NANS LAGOS PRAISES THE PHILANTHROPIC ACT OF ENGR. DR. FUNMI AYINKE FOR DONATING AUTOMATED WHEELCHAIR AND SCHOLARSHIP TO AN INCAPACITATED 400L STUDENT OF UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS

The leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Lagos axis, which is the government of all students in Lagos state, saddled with succinct responsibilities of defending the interest of her subject and encouraging a meaningful campus experience to all Nigerians studying in Lagos state express our sincere appreciation to Engr. Dr. Funmi Ayinke, for her thoughtful donation of an automated wheelchair and study scholarship in honour of Mr. Aremu Mubarak Olajide, a 400 level students of University of Lagos.

The automated wheelchair sure will be able to ease the movement of Mr. Aremu Mubarak in his present incapacitated condition around the campus community; lecture halls, leisure centres and any other necessary sojourn within and outside the campus everyday.

The entire Nigerian Students in Lagos appreciate the fact that Engr. Dr. Funmi Ayinke's donation is working alongside our foster efforts and volunteers to help facilitate successful adoptions and meaningful campus experience to all our subjects across the ten tertiary institutions in Lagos State which forms the tenet our association.

We can't in words tell how much this donations will influence positively the life of the recipient who is by virtue of studentship our responsibility to make campus experience meaningful and conducive for him.

We therefore, appeal to Nigerian leaders to follow in the good step of Engr. Dr. Funmi Ayinke, in providing succour to many Nigerian students who are physically challenged. This is what we call leadership and this is what we expect from our leaders.

BOSMAN : A MAN WITH THE HEART OF GOLD (Part 1)

Hon Olatunbosun Mojeed Bakare (BOSMAN), federal house of representative aspirant Epe, was born in the early 80's, June 11th, to the family of Bakare in Ikosi Ejirin LCDA , he's a son of a notable leader of the ruling APC, and Ikosi Ejirin community leader, Chief. Bakare Saliu Adeoye ( Baba Major)

He had his primary and secondary education at RCM primary school and Lofi Ogunmude comprehensive college Ejirin. He proceeded to Tai Solarin college of education, studied Political science/Economic where he bagged an NCE and Bac(ED), a sociological and Master (in view) , Quinipiac University Connecticut USA.

*Hon. Olatunbosun Bakare ( BOSMAN)* deserves to be celebrated from different perspectives, especially at a time when electorates expectations are high concerning those that represented them in public offices. Even though he is still a private citizen, has put smiles on faces and has become one of the greatest friends of the poor and downtrodden within and outside Epe.

BOSMAN , as he is often called understands the challenges of the people and has maintained a rare reputation for helping individuals, groups and institutions to overcome challenges through humanitarian efforts.

Many people within Epe have continued to benefit from his magnanimity in terms of various monetary gifts, provision of educational materials, organising health programs, empowerment projects and giving of money for business start-up and helping the downtrodden to have a fruitful festive celebration.

To call Hon Olatunbosun Bakare a man in whose veins flow the milk of human kindness is simply saying the very obvious fact about his person. He is so passionate about Epe community to the extent that he has become not only an household name but also a popular man due to this involvement in activities that has to do with indigents and always sit around them at every giving opportunities.

NB: part 2 will feature his journey to politics and humanitarian efforts in Epe.

Bariga Local Council Chairman, Honourable Alabi Kolade David proved Tuesday could be to support passion and upcoming talent.

On Tuesday 23rd Nov, he met Mr. Taiwo Osinowo, a.k.a Bodataiye Oniyakuya, the comedian who drew his caricature picture.

Mr Taiwo, a comic artist, presented the comic picture of the Chairman to him at his office located at the Bawala Local Council area, which he had earlier posted on his Instagram handle @bodataiye_oniyakuya, which attracted the attention of the Chairman with a reply below;

"Please pass LadiLak to my office nothing do you and present my picture to my office".

Receiving the comic art, Hon. Alabi Kolade commend his creative capacity for doing something out of the normal and carving a niché for himself.

ALABI HOSTS ALGON N.E.C IN BARIGA

The National Executive Council of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) under the leadership of Hon (Barr.) Alabi Kolade David were earlier today hosted in Bariga.

The visit marked a round up of the the council's meeting and deliberation which held at Radisson Blu Hotel Ikeja Lagos, The cabinet members in their numbers had a tour to some of the completed and work-in-progress project of Mr President.

The cabinet members visited the magnificent C.M.S Primary Health Centre commissioned by His Excellency Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwoolu February 14, 2020, the tour as well got to the Modern Primary School, Fire Station and Office Extension Complex ongoing beside the Bariga Council Secretariat.

The tour however climaxed at the refaced Council Secretariat and the President's office. The tour and visit was capped with a get-together and feasting at the Council Registry Hall. In their reaction to the tour, the NEC members were amazed at the brilliance of Mr President with respect to the projects they visited as well the faces the Council Secretariat as well as his office were wearing.

At the get-together the NEC members explained that the experience they had at the tour corroborates why they ritually have their NEC meetings rotated across states of the federation, so that cues can be taken for replication in their respective Local Governments.

They appreciated the benign gesture of Mr President and eulogized him for his giant strides in Bariga Local Council as well as the ALGON at large.

Bariga Council Chairman 'Hon. Alabi Kolade' make first appointment, name 'Hon. Adebomojo' as Chief of Staff

Honourable Alabi Kolade David Chairman Bariga Local Council who also double as the Chairman Conference 57 in Lagos on Wednesday 10th November has make his first appointment, announced Honourable Adebomojo Oluwatoyin as his Chief of Staff for his second tenure in office.

Adebomojo a renowned politician and grassroot mobiliser, before now he has served in different capacities in Bariga and by extension Lagos.

Hon. Adebomojo who served as Chief of Staff during the first tenure also as the Director of Mobilization under KACCO (Kolade Alabi Campaign Committee) during the 2021 Local Government election.

LAGOS STATE CONSUMER PROTECTION AGENCY VISITS BARIGA

The Chairman of Bariga local council, *Hon Kolade Alabi*, has said the council is ready to work with the Lagos state consumer protection agency to ensure that consumers get quality value for products and services they pay for.

Alabi made the assertion during a visit to his Bawala council secretariat by the delegation of the LASCOPA, led by the General manager, Mr Afolabi Solebo.

Mr Solebo in his address said the primary reason of their visit was to bring LASCOPA closer to the people of Bariga as well as to kick off sensitization programs that will guide Barigans of their rights as consumers.

Alabi in his response thanked the team for their visit on behalf of the people of Bariga, as well as for identifying with the critical stakeholders, which is local government.

He said people need protection from all consumable items in all spheres of our lives, but the problem is that laws guiding consumer rights are not properly implemented. Alabi added that government is approaching issues from top to bottom, instead of using the bottom- top approach.

The council chief promised to support LASCOPA by providing operating office for them in Bariga and also advice his colleagues in other councils to key in to the advocacy.

The Vice chairman, Hon. Mrs Adeola Zainot Kuponiyi , Council treasurer, Mr Samuel Apata and the council manager were also present at the event.

Federal College of Education (Technical) Akoka forthcoming 2021 Alumni Election has been described by one of her Alumnus Caleb Olonitola as making a decision whether to move one step forward or three steps backwards.

We must first commend the former Dean School of Technical Dr. Adesuyi for showing his interest to serve at this critical time and haven initiated series of dialogues that serve as a road map toward a clear liberation of our Ama Mater.

May i acknowledge the impact of the Alumni Association Luminary. Dr. Adesuyi awho before now had staged a borehole with his money to solve problem for students and staff water plight, borehole linked to the 2 College library which the students are using till now. Dr. Adesuyi who has given over 25 students job last year at Abeokuta. He do pay school fees for students regularly as support to their Education sustainability.

Its important to acknowledged that Saturday 30th October FCET Akoka Alumni election is a choice between taking three steps backward and moving forward.

Who will you trust to better manage your affairs through the Alumni Association

Do we go back to those who have served you for 3 years with results playing blame game; or do we move forward with different set of Luminary that has had numerous personal achievements both in their personal life and service to serve us?

Bariga Vice Chairman, Hon. Kuponiyi Adeola Zainot popularly known as ADK yesterday Monday 27th September marks her birthday amidst joyous celebration with her constituency, Council management, colleagues, friends, families, league of imams, political associates and well wishers.

KOLADE ALABI DECLARES INTENTION TO RUN FOR A SECOND TERM IN OFFICE

Hon Kolade Alabi, the chairman of Bariga local council has declared his intention to run for a second term.
 
The chairman made the declaration at a gathering of All Progressives Congress (APC) members today in Ladi Lak primary school, Bariga .
 
The opening remark was made by the DG of Kolade Alabi campaign committee ( KACCO) , Hon Adedoyin Banjo.

The former chairman of Bariga, Hon Omoyele Oris, Hon Wole Diya ( former member house of representatives ), Apostle Peter Oyewusi ( Somolu Baiga Apex leader), and Bariga Local council APC chairman , Hon Akin Mejolagbe took turn to speak on how the Bariga sole candidate has transformed Bariga and the need for him to secure a second term.

Alabi in his address said Bariga has remained steadily prosperous because of the positive outlook of its residents but there is still a lot more to be done.
 
“In the last four years , I have fulfilled my promises to you to make Bariga work for all,” he said.
 
“With your support, we have made Bariga a better place and changed the face of he community . I did not do it alone; we did it together, because you believed, and you supported me all through the journey, and I can assure you I wont take your support for granted "
 
“Bariga has remained steadily prosperous because of your positive outlook. I urge you to always stay positive in your personal and communal lives and continue to aspire to great things.
 
“In these four years as your chairman, I have seen visible proof that we can achieve unbelievable things when we all come together and belief in our dreams.
 
“We achieved because you believed. But there is still a lot more to be done. But I am not daunted. I am not tired. And I am sure you feel the same way because we all envision a better Bariga, a Bariga of our dreams.
 
“So, I humbly call you again, to give me your support as I seek to continue with your mandate to steer the affairs of Bariga. I ask you to believe again and together, let’s achieve more.”
 
The council boss who picked up his expression of interest and nomination form at the state secretariat of the party in Acme earlier his month, thanked party members for giving him the platform to contribute to the growth and development of the Bariga, he also used the opportunity to remind them that his admnistration will hit the ground running in his second term.

Yesterday Thursday 4th March the leadership of the Northern Youths Initiative for Peace and Good Governance honour the National President of Association of Local Governments Chairmen of Nigeria (ALGON) Barr. ALABI Kolade David with Icon of Societal Transformation Award.

According to our source Caleb Olonitola who's one of the President aides describes the Award as a well deserved and a welcome one, he further narrates that the award was as result of Barr. Kolade Alabi non stop contribution to the reformation of the ALGON with respect massive transformation at the grassroot (Lagos).

However, this's not the first award and ofcos it won't be the last as he continue to work hard for the interest of the country, he said.

The National President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria ( ALGON ), Hon. Alabi Kolade David wishes Nigerians a Merry and happier Christmas.

In his Christmas message, Alabi said "sharing and giving are the true cores of the teachings and practice of Jesus Christ who shared and gave even His own life while he lived amongst men".

He reiterated further, "Let us give and share love with each other in our families, in our homes, in our places of work and business and everywhere we interact with our fellow men. Let us care for the vulnerable and give unconditional love" .

Over the years, the lessons of Christmas and Jesus Christ whose birth became the reason for this season resonate in teachings like unconditional love, forgiveness of sin, grace, sharing and championing the cause of the weak and the oppressed as well as the vulnerable. ALGON Unites As Factional Group Makes U-turn, Pledges Loyalty to Alabi’s Leadership

Not less than seven months after floating a parallel association, a splinter group of Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) under the auspices of Interim Management Committee (IMC) has pledged loyalty to the Hon. Alabi Kolade David-led association, pledging that “all cases in court and petitions before the security agencies” instituted for and against ALGON leadership be withdrawn immediately.

This was disclosed in a resolution signed by all the seven members of the factional group. The IMC members who returned to ALGON include Hon. Ige Ropo Emmanuel, Hon. Adeagbo Adeniyi, Hon. Dangiye Ubarugu, Hon. Emeka Ogelle, Hon. Idi Aminu, Hon. Wasiu Owolabi and Hon. Yinka Dallas Ayeni.

They maintained that “going forward, we pledge our loyalty to the spirit and letter of our constitution and we hereby call on all members of the general Assembly of ALGON to join hands with the current NEC to move ALGON in the right direction and we equally solicit for the utmost support and cooperation of all ALGON stakeholders and the general public as ALGON proceeds on the path of peace and unity.”

With the collapse of its parallel structure, the dissident group has now pledged total loyalty to Hon. Alabi-led leadership of the Association.

The Interim Management Committee (IMC), which broke away from the association on May 30, 2020, explained that they were earlier misled and have now come to the realization of the truth.

The now defunct IMC comprising the signatories to the resolution are council chairmen met in Abuja on December 10, 2020 and resolved: “that there is overall need for peace in the due administration of our noble Association under the leadership of Hon. Kolade David Alabi.

“That all cases in court and petitions before the security agencies instituted for and against be withdrawn forthwith.

‘That all grievances expressed by members be channeled to the Hon. Kolade David Alabi-led National Executive Committee and finally “that the current leadership summons an emergency meeting of the General Assembly to further unify our Association.”

Recalling their short-lived journey, they said the IMC was “set up by some honourable chairmen of local government councils from across the nation on 30th of May, 2020 owing to some misgivings, misunderstanding and misinformation and misrepresentations in the affairs of our national office.

“However, it is commonly said that time heals wounds; the events that ensued after have subsequently led members to rethink and rescind their actions and return to the fold.

“Firstly, the erstwhile chairman of the IMC, Hon Abdullahi Maje took a detour from the mandate of the IMC and eventually voluntarily resigned from that position based on the directive of His Excellency, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, Governor of Niger State.

“Secondly, members received clarifications on the erroneous reservations hitherto held against the leadership of our noble Association on the issues of finance and the articles of our constitution and more importantly, members realized that some of the allegations bandied were figments of the imagination of a former staff who has constituted himself into distraction for selfish purposes.

“Also, in the light of the fundamental fact that the lifespan of the IMC expired by effluxion of time on the 30th November 2020 without renewal, we have now come to the following just and inevitable resolutions”, to return to the ALGON mainstream led by Hon. Alabi and to pledge unalloyed support and loyalty to his leadership.

BARIGA LOCAL COUNCIL AGOG FOR ABIRU CAMPAIGN, AS ALABI DOLES OUT 10 MILLION NAIRA TO EMPOWER RESIDENTS

Hundreds of small scale business owners get financial support.

Ladi Lak primary school Bariga, today bubbled with a lot of activities as residents and the All Progressives Congress (APC) faithful thronged the venue for the campaign of APC East senatorial candidate in December 5th bye election.

The atmosphere was charged with excitement as thousands of people sang and chanted APC slogans, while awaiting the arrival of party leaders.

Residents, party members, youth, market women, youths danced endlessly to rave songs being dished out by the DJ.

The party chairman, Revd Oyasodun, the member representing Somolu federal constituency, Hon Ademorin Kuye, and the member representing Somolu 2, Hon Rotimi Abiru and Senator Anthony Adefuye took turn to speak on the reason why a vote for Abiru is a vote for progress and better future for people of Lagos East.

Hon Kuye expressed satisfaction with the large turn out of people, he also speaks on the 1.786 billion Naira flood and erosion control project for Somolu federal constituency and the project will be done under 10 months, and he said more of such will come to our constituency if we have Abiru as our senator, he said he is a man that has been tested and trusted.

Rotimi Abiru also announced a 1 million Naira donation by the APC standard bearer, Mr Tokunbo Abiru for the party members present at the meeting, and another 1 million Naira was added by Alabi.

The Council chairman, Hon Kolade Alabi, while speaking, enumerated his scorecard on infrastructure, and health. On infrastructure, he highlighted the roads his admnistration has constructed in Bariga. He mentioned the 21 roads constructed in various wards and the 11 done in collaboration with the state government, as well as the ones ongoing and those in the pipeline.

Continuing , the council chief said 37 babies has been delivered in the standardized CMS Health Centre since it was commissioned on the 14th of February 2020, and more is still being expected.

The highlight of the meeting was the financial assistance to small scale business owners and petty traders by the Kolade Alabi administration. Hundreds of Bariga residents got a financial support amounting to 10 million Naira. Alabi said this is necessary because of the COVID-19 and end SARS protest that has adverse effects on many households. The member representing Somolu federal constituency, Hon Ademorin Kuye added 2 million Naira to support the fund.

The Lagos State ministry of Civic Engagement held the second phase flag-off programme for Mother, Infant and Child, tagged *"The Research Phase"* in Bariga Local Counci.

The initiative aimed at providing nutritional foods and supplements for 2,200 indigent pregnant women in Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas across the State is an initiative of the Ministry of Civic Engagement, in collaboration with the ministry of SDG, ministry of Agriculure, ministry of wealth creation and some other public partners.

The Special Adviser on Civic Engagement, Princess Aderemi Adebowale represented the first lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwoolu, she said the second phase was flagged off on the 28th of July , 2020 in Ikorodu and they intend to take the program to all the Local Governments/LCDA of Lagos State.

Adebowale said in Lagos State, healthcare featured prominently as one of the pillars of the T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda of the present administration with emphasis on provision of affordable, qualitative and accessible healthcare and improvement of primary healthcare facilities in the 20 LGs and 37 LCDAs for all citizens irrespective of their locations or status in the State.

The Chairman of Bariga Local Council, *Hon Kolade Alabi* in his goodwill message appreciates Govenor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his wife Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu for the initiative and also praised the social adviser for the good job she's been doing to pregnant women in the state.

Alabi said he will take the initiative as a point of contact to his colleagues in ALGON and ask them to emulate it.

*"Local government will key in to the program and support the state government to make sure pregnant women are taken care of, this program is good for seamless delivery of pregnant women"* says the council chief.

He sent an appreciation to the governor on behalf of all council chairmen for this wonderful initiative.

The special adviser on sustainable development goals, Hon Solape Hamod, Mr Hakeem Adeniji- permanent Secretary, and some other guest also spoke at the event.

The pregnant women were given packed food items and seasons, as well as supplements to aid seamless delivery; all these items will be given to them every week for one month.

National Youth Council of Nigeria (Bariga Branch) leadership has okay this timeout to resolve for proper dialogue between Government and the teeming population of Youth over issues that demands urgent attention in attaining mutual agreement without further destruction of peaceful co-existence.

Firstly, Our condolences goes to the family of the deceased (Youths) who fought for the course till their last breadth, may Almighty creator comfort their immediate families. Also, to our gallant officers who in the course of discharging their duties lost their life in serving the nation may the efforts of our hero's past never be in vein. It is important to acknowledge that the past few days has been so challenging to the patriotic youth of our dear Local Council with the mission to #ENDSARS, police brutality among other issues affecting Nigeria youth.

The struggle has prove again the power of oneness among Youths to champion a common course. Without missing words, the President Federal Republic of Nigeria President Mohammed Buhari has assured the teeming population of Nigeria Youth of his assurance to #ENDSAR, reform Nigeria police force and by extension the 5of5 demands. Haven achieved the targeted audience it's time to await the swift implementation and proper inclusion of Youth into governance of our country starting from the grassroot (LG).

However, we commend the proactive actions taken by the Council Chairman Hon Alabi Kolade to prevent much more Government and private properties from been destroyed by the perpetrators haven acknowledged Charley boy police station scenario among others.

In conclusion, as the Governor of Lagos state Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu ease the curfew imposed on Lagosians from today Saturday 24th October 2020 8:00am till 6:00pm, life and properties becomes top priority, we plead with the Youth of Bariga and by extension Lagos State to shun any form of violence, destruction of Government or private properties or sharing of unverified news/information that's capable of causing mayhem to the nation should be discouraged in its totality.

The National President of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria, Hon. Kolade David Alabi, has aid only true federalism and devolution of powers would guarantee the survival of the local government administration as a third tier of government in the country. Onyebuchi Ezigbo presents the excerpts:

What was the cause of the recent rancor in ALGON that led to an unsuccessful move to oust you from office?
Perhaps, your question is in reference to the mischiefmakers, who paraded themselves in the name of ALGON and who indeed were not members of our National Executive Council. It therefore becomes expedient for the body of ALGON to reaffirm the confidence vote on my leadership of the association.
There is an established procedure in our constitution that enables one to become a N.E.C member. I truly pity those uninformed, who are desperate non-members of NEC. States Representatives and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) thought it wise and expedient to reaffirm my leadership with total loyalty.

Do you think the objective of establishing the association for local government councils is being realised yet?
Yes, it is the springboard for propelling development at the grassroots. Second, the objective of the association is being pragmatically pursued with the best practices, mindful of the fact that our democracy is still passing through “the mill” and with time rest assured that we shall get there.

Considering the declining fortunes of local government administration in the country, what do you recommend as the best way to reform local government in Nigeria to ensure their survival?

On the average, the local government councils in Nigeria today are advancing towards higher grounds especially, since my assumption of duty as the National President ALGON. My leadership came in few months before the Executive Order that brought about the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU)’s intervention on direct disbursement of local government funds and for states, where democratically elected local government system is in operation like Lagos State.

We have enjoyed a very cordial fiscal relationship, which has now become a model to copy. I make bold to say that frantic efforts are being geared towards repositioning the local government council in our renewed advocacy appealing to the states to kindly save the local government councils through elections and I must say the state governors are trying. If not the pandemic, many elections would have been in place.

Indeed, efforts aimed at advancing grassroots development in the last one year of my administration has been a continuum, notwithstanding other noticeable economic setbacks caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

For ALGON as a body, devolution of power is the panacea to our survival. Local government administration is fully entrenched in the 1999 constitution (as amended) and there is every sense in embracing it holistically.

What would you want to be remembered for when leave office as ALGON president?

My tenure as the National President of ALGON is still on course. My passion and courage to change the narratives from the earlier unpleasant experience is by raising the bar for effective rural governance as a breeding ground and model for appreciating “Democracy in Action”.

I have strong optimism that moving forward, with time and programmes, which we have lined up, it will be tenure wrapped with numerous benefits. You will also agree with me that governance at the grassroots is pivotal to development as seen in some of my giant strides and accomplishment as the National President of ALGON for which posterity may be kind to my person.

Under my watch, we have advanced and maintained our follow-up on collaboration and synergy with the United Cities and Local Governments – Africa (UCLG – AFRICA) and that of the European Union. ALGON leadership has placed in the front burner of the central government for Local Councils to be treated as a worthy ally to the states and for the Federal Government to consider an upward review of our monthly revenue allocation.


We now have the unique opportunity to participate in the dialogue with the European Union Development (EUD) representatives in the formulation and execution of agreed programmes (2021 – 2027).

The recovery of our ALGON HOUSE in Maitama is an incredible and symbolic masterpiece of the association in Abuja and we have championed under my watch the refund of the $2.6 Billion unremitted Paris Club.

A trip to Morocco was embarked on with my Executive to learn how best the local authorities can work perfectly with the central government in Nigeria. We are presently harvesting its gains despite the ravaging pandemic across the rural areas. Presently, decorum has been restored. The staff of ALGON is now given a sense of belonging and much more.

Can you say the purpose of ALGON been achieved?
The objective includes but not limited to coordination, collaboration, alignment and development of synergy amongst the three tiers of governments viz the federal, state and local governments.
I haste to say that we are already moving in the trajectory of the anticipated goal of the Association and do not forget that the lack of consistency and short duration of service as National President were part of the policy shift/variation.

By and large, we should appreciate the journey so far! Some of the impending bottlenecks are being looked into with all intent and purposes to surmounting them both constitutionally and with applied wisdom where necessary.
Can you assess the security situation in Nigeria under the present administration?

Quite challenging but surmountable. It requires the absolute cooperation of the citizens to provide adequate information that will facilitate the nailing of dissidents and agents of destruction and instability. Permit to use the herdsmen/cattle rustling conflicts with their host communities.

We all know that the climatic/seasonal change is a major mitigating factor for animal breeding thereby forcing the herdsmen to migrate from the Northern parts of Nigeria Southwards with wholesome damages to farmlands. The consequence of such inordinate action is low yield of farm produce!

The panacea for this particular conflict is to create sectorial and dedicated ranches, thereby relieving the host communities of anger and hatred for unlawful takeover and wanton destruction of farmlands. In as much as we need food crops, we need dairy and meat but we advocate better understanding and that is why the recent approval and takeoff sum of the N13.6 Billion for community policing is a welcome development aimed at mitigating the skirmishes.

What have been the effects of Covid-19 on lives of rural communities and most especially, the ability of local government councils to perform their roles?

The Covid-19 pandemic has clearly exposed our inadequacies in the health care sector. In containing the Primary Health Issues, it has therefore become necessary and urgent, if you ask me, for us to quickly rise to the challenge and the need to fund the health needs! Apparently, the cardinal responsibility of governments is to save lives and property.

In this regard, ALGON is assiduously pursuing the bottom-top approach from local authorities apparatus through the states and to the central government rather than the top-down approach as presently practiced.

Okowa restates call for revenue allocation formula review


Delta Governor, Sen. (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa, has called for a review of the existing revenue allocation formula in favour of states and local governments, in reflection of current socio-economic realities in the country.

Okowa made the call when he received a courtesy call, the National Executive Council members of Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) led by the National President, Mr Kolade Alabi, in Asaba on Thursday.

He said that the review of the revenue formula had become expedient in view of the huge responsibilities facing states and local governments in the country.

According to the governor, the local government administration is growing and it is our hope that we get them stabilised financially so that they can impact on the lives of our people.

Insisting of the restructuring of the sharing formula, he said that there were lots of things being done at the national level that ought not to be done at that level.

"I believe that local government administration must be autonomous and here in Delta, we have never tampered with their funds, rather we assist them and provide bailout funds for them on a monthly basis to augment their payment of salaries.

"We have generally as a nation, made local government administration take up serious responsibilities like payment of local government council staff and primary school teachers salaries without providing the necessary funds for them.

"We need to have a re-work of the revenue allocation formula because none of the arms of government should shy away from that.

"We need to be able to provide funding so that they can be able to reach out to the people and the people will feel their impact.

"The Federal Government is an important tier of government but they can't perform well in terms of reaching out to the various communities because of the issues of monitoring and evaluation.

"There is a need to re-work the laws of this nation in such a way that we are able to redirect governance the way it ought to be done," he said.

Earlier, ALGON President had said that the group was in Delta for its national executive council meeting and that the choice of the state was in recognition of the sterling accomplishments of Governor Okowa in local government administration.

He said ALGON was not a pressure group or a contract-awarding group, but a partner in developmental governance.

On teachers’ salary increment announced by the Federal Government on Tuesday, Alabi said that ALGON was not against it but pointed out that states and local governments should have been part of the decision.

According to him, teachers’ salaries are within the purview of the states and the local governments and we have it on good authority that the governors were not consulted.

"We therefore advocate for a review of the revenue sharing formula because if there is a review to release more funds to states and local governments we can now handle our affairs as regards increment in teachers’ salaries and all other things begging for attention of local governments," he stated.

On his part, Chairman of ALGON in Delta, Mr Itiako Ikpokpo, thanked the association’s president for choosing Delta to host the NEC.

He said that over the years there had been a strong consistency in efforts at ensuring that local government administration got better.

Ikpokpo, however, said that the running of local government administration in Delta was a reference point for other states to emulate.

Honourable Councillor representing the good people of Ward A, Deputy Leader Honourable Oyebona Olawale Mukaila put Smiles to the faces of private school teachers and he also gave account of stewardship tagged #MYIMPACT JOURNEY. The All Progressive Congress (APC) Party Chairman, Revd. Oyasodun Timothy (IYO) was in attendance, he gave the opening remarks. The chairman started his speech by giving thanks to the Almighty God who made the day a possibility to all of us, he recounted the development acknowledged in Bariga at large and affirmed confidence in the Council Chairman Hon Alabi Kolade leadership since inception of the administration.
