lan Shearer has pledged to donate his brain when he dies to the growing ‘bank’ that is being created by former British professionals for research into dementia and playing football.
The 47-year-old former England captain fronted a powerful BBC documentary into the issue on Sunday shortly after The Telegraph had also reported how families of suffering players in this country were following those in American Football by donating the brains of loved ones to research.
This is because chronic traumatic encephalopathy - a devastating form of dementia that is caused by head trauma – can only be diagnosed in post-mortem and the full scale of the crisis was only accepted by the National Football League in America after hundreds of autopsies. Shearer says the issue has been “swept under the carpet” here and, after admitting to fears that he will suffer CTE in later life, the Premier League's record scorer has informed the Scottish neuropathologist Dr Willie Stewart that he wants to donate his brain.
Dr Stewart diagnosed the first CTE case in a British footballer when he examined Jeff Astle’s brain in post-mortem. Boston University have also diagnosed CTE in the former Chicago Fire ‘soccer’ player Patrick Grange and a study by the University College London this year found CTE in four out of six former players they examined. The Drake Foundation announced yesterday that it will now commit a further £1 million to (as yet undecided) research projects in concussion in football.
The Telegraph has been campaigning for research into the potential link between dementia and playing football following its own investigation, with the Football Association and the Professional Footballers’ Association also now promising six-figure funding to answer this question.
The FA/PFA research is separate to The Drake Foundation and will initially seek simply to answer whether former footballers are suffering disproportionately with neurodegenerative disease. An announcement on the team of experts who will undertake the study is due before Christmas.
The Jeff Astle Foundation has now been contacted by more than 400 suffering families. Astle died in 2002 and the inquest attributed his death to brain damage sustained playing football. There is anger that the FA – and particularly the PFA – have not subsequently pushed for more research into the risks of playing football and the Astle family have called for a parliamentary inquiry into who knew what and when. "Nowhere near enough research has been done so far,” said Shearer.

Guys I foresee a time when heading will be banned in football. I just read that Ryan Mason who suffered a fractured skull from a head collusion with Gary Cahill in January 2017 has been advised by his doctors to retire from the game after 13 months of trying to return to the game.

Remember the Will Smith's movie 'Concussion'?

And also Alan Shaerer inspired research into head injuries too. I see this move gaining momentum.

All that is required to win this show is to be Live with a bunch of fellow crazy, irresponsible people, do all sorts of immoral things, and, viola, you're the winner.

Next thing, you're called a celebrity, winning big advertisement contracts and becoming the face of multinational companies.

If only there could be an educating version of this programme. If only they could house some intelligent people in like manner and make them compete for similar prizes. But, no! Our people do not encourage sanity. Our society promotes evil over good, indecency over decency, immorality over morality, and ungodliness over godliness.

The best in Mathematics competitions will go home with either a carton of cowbell milk or Indomie noodles, ridiculous stipends and laughable prizes. Yet these morons in BBN will earn millions for coming to suck breasts, speak thrash, display nudity, and get under the sheets on International TVs.

Our rich individuals, companies and corporate organisations will spend huge sums of money sponsoring dirty shows like BBN and Beauty Pageants where they will enthrone satanic activities, display nudity, molest our under aged girls, and make them win on bottom power rather than on real beauty and brains. Can anyone forget the Anambra State born Chidinma Okeke saga in a hurry?

What a wasted generation! What a time! How do we raise, nurture and produce the next Chike Obis, Chinua Achebes, Wole Soyinkas, Cyril stover, Apostle olatunde Adekunle, and yes, P.O.C. Akorefes? What foundation are we laying for coming generations? What message of hope and legacy are we leaving behind? What epistle are we sending to the future to testify to it that the past made some level of contributions. Is Immorality the legacy we really want to hand down to the next generation? Are we not losing our minds?

Let all people of goodwill come together and raise alarm against this dirty programme. Let us all with one voice and in unison say, "We've had enough of this nonsense." Let us blow the trumpet in Zion and declare war on these encouragers of evil tendencies and promoters of these demonic programmes targeted at our highly impressionable youths. We should see that this programme is replaced with a more intelligent and educative programme.

Nigeria is broke morally and financially, yet the sponsors are wasting millions of Naira on a highly immoral programme. Please what is the lesson that one can learn from this Big Brother show? What can our YOUTHS pick from it? I know this kind of write up doesn't get many shares. But if we keep quiet, then we are silent conspirators.

So share. Share until a thought process is provoked in the heart of everyone and we can stand up to say, Enough of this nonsense."```

My dad is a soldier and vowed never to allow any of his children join the armed forces after the death of my elder brother 6 months after passing out as a naval officer during the Niger delta. But I had the calling and applied without him knowing then I was a 100 level medical student at OAU. Out of my pocket money i saved up and travelled to Auchi to sign my forms because I was scared of any of the soldiers identifying me at any of the barracks. And also Kaduna for AFSB, God did it for me and the rest is history so brothers put all hope in God and ask yourself if this is really his plan for you.

It's an issue that has been going on from donkeys ago possibly before we got independence.

When my Father decided to stone me back to Warri i was the youngest in my class in high school but the oldest officially too.

Age creation is across every facet of life in Nigeria, I know guys who got married and discovered too late thier wives where older than them. Whaaaaten u go do naa pikin don enter. Also it's not a biblical ground for divorce.

Unfortunately the problem is exasperated by European clubs who put huge value on age. So our guys have no other choice than to be creative.

Cutting 2,3 or more years is the difference between abject poverty or living large. What will you do So lets not be too quick to judge.

I know players from across Africa who are living large now but have shaved off 7/8 years from thier ages. It's not just in Nigeria please. But have no doubt the clubs know but take the view as long as thier is money to be made if you can prove it then it's true. No matter what anybody says.

truly its a national bane not restricted to sports alone too. A relative of mine had this problem of his wife using official age.
Fortunate for me government has my database and such won't work but a lot of my colleagues use 'football age'.
