Microsoft is not relently on its efforts to kill of  the opposition.

I have just read about the romance between Eclipse and Microsoft here http://www.regdeveloper.co.uk/2008/03/19/microsoft_eclipse_swt_project_wpf/
Programming › Re: Shouldn't There Be A "software Engineering" Section In Nairaland Forums? by candylips(m): 12:47pm On Mar 28, 2008
CMM is useless. I did the PSP (Personal Software Process) course admisitered by CMU .

This whole Software Engineering thing does not have any value in todays business. It is just a way of adding another level of beaurucracy into the process. I mean the PSP course and CMM is the most ridiculus thing i have ever come across .

Personally i think building software should be solely about satisfying what the customer wants . This can only be done by constantly presenting unfinished work to the customer as often as possible to get their approval or disaproval.

A software project is not going to succeed if you have a CMM level 5 or if you have a superior method of gathering sofware metrics for your organization or is it going to succeed if you do not present what you are building to the customer as often as possible.

I have worked and seen projects fail in companies where the these approaches was adopted .

The very best appraoch to software development is the Agile approcah

I have used Java for some odd years now and i love it. But i really like the .Net platform as well from my little experients. GUI development is so straightfoward
Programming › Re: Programmers With Experience by candylips(m): 12:12pm On Mar 28, 2008
I want to disagree with a few comments here.

firstly. Being a lazy developer is actually a very good trait of an above average - expert developer. I am disagreeing on the basis of not reinventing the wheel.

For example

Should i write my own Quick sort algorithm or should i just use Arrays.sort ?
Even the Arrays.sort method in Java which was implemented by Josh Bloch was actually an implementation from the book "Engineering a Sort Function"

Should i implement a new MVC pattern for a web project am working on or should i just use Struts or Winforms ?

etc.

The idea here is that code that is in public domain would probably have been better tested by a community of users than code you have written and tested yourself

The fundamental distinction here is that there are basically two classes of developers.

There are Framework Developers and there are Application Developers.

If you are an application developer it is your duty to combine different frameworks into a workable application in the shortest possible time. That is what you are paid to do.

If you are a Framework Developer . You might want to extend the boundaries of known methodologies just to make your Framework appealing to other developers mostly Application Developers.

Most of these patterns are built into a lot of widely used frameworks these days anyway so a good appreciation of what design patterns are is probably a requirement for at least those that a DECENT developers.

Guys. . . there is lack of opportunities in that enviroment.
I believe there are very decent Developers out there in Nigeria but they do not have any opportunity to explore their creative side.

I do go there as well. A lot of the tips there are "technical analysis based". however u do see a couple of company fundamentals analysis tips as well - which i tend to prefer actually "when investing and not trading ". (lets just say am old school)

NSE Stock market is interesting but i wonder why the bonds market is not popular and the derivatives market is virtually none existent. It is virtually impossible to hedge ones risk in NSE i wonder how the mutual funds and pension funds protect themselves if the market is bearish huh
