Today marked exactly 29 years since ace journalist and founding Editor-in-Chief of Newswatch, Sumonu Oladele Giwa was gruesomely murdered by a mail bomb, in his residence on 25, Talabi Street, off Adeniyi Jones Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos.

Dele Giwa as he was fondly called, met his untimely death on Sunday, October 19, 1986, at the House 25 Talabi Street, which has now given way to a hospital. He was killed in his prime at age 39. Had he been alive today, he would be 68 years old.

That Sunday morning, the merchants of death gave the deadly parcel to his then 19-year-old son, Billy, who received it on his behalf.

The assailants had vanished into thin air when he attempted to open the parcel and a blast occurred “tearing open’’ his lower region.

His colleague, Newswatch’s London Bureau Chief, Kayode Soyinka, who was with him at the time of the tragic event, suffered perforated eardrums. Giwa died at the First Foundation Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos, where he was rushed to after the explosion.

Dele Giwa was born on March 16, 1947 to a poor family working in the palace of Oba Adesoji Aderemi, the Ooni of Ife.

He attended local Authority Modern School in Lagere, Ile-lfe.

When his father moved to Oduduwa College, Ile-Ife as a laundry man, he gained admission to that school.

Dele Giwa travelled to the USA for his higher education, earning a BA in English and Communication Arts from Brooklyn College in 1977 and enrolled for a Graduate program at Fordham University.

He worked with the New York Times as a news assistant for four years after which he relocated to Nigeria to work with Daily Times.

Later, in 1984, Dele Giwa and fellow journalists Ray Ekpu, Dan Agbese and Yakubu Mohammed founded Newswatch and the first edition was distributed on 28 January 1985.

A 1989 description of the magazine said it “changed the format of print journalism in Nigeria [and] introduced bold, investigative formats to news reporting in Nigeria”.

However, in the first few months of the administration of General Ibrahim Babangida, who took power in August 1985, the magazine was shamelessly flattering. It printed his face on the cover four times and even criticised “anyone who attempted to make life unpleasant for Babangida.”

Later, the paper took a more hostile view of the Babangida regime.

However, so many stories sprung up after his death on who killed him and why he was killed.

One of such stories was his link to Gloria Okon, a lady who was arrested in 1985 for Drug related offenses and who was said to have links to the late wife of IBB

Gloria Okon was said to have died in detention but a couple of months after, Dele Giwa ran into her in London and she poured out her story to him.

It was said that the Government got to know of the meeting and allegedly decided to wipe out Giwa as that remained the only way to keep him off their tracks.

Giwa married an American nurse in 1974.

His second marriage, to Florence Ita Giwa, lasted 10 months.

He later married Olufunmilayo Olaniyan on July 10, 1984, and they were married until his death in 1986.

He was survived by his mother, wives and children.

As Nigeria and the rest of the world seize today, to celebrate, as well as to remember the legacies of this refined journalist, the unanswered question 29 years after remains: Who killed Dele Giwa?

When an answer will come, however, remains unknown for now.

Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested a 34- year-old man, Mr. Udeh Onuora Pascal, for being in possession of 108 Automated Teller Machine debit cards.

Pascal was suspected to be working for an international criminal organisation.

The agency said the debit cards belonged to five commercial banks.

The NDLEA further disclosed that First City Monument Bank had the highest number of cards with 58; Stanbic IBTC Bank had 23; Zenith Bank, 19; Fidelity Bank, 6; and Diamond Bank 2.

A statement by the Head, Public Affairs, NDLEA, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, on Saturday, said the arrest was made at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Lagos while the suspect was attempting to board a Qatar Airline flight to China.

The statement quoted NDLEA’s commander at the airport, Mr. Ahmadu Garba, as saying the suspect was arrested in connection with suspected money laundering and was immediately transferred to the Assets and Financial Investigation Directorate of the Agency for investigation.

The Director, Assets and Financial Investigation, Mrs. Victoria Egbase, was quoted as saying that the agency had established a case of financial crime against the suspect, adding that the chairman of the unit had ordered the transfer of the case to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for further investigation.

The suspect, in his statement, was quoted to have said he was asked to take the cards to China.

President Muhammadu Buhari and the leadership of the National Assembly met on Wednesday night at the Aso Villa to discuss matters said to be related to the 2016 budget.

Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, jointly led the leadership of the National Assembly to the meeting with the President.

Others who attended the meeting from the Senate included the Senate Majority Leader, Ali Ndume; the Deputy Majority Leader, Bala Ibn Na’Allah; Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio and Minority Whip, Philip Aduda.

Those who attended from the House of Representatives included the Deputy Speaker, Yusuf Lasun; and House Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila.

They all arrived the venue in a convoy at about 8.45pm.

Conspicuously missing at the meeting however was the Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu.

The meeting however started at about 9.15pm when Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and some top government officials arrived at the venue.

Journalists were barred from covering the meeting which was held inside the First Lady’s Conference Hall inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

But findings by The PUNCH indicated that Buhari’s plan to send a 2015 supplementary budget to the National Assembly was a key item on the agenda.

A senior National Assembly official informed The PUNCH that the performance of the 2015 budget also featured at the meeting.

“First would be to look at issues surrounding the main 2015 budget and why there is a need for a supplementary proposal.

“Of course, this will dovetail into talks about the 2016 budget,” the source stated.

The Presidency had two weeks ago hinted of a plan by Buhari to forward a supplementary budget to the legislature.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan had signed a 2015 budget of N4.4tn shortly before he exited office on May 29.

The National Assembly had passed the budget in April with a crude oil benchmark of $53 per barrel.

However, oil has sold far below the budgeted figure for months.

The development has and created seeming implementation bottlenecks for the budget.

It was also learnt that the meeting might discuss the leadership crisis occasioned by the emergence of Saraki as the Senate President.

Saraki, who is currently being prosecuted by the Code of Conduct Tribunal for alleged false declaration of assets, emerged the President of the Senate against the party’s choice of Ahmed Lawan.

Since the elections in the Senate, Saraki has been having a running battle with the leadership of the governing All Progressives Congress.

It was also gathered the meeting was one of the steps being taken to resolve the crisis and reconcile Saraki with the leadership of the party.

It will be recalled that Dogara had on Monday evening met with Buhari on the Saraki issue.

The Speaker met with the President following a resolution by the House that he should intervene in the crisis.

The meeting might also be aimed at securing smooth passage for ministerial nominees whose names were sent to the Senate by the President last week.

The meeting was still ongoing as at the time of filing this report.

Chelsea football club has issued an official statement on its website backing the clubs manager, Jose Mourinho.

The statement which was issued at 2pm today reads:

“The club wants to make it clear that Jose continues to have our full support.
As Jose has said himself, results have not been good enough and the team’s performances must improve. However, we believe that we have the right manager to turn this season around and that he has the squad with which to do it.”

Recall that mourinho had earlier on challenged the board to back him or sack him after his team lost 3-1 to Southampton during the weekend. The statement may come as a sign of relieve to the manager who is under pressure to produce good results and turn the season around or face the axe of the Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, who is known for his trigger happy fingers.

3.Though a medical doctor by training, he comes from a state where virtually every elite in that state is a lawyer... MouthAction and open-mouthed "French" kissing increase the risk of acquiring oral infections of human papillomavirus, or HPV, a study shows.

"Performing MouthAction is not without risks," Dr. Maura L. Gillison told Reuters Health.

It is associated with gonorrheal pharyngitis - a sexually transmitted infection of the tonsils and back of the throat that immediately causes symptoms, she noted, and now is associated with mouth HPV infections that are silent "yet may lead to oral cancer 10 to 20 years later."

Gillison from The Ohio State University, Columbus, and colleagues explored whether sexual behaviors were associated with the odds of oral HPV infection in 332 adults and in 210 college-aged men. They found that 4.8 percent of the adults and 2.9 percent of college-aged men had oral HPV infection.

Among adults, the odds of oral HPV infection were significantly elevated among current tobacco smokers and among individuals who reported having either more than 10 oral or more than 25 vaginal sex partners during their lifetime.

Similar risk factors applied to the college-aged men. For them, having at least six recent MouthAction or open-mouthed kissing partners were independently associated with increased odds of developing oral HPV infection.

For the 28 percent of college-aged men who reported never having performed MouthAction, having at least 10 lifetime or at least five recent open-mouthed kissing partners was associated with a significantly higher risk of developing oral HPV infection.

"Our data suggest that oral HPV infections that could predispose to cancer may be transmitted by very common behaviors such as open-mouth or 'French' kissing," Gillison concluded.

Given that the HPV vaccine does not have any therapeutic value against pre-existing HPV infections, "this may be relevant to the timing of administration of vaccination," Gillison said.

Although the CDC recommends that the vaccine be administered between the ages of 9 and 12 ideally, in practice, she noted, it is often administered to girls between the age of 14 and 16. Oral exposure to HPV may have occurred prior to that age.
