FG Yet To Reach An Agreement With ASUU, To Continue Ninth Negotiation on Monday 28th.

In an interview with Daily Trust, the National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, says lecturers are yet to reach a resolution with the Federal Government on their demand.
He further said FG has called for another negotiation on Monday 28th January.

In his words, "There was no agreement so we didn’t reject any deal reached with the government. What they gave us at the last meeting was a proposal of our demands. Proposals are not the same thing as agreement. They gave us a proposal and we said we will take the proposal back to our members. What we have been doing in the last one week was to consult with our members and we still convey the report of our consultation to the Ministry of Labour and Employment. Now they are saying we will meet on Monday (last) to discuss the positions".

There's no more result to wait for.
They have made their speech today

And the jan 8 speech, yes they are holding on to it again today.

ASUU-NEC : Members should await further developments before resumption

From what appears to be the decision of ASUU National Executive Council NEC, The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has asked its members to wait for further development in its dialogue to end the ongoing nationwide strike.

This is following a previous notice from ASUU President Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, assuring to get back to the Public today after its NEC meeting.

The Union has now said the offer from the Federal Government towards resolving the demands of ASUU was still far from expectations.

“Though, some progress has been made with respect to discussion with Government agents (The Minister of Labour and Employment as well as Minister of Education) at the moment, the proposal from Government towards resolving the demand of ASUU, as contained in 2017 MoA and Strike Bulletin 1, is still too fluid and far from expectations.

“Hence, it is the view of the NSCC that members should await further developments which are rapidly unfolding.

“In accordance with the ASUU’s long standing position, ASUU as a Union will not participate in the conduct of 2019 general elections, although members may voluntarily participate in the conduct of the elections.

“However, members are prohibited from participating in the election processes using any material that bears ASUU or relates to the Union.” ASUU President Concluded.

Fire razes IMSU faculty, destroys documents, equipment worth millions
#campuscatchofficial

The Imo State University, Owerri, experienced a fire outbreak in the early hours of today (thursday). The fire razed the institution’s Faculty of Humanities.

Campus Catch learnt that the fire destroyed documents and academic equipment worth millions of Naira.

A student of the university, Justice Okorie said that the fire started around 3am and it affected almost all the lecturers’ offices in the faculty.

Okorie also said that computer offices of various departments in the faculty and libraries were destroyed.

“A fire outbreak has destroyed the Humanities Faculty Annex of our school. It started by 3am and before help could be rendered, equipment and valuable documents have been destroyed,” Okorie said.

“Documents were lost in offices that include those of the Dean of the Faculty. We pray the incident does not affect our academic programme,” the student added.

When contacted, the IMSU Public Relations Officer, Obi Njoku, said that much damage had been done before fire fighters arrived.

Njoku, who said that he could not readily estimate the value of property lost to the fire, said that the school’s management would convene to plan the next line of action.

ASUU is not straightforward - Campus Catch

Reacting to a statement made by ASUU today that it denies having any agreement with FG over the ongoing strike in the last meeting held on Monday, Campus Catch has described the ASUU leadership as not straightforward and Selfish.

Some persons have believed ASUU is just trying to clear the air that it has not reached a FULL agreement with FG as rumoured.

That claim is true.. But Recall that ASUU and FG had their previous negotiation on Monday which the outcome was made public that a good part of the demand had been met and ASUU would get back to the Public after its NEC meeting.

Observing the U-turn sign that ASUU is showing today, Campus Catch is wondering why ASUU did not reject the part funds that FG offered so we'll know the strike is still very active.
Why accepting money, going to Twitter to create a voting poll and coming to tell the Public that FG hasn't met their demand thereby creating more uneasiness in the heart of students?
Be straightforward And stop being SELFISH.
You ought not to delay the NEC meeting.
Students are waiting to resume? Stop playing around with people's future and have some sense of sympathy.

Nevertheless, Campus Catch urge the students community to wait and see what tomorrow will bring.

If ASUU meets with its NEC, we will hear results.

The National Association of Nigerian Students NANS has suspended its planned Nationwide protest.
It was released this evening in a press statement by the Association's President Comrade Akpan Bamidele.

Part of the Statement reads:
"Consequent upon our NANS meeting, with president Buhari, he directed TETFUND to release funds to tertiary institutions and further instructed the Federal Ministry of Education/Labour to immediately resume negotiation with ASUU. This brought about the meeting with ASUU yesterday 7th January where for the first time ASUU and FG reached a compromise.
"To this extent, NANS is happy that the two weeks ultimatum/invitation by the president have started yielding visible results which of course is to the advantage of our suffering members and our parents.
"None of the issues raised by ASUU is of interest to the students and undoubtedly, the striking unions and their members will always get paid for periods out Tertiary institutions were locked while students got no reward.
"We therefore urge the general public to know that ASUU do not pursue our collective interest as they claim.
Finally, we hereby suspend our proposed mass action to enable both FG and ASUU resolve and open our campuses immediately."

JUST IN- ASUU | FG withdraws ‘no work no pay’ threat | Set New Date for Negotiation
--------------------------------------------------------------------
There's room for hope as Federal Government has just withdrawn the recent threat to activate the ‘no work no pay policy’ against striking university teachers.

This was disclosed to Vanguard yesterday by the National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi.

Ogunyemi also said that the negotiation meeting between ASUU and the Federal Government would continue tomorrow, stressing that what the union was doing was to rescue the education sector from imminent collapse and to ensure that the children of the poor get access to quality and affordable education.

The ASUU boss also said that last Friday’s meeting between the two parties did not yield much results.

He said: “Well, we have confirmed that they have withdrawn that threat (no work no pay). So it appears the threat is not there for now. But even if the threat is there, we are prepared for that because for our members, no sacrifice is too much to salvage Nigeria’s education.

Matters Get worse as the Federal Government has just directed Vice Chancellors of the striking public universities and inter-varsity centers, to enforce no-work-no-pay rule on striking lecturers.

This directive was said to have been communicated to the universities in a memo sent by the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) through the University Vice Chancellors.

The Memo which was signed this evening by Director, Research, Information and Technology, NUC, Dr S.B Ramon-Yusuf, stated that payment of salaries from any other sources will be viewed as violation of extant rules and Government directive.

It's obvious that both FG and ASUU are not ready to agree anytime soon.
