Education / Stop Dreaming, Strike Won’t Be Suspended, Says Senior Lecturer (details) by campuscatch: 12:09pm On Oct 13, 2022
Stop dreaming, strike won’t be suspended - Senior lecturer tells 'happy' Nigerian students, gives reasons.

“You are weird if you think schools will resume,” Dr. Garvey Ufot, a senior Nigerian lecturer has passed a strong warning to Nigerian university students who are super-excited and those hoping that the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) would end very soon.

The senior lecturer who is a profound scholar passed this strong message, with reasons, on Wednesday when different ASUU branches were holding their congresses nationwide.
According to him, the strike is far from over.

In his words, while responding to a UNIUYO student who was applauding ASUU and the Nigerian government for reaching an agreement, the lecturer wrote:

"And who told you that you’re going back to school anytime soon. This is delusional wishful thinking of the worst sort.

“I’ve just returned from ASUU Congress meeting, and unless there’s a miracle, or the national Executives of ASUU decide to go it alone, this strike is not likely to be suspended anytime soon.

“Most of you, including students who are supposed to know better but refuse to be intelligent, are responding to, and salivating on, a fake and illiterate online report about the strike being suspended on Monday, next week, when ASUU Congresses are just meeting to deliberate on the progress so far only to be told that President Buhari has, contrary to what the Speaker of the House of Reps, Femi Gbajabiamila, said would happen by yesterday, Tuesday, not responded to the agreement he cobbled together with ASUU.

“You guys are just weird if you think school will resume and lecturers will attend to any student without their seven months salaries. Grow up, guys, grow up. There will be no resumption until Buhari is ready to act responsibly.
“Even the principal officers of our universities, namely, the VC, Registrar, Bursar and Librarian have not been receiving their salaries since February despite the fact that they have been working since then.

“So how will the Senate of any university meet to work out any specific resumption date and the calendar of the remainder of the semester? But having said that, I can also tell you that the strike might be suspended even tomorrow if tonight, Buhari approves the agreement that the speaker has reached with ASUU.”
-----
Dr. Garvey Ufot is currently a Senior lecturer at the Department of English Studies, University of Uyo. He is also connected with a lecturing job at Federal University Oye-Ekiti, (FUOYE) Ekiti State, Nigeria.
He was a former lecturer at the University of Ado-Ekiti.
He studied English language at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in Kaduna State, Nigeria.

Education / Outcome Of FG-ASUU Meeting Today: Fresh Negotiations To Hold Next Week | Details by campuscatch: 9:12pm On Sep 29, 2022
#NEW: Outcome from FG-ASUU meeting Today

Strike: House leadership to dialogue with Buhari over ASUU demands next week, says Gbajabiamila

The leadership of the House of Representatives will seek an audience with President Muhammadu Buhari on the resolution of the ongoing face-off between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) with the outcome of its interactions with stakeholders in the dispute, Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila said on Thursday.

This is as the office of the Accountant General of the Federation (AOGF) revealed its readiness to accommodate issues of concern to ASUU over the payment platforms, Integrated Payroll Personnel Information System (IPPIS) and the University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) that constituted a major part of the issues that led to the strike.

According to the Speaker, the leadership, in the next couple of days, will put up a report of its interactions with key stakeholders in the dispute and come up with recommendations that will enable the President to view the issues at stake from an informed second option.

Speaking at the last meeting of the House leadership with stakeholders, Gbajabiamila said the information gathered from the extensive interactions would assist the leadership in arriving at fact-based recommendations for the resolution of the crisis.

Those in attendance included the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha; the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Sen Chris Ngige; Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Folashade Yemi-Esan; the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), Mr. Sylva Okolieaboh; the Director General of the Budget Office of the Federation, Ben Akabueze; the Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa, represented; as well as the Chairman, National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, Ekpo Nta among others. Also present was the delegation from ASUU led by its president, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke.

Saying that the interest of the children that had been at the receiving end of the trade dispute should be paramount, Gbajabiamila appealed to both sides to give in and make concessions from their initial demands.

He said: "We will put together our recommendations and our thoughts and take it to Mr. President, that’s why we are here to interface and look for solutions.

“Again let me repeat, we are running a government, nobody, no individual, no group, whether you are legislative, judiciary or whatever can be above the government, can be above the law.

"We can’t be against and I’m speaking specifically to ASUU, we did not say because the court has given judgment, that’s the end of our conversation. In spite of the court judgment, we are still looking for solutions, we didn’t even address it here, I don’t want to address it.

“Otherwise, we could’ve said, if government has given judgment, I don’t know if there’s a stay of execution, I don’t know.

"We are appealing to you, the Judiciary has spoken, the Executive has spoken, the Legislature is about to speak together with the Executive; everybody cannot be wrong and only one person is right. For me I’m happy with the solution on UTAS, no victor, no vanquished, everybody is being carried along.

“for the sake of emphasis, the House is pleading with you, let’s put all interest aside and look at the interest of our children.

“The white paper we told you we’ll get, the letter is here, it’s now waiting for the President’s final approval.

“On revitalization, I asked the DG budget here if provision has been made in the budget. We made a promise to you, and we are staying by that promise.

"Regarding the issue of UTAS, you said you haven’t seen the report; we have it here, so we’ve been working for you".

During the interactions, following questions from the Speaker, the AGF, Okolieaboh revealed that his office was ready to accommodate issues of concern to ASUU over salary payment if that would bring the crisis to an end.

While the Director General of the NITDA, also disclosed the readiness of the agency to continue the integrity test on the payment platforms.

Following complaints of the federal government's attempt to strip the Universities Governing Council of its administrative power through the deployment of the IPPIS, the Head of Service, Yemi-Esan allayed the fears of the striking lecturers that the government would not take away the responsibilities of the Governing Council of Universities in the administration of the schools.

Speaker Gbajabiamila assured the striking lectures that the House leadership would invite the ASUU leadership following the outcome of the meeting with the President as soon as it was held.

“When we make our recommendations, we are going to meet with Mr. President and interface on your behalf”, he assured them.

President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof Emmanuel Osedeke has reacted to the directive by the Ministry of Education through the Nigeria Universities Commission, asking all Vice Chancellors and striking lecturers to resume immediately.

He sarcastically told the VANGUARD when he was contacted, that his members are not holding the keys to the campuses.

Comrade Osedeke also pointed out that the Ministry should stop the trick of distractions and allow both of them settle the case in court since it was the government who dragged them to court in the place.

Breaking: Court Orders ASUU To Call Off Strike Immediately

At this point, ASUU does not have any choice but suspend the ongoing strike and resume lectures.

The National Industrial Court has ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), to call off the ongoing Strike.

Delivering a ruling on the interlocutory injunction filed by the Federal government, Justice Polycarp Hamman restrained ASUU from continuing with the industrial action pending the determination of the suit.

Justice Hamman who is a vacation judge ordered that the case filed should be returned to the president of the Industrial Court for reassignment to another judge.

The Judge further held that the industrial action is detrimental to public university students who cannot afford to attend private tertiary institutions.

He said the Trade Dispute Act mandates workers not to embark on strike once an issue has been referred to the industrial court.
Justice Hamman also upheld the application of the Federal Government saying it was meritorious and granted.

The court therefore restrained “ASUU, whether by themselves, members, agents, privies or howsoever called, from taking further steps and doing any act in continuance of the strike action pending the hearing and determination of the suit filed.”

The judge refused to fine the federal government as demanded by ASUU.

campuscatch:
Four Reasons Why The Current 2022 ASUU Strike Will Last Longer Than Every Other Strike:
... by Mahbubat Kanyinsola Salahudeen | © Campus Catch NG

Since Nigeria's return to democracy in 1999, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is on its 16th strike, shutting down academic activities in Universities for more than a cumulative period of 4 years in 23 years, leading to constant disruption of the academic calendar and much to the frustration and disappointment of students on the inability of the academic union and the Federal government to settling their differences. As for 2022, come August 14 will be exactly 6 months since ASUU has called its members across federal universities out of their duty posts. Gates of federal universities across the country have remained shut and there seems to be no sign of university undergraduates returning to classes anytime soon.

The strike which commenced on February 14, 2022, about 5 months and 20 days seems to be unending despite several meetings, consultations, and negotiations between the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Federal government, which have yielded no results.
With helpless students idle away, parents worrying, campus businesses gone, government unperturbed, and wealthy parents flaunting pictures of graduating students abroad it's more likely than not that this strike period will go on for a longer time. Here are four reasons the current 2022 ASUU strike will last longer than every other strike;
1. Only recently the Federal Government informed the Academic Staff Union of Universities that "There is no money, Nigeria is broke" only for the president to approve the purchase and donation of 1.4 billion Naira worth of 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser V8 to the Niger Republic in August 2022 as an attempt to help the country's capacity to protect its citizens. This came after the federal government donated $1 million to Afghanistan's Taliban government in March 2022, less than a month after the commencement of the strike. While the decision provoked outrage across the country, this is just one of the many shreds of evidence that the Federal government is unperturbed about the crisis in the educational sector.

2. The Academic Staff Union of Universities has made it clear that this is a roll-over strike, meaning the strike action will continue until the federal government meets its list of demands. In July, much to the disappointment of university students, the National President of the Union asked undergraduates to be patient while adding that "Two years isn't too much to sacrifice". The statement is a clear indication that the union won't back off anytime soon. The ongoing strike has done more harm than good to undergraduates across federal universities with many losing hope in education. It is common knowledge that it took some of them years to gain admission because of the problem of oversubscription in public universities and other factors like the quota system. By the time some of them leave school (those who eventually do, because some may never go back) finding a job may be difficult.

3. While there have been 16 strike actions since Nigeria's return to democracy, the results are always the same. The union embarked on a 6 months strike in 2013, a week strike in 2014, in 2017 it went on another strike that lasted 36 days, and in 2020 it went on a 9 months strike. The list of strikes is endless. Yet the reason behind the unceasing strike actions are still there and remain unchanged. ASUU keeps making reference to a certain 2009 agreement anytime it embarks on a strike. It also refers to a 2001 agreement that gave birth to the 2009 agreement. While we may not be able to provide details of these agreements, there are certain recurrent issues in the Union's agitation some of which include; the revitalisation of public universities, earned academic allowances, funding, autonomy, and recent, the demand for the University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) as a replacement for the Integrated Payroll and Personnel information system (IPPIS).

4. Furthermore; despite continuous agitation by concerned students, the forthcoming 2023 elections seem more important as the federal government appears unperturbed, with stories about PVC registration in the everyday news. Back in April, the prices of nomination forms for the forthcoming elections got Nigerians especially the youth enraged after it was revealed that one nomination forms cost more than 10 million Naira and the presidential nomination form for APC cost 100 million Naira. The federal government might have as well met the Academic Staff Union of Universities' demands with these amounts. We will have you know the prices is also an indication that youths aspiring to hold political positions have close to no chance of succeeding.
It is stale news, however, that the Academic Staff Union of Universities does not intend to stop the ongoing strike until the government meets their demands, this means the academic lives of thousands of undergraduates could be up in the air. Strike actions by ASUU have always been an issue of great concern since 1999 and have caused students to spend more time away from classes than the statutory duration in school and this, unfortunately, is a contributing factor to the increasing crimes in the country as many youths resort to illegal means to attain wealth thereby compromising their future.

Strike actions are a detriment to any country's economy and Nigeria isn't immune to this. In an estimate, ASUU has spent no less than 1500 days on strike. Nigerians must take strident steps to ensure the commencement of academic activities in Nigerian public universities, and this begins with meeting the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

With helpless students idle away, parents worrying, campus businesses gone, government unperturbed, and wealthy parents flaunting pictures of graduating students abroad it's more likely than not that this strike period will go on for a longer time. Here are four reasons the current 2022 ASUU strike will last longer than every other strike;

Secondly:

This is the reason why I am now completely tired of ASUU.

They want their six months salaries to be paid but will they restore all the years they have wasted for me because of their incessant strikes?

ASUU says they are ready to go back to complete the delayed semesters, and therefore should be entitled to the 6 months salaries
