Twelve soldiers and seven policemen were killed in recent attacks in Borno by suspected members of the Boko Haram, the commander of the military Joint Task Force (JTF), Major General Jah Ewansiah, has said. The military had last week denied that up to a dozen officers were killed in the Malumfatori attack on soldiers by the Boko Haram on August 4. The JTF spokesman had claimed in a statement that only two soldiers and a policeman were killed in the attack as well as another attack in Bama. The JTF, like the Nigerian military, is notorious for reducing or denying casualty of soldiers, security officials, and civilians in operations against insurgents and criminals. Mr. Ewansiah, however, revealed the casualty to the Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, when the latter visited the JTF headquarters on Friday to condole with the Task Force over the ugly occurrence. ‘We have lost 12 soldiers in Malumfatori and seven policemen in Bama attacks. But despite that the JTF is resolute and committed to ensure that peace is completely restored in Borno state, even if it means losing their lives,” Mr. Ewansiah said. The governor donated N1 million to the families of each of the deceased soldiers and policemen. The JTF had earlier claimed that it killed 32 Boko Haram members in the two attacks. http://mobile.saharareporters.com/news-page/boko-haram-kill-12-soldiers-7-policemen-separate-attacks-borno-says-jtf-boss-premium-times |

“YOU received free, give free.” ( Matthew 10:8 ) Jesus issued that instruction to his apostles when he sent them forth to preach the good news. Did the apostles obey this directive? Yes, and they continued to do so even after Jesus departed from the earth. For instance, when the former sorcerer Simon saw the miraculous powers possessed by the apostles Peter and John, he offered to pay them to impart that power to him. But Peter rebuked Simon, saying: “May your silver perish with you, because you thought through money to get possession of the free gift of God.”— Acts 8:18-20 . The apostle Paul displayed a spirit similar to Peter’s. Paul could have allowed himself to be a financial burden to his Christian brothers in Corinth. However, he worked with his own hands to support himself. (Acts 18:1-3 ) Thus, he could say with confidence that he had preached the good news to the Corinthians “without cost.”— 1 Corinthians 4:12; 9:18 . Sad to say, many who claim to be followers of Christ have not shown the same willingness to “give free.” Indeed, many of the religious leaders in Christendom will “instruct just for a price.” (Micah 3:11 ) Some religious leaders have even become wealthy from money collected from their flocks. In 1989, one U.S. evangelist was sentenced to a jail term of 45 years. The reason? He had been “defrauding supporters of millions of dollars and using some of the money to buy homes, cars, holidays and even an air- conditioned dog kennel.”— People’s Daily Graphic, October 7, 1989. people shine ur eye abi unu na mu amu? |

By AZOMA CHIKWE and CHRISTOPHER OJI Three gun-shot victims rushed to the Accident and Emergency Ward of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, on Monday night are in stable condition, while the fourth person died on arrival, Daily Sun learnt yesteray. The victims, three men and a pregnant woman, were allegedly shot by one Corporal Mohammed Abubakar from MOPOL 17, Akure, Ondo State at Diamond Estate, Festac Town, following a disagreement over an unconfirmed matter. It was gathered that the four victims were allegedly shot in a fast food joint by the corporal who was suspected to be drunk at the time of the incident. Eyewitnesses said the disagreement and flaring- up of tempers occurred that night at the fast food joint where noodles is the main delicacy. The angry corporal opened fire on the victims and fled. The policeman who is not attached to the Lagos Police Command, was said to be on an unofficial visit to a company in Diamond Estate. Meanwhile, when our reporter visited LUTH, the three surviving victims were being attended to by doctors who assured that they will make it. The consultants regretted the death of one of the victims, blaming his demise on the site of the bullet wound and the time of arrival of the patients to the hospital. A consultant, who spoke to Daily Sun on condition of anonymity, disclosed that of the three surviving patients, the two men will go for surgery because of the nature of wounds they sustained from the gunshot and also to retrieve bullets and pellets from their bodies. “The pregnant woman who appears to be a bit more lucky, will not need surgery, she will undergo intensive and general care and be discharged. One of the men was shot in the eye, ophatalmologists are working hard to ensure the wound does not degenerate, he will be operated soon. “The second man was shot in the thigh, he will also undergo surgery, apart from the damage done on the site of the wound, there are indications that bullet pellets lodged in the muscles must be retrieved,” he said. Confirming the incident, LUTH’s spokesperson, Mrs Hope Nwawolo, said the three victims are in stable condition and are responding to treatment. “The hospital has drafted a team of experts to ensure that they are well taken care of medically”, she said. The state Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr Umar Manko, confirmed that a police corporal from MOPOL 17, Akure, Ondo State was responsible for the shooting. “The corporal is not from the Lagos State Police Command. He is from MOPOL 17, Akure. He was attached to a company in Festac Town, but I wonder what a mobile policeman from Akure is doing in Lagos. The CP said he has asked the Area Commander for Festac area, Mr Dan Okoro, to contact his Squadron Commander to explain what the policeman from his unit was doing in that company at that time. Manko disclosed the force has declared manhunt for the corporal who took to his heels after committing the crime. Another eyewitness said that the corporal went to the fast food vendor to eat noddles when a quarrel broke out between him and other customers. The source said in the process, he fired sporadically and took to his heels. “The policeman would have been lynched by a mob, but they were afraid to go after him as he was fully armed,” the eyewitness said. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/drunk-policeman-kills-one-in-lagos/ |

At least eight people killed by suspected Boko Haram fighters in northeastern city of Maiduguri , witnesses and army say. At least eight people have been killed by suspected Boko Haram fighters in Nigeria ' s northeastern city of Maiduguri , witnesses and the army said. The attack , which occurred on Tuesday , targeted teachers and Muslim clerics, witnesses told the Associated Press new agency on Thursday. Bala Anjikui, a school teacher, said the fighters used knives to kill victims in the attack on Bui town nearly 200 km south of Maiduguri to avoid gunshots attracting soldiers . A military spokesman warned on Thursday that Boko Haram planned more " massive attacks " aimed at their stronghold in the northeastern town of Maiduguri . Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa said the attacks are plotted to coincide with Muslims marking the final week of fasting in the holy month of Ramadan. Nigeria , divided almost equally between Muslims and Christians, declared a state of emergency on May 14 to fight an Islamic uprising by fighters in the northeast who want to impose Islamic law . The insurgency poses the greatest threat in years to security in Africa ' s biggest oil producer and most populous nation of more than 160 million. Earlier on Thursday, the military congratulated themselves on the arrest of a leader of a Nigerian armed group in neighbouring Niger , saying it had foiled a plot to regroup and launch more attacks . A statement on Thursday said intelligence agents from both countries had been on the trail of the leader who was arrested on Saturday in a border area. It did not identify the leader or his group. Northeast Nigeria borders Niger and Chad and troops from all three countries have formed a joint force to try to secure hundreds of kilometers of porous borders. The statement said the arrested leader had fled the military clampdown since the state of emergency was introduced and was recruiting and training fighters in Niger to launch attacks in Nigeria . http://m.aljazeera.com/story/201381194058468813 |

The Federal Government on Wednesday appealed to parents and students of the nation's universities to bear with it in what it described as the unfortunate consequences of the closure of universities, while it worked hard to end the ongoing industrial action embarked upon by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities. Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, made the appeal while speaking with State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday. Maku said the government had resolved to end the crisis because of the damages perennial strikes had inflicted on the nation's education sector. He said the perennial disruption of academic calendar as a result of strikes had become a source of worry to the government. The minister, however, expressed the confidence that the negotiation being currently spearheaded by the Minister of Labour, Chief Emeka Wogu, and the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqqayat Rufa'i, would soon produce the desired result. He said, "The Federal Government has been far more worried than you think concerning the strike in tertiary institutions, because of the disruption of the school calendar. So, the government is concerned and very worried, and since the outset of the strike, the government has been negotiating with ASUU through the Ministry of Labour and Productivity and the Ministry of Education. "So, we are appealing to our people, particularly parents and children of this nation to bear with us; to show more understanding and we pray that this type of strike will not recur, because the public school system suffers a lot of damage with the perennial strikes." Meanwhile, ASUU said on Wednesday in Ago- Iwoye, Ogun State, that the Federal Government was financially buoyant to fund the implementation of the 2009 agreement with the union. ASUU alleged that the government had, during this year alone, been selling crude at about 150 per cent of budget price and has since January this year collected about N500bn in excess of projected revenue from tax alone. ASUU Co-ordinator in the South West, Dr. Adesola Nasir, stated this during a news conference in Ago-Iwoye on the five-week old strike by university lecturers. Nasir, who is also the Chairman of Olabisi Onabanjo University branch of ASUU, stressed that the Federal Government had the financial means to honour the agreement. He described the lingering crisis in the Nigerian university system as a reflection of the insensitivity of the Federal Government to the plight of Nigerians. The union therefore said it was embarrassing to discover that the government had denied the existence of any agreement with the university lecturers. It further stated that it was unfortunate that the progress made so far in resolving the lingering crisis over the non-implementation of the 2009 agreement, failed to match the required urgency required to arrest the decline in the country's citadel of learning. He said, "Our union had thought the government would save itself the embarrassment of being exposed as most insensitive to the plight of Nigerians. "At the first meeting called by government representatives to address the aforementioned issue, our representatives got the shocker of all time when the Secretary to the Government of the Federation expressed the denial of the existence of the Memorandum of Understanding on the annual release of N400bn for three years as intervention fund for public universities in the country." From the Ibadan Zone of ASUU, five universities on Wednesday insisted that the ongoing strike by the union would not be called off unless the Federal Government met their demands. The universities are University of Ibadan; University of Lagos; Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta; Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye; Lagos State University and Tai Solarin University of Education. The union, at a press briefing in LASU on Wednesday, also faulted universities that conducted Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations, despite the ongoing strike. Some of the universities that have written their Post-UTME are Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife; University of Ilorin, University of Lagos, Lagos State University and University of Nigeria, Nsuka, among others. Zonal Coordinator, Ibadan Zone of ASUU, Dr. Adesola Nasir, explained that the union embarked on the strike to protest against the decline in the universities in terms of teaching, research, facilities, including students' accommodation. http://mobile.punchng.com/output.php?link=http://www.punchng.com/news/fg-begs-parents-students-over-ASUU-strike/ |
