Education / Is It Easy To Be Successful As A Writer In Nigeria? by cabsco(m): 2:42pm On Apr 06, 2023
Writing is considered a profession in most part of the world and is one of the things that little children grow up to learn to do.

It is a skill that is considered crucial in the educational institutions, which shows how important it is to every life irrespective of age and nationality.

The early form of writing is characterized by different things when compared to the modern way of writing. Today, we have electronics that aim to improve writing through technology, which has become very common in the past few years.

From Apple's iPad to Samsung Galaxy Tab, these gadgets have helped improve the way of communication through writing by introducing proprietary softwares and peripherals (such as stylus) that make it comfortable to note anything down without hassle.

Indeed, technology has greatly changed how we write and how we pen our ideas down.

Writing, as a profession, has become a booming business where a lot of money can be earned just by taking note on various topics and selling it to the highest bidder.

We have different types of writer, such as "creative writer" and "technical writer", that does the job in providing reliable information to the public in written form. These set of writer can also be regarded as content creator, since they're creating value through writing.

Being a writer is a dignifying job, but what does it mean to average Nigerians?

While there are writers in Nigeria (such as myself) that took writing as a profession, it is gradually becoming hard to come across a Nigerian that completely embrace writing as a mean to survive.

In this part of the world, writing to live is no longer what it used to be. There are various drawbacks that made it hard as a Nigerian to earn a decent living as a writer offline and online.

Some of these drawbacks have a lot to do with having proper education and tools required to make success.

Also, there are restrictions in place in most international firms and organizations that made it hard to have good-paying clients outside the country.

I'll really like to dive into these problems and highlight them one by one, but before I do that, there is one important thing I'll like to say.

Nigeria, the heartbeat of Africa, is one of the top countries in Africa that has the highest ratio of literacy. The data released by GlobalData shows that 77.62% of Nigerians are literate as at 2021.

This means an average Nigerian can read and write. This means an average Nigerian is educated.

Writing is a skill for educated folks, hence the reason why it can be taken as a profession. However, there are requirements you need to meet before you can be considered a professional writer.

And do have this in mind, the more professional you are the more money you'll earn.

Now, let me take us through some of the limitations that make it really hard to be successful as a writer in Nigeria.

The following reasons made it hard to be successful as a Nigerian writer:

Proper Education

Like I said earlier, having good education is important. You must have extensive knowledge on the topic you want to cover, and that means learning about it. The ability to write articles about various subjects in clarity and in detailed manner comes from proper learning.

Although Nigeria literacy rate is high, its educational facilities and institutions are not up to standard compared to others around the world. There is also the language barrier—most of its citizens speak in their mother tongues.

These all affect the proper use of word to convey a message in its true form, thereby affecting how a writer tailored his writing. A Nigerian that does not have proper education will find it difficult to make a living through writing.

Ability to Research

While having the knowledge about the topic you want to write about is crucial, sometimes, you may need more than you know to be able to accurately pass your message across in your writings. No man know everything.

The need for doing a research is unavoidable, especially when you need to present facts and figures to back up your claim. The internet made this easy to do - a quick look into Google Search is enough to provide you the information you seek.

However, over the years, I've learnt that most Nigerian writers are poor researchers. They hardly make references in their articles, which can negatively impact how professionals rate their work for pay.

You must be able to prove what you write, and this can only be done by providing references in your articles. This helps improve the trustworthy score of the content, turning your article into a reliable source for others.

Pitching Online Platform to Showcase Work

Most Nigerian freelance writers did not set-up online platform, such as personal website, where they can attend to clients, showcase their skills, and monetize their work, like most foreign writers do.

Having a personal or a portfolio website can help you get more clients to work for, and to also showcase your best work as a bait to attract more.

Pitching a web platform and setting it all up cost little these days - this can sometimes distinguish an amateur from a professional. To become a source of information, you must have a platform where all other sources lead to.

It may take time to set things up, but the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages, which most Nigerian writers don't think about.

Other reasons that impact success:

Lack of constant electricity: You need electricity to power your smartphone, laptop, and other gadgets that you use in creating content.

Inability to afford tools that can help: For instance, Grammarly is a requisite tool for writers, but not everyone can afford it.

Limited payment option: Getting paid by foreign clients can be breathtaking since there are only few payment gateway that let you receive money outside Nigeria.

While these all affect Nigerians that chose writing as their profession, there are still some that are doing fine. It takes courage and determination to work in this career path and to earn something decent from it.

In conclusion, it is not easy to be successful as a writer in Nigeria because of various limitations, some of which I have discussed. However, if you are confident in yourself about it and you have passion for it, go for it.

Up to this very moment, Farmsby has refused to pay. They have deleted their Facebook Fan page, but their website (farmsby.com) is still active.

Let's see and wait for what tomorrow will bring for them and their family.

Below are the screenshot of our conversation on WhatsApp.

As some advised on the thread, I won't pursue the matter anymore.

Not because I don't have the strength or power to do so (I work full time online since 2010 and I know how I can make them trend and get lots of attention), but I leave them to God.

I'll let their conscience be the judge, if they have one.

I know they are watching this thread.

God will be the judge and I know his judgment is always right.

Sir, it is this kind of notion that makes criminals and scammers common in our society today. It is what gives them the power to do what they are doing.

When these men do evil, why shouldn't people (collectively) make them dance to the tune of shame?

I won't let this matter sleep until they voice out

The longer it takes for them the hotter it will be for them, not only on this platform.

I'm an influencer and it seem they need a lot of attention.

I called their number this morning (08065032176) and they hanged up... I called twice they didn't picked it. Then I called their second number (08081545236), the person too did not picked it.

It pained me to my marrow

After wasting several call credits begging them to pay for more than three weeks, they now begin to treat me like scrap.

On top of my own money

Some people can make a devil out of an angel

Why should these people walk free knowing fully well their responsibility immediately they decided to create a company.

Why venture into what you cannot sustain? Discipline, transparency and accountability matters in any line of business.

Why would they collect peoples hard-earned money when they know they cannot pay it back?

I've called their two numbers several times in the past three weeks, sometimes they answer it sometimes they don't.

I pleaded that I needed the money for something important, but they simply ignored.

I have asked several times when they intend to pay the money but they gave me no response.

We are all hustlers...

This is evil!

Why should people do this and go scot free?

What pained me most is them refusing to pick my calls and ignoring my messages. All I'm asking them is when will they pay the money.

Why do people have to act like that and not see the repercussion

Why not pay a visit to the physical address they have on the website?

I'm not living nearby. I'm in Ibadan, they are in Port Harcourt (at least that's the address they claimed on their website).

For the past four weeks I've been trying to get the money I invested on Farmsby Limited (farmsby.com), all to no avail. I went for their standard investment by investing #10,000 in late July and #20,000 in the first week of August on the said platform, and I made a withdrawal request in the first week of October, but up till now they are yet to pay.

Since then it's been total blackout from the said company. I contacted them through the numbers posted on their website (farmsby.com), but it has been one story upon another. I've made several calls asking them to tell me when they intend to pay my money but up to the present moment they've refused to say.

On WhatsApp, they keep asking for my name and email, which I gave them not once or twice, but still nothing to show for it. Now they are no longer picking my calls and replying my messages.

I have the names of those that are involved in the scam and I'm thinking about what to do to them. But first, I'll like some suggestions from you guys. I also want to know If there is anyone facing the same crisis with these scammers.

Here are their support lines

1. 08081545236
2. 08065032176

The picture and the names of the people involved are in the picture below.

Farmby has proved incompetent.

Last year I invested N500k and wanted to bail before swt date, they warded me off with the talk that I could lose 40% of my invested principal. Now that the due date is here they are telling that there would be delay in payment.

I am currently looking for their management team to arrest.

Suspects are Aquila Carabor, Michael Azuzia, etc.

Anyone who knows their whereabout please help

Facing the same problem at the moment. They're not picking calls and most of the time their numbers are switched off. Don't know what's going on with them.

I've withdrawn twice without any issue on their platform, but the withdrawals I've made since last week have not been paid till this very moment. No reason was given, and they've stopped picking my calls.

Have you settled your case with them?
Phones / Storage: The Most Underrated Specs By Smartphone Users by cabsco(m): 12:38pm On Sep 01, 2020
One of the specs that is mostly overlooked by smartphone users is the storage (ROM). The display, processor, RAM, camera, and battery are most highly regarded while the storage is underrated. What most users do not know is that the storage held most of the information that are processed on a device. The storage serve as the reservoir of data and information that are processed in every activities. Also, the operating system and the system files are harbored inside the storage, and the specs of the storage affect their performance.

Xiaomi rarely use cheap outdated hardware in their mobile phones irrespective of the price - hence the reason for their success. Moreover, they offer timely updates, something you can't expect from other brands that are competing within the same low - mid range market.

Phones / Does Xiaomi Smartphones Offer Better Value For Money? by cabsco(m): 8:58am On Jun 02, 2020
Xiaomi is one of the brands that have succeeded in capturing a lot of market share within a short period of time with their mobile phones. Xiaomi is not quite new considering the fact that it was established in 2010, but the tech-focus company is one of the companies that struggled to make a solid establishment in the global market compared to other major brands like Samsung and Sony. It is a Chinese company that initially focus on China market, by producing and marketing its tech products exclusively in China.

But as time goes by, it widened its range of operation by expanding to other Asia market, including India, and later to Europe and South America. In 2015, the firm announced its entering into the Africa market with the launch of Redmi 2 and Mi 4 in South Africa. Fast forward to 2020, Xiaomi has now become a recognized brand in most of the African countries, including in Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana. It's also dominating India and some part of the European markets - thanks to their cheap Android phones.

But the question remains, does their phones offer better value for money?

Phones / [android] How To Download Videos On Facebook Lite by cabsco(m): 11:37am On Dec 08, 2016
Facebook launched Lite in few Africa and Asia countries in early 2015 and from there the app was expanded to many other regions. Facebook Lite is light in size and doesn't consumes data like the main app. Apart from these, it also runs well on poor network and smoothly on 2G (GPRS/EDGE) connection. After it was launched, many new features were added among which was the ability to watch video shared, posted, and that are visible on timeline. However, Facebook did not give users the ability to download the videos.

So far, there isn't any "official" way of downloading videos on Facebook Lite, however, I found a simple way to make this work on any Android device. No app is needed, root is not needed, Infact it requires nothing to download videos on Facebook Lite with the process am about to share.

Here is a hint: When we watch videos on Facebook Lite, the videos are cached (or downloaded) to a hidden folder on the phone storage, by locating this folder we can get our hands on video we watched on Facebook. All the videos.

How to Change, Customize Tecno, Infinix Android Phones Status Bar without ROOT

Android dominate almost 75% of smartphone markets, currently topping the line globally. Not because of its flexibility, but mainly because of its compatibility and all-round customizations that it offers which other mobile operating system platforms lacks. In Nigeria today, almost 35% of BlackBerry users still use Android smartphone, and things even get nastier with introduction of cheap mud-priced Android devices.

I can foretell that 80% of those who will view this post are viewing it from an Android device (really?). But despite the ability to tune pre-installed interface, menu, and settings to dance to our own imagination which is made possible by ROOT, some are still having difficulty in getting the best out of their Android device. Not all Android are good looking on the inside, I mean the wallpapers, icons, menu buttons, fonts e.t.c and even the good looking ones becomes old and un-fascinating as times goes on. But with ROOT, all can be changed.

But some simply hate to root their phone. Mainly because it voids warranty or they find it extremely hard to just press the root button (100% fat head noobs). If you fall into this category and you hate that status bar (a.k.a notification bar) of yours, there's an app am going to introduce which you'll really like.

Android status bar is a system program that occupies the upper area of the display. Most notifications such as missed calls, text messages, alarm, and calender notice are usually display in this area. Also, battery percentage, clock and network bar are showcase there too. It is one of the most visible area in Android interface, when drawn (or open), it shows additional information and shortcuts that leads to other programs. In almost all Android phones, the status bar is an area that cannot be changed (without ROOT).

Though the title of this post says "Change and Customize Tecno, Infinix Android Phones Status Bar", the app am about to introduce works flawlessly on all Android smartphones. STATUSBAR PLUS is an app created by JMT Apps in 2012 that allows Android users to customize, change or replace their pre-installed status bar (including icons) without root access. It offers various settings and each status details can be configure to respond in a certain manner. Colors of each status bar icon (in 3D) and background can be change to user liking. It support gesture and animate when charging or when data is turn on.

Here are other features:

Enable/disable the custom status bar

Automatically enable the status bar when the device is booted

Hide/show any icon

Enable/disable clicking to drop down status bar icons

Automatically hide while in lock screen

...and lots more

You can download it from here: http://www.ccnworldtech.com/2015/03/how-to-change-remove-and-customize.html
