he said and turned back to the driver. 'Is the car white?' he asked the driver again.

'Yeah. It looked kind of new and expensive,' said the driver.

'Might you know the sex of the driver?' an agitated Desmond asked. Carl kept on staring, mouth agape.

By this time, the intensity of the rain had started decreasing and visibility was fairly good now.

'I'm not so sure,' the driver replied. 'But from the silhouette I see from afar, the driver is likely to be a female.'

'That's the assassin that attacked me at Chief Martin's house the other day,' he screamed, taking others aback. 'Carl, listen to me for once in your life! Reach out to the NASCAO and describe the car to them, so they can tell us its current location. The person should be stucked somewhere now!'

'And Mr Driver, kick start the car and let's fall to the chase. We must end this once and for all!'

With Carl on the phone, the driver set fire on the car and sped off. Other police cars followed suit.

¤¤¤

The car nosed its way forward under the now drizzling rain. Running waters gurgled and flowed by the side of the road.

Ann was sure that by now, the police was back on her trail. She was happy she was now far from their reach.

She arrived at the river where there was a bridge she would pass over. But instead of a bridge, what she saw was a huge water body full of crumbled bricks and rods. The bridge had collapsed.

Ann's head flew off and she rained curses on the bridge. 'Why must it collapse today, of all days?' she asked angrily.

She had no options than to turn back to the main road and then follow the long road to her street. She silently hoped she wouldn't meet the police at the main road, she wanted to be at home quick. She turned the car and started going back to the main road.

Her car had hardly reached the road when police vehicles came from all directions. It was a perfect ambush. The men jumped down from the car and started coming to her.

The surveillance cameras! They had monitored her with the cameras, she knew. That's why she needed helping hands, she thought. A helping hand could have been working at the cameras at home, blocking and deleting the footages capturing her, and preventing intruders from entering the base like now. She made a mental note to start making preparations to get helping hands when she overcame this.

And with a slight smile, she adjusted her mask, opened the car door and got down.

About twenty five police men closed in on her.

Let's see if Ann will be able to overcome twenty five police men.
