More than $2bn was wiped from the stock market value of smartphone maker Blackberry on Friday after financial results suggested its bid to join the personal computing revolution had hit the wall. Wall Street analysts had expected the Canadian company to produce a modest $25m (£16.4m) operating profit but instead the firm revealed a shock $169m loss and missed its sales targets. BlackBerry has spent the last 18 months evolving its handsets from email machines to internet phones capable of hosting any application from Ebay to Twitter. But the group shipped just 2.72m of its new generation Z10 and Q10 handsets in their first full quarter on sale, up from 1m last quarter. Wall Street had been expecting an already weak 3m. In total, 6.8m Blackberry handsets were shipped in the three months to the beginning of June, fewer than a year ago and well below forecasts of 8m. The news shook hopes that chief executive Thorsten Heins, who took control last year from the company's founder Mike Lazaridis, had put BlackBerry on a firmer footing against Apple and Samsung. The heavily shorted shares crashed 27% in three hours, losing every cent gained since January. "We are doing the right thing," Heins assured investors on Friday. "A transition takes time." Analysts said BlackBerry was fast running out of options. Overall revenues were up 15% on the previous quarter, but the safety net of monthly subscriptions to its business and consumer services is being whittled away – subscriber numbers fell to 72 million, from 76 million in the previous quarter. "In terms of user traction they are in crash mode," said Pierre Ferragu at asset manager AllianceBernstein. "They are getting closer and closer to the ground at an accelerating pace. You should never say never but it is probably too late for them to be acquired by anyone." Rumours that Chinese manufacturer Lenovo was interested in acquiring BlackBerry had helped lift its by a quarter since January, and its stock market value stood at $7.6bn on Thursday night. By mid-afternoon on Friday, this had fallen to $5.4bn. The financial picture was further darkened by a planned currency devaluation in Venezuela, which held back payments from BlackBerry subscribers in the country, and slashed $72m from service revenues. In its first-quarter results statement, the company said: "The smartphone market remains highly competitive, making it difficult to estimate units, revenue and levels of profitability." As a result, operating losses are expected to continue, with the company forecasting more in the second quarter. BlackBerry still has a cash cushion of $3.1bn, its biggest for three years. Recent weeks have seen executives depart in key markets. Rob Orr, promoted to UK managing director nine months ago, has left to join Samsung and Sunil Dutt, managing director of BlackBerry's sizeable Indian business, quit in March, 14 months after joining the firm. Mike Walkley, an analyst with broker Canaccord Genuity, said: "With Z10, Q10, and Q5 all shipping in the August quarter and BlackBerry still guiding to a loss we believe that is strong evidence BB10 has not turned around BlackBerry in an extremely competitive smartphone market." http://m.guardian.co.uk/technology/2013/jun/28/blackberry-shares-fall-loss |
LTE-Advanced 4G network launches in South Korea South Korea has started offering what are billed as the fastest ever 4G data speeds made available to consumers. SK Telecom says its LTE-Advanced network allows files to be downloaded at up to megabits per second. That is twice as fast as before and 10 times the rate of its 3G service. Although in practice subscribers will get a slower rate, the firm says it will still be fast enough to start offering a full-HD 1080p video streaming service from early July. It also said it would offer a group video chat service with higher video and audio quality than had been possible before. Samsung has released a special version of its Galaxy S4 handset with a new communications chip to offer access to the LTE-A system, and SK Telecom says it expects another six compatible devices to launch before the end of the year. Existing smart devices will not be able to take advantage of the speed boost, but users who do decide to upgrade will not face additional data fees. The service is initially being offered in 44 cities including the capital Seoul, and SK Telecom said it had plans to double that number in the future. Speed and capacity In the UK most of EE's 4G network currently tops out at 75Mbps. But the firm recently installed equipment in East London's Tech City business cluster to offer a service it calls "double-speed 4G", which it says can match SK Telecom's LTE-A network kit. However, limitations with the handsets it offers means the maximum theoretical speed they could access would be 100Mbps. SK Telcom press event Real-world download speeds will be slower than the 150Mbps maximum quoted by SK Telecom While speedier downloads may prove enticing to customers, one analyst said that they were only part of the picture. "I've never found someone who didn't want something faster," said Daryl Schoolar, an analyst at the telecoms consultant Ovum. "But it's not just about speed - the issue of capacity is perhaps more important. These advances allow operators to use more spectrum which means they can handle more subscribers at once. "The networks are like a highway - the more people who use them the more clogged they get. By adding the equivalent of more lanes operators ensure that subscriber speeds don't slow down as much at the busiest network times." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23071976 |

China's second female astronaut, Wang Yaping, has delivered the country's first-ever video lecture from space. Speaking to students via live video, Ms Wang used spinning tops, a ball, water and a fellow astronaut to explain physics in zero-gravity. She was speaking from the Tiangong-1 space laboratory, where the Shenzhou spacecraft is currently docked, China's fifth manned space mission, Shenzhou-10, is scheduled to end around 25 or 26 June. The crew is also expected to attempt a manual docking later on Thursday. This will involve getting back inside their Shenzhou capsule, unhooking from Tiangong and then flying around the lab to re- attach the capsule to the laboratory. 'Sixteen sunrises' Ms Yang used difference experiments to demonstrate the concepts of weight and mass in space. After showing how normal scales did not work in space, she used a special scale to measure the mass of crew commander Nie Haisheng, using Newton's second law of motion - measuring the mass of an object through force and acceleration. At another point, to show how objects move in the microgravity environment of space, she asked her colleague to help her rotate 90 degrees, and then 180 degrees, from the floor of the laboratory. Spinning tops were used to create gyroscopic motion in space, and a ball attached to a string to demonstrate pendulum motion. Towards the end of the class, Ms Yang made a film of water using a metal ring, explained by the increased surface tension of water in space. She then turned the film of water into a water ball by pouring more water onto it, to wide applause from students watching in China. Around 330 primary and secondary school students watched the lecture from a special classroom in Beijing, where they could also ask Ms Wang questions through a live video feed, state media said. In response to a student's question, Ms Yang described what she could see in space. "The stars we see are much brighter, but they do not twinkle," she said, explaining this was due to the lack of Earth's obstructing atmosphere. "The sky we see isn't blue, but black. And every day, we can see the sun rise 16 times because we circle the Earth every 90 minutes" An estimated 60 million students and teachers around China were also expected to watch the lecture live, the Ministry of Education said. http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-22981839 |

Thousands of civilians flee Nigerian military offensive against Boko Haram as new refugee crisis beckons in Africa . Thousands of people are fleeing to Chad , Niger and Cameroon as the crisis in neighbouring Nigeria deepens , the UN refugee agency has said . UNHCR officers said on Tuesday that up to 3 , 000 refugees had arrived in Cameroon amid reports of at least 6 , 000 people escaping to Niger over the past weeks as the confrontation between the Nigerian army and the Boko Haram group intensified in the country ' s northeast . " The immediate priority is to secure food and shelter as refugees are entering extremely harsh and difficult areas , " Fatou Lejeune - Kaba , Africa spokesperson for UNHCR , told Al Jazeera . Cameroon had initially closed its border with Nigeria to prevent members of Boko Haram to enter , but after June 11, the border was re- opened , the UNHCR said . With fighting only intensifying , and about 3 , 000 people arriving between June 11- 13 alone , there are concerns that this may be the start of a large exodus from the region. New arrivals The government of President Goodluck Jonathan embarked on a major military offensive on May 15 to root out the Boko Haram group responsible for a series of bloody attacks in the African country over the past four years , killing hundreds of people . A state of emergency was imposed on the Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states in a response to the rising attacks, raising concerns of human rights activists of possible violations against civilians . The UNHCR said crossings into Cameroon began a week ago, with most of the refugees being women and children . Refugees are being hosted in churches and schools , and relying on food from the local population . We are working with the authorities to relocate the refugees to safer places away from the border, away from possible fighting , Lejeune - Kaba said . Meanwhile in Niger , trucks carrying aid was dispatched from Niamey to the southeastern Diffa region, where more than 6 , 000 people have arrived from northern Nigeria in the past weeks . This includes Nigerian nationals as well as returning Niger nationals and others nationalities . Most of the new arrivals in Niger traveled on foot from rural villages across the border and from Maiduguri and Baga towns . In Chad , refugees have been arriving in small numbers , saying their homes were destroyed after the military accused them of harbouring Boko Haram fighters . Military offensive Aid organisation and media have been banned from accessing the frontlines and there have also been complaints that mobile networks were shut down since the offensive started , effectively cutting off the region from the rest of the country and the world . " The situation is not getting the attention it deserves , " Lejeune - Kaba , from the UNHCR , said . In late May , Amnesty International urged Nigerian authorities not to use the state of emergency in the north eastern regions as an excuse to commit human rights violations . Amnesty said detainees were being held without access to lawyers, or being officially charged with a crime . The human rights group also claimed that services had come to a standstill with schools closed and some towns resembling ' ghost towns'. http://m.aljazeera.com/story/2013618111147362152 |
Bayern Munich and Real Madrid stars to go on trial for paying for sex in 2008 and 2009 with prostitute , then a minor . French footballers Franck Ribery and Karim Benzema , accused of paying for sex with an underage call girl, will go on trial in Paris after being investigated for two years . Bayern Munich winger Ribery and Real Madrid striker Benzema are to stand trial on Tuesday on allegations of paying Zahia Dehar, then a minor , for sex in 2008 and 2009 . Ribery ' s lawyer , Carlo - Alberto Brusa , said his client was innocent and should not be expected to show up in court. " In French law , it ' s not forbidden to make love to a woman and even to pay her for it , what is forbidden is to do it with a minor , " he told Reuters. " When a woman travels around Europe by plane, can you imagine thinking for one second that she ' s a minor ?" Ribery has acknowledged the encounter but said he did not know she was underage , nor that she was a prostitute . He said he only gave her 200 euros for a taxi ride to the airport . The trial is expected to run until June 26 . The scandal , which exposed footballers ' tastes for flings and partying , came ahead of the 2010 World Cup , further damaging the image of a French squad already tarnished by internal bickering, public tantrums and defeats . Possible sentences Algerian - born Dehar, now 21, has since become designer Karl Lagerfeld' s muse and protegee , launching her own lingerie line. The footballers could be sentenced to up to three years in jail and fines of $ 60 , 000 if found guilty of soliciting the services of an underage prostitute . According to court documents , Dehar had been a prostitute since the age of 15 or 16 , but would tell clients she was 18 . She said she was flown in from Paris to Munich in 2009 for Ribery ' s 26 th birthday party in a luxury hotel , and that he paid her 700 euros for sex . http://m.aljazeera.com/story/201361853037503652 |
