Porn is a problem. It's a personal problem for many and a cultural problem for all. You may think you have not been affected by porn, but you have because it's embedded in the surrounding culture. The staggering size of the pornography industry, its influence upon the media and the acceleration of technology, paired with the accessibility, anonymity, and affordability of porn all contribute to its increasing impact upon the culture. Pornography affects you whether you’ve ever viewed it or not, and it is helpful to understand some of its negative effects, whether you are a man or woman, struggling with watching it, or simply a mom or dad with a son or daughter. There is a plethora of research on the detrimental effects of pornography (and I do not think that what follows are necessarily the worst of them), but here are seven negative effects of porn upon men and women: 1. PORN CONTRIBUTES TO SOCIAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEMS WITHIN MEN Anti-pornography activist, Gail Dines, notes that young men who become addicted to porn, “neglect their schoolwork, spend huge amounts of money they don’t have, become isolated from others, and often suffer depression.” ( Pornland , 93). Dr. William Struthers, who has a PhD in biopsychology from the University of Illinois at Chicago, confirms some of these and adds more, finding that men who use porn become controlling, highly introverted, have high anxiety, narcissistic, curious, have low self- esteem, depressed, dissociative, distractible ( Wired for Intimacy, 64-65). Ironically, while viewing porn creates momentary intensely pleasurable experiences, it ends up leading to several negative lingering psychological experiences. 2. PORN REWIRES THE MALE BRAIN Struthers elaborates, As men fall deeper into the mental habit of fixating on [pornographic images], the exposure to them creates neural pathways. Like a path is created in the woods with each successive hiker, so do the neural paths set the course for the next time an erotic image is viewed. Over time these neural paths become wider as they are repeatedly traveled with each exposure to pornography. They become the automatic pathway through which interactions with woman are routed….They have unknowingly created a neurological circuit that imprisons their ability to see women rightly as created in God’s image (Wired For Intimacy, 85). In a similar vein regarding porn’s effect upon the brain, Naomi Wolf writes in her article, "The Porn Myth," After all, pornography works in the most basic of ways on the brain: It is Pavlovian. An orgasm is one of the biggest reinforcers imaginable. If you associate orgasm with your wife, a kiss, a scent, a body, that is what, over time, will turn you on; if you open your focus to an endless stream of ever-more- transgressive images of CyberLove slaves, that is what it will take to turn you on. The ubiquity of sexual images does not free eros but dilutes it. 3. PORN TURNS SEX INTO MASTURBATION Sex becomes self-serving. It becomes about your pleasure and not the self- giving, mutually reciprocating intimacy that it was designed for. 4. PORN DEMEANS AND OBJECTIFIES WOMEN This occurs from hard-core to soft-core pornography. Pamela Paul, in her book Pornified, quoting the research of one psychologist who has researched pornography at Texas A&M, writes, ‘Softcore pornography has a very negative effect on men as well. The problem with softcore pornography is that it’s voyeurism teaches men to view women as objects rather than to be in relationships with women as human beings.’ According to Brooks, pornography gives men the false impression that sex and pleasure are entirely divorced from relatoinships. In other words, pornography is inherently self-centered–something a man does by himself, for himself–by using another women as the means to pleasure, as yet another product to consume (80). Paul references one experiment that revealed a rather shocking further effect of porn: “men and women who were exposed to large amounts of pornography were significantly less likely to want daughters than those who had none. Who would want their own little girl to be treated that way?” (80). It becomes about your pleasure and not the self- giving, mutually reciprocating intimacy that it was designed for. Again, it needs to be emphasized, that this is not an effect that only rests upon those who have viewed porn. The massive consumption of porn and the the size of the porn industry has hypersexualized the entire culture. Men and women are born into a pornified culture, and women are the biggest losers. Dines continues, By inundating girls and women with the message that their most worthy attribute is their sexual hotness and crowding out other messages, pop culture is grooming them just like an individual perpetrator would. It is slowly chipping away at their self-esteem, stripping them of a sense of themselves as whole human beings, and providing them with an identity that emphasizes sex and de-emphasizes every other human attribute (Pornland, 118). 5. PORN SQUASHES THE BEAUTY OF A REAL NAKED WOMAN Wolf, in her own blunt way, confirms this, For most of human history, the erotic images have been reflections of, or celebrations of, or substitutes for, real naked women. For the first time in history, the images’ power and allure have supplanted that of real naked women. Today, real naked women are just bad porn (Quoted in Wired for Intimacy, 38). 6. PORN HAS A NUMBING EFFECT UPON REALITY It makes real sex and even the real world boring in comparison. It particularly anesthetizes the emotional life of a man. Paul comments, Pornography leaves men desensitivzed to both outrage and to excitement, leading to an overall diminishment of feeling and eventually to dissatisfaction with the emotional tugs of everyday life… Eventually they are left with a confusing mix of supersized expectations about sex and numbed emotions about women… When a man gets bored with pornography, both his fantasy and real worlds become imbued with indifference. The real world often gets really boring…” (Pornified, 90, 91). 7. PORN LIES ABOUT WHAT IT MEANS TO BE MALE AND FEMALE Dines records how porn tells a false story about men and women. In the story of porn, women are “one-dimensional”–they never say no, never get pregnant, and can’t wait to have sex with any man and please them in whatever way imaginable (or even unimaginable). On the other hand, the story porn tells about men is that they are “soulless, unfeeling, amoral life-support systems for erect joysticks who are entitled to use women in any way they want. These men demonstrated zero empathy, respect, or love for the women they have sex with…(Pornland, xxiv).” This article i |
When it comes to getting jobs, I'll advice you anyday to go for chemical engineering... I agree that petroleum departments in oil companies pay the highest but at d end of d day at least half of the staff workin in these petroleum departments studied Mech, chemical or geology.. Petroleum engineering is highly restricted, the only place you can fully use your degree is in 'some areas' of the oil industry, whereas chem, Mech and Elect can work almost anywhere ... I'm a Petroleum Engineering graduate so I know what I'm saying. If I could go back in time I'll have studied Mechanical
wow, tanx alot. so where do u work wit ur pet engr degree presently? |
thank you guys. am tremendously gaining from your contributions. |
Yes it this question has always troubled my mind. Eventhough i applied for chemical engineering, i'm still curious to know the apparent differences between the duo. Lecturers of the colleges of education in Nigeria under the umbrella body of Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) on Monday commenced a seven-day warming strike to press home their demands from the Federal and States Governments. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been on indefinite for over two months. Chairman of COEASU at the Adeyemi College of Education (ACE), Ondo and the National Vice-President of the union, Samuel Akintunde and Smart Olugbeko, led other members in the protest march that preceded the commencement of the strike action today. They shut the main entrance into the college and brought academic activities on campus to a halt as they embarked on protest march. The union leaders said COEASU embarked on the strike action over failure of the Federal Government to honour the gentleman agreement it entered with the teachers' union in 2009. Besides, it condemned the protracted delay in the release of the White Paper of the Presidential Visitation panels to Federal Colleges of Education. COEASU argued that the delay was a deliberate attempt to ignore the critical issues that the panels unearthed. It also rejected the introduction of Integrated Personnel Payment System (IPPIS), stressing that it was not only retrogressive, but infringed on the very laws establishing colleges of education and the regulatory body; thereby capable of obstructing the smooth running of colleges of education. The union urged both Federal and State governments to fund education sector maximally given its strategic necessity as an indispensable need in the development strides of any nation. Following the strike, the management of Adeyemi College of has suspended the on- going examinations in the school, urging the students to remain calm until COEASU call off the strike. Deputy Provost of ACE, Olufemi Olajuyigbe told journalists that the request for weaver to allow the students finish their exams was turned down by the local chapter of COEASU in order not to incur the sanction of the national body. Olajiyigbe, however pleaded with the Federal Government to save the education sector from total collapse with the on-going strike action by tertiary institutions in the country. |

LAGOS State branch of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, has hailed the last two administrations in the state since 1999 but insists that the successor of Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola who should take over the mantle of leadership in the state should be a Christian in the interest of justice and equity. In a statement titled; 'The Church and Governance of Lagos State' read by the chairman of Lagos PFN, Apostle Alex Bamgbala the umbrella body of Pentecostalism in the state, said Christians have supported the two Muslim administrations in the state since 1999 and it is only fair that they give room for their Christian counterparts to be elected in 2015. "We note with pride that many of our people of the Christian faith, who of course, form the majority of the population of Lagos State without any doubt, have supported these two great leaders (Tinubu and Fashola) with their votes, during the past state elections since 1999. According to the chairman who presided over a monthly meeting of all the 12 PFN provinces in the state, it is only fair and just, that in line with God's will, "Christians, Muslims and all others of different faiths, as stakeholders, to elect a bona fide Christian of integrity, who will take over the mantle of leadership from Gov. Fashola in 2015." He therefore called on all Christians in Lagos to be prepared for the great challenge ahead, stressing that they must all go out during the voters registration exercise and be prepared to vote in all the elections ahead. As part of its corporate social responsibility, the state PFN also gave out cheques to two provinces in the state to alleviate the suffering of gospel ministers in the rural areas of the state. The beneficiary included the Epe and Ifako/Ijaiye areas of the state |

Lifestyle plays an important role in treating your high blood pressure. If you successfully control your blood pressure with a healthy lifestyle, you may avoid, delay or reduce the need for medication. Here are 10 lifestyle changes you can make to lower your blood pressure and keep it down. Exercise regularly Regular physical activity — at least 30 to 60 minutes most days of the week — can lower your blood pressure by 4 to 9 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). And it doesn't take long to see a difference. If you haven't been active, increasing your exercise level can lower your blood pressure within just a few weeks. Eat a healthy diet Eating a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products and skimps on saturated fat and cholesterol can lower your blood pressure by up to 14 mm Hg. This eating plan is known as the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet. It isn't easy to change your eating habits, but with these tips, you can adopt a healthy diet: Keep a food diary. Writing down what you eat, even for just a week, can shed surprising light on your true eating habits. Monitor what you eat, how much, when and why. Consider boosting potassium. Potassium can lessen the effects of sodium on blood pressure. The best source of potassium is food, such as fruits and vegetables, rather than supplements. Talk to your doctor about the potassium level that's best for you. Be a smart shopper. Make a shopping list before heading to the supermarket to avoid picking up junk food. Read food labels when you shop and stick to your healthy-eating plan when you're dining out, too. Cut yourself some slack. Although the DASH diet is a lifelong eating guide, it doesn't mean you have to cut out all of the foods you love. It's OK to treat yourself occasionally to foods you wouldn't find on a DASH diet menu, such as a candy bar or mashed potatoes with gravy. Reduce sodium in your diet Even a small reduction in the sodium in your diet can reduce blood pressure by 2 to 8 mm Hg. The recommendations for reducing sodium are: Limit sodium to 2,300 milligrams (mg) a day or less. A lower sodium level — 1,500 mg a day or less — is appropriate for people 51 years of age or older, and individuals of any age who are African-American or who have high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney disease. To decrease sodium in your diet, consider these tips: Track how much salt is in your diet. Keep a food diary to estimate how much sodium is in what you eat and drink each day. Read food labels. If possible, choose low- sodium alternatives of the foods and beverages you normally buy. Eat fewer processed foods. Potato chips, frozen dinners, bacon and processed lunch meats are high in sodium. Don't add salt. Just 1 level teaspoon of salt has 2,300 mg of sodium. Use herbs or spices, rather than salt, to add more flavor to your foods. |
Avoid mobile phones with an internal aerial/ antenna. These tend to emit higher levels of radiation Use the most efficient mobile phone possible. One indication of efficiency is the phone’s ‘talk time’ - the average amount of talk permitted by one battery charge- up. The longer the ‘talk time’ the more efficient the handset, though this could also indicate a particularly efficient battery. The smallest handsets tend to be less efficient. Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) measurements (the strength of the microwave electromagnetic field emitted by a mobile phone, and soon to be printed on mobile phone handset packages) are a ‘red herring’. The SAR of handsets is assessed when it is operating at full power, taking no account of the efficiency of any given handset. The small differences between handset SAR measurements are more than outweighed by the way you use your phone Use your phone in ‘hands-off’ mode, equipped with a ‘proper headset’ as worn by (e.g.) call centre operators Limit calls to two minutes long whenever possible When you use your phone indoors make sure that: there are a lot of bars showing. When a phone is used in an area with a weak signal (low bars showing) it needs to power up more to reach the nearest mobile phone mast/base station*, so gives off higher emissions. There is some evidence that mobile phone users living in rural areas are 50% more likely to develop a brain tumour than city-dwelling users your phone’s aerial/antenna is as far as possible from your head and hand. If you cannot see it, your phone has an internal aerial/antenna, which tends to be at the back rather than the front of the phone. Phones with an internal aerial/ antenna tend to expose the head to higher levels of radiation you stand as close as possible to an open window, where the signal strength can be up to ten times greater than in the centre of the room you always hold the handset on the window side of your head to minimise the number and strength of the signals passing through your head on their way to and from the phone mast Hold your phone as far away from your ear as practical. Even half an inch (15 millimetres) gap makes a huge difference in the strength of the microwave/radio-frequency electromagnetic fields (MREMFs) penetrating into your body. Instead, turn up the volume or turn on the loudspeaker if necessary Never place any fingers behind the earpiece to press it to your ear as: this will channel more of the radiation into your head and arm the handset is forced to operate at a much higher transmitter power When you switch your mobile phone on or right off, or dial out, it emits bursts of signal that can be hundreds even thousands of times higher than the signal strength used during a conversation or text message send. Hold your phone away from your body: before pressing the dial key and until you hear the respondent pick up for a few seconds after switching off your phone completely. You may think that it is off, but it is telling the network (at full blast) that it is shutting down Switch your mobile phone right off rather than leave it on stand-by. In stand-by it frequently powers up to check where the best phone mast/ base station is, then tells it (at full blast) where it is. The weaker the signal from the mast/base station, the more frequently the phone powers up to do this Do not hold your phone when sending a text. Place the phone on a flat surface, press the ‘Send’ key. Withdraw your hand immediately Do not use your mobile phone when travelling. MREMFs can be both screened by, and amplified by the metal in cars, buses, coaches and trains. You will also irradiate the people sitting near you with those amplified fields. One piece of research found that 30 people using their mobile phones in a carriage seating 151 people exposed all 151 to microwave radiation levels above international safety standards. If you have to make a call when travelling open a window and stand/sit as near to it as possible Beware operators advertising “unlimited weekend minutes; talk time of up to 200 minutes and standby up to 180 hours.” The temptation to ‘get your money’s worth’ can prove irresistible, yet potentially very damaging healthwise |
3)Winning A Girls Heart…..Through The Power Of Dance!: Okay, I know, the Indians are more guilty of this than Hollywood but then they do this in pretty much every dance movie there is. Trodden down poor boy meets classy school girl in high school/college and somehow, she manages to always get attracted to him the first time they lock eyes. However, she just can’t leave her big jerk of a boyfriend……until the good guy shows he can bust a move! He dances his way into her heart, she leaves her jerko boyfriend and they dance their way into the happily ever after that is the end credits. In reality: The girl would swear never to date him for embarrassing her in public. I mean, ladies, how many of you want that guy that has been tripping for you to just suddenly come bust a move outside your father’s compound? As against, I don’t know, a movie at the Galleria, shopping at Shoprite or even just buying you recharge card? Why Nollywood can’t pull it off: Just imagine Ramsey Nouah droppig it like its hot before Ini Edo! The amount of aboniki they would need to massage his body after every scene would set the aboniki guys up for life! 4)Bad guy always has the upper hand, then practically throws it away: Have you noticed how so many times, the bad guy juuuust happens to have the good guy in a tight corner….then does something stupid…..like FAILING TO SHOOT THE GODDAMN GOOD GUY AFTER POINTING A GUN AT HIM FOR, I DUNNO, FIVE HOURS? Why is it that it is right when they have the chance to put the good guy out of the misery of acting another part of the movie for good, that’s when the bad guy decides to tell us his entire life story while the good guy figures out how to free himself with one toothpick and a piece of thread. Are they shitting us in Hollywood? Why Nollywood can’t make it work: Well, Emeka Ani can hardly have time to start talking about he wanted to kill Kanayo O. Kanayo all along while a pastor is praying over him while sprinkling holy water over his head and lightning is flashing and his coven is falling apart. But just imagine Emeka Enyiocha with a gun pointed at Nonso Diobi who is trying to cut through the rope binding him with a blunt fork. Comedy central material! 5)The haunted guys find out how to kill the monster only after there are two of them left: I love horror movies. I watched loads and loads of horror movies, and one thing I’ve learnt from them is that it is practically impossible to kill a monster/ghost/zombie/vampire/werewolf unless there are just say two or three out of like 10 or 20 people left. Oh, I also learnt that the black guys usually die first or second but that’s not such an important lesson. Whatever happened to two heads being better than one. And when you have ten heads that get wiped out one after the other till there are only two, shouldn’t it follow that the remaining two just commit suicide to save themselves having to get killed by said monster? But no, it is only after their compadri have died do they figure out that the monster’s weakness is water, or cocaine (as in that Elijah Wood movie, can’t remember the name) or hair relaxer (Evolution) or some such silly thing like that. If that where the case, if i meet a horrible looking thing, I will bust out all the hard drugs I have and hope it kills the thing instead of getting it high and it then goes apeshit on me. Why Nollywood can’t pull it off: Why wait till you’re all dead when there is a pastor around the corner? After having consulted everybody and everything, pastor is the sure cure to all things that tie red wrappers, fly at night or shoot bright lights from their hands while you hear a sound like someone farted under water. In fact, I think Nollywood has been smarter on this one! http://zakuraweekly.com/five-ways-hollywood-movies-are-as-bad-as-nollywood-movies/
THATS why they are called films. the wont entertain u without using tricks |
Despite the resolve on Thursday by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to continue the on-going strike until all agreements signed in 2009 are reached, the federal government, on Friday, ordered that lecturers should go back to classrooms after it had disbursed the sum of N30 billion for earned academic allowances. The directive which was given by the secretary to the government of the federation, Sen Anyim Pius Anyim, during a meeting between the federal government and the vice-chancellors of the 61 public universities, stated that "Government, hereby, urges every staff of the nation's universities to return to work as all issues are being resolved." He said with particular reference to the contentious issue of earned allowances, every staff of the universities that is so entitled should verify his claim with the university council and accordingly get paid as "from the foregoing, it is obvious that government has demonstrated sufficient commitment to the implementation of the 2009 FG/ASUU agreement. "After series of discussions, government has now provided N30 billion to support the university councils in settling the earned allowances. The amount will be disbursed to the various university councils which are in the position to know who is entitled to how much after verification." He revealed that "Traditionally, universities pay this to deserving staff but because of the amount which ASUU now claims as arrears, government has decided to assist the university councils to pay" as government did not receive any computation of amount involved until February, 2013. "By this computation, ASUU is claiming N92 billion as arrears for three year's payment based on percentage rage of between 15 and 20 per cent of personnel cost." While there was consensus that revitalising the tertiary institutions is of critical importance to the nation, Anyim noted that "when put together, the amount of funds from the budgetary and non-budgetary sources that goes into the sector is quite huge but without corresponding impact. While acknowledging the contributions of the Non-Academic Staff Union, NASU, Senior Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, and other stakeholders, Anyim reiterated the government's resolve 'to bringing the students back to school and appreciated the patience of parents and students as government is making every effort to revitalise the university system." It would be recalled that on July 2, 2013, ASUU declared what it called "total and indefinite strike" over issues it says has remained unresolved pertaining to an agreement it reached with government in 2009. |
