Soon, the masses were wondering: Was something amiss in the triangle-shaped stretch of ocean between Miami, Bermuda and Puerto Rico? Today, we’ve all heard of the Bermuda Triangle. And over the years, a whole host of theories, from the wacky to the reasonable, have cropped up to explain its disappearances.

The Bermuda triangle, also known as the Devils Triangle, is a loosely defined region in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean, where a number of aircraft and ships are said to have disappeared under mysterious circumstances.

The legend of the Bermuda Triangle probably started sometimes around 1945, when a squadron of five Navy Avenger airplanes disappeared on a training flight out of Fort Lauderdale, Fla under the leadership of an experienced captain never returned to the base. All are clueless as to what may have happened to it. In fact a Martin flying boat that was sent for the search operation also went missing.

In another incident of 1918, a large well known cargo ship went missing in the triangle area without a trace with over 300 crew members on board. This was probably one of the largest losses of lives on Bermuda triangle.
And there are many more such incidents. While theories such as methane gas blow out below the ocean causing ships to sink, electronic fog engulfing a flight or ship and then taking it to unknown zones, hurricanes destroying aircraft and lot more of such cases, but nobody has been able to pinpoint which incident of disappearance took place exactly for which cause. And strangely having made inroads to explain why such incidents took place in Bermuda Triangle area, the US Navy as well as the US Board of Geographic names (the organization mainly responsible for identifying areas on maps) has declined to recognize Bermuda Triangle as any such physical area on the Ocean which causes such deadly incidents of disappearances. In the same vein, the World Wide Fund for Nature identified the world’s 10 most dangerous waters for shipping, but the Bermuda Triangle was not among them. One might want to ask why is the US refusing to recognize the Bermuda Triangle? Is it because they have been the ones with the Highest Bermuda casualty?

The modern Bermuda Triangle legend didn’t get started until 1950 when an article written by Edward Van Winkle Jones was published by the Associated Press. Jones reported several incidences of disappearing ships and planes in the Bermuda Triangle, including five US Navy torpedo bombers that vanished on December 5, 1945, and the commercial airliners “Star Tiger and “Star Ariel” which disappeared on January 30, 1948 and January 17, 1949 respectively. All told, about 135 individuals were unaccounted for, and they all went missing around the Bermuda Triangle. “they were swallowed without a trace.”

It was a 1955 book, The Case for the UFO, by M.K. Jessup that started pointing fingers at alien life forms. After all, no bodies or wreckage had yet been discovered. By 1964, Vincent H. Gaddis who coined the term “Bermuda Triangle”—wrote an article saying over 1000 lives had been claimed by the area. He also agreed that it was a “pattern of strange events.” The Bermuda Triangle obsession hit its peak in the early 1970s with the publication of several paperback books about the topic, including the bestseller by Charles Berlitz, The Bermuda Triangle.

Authors such as Kusch have written many articles to debunk the Bermuda theory saying all happenings are being exaggerated by authors of Bermuda published theories to incite fear and trembling in mankind.

Nevertheless, many magazine articles, TV shows, movies and Nairaland.com have continued to feature the Bermuda Triangle.

So, are these incidents actually caused by Bermuda Triangle Phenomena? Or these are just mere accidents that also take place in other Ocean areas as well, and are simply hyped up here by some theorists to draw unnecessary attention? Figure it out yourself.
